@Magrane Probably not the best example, Nintendo already made money off Odyssey long ago. I do admit that I was annoyed at Metroid Dread on PC day 1 given Metroid's poor sales throughout the 2010s, but for the most part big companies aren't hurting for money. One day emulation will probably be the only way to play Switch games, especially if they get delisted and game cards get scalped, like what's happening with the 3DS right now. I would pay $20 for Snake Eater 3D if it gets relisted soon, but if it doesn't I won't have any affordable totally legit way to get it. I did rip MGS HD from my 360 this week and played it on Xenia.
@SalvorHardin I don't like Denuvo but I don't think they have to pay people to defend it. There's plenty of fanboys ready to fight the good fight against emulation. Sometimes Denuvo's performance impact is minimal, other times stutter, long loading times, or online checks drive me crazy. I used to view consoles as safe from those shenanigans, now I'm not sure. Hopefully this fails.
Maybe Switch exclusives then? Regardless I wonder what the performance impact is. There's always commenters who think emulation is the devil, I'm more interested in if it has any side effects on how smoothly the game runs. DRM at best can be hard to notice, but I've been around long enough to know sometimes it hurts paying customers too.
@K1LLEGAL Sonic R was an album, and we don't talk about the game. Still criminal more people don't know Sonic R's soundtrack. That soundtrack alone would be ammunition in a Saturn vs N64/PS1 argument.
I like it, it reminds me of his more upbeat Hip Hop Rock from his first album, which is a good fit for Sonic. Video game pop star mashups don't always go good together but I think this one does.
Shin Megami Tensei IV used price almost doubled the day the 3DS eShop closure was announced, really hoping Atlus ports SMT4, SMT4A, and Soul Hackers to PC and console. Scalpers will buy and scalp copies out of mere speculation. After the Wata games scandal everyone has their own get rich quick scheme that ruins gaming. I fixed my Xbox 360 disc drive recently for legal game rips on the Xenia emulator, but if that failed, there was always an alternative...
@Savage_Joe There's more to GPU than flops. The Switch is easily more powerful than a 360. Look at Skyrim. My whole point anyways is that it is still a far cry from an Xbox One, which is what the comment section is arguing about. I am already unpopular to acknowledge the Switch is not a powerhouse, but even I know it's not that bad.
@Sinton A lot of games on Xbox One and PS4 run like Switch ports now. 720p, lots of pop in, fuzzy shadows, and the usual cutbacks. The Switch is like 2/3 the GPU power of an Xbone docked, 1/3 portable, and half the RAM, probably 1/4-1/3 the CPU. I doubt this game hits the CPU hard, but it definitely will hit the GPU. I doubt this would be easy to port, and impossible to same day launch.
@GameOtaku Actually playing it, can confirm it struggles. Tons of pop-in and frame drops. It's definitely playable, but it's not Mario Kart 8. I like the Switch for what it is but its days of miracle ports are looking further every time I look in the rear view mirror. No point in stanning the Switch.
@Itachi2099 Switch ports are hard. Shin Megami Tensei V barely runs on Switch, I'm not shocked this is skipping. Last multi plat was the SMT3 remaster, which also came to Switch.
Burnout is real, game companies got to hire more people instead of expecting insane amounts of overtime. I accept this profession is more demanding than most, but they can afford to make it less bad.
@Snatcher Everything has some bugs, but I'm not shocked annual releases have more. Even good code will fail sometimes, but anything rushed out likely has bad code. A proprietary engine that was rushed could make the new game even buggier. In house engines can be good, but never when they are rushed out the door.
@Yodalovesu Just cause it's common doesn't make it good. Some games will have crunch in the last few weeks before release, but when studios make that the norm employees are more than justified in complaining.
Edit: By norm, I mean crunching all year, not all developers crunching before release.
@BloodNinja Monopolies have more power, they can charge more money, make less games, lay people off, bury competition. 3rd parties ditched the Wii U and it suffered. The Switch got some games from Ubisoft, Bethesda, Capcom, Sega, and others, as well as Nintendo and indies. EA and Activision have done almost nothing, but the trend towards consolidation probably won't stop with them. Maybe I'm too pessimistic, certainly I won't miss Activision's leadership, but the more Xbox owns, the more likely it is they will charge me more. And the more likely they will then use that money to buy Capcom or someone who will hurt Nintendo's game selection.
@Anguspuss That's not how monopolies work. They don't buy the publishers Nintendo fanboys hate and stop there. They buy everything. So yes, even if you don't these publishers, this is bad news. They can and will keep buying.
@CactusMan Not gonna waste more time on a Nintendo fanboy, but if you think that's all Sony makes...if you like Nintendo games, why don't you spend time playing them instead of acting like an angry teenager on Reddit?
@Anguspuss EA is probably the worst publisher to Nintendo, but if y'all can't understand how industry consolidation is bad for everyone I don't know what to tell you. Nintendo and indies are great but that didn't save the Wii U. If Nintendo's competitors own everything that is bad for Nintendo and consumers.
The only reason Xbox buying Activision was good was Activision's leadership being morally bankrupt. EA is no saint but I haven't heard of them being nightmare fuel. I can see Apple's VR ambitions making Frostbite tempting given Star Wars Squadrons, I could see Amazon given New World and Luna, I just don't want to see Xbox get even bigger. That's coming from an Xbox user. Google would be a disaster, and Netflix would probably sell EA later if I had to guess.
As the review said, the game struck me with what a solid platformer it is. This kind of game lives and dies by how right it feels, and no amount of art will compensate for slippery controls and whatnot. The Sonic quality soundtrack helps sell this further as a 90s nostalgia trip. Add it to any eShop and Steam purchase and forget the price.
The hype wasn't nearly as high but quality wise this port is not much better than Cyberpunk 2077, and crucially it was sold directly by Rockstar on PC. At first I thought it was to keep the cut Valve gets from Steam, but now I wonder if it was to avoid refunds. Of course, I'm sure Rockstar was blindsided by the DMCA violation, and it was pulled to thoroughly comb through the files for anything else compromising. The same pattern of withholding review codes until the last second and showing little gameplay definitely lines up with CP 2077 though.
If China steals your privacy, there's better ways to do it than backdooring games. They'll just buyout your bank or smartphone manufacturer. I assume the main goal of this is to invest in media for both the money and censorship power. I don't recall Suda's games being political, so I guess he'll be alright, but it is unfortunate to see China spread its influence like this. I can't blame Suda for wanting a stable source of money though, game dev is not easy and they struggled to fund No More Heroes 3.
The Demi Fiend would be my favorite but it will probably be someone else. Maybe Halo MCC cloud version? Maybe as some others above me say, a Mortal Kombat character or the Doom slayer himself.
I miss the days of open source games like Doom 3. To be fair EA of all people released Command and Conquer remaster that is open source. So if they can do it, anyone can. I love how GTA V was reverse engineered to find bad code made the loading times 3x longer than they needed to be, and Rockstar actually patched it and paid security bounty money to the person who made a mod that fixed it.
I've come to believe this lawsuit is just as much a publicity stunt as it is an attempt to make a profitable Epic Games Store. I don't like Apple but it is sad to see the court's time wasted on this.
I hope they bring some Rare Replay titles to Switch. I have it on Xbone and would definitely rebuy Perfect Dark and Perfect Dark Zero on Switch. Switch doesn't have many if any good split-screen shooter games.
I don't get the Epic Games Metaverse. Fortnite, Rocket League, and Fall Guys are separate IP, and while that can be said for many Nintendo series, I don't see the synergy between the IP Epic acquired that Nintendo has. Maybe Fall Guys and Fortnite, but not Rocket League. I feel like Epic saw Marvel movie sales and wants a piece of that pie. Heck, maybe not even Epic but maybe Tencent or some other investor. It's too cynical and contrived to be real. Maybe it's because I found Fortnite to be boring, but Epic's marketing even seems self-aware. Free Fortnite was totally pitched towards getting bored kids to heckle Apple's customer service as if Fortnite is as dire as the situations in Tigray or Myanmar. CD Project Red tried something similar when they told their customers to demand refunds from Sony. Fortnite was kinda cool with the Travis Scott concert and battle royale craze but at this point it's all cameos and marketing deals. Epic is just milking Fortnite and the Epic Games Store for anything they can get at this point. I guess Unreal engine will always be relevant. I miss the days when Epic made Unreal Tournament, Paragon, and Gears of War.
It reminds me of a bitter ex who is insistent that they dumped you after you tell them you don't want them anymore. They tell other people they dumped you and expect you to also say that even though it was the other way around. The rationale is "I am not the crazy one, you are, so how could I be the one who got dumped?" This "solo" dev is ****ing nuts.
@iLikeUrAttitude As a means to control media. It's pathetic because I don't think all those Bond films with the Russian bad guy even contributed to the fall of the Soviet Union. But it's more about the ability for people in the gaming to even criticize them. They were able to get Activision to throw Blitzchung under the bus. Developers probably can't even talk about it without fear of retribution.
It's no secret people like to blame Asians, especially Chinese, but giant Chinese corporations actually merit the distrust. The Chinese government has compalined about games where they are criticized, and a giant corporation from there is not going to be good for free speech. See Blitzchung and see what I mean. I'm always glad to see people not crapping on something Chinese because it's Chinese, but do not trust Tencent. They are a very bad influence.
@TheLightSpirit Heh, anti-virus is useless. Ad blockers are where it's at. Malware comes from ads, instead of software to remove it after the fact (that often doesn't work), stop it at the source. Malware even comes as extensions so Chromebooks are vulnerable too.
Is it a lack of competent security or more hacking due to the pandemic? Probably both but I'm not an expert. I wonder if Brian Krebs or someone else will comment on this.
Nice, my friend snipped the Wi-Fi wires when she took apart her Wii U. I stripped both ends of the wires and twisted them together, and the Wi-Fi works good as new. But use an iFixit kit to take it apart, and it's less glamorous. When I cleaned out and repasted my cousin's old 360, it red ringed a decade before. I cut myself and bled on the board when I saw dried blood. The X clamp for the heat sink said fixed Oct something 2007, and I could tell I was not the first one inside. Flux and more dried blood was around the CPU they had to reflow, and a dead spider friend was behind the power button. Repairing things is cool. I fixed stick drift on multiple controllers by cleaning the potentiometers or soldering new ones on. A different friend soldered a hard drive into his Wii for Project M, was a fun dumb project to use the university labs for before corona hit.
I doubt the devs are lazy, more likely it's the suits not wanting to hire enough devs and give it enough time. The art style change was a poor decision.
Guillotine? Is that a Switch RE title? Is it a gritty M-rated Viewtiful Joe reboot? Time will tell. I don't exactly trust the source and plans can change, but I look forward to Capcom's output.
I was skeptical of Epic Games buying Psyonix. Not because it's cool to hate on Epic Games. I want a good Steam competitor, but my optimism in the Epic Games Store turned to disdain. Instead of improving the Epic Games Store they threw money at developers for exclusives. The only silver lining is that money helped developers I love pay the bills. I knew Epic would kill the Linux version of Rocket League and pull it from Steam, but I did not anticipate them messing up the Switch version. I figured if they took all this time for the hate to blow over they would get the transition right. I looked at the Switch as the backup plan. If they messed up the PC version I would have the Switch to fall back to. But even that got messed up. This transition has been a mess.
I don't get why they just don't use back compat. I don't have the game but it looks simple and can run on Switch, did they get paid to go next-gen only? Probably hurting their sales for what is probably a tiny bit of optimization.
