Throughout the lifespan of the Nintendo Switch, there have been a number of "impossible" ports released. We're talking games like The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt and the new version of DOOM, developed by specialist teams such as Saber Interactive and Panic Button.
One other developer who is also known to work miracles on Nintendo's hybrid system is Virtuos. Since the arrival of the Switch, it's helped bring games like Dying Light, L.A. Noire, Dark Souls: Remastered and Bioshock: The Collection to the device. Now, in the latest news, it's been revealed the same company is behind the NieR:Automata Switch release (originally developed by PlatinumGames).
Square Enix has previously called on Virtuos for a number of other projects like the Tomb Raider series and even some older Final Fantasy games. When NieR:Automata does arrive on the Switch, players can expect the game to run at 30fps in 1080p docked and 720p undocked.
Virtuos has previously mentioned how its Switch ports would keep getting better, and it's mostly been able to deliver a number of high-quality experiences on the Switch so far. Earlier this year, the company also mentioned how it was excited about a number of Switch projects for Summer and beyond - NieR:Automata is seemingly one of them.
Are you looking forward to getting your hands on NieR:Automata when it arrives on October 6th? How do you feel knowing Virtuos is delivering the Switch version? Leave your thoughts down below.

Shame that a fast-paced hack n' slash game will be limited to 30FPS but since this is my first time playing the game I'm sure it'll be fun still. Hopefully consistent all throughout.
Although pretty weird that Platinum won't be handling the port. I'm guessing they're busy with Bayo 3 atm.
@Royalblues Unfortunately it's just the first one, while the trilogy came out the same year on other consoles. 🥲
I'm still holding out hope that they are bringing Tomb Raider to the Switch as well.
I’m glad the port is being done by a company that’s proven themselves in the past.
I cannot wait for more people to experience this game soon
I want dark souls 3 on the switch so bad
@Royalblues I gave the Dark Souls demo on Switch a shot and Bloodbourne a few years ago. Coming from a big Monster Hunter fan, the Soulslike games aren't for me. I can't put my finger on it, but I just couldn't get into those games.
There's no way this is hitting 720p/1080p on Switch. They said the same thing about their The Outer Worlds port, and that ended up hovering around 720p docked with dips during stress points.
All the same, I hope the port is good enough. NieR: Automata is a tremendous game.
They have a good track record. Outer Worlds was a bit rough when it launched, but plays fine after patches. Other games they ported like Dark Souls, Bioshock trilogy and Spyro run great.
Really excited to check out Nier now that it's coming to Switch.
@Ralizah I'm guessing Platinum Games shared toolkits, methods etc that they learned from their ports of Bayo1/2 and Astral Chain on Switch.
This port has apparently been in development for a while. Hopefully the extra time means it will run well
@Royalblues Big Red Button or Panic Button? The former went to VR after Sonic Boom. The latter is the Switch port legends.
Nier Automata was ok.
1080p at 30fps with no graphic downgrades would be an amazing port.
Is Neir Automata 30fps on other systems or is the Nintendo Switch version just an inferior but portable option?
@eaglebob345 my most wanted third party games on switch.
@AlexanderDaniels it’s 60 fps on other platforms but it really dips to 40 to 50 fps a lot when it first launched.
@Zyph automata didn’t run very good on other platforms and those platforms were hitting 60 fps.
I’m just so happy it ain’t cloud!
This game was, frankly, on my "Switch ports I want but probably won't happen" list. I'm glad I get to shuffle it to the "Heck yes" list.
Amazing news. Just another reason to buy the game
@Bizzyb Just my guess, but I don't think Platinum had much to share here.
Bayo1/2 were already on WiiU and probably not that difficult to port. There are probably similarities between the Nintendo Systems.
And astral chain was developed for Switch afaik, it's not a port.
But that's just my guess/conclusion, no proof at all
I also think they are busy with Bayo3 and are probably not capable porting a PS4 game to Switch...
Now get them to do Kingdom Hearts next, please. If Square can do this, why not?
I have this Game in my PS5 backlog. Bought it together with the first Nier as a PS5 day one game. Only finished the first one so far...
@Royalblues It's been out since 2018 and was featured prominently in Directs and other Nintendo adverts. It was a pretty big deal. There were leaks and stuff ahead of time. It even got its own amiibo. I'm not even a Souls fan, so I'm baffled you didn't know this, lol. I thought you were trolling at first.
Nice. Dark Souls's performance was notoriously bad in its original release, but I didn't notice any of those problems on Switch. This might be even more of a challenge, since it's a more recent game, but I have a good amount of confidence in them.
That's great, can't wait to see how the port will be handle. If I knew Square Enix and Nintendo, they usually try to find the best dev that truly knew what they're doing and I'm glad they actually chosen the better one.
This was one of the last Switch ports I was hoping for. Only played the demo on PS4 in hope that I could just grab it on Switch. 5 years later, well, guess I finally get to play it. Now, can we please have an ARKHAM COLLECTION...???
Good news then. Dying Light and sWitcher 3 are both excellent ports and since growing up with games before anyone cared about frame counts, I'm not a spoiled "omg it's not 60 fps?!" type of person and will have no problem with 30 as long as the dips are very minimal.
@nimnio Yes, and my question was answered, no thanks to you. Good night.
@SteamEngenius Virtuos is great but Switcher was a Saber port. Dying Light was Virtuos.
For anyone who hasn't played this yet, you're in for a treat. It's an amazing game – one of my favourites of the last console generation. Hopefully the port will do it justice.
Man I wish someone like Virtuos had ported games like Crash Team Racing and Bloodstained, those games STILL have problems, I bet there are other games too that could really benefit from a company with some proper porting knowledge.
@eaglebob345 I’ve been hoping for the same for years now, be nice to see a trilogy release. This is slightly positive in that regard due to SE working with Virtuos. Fingers crossed!
Sub 60fps won't do this game any favors.
Surprising, but then it also answers the reason for 30fps.
Yet another big game I will owe Virtuos easy access to and the ability to experience at all. Hat off.
So weird, that Platinum games keeps porting almost all their games- but totally ignores Vanquish- an old Ps3 title. I dont get why they still havent released that one yet since its one of their best games too.
Ew, Viruos. I've not been impressed with any of their work, they totally changed the look of the Arkham games when they ported them to UE5 and they failed to put gyro aiming into their Switch Bioshock ports. Nier has gone from an insta-buy to a wait and see.
so excited for this
I'm happy about Virtuos doing the port. Now I am hoping the Tomb Raider series of games will come to Switch too
This is great news! I purchase all of the games mentioned here on day that Virtuos helped bring to Switch and I enjoyed all of them! I'll be there day one to support this game as well!
As other have mentioned, I hope Tomb Raider comes to Switch soon, along with Deus Ex!
October will be a busy month with this, Persona 5 Royal, & RE Village Gold Edition...
@Ralizah They already said the game is 1080 30fps dock and 720p 30fps on handheld
@Royalblues
The good thing is that Dark Souls is leaner and more focused than Elden Ring. And movement is slower, allowing you to mostly get by with a tank build and slow, deliberate attacks.
I haven't gotten far into Elden Ring either. I started it, saw how vast it was, and put it away until I have more time for it.
@Jordium_Z They said the same for The Outer Worlds, and that didn't pan out at all.

It really amazes me that even after all of the "miracle ports";
DOOM
Witcher 3
Wolfenstien 2
Crysis 1-3
X-Com 2
Diablo 3
Hellblade Senua's Sacrifice
People are still questioning if/how a game can run on Switch...
@Bizzyb I know, right? These ports are really great.
Haven't gotten to most of their ports yet but did play the first Bioshock on Switch and it seemed to be handled REALLY well so I have faith that Nier Automata will run just fine on Switch.
@mazzel Companies help out other companies with game development all the time. Namco Bandai has worked on numerous Nintendo games you'd be very surprised about.
Also, Monolithsoft is another that often helps with development behind the scenes.
Considering this is a (originally) Platinum Games developed game and SE does NOT want to see a sloppy port of a high value IP, I have very little doubt that Platinum didn't help with development on some level.
But yes, we shall see. As long as it's a good port that's all that matters
@Bizzyb they sure do, my comment was specifically regarding your "toolkit" assumption. I was specifically thinking, that platinum did not do any real port so far, so their knowledge regarding porting a PS4 game to Switch is limited.
other support, also as a consultant or creative support is definitely possible and likely happened. let's see about the final product!
@Bizzyb And yet they didn't care enough for Kingdom Hearts.
@eaglebob345 first or third?
@Poco_Lypso First or third what?
@eaglebob345 u said its the first one. isnt this the third part of the trilogy
@Poco_Lypso Ah, I see what you mean. I was responding to the above comment about the first Dark Souls being on Switch.
