Update [Mon 21st Feb, 2022 12:15 GMT]: Atlus has just revealed Soul Hackers 2 during a livesteam – but it's sadly not coming to Switch.
Here's some PR:
In a war between devil summoners, it is up to Ringo and her team to decrypt destiny and save the world from apocalypse.
Soul Hackers 2 inherits the essence of Devil Summoner: Soul Hacker, while evolving the game concept with a more defined art style, addictive RPG gameplay and ATLUS’s next-level storytelling. Set in the Shin Megami Tensei universe, Soul Hackers 2 follows a brand new story about two Agents of Aion, Ringo and Figure, and their fight to stop the destruction of the world.
Produced and directed by Eiji Ishida and Mitsuru Hirata, other featured staff includes music composed by MONACA, character designs by Shirow Miwa and Production Manager Shinjiro Takata.
The game launches in Japan for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC on August 25th. The western launch is a day later.

Original Story [Thu 17th Feb, 2022 05:30 GMT]: Atlus has launched a new countdown website for Soul Hackers - with the big reveal set to take place on February 21st.
There's no information on what exactly to expect, but it's launched a Twitter account alongside it. There's also a mysterious greeting when you open the website (thanks, Gematsu):
Hello HUMAN
We want to collect your information
> Checking device compatibility
> Notice: Please, do NOT take your hands off the device
> Call “Soul Hack”
> Sequence start
If you're at all familiar with Soul Hackers - you might remember Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers, an enhanced port of the 1997 Sega Saturn original, released for the 3DS in 2013.
What kind of Soul Hackers announcement would you like this website to reveal? Leave a comment below.

Soul Hackers history website update incoming you guys!
how would Soul Hackers fare for someone who's never played an Atlus game?
...
asking for a friend.
Soul Hackers 2 is announced and the 3DS eShop closes…
The prices for Soul Hackers will go insane. But great news that after 25 years we’ll get a sequel even though it won't be on Switch.
That’s definitely unexpected. Not a massive fan of Soul Hackers but any new content from SMT-adjacent series is welcome.
When you think about the story of the game this is the perfect timing to release a new Soul hackers.
Persona 7 basically confirmed
i'd appreciate it if they brought soul hackers and devil summoner to switch unaltered, but translated, but that's hoping too much
@N00BiSH the story is good, but the gameplay takes some getting used to, even as a (modern, admittedly) smt fan
the magnetite system, where demons you have summoned use a secondary form of currency, in particular is grueling
@neufel So we're basically skipping Persona 6?
@SpiderSquid it's probably an Amico exclusive
i swear they doing this one for me i was just talking about this w a friend that they should do a new devil summoner
I was just recommending this game specifically in the comments in the article relating to the eshop getting shut down. I’m really excited, I just ordered the sega Saturn disc of it the other day. Peak megaten, I really hope this is a port/remake/sequel. Any of the three would be awesome.
@N00BiSH soul hackers is actually a really great megaten game to gauge where you should go depending on what you liked about it. The game is split between some new and old mechanics, as well as having some of the early QOL changes megaten received as more entries came out(demon compendium to register fusions, apps ). But it’s also a first person dungeon crawler like SMT1, 2 and if and has an older mechanic called Magnetite that you have to keep up with. If it is your thing you should play the super famicom mainlines and if it isn’t try playing newer mainlines or other spin-offs
I quite enjoyed Soul Hackers, would love a sequel on Switch. A port would be cool too.
A new Devil Summoner game would be awesome.
@N00BiSH Soul Hackers is pretty old, so you'd need to adjust to the dated presentation and gameplay mechanics. But the fascinating classic cyberpunk setting (with a healthy dose of magic and folklore mixed in) and decent plot make it worth a go.
I played Soul Hackers on 3DS last year, I won’t get my hopes up but a sequel would be really appreciated.
Although, the best thing about it was it’s very 90s vibe.
Souls Hackers is a great game with a really unique atmosphere. Well, I think this is a re-release of the game for the Switch (and other platforms)
Would love to see Soul Hackers on Switch, but it would need some serious work.
I thought the 3DS version looked rough at the time...
I hope it’s a sequel to Soul Hackers as we don’t need another port of this and I hope we get a separate game announcement this month for the Persona 25th anniversary
I was wondering if they might release a port of the Soul Hackers game, since it'll be harder to obtain on 3DS when the eShop closes down.
Soul Hackers is a pretty neat game and a contemporary follow up could be potentially very interesting, alternatively a more beefy remake as opposed to the basic port job the 3DS version got could also be neat. It's not my favourite game in the series but it's a worthy interesting.
I'm hoping for a port/remake for switch and they should also port the other 3DS games such as devil survivor, SMT4 and Strange Journey as the physical versions are now expensive and with the online store closing there is not a cheaper alternative
Hopefully it’s a sequel. No need to hype up with a countdown if it’s another port of this
It must be so weird to report on the 3DS and Wii U shop closures, while also reporting on new games for the Nintendo eShop, which will one day face a closure if Nintendo's track record is anything to go off of. This is a dig at Nintendo, not Nintendolife. Just must be a strange position to be in, for you guys.
Lots of countdowns lately, huh? The UK Direct one, the Capcom one and now this. I wonder if this is going to become a trend.
I'll bet money that it's an anime adaptation.
Fantastic game btw
I'm guessing a remaster of the 3DS game, a load of Atlus games will be lost to time when Nintendo shuts down the 3DS eshop (similarly if Sony tries again to shut down the PS3 and Vita stores) so I think Atlus will try to save what they can.
@Kimyonaakuma I'm not sure how a Switch version would work, with the HD details. It would nean redrawing a lot of the sprites, something Atlus has for some reason been hesitant to do. I was surprised at some of the artwork in SMTIV, even on a 240p screen they looked so low resolution sometimes, and very inconsistent. Can't really hide that are 1080p though
I'd probably aim to double-dip if it turns out to be a Switch port, but it's already English and portable. Them bringing over and finally localizing the first Devil Summoner instead would be certainly preferable.
Give us Trauma Center you cowards!
@somebread My gosh, I hate the Magnetite system. That said I'd rather like a remake.
Dont be another port.....something new please.!
Heck yeah. There is gonna be a new game announcement and I am here for it. We’re not gonna get Persona Five so might as well get a new Soul hackers. I hope it’s not a port. It’s about time and while they are at it why don’t they give us the Etrian Odyssey games.
The chances of this being another mobile game is 98%. You can't fool us again Sega.
It's going to be over a day and a half later after Capcom countdown. If they wanted to **** with us, they should have let it end at the same time...
@BloodNinja Yeah but it's to be expected, no one is using them stores anyways and Nintendo ain't wasting no money keeping dead servers up. The only thing they should had done is port all the digital Wii U stuff to the Switch eshop before the closure but since they are too lazy to even do that, it was good while it last. If you had never embraced digital on any of those platforms then you had nothing to worry about.
Hmm intriguing.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
Oh yeah... There's that.
Never played Soul Hackers so yay? I guess. I'd be excited if there was a new Persona game but it doesn't look like there is so I don't really care about a game I'm likely never going to play.
I'm banking on a remake or rerelease of Soul Hackers. I'll be shocked if it's a new game.
Either way, I'll bite. I bought the 3DS version of Soul Hackers but only played it for a few minutes before something took my attention away. That was about 8 years ago...
I hope it's a port/remaster for pc and switch
I just want Atlus to bring back Digital Devil Saga.
I believe there was an interview where Atlus hoped to reveal a new MegaTen game this year, in addition to all of the Persona stuff. I don't know what to expect. Worst case is Atlus makes available again one of its 3DS games, or they port the first Devil Summoner, which I understand is a more dated and less good game.
so if this is a new game, its going to be Switch exclusive or is it gonna be multiplatform?
Well this is some absolute ********.
Lol what a slap in the face as the first one was on 3DS, il just play it on my playstation 5 as this looks too good to miss.
But I have to wonder what the hell Atlus are thinking, every game in Japan sells best on switch and its the main console there right now, they will be losing out on potentially a million sales at least. Atlus must not like money.
Or
A switch definitive edition will come out a year after launch just like with dragon quest 11s, but I wouldn't hold my breath
Atlus dumbest business decision in recent memory.
Japan sales are going to be dreadful and the prequel (in the west) being a 3ds exclusive is gonna alienate the current install base.
I really can't wrap my head around it skipping switch
Unfortunate, but overall great announcement from first looks
Oh well it's on PC anyways.
@anoyonmus multi platform apart from the switch for some reason
I'm currently playing Soul Hackers so this is unexpected, excellent news.
I'm shocked!
Not really, it's Atlus. Wonder what they'll bring to Switch next. Something already out, I'm sure
I will be playing an SMT game on Xbox. How bizzare
Atlus being Atlus.
Kind've silly to ignore the only successful console in Japan, especially when SMT V became the best selling mainline SMT entry ever in a month
@wanghosom Remember this is not the same Atlus we all know and love. This is the crappy Sega corp version of them. Also it's likely it'll come to Switch at a later time when nobody care about the game anymore.
I'm glad that this game is coming everywhere but excluding the switch is literally Atlus being Atlus, I have no idea how they take these decisions. Anyway the game looks very interesting and the ost is already a banger as expected.
Im not mad about about but it makes no sense business wise for it not to be on Switch Atlus are ignoring a huge install base especially in Japan the market they care most about
Just like Catherine and 13 Sentinels it will come to the Switch eventually. I mean come on now the Switch is known for Atlus support and I'm sure this will come soon enough.
I'm curious to know what that unannounced game in the Nintendo Dream Magazine might be today.
Not coming to the switch? Wut. That's where the most of the fanbase is (SMTIV and original on the 3ds, SMTV on the Switch).
Guess Atlus plays the corporate game on the hardest difficulty settings. They don't want easy money such as persona or soul hackers on the Switch.
Atlus makes no sense, business or common, in anything they do. They just have the most well received JRPG of all time so far Persona 5/R and ask fans continually if they want ports, fans react in earnest and they do nothing. Soul Hackers having been remade for 3ds is getting a sequel on all platforms but the switch?! Seriously I’m starting to believe Atlus is being headed by a bunch of idiots.
@Primo40295
They must throw darts at a board.
Atlus has to either be incredibly stupid or Sony paid them off to keep it away from coming to Nintendo Switch just to boulster their console in Japan and not have it completely killed by potential Switch versions sale numbers.
I'm going to guess it gets announced for Switch in the E3 Direct but is a cloud version.
It's an odd choice, but it doesn't look like the most technically demanding game. Maybe they're focusing on the platforms where power isn't an issue and then scaling back to the Switch.
But the original Soul Hackers was on PlayStation and we've seen SMT on Xbox before....I suppose it isn't too strange.
@Itachi2099 Since this is also on Xbox I would say Sony has no involvement in this.
That's pretty funny. Looking forward to playing it on my PS5.
Also disappointed this wasn't a global reveal/release
You did it with SMTV That is the standard you will be held to forever now.
@ShadowofTwilight22 pretty much. Outside of simultaneous global launches and PC ports, nothing has really changed with how Atlus handles their games.
@Itachi2099 Switch ports are hard. Shin Megami Tensei V barely runs on Switch, I'm not shocked this is skipping. Last multi plat was the SMT3 remaster, which also came to Switch.
@Specter_of-the_OLED I wouldn't call Nintendo lazy for not porting every game from the Wii U or 3DS eShop to Switch. That is a very complicated process and a lot of those games are not even published by Nintendo. Nintendo is also not Microsoft where they can sink millions into a vanity project. It is also not Nintendo's responsibility to port 3rd party's games for them.
Is it maybe disappointing that Nintendo is not porting these games? Yes. But, using the word lazy is very disingenuous and I think you know that.
@MrHonest I think Sony doesn't care about Xbox because this games performance will be literally non-existent in Japan(hell, it probably wont even sell in the west on Xbox), while Nintendo is literally eating up the entire Japanese market.
This could've easily been a strategic buy in of "You can release it on everything but 1 console that is dominating us".
I want to play it on ps5 anyway seeing smt v didn't run the best on switch, but it still sucks for people who only have a switch.
@Itachi2099 The Switch is dominating everyone. It is projected to overtake the PS4 by the end of this year in sales. I think it is very foolish for Atlus to not bring Soul Hackers 2 to Switch, but I don't think Sony has that level of control over this series.
I'm expecting a Switch release later down the line. Nothing about their press release says it won't happen.
Why the hell is it on Xbox when SMT is known for Nintendo and PlayStation consoles?
Players in the west would usually buy the game on a switch or PlayStation plus with Xbox being mostly shunned in japan it makes no sense
@Itachi2099 Of course they care about Xbox. Blame Atlus for ignoring Switch.
@Vincent294
You’re joking right. SMT5 runs great on switch where are you coming from on this?
This is weird. Persona 5 I get why, but this game I would expect to be on the Switch. I don't think it has anything to do with hardware issues and by the early looks of it, P5 Strikers looks like a more demanding game. Well, it releases a month ahead of Xenoblade 3 so I will just wait for a sale on the PS4 store. Likely won't be able to play it as much as I would like though.
@gcunit I have a feeling it might have a chance to get ported at a later date. If that's the case, they might announce it on a direct or something. Hope you are right!
@GameOtaku it's a pretty safe bet to know when someone hasn't played SMT5 if all they say about it is "bro it runs really bad, digital foundry video!!1!!"
@ShadowofTwilight22 If it has to be proven by a technical expert that it doesn't run well, it's definitely not significant for the common gamer.
@GameOtaku No its not. Don't be a blind fanboy
@Itachi2099
Gamer: This looks really good for a Switch game
Digital Foundry: It has some technical stutters
Gamer: IT RUNS REALLY BAD!!!
Seriously, most of technical issues people point out is mostly nitpicking (for some reason, way more people nowadays claim to get eye disorders and vision problems for any less than 60fps than in the Playstation era). I know that It's Digital Foundry's to go deep into graphical technicalities but way too many take they words as gospel
@Itachi2099 It really does have issues. I put 100 hours into it and there are absolutely noticeable frame drops.
Aww that's a shame. It looks like another UE4 game, maybe they have higher graphical fidelity in mind for it. Good thing I just picked up a Series S
A Japanese publisher not releasing their new game on Japan's most popular platform in the Nintendo Switch is baffling. It sucks for Switch collectors like me, but otherwise it's not a huge loss since you can play it on so many other platforms.
Strange that it's coming to PS4 but not Switch. Could understand if it was PS5/XSX/PC only.
Nah ..it does not look even that good in the first place ...it looks more like a weird mix of Tokyo Mirrage Session and Persona and less like a Soul Hackers game.
@GameOtaku Actually playing it, can confirm it struggles. Tons of pop-in and frame drops. It's definitely playable, but it's not Mario Kart 8. I like the Switch for what it is but its days of miracle ports are looking further every time I look in the rear view mirror. No point in stanning the Switch.
This is utter BS. I was waiting on hands and knees and went to that website where I looked at the countdown periodically. Atlus is so annoying. I’m gutted.
Good luck selling this game in Japan 🤣
Switch fans got Persona 5'd
@Sinton A lot of games on Xbox One and PS4 run like Switch ports now. 720p, lots of pop in, fuzzy shadows, and the usual cutbacks. The Switch is like 2/3 the GPU power of an Xbone docked, 1/3 portable, and half the RAM, probably 1/4-1/3 the CPU. I doubt this game hits the CPU hard, but it definitely will hit the GPU. I doubt this would be easy to port, and impossible to same day launch.
Tf even is Soul Hackers? LMAO
(Honestly tho what is it with Atlus and having some of the downright WORST marketing possible?? Ffs I found out about SMT and Persona only because of Smash! 🤣
That's great news!
They should have rewritten the sentence "Soul Hackers 2 inherits the essence of Devil Summoner: Soul Hacker, while evolving the game concept with a more defined art style," to "Soul Hackers 2 inherits the essence of Devil Summoner: Soul Hacker, while evolving the game concept with a more generic art style,"
I'm disappointed this looks less like Soul Hackers and more like Persona with some Cyber Sleuth vibes.
Either Switch port is coming later or someone really wants this to not sell in Japan.
@Pikachupwnage The announcement trailer is also on Atlus West with English subs saying it's coming on August 26th so we only have to wait an extra day instead of 4-6 months.
@Vincent294 Switch only has 390gflops in docked mode, and half of that in portable mode. That makes it barely double the xbox 360 power. It's not a 1:1 of the Shield tv like many people think. Which is why 3rd party AAA games that make it the switch are considered "miracle ports".
@danemord Yeah the amount of people suddenly having eye problems under 60 fps is quite amusing, especially when more than half of it comes from 13 year olds.
@Savage_Joe
Having seen the trailer, there is no technical reason why the game can't run on Switch. This game isnt close to pushing any graphical boundaries whatsoever.
@Savage_Joe There's more to GPU than flops. The Switch is easily more powerful than a 360. Look at Skyrim. My whole point anyways is that it is still a far cry from an Xbox One, which is what the comment section is arguing about. I am already unpopular to acknowledge the Switch is not a powerhouse, but even I know it's not that bad.
@westman98 yeah. That game is possible on Switch. Like many others said, this is Atlus being idiots again. What I tried to explain was that people still have an erroneous perspective of the Switch's power, believing it has the same specs as the vanilla X1.
Not releasing on Switch is extremely idiotic.
I'll just buy on Steam for Steamdeck- I'm getting my hybrid play one way or another.
But I'll be sure to wait for a deep, deep sale to ensure as little money goes to Atlus for this as possible.
@ShadowofTwilight22 I don't think he said it runs flawlessly (at least not here). I would say though that I also think it runs great, everything considered. It's doesn't run perfectly of course, but it's definitely in the high end for games with demanding graphics.
I guess I just get tired of channels like Digital Foundry since way too many people use it for hate preaching, even though the majority would never have notised or been bothered by most technical issues in games if it wasn't directly pointed out to them
Atlus is an enigma that does it's own thing. What a bunch of morons.
Another case of Sony dropping money to make a japanese game skip the switch. Boycott Sony and you will stop their toxic grip over the industry that is destroying Japan.
> Producer + director of the game are the same ones from TMS#FE
> Similar gameplay loop to TMS#FE
> Takes some assets from SMTV
> Not a graphical showcase or an open-world game
Not on Switch 🤔
@glaemay But this game isn't Playstation exclusive so why is Sony the one to blame for it not coming to Switch
@Kirbo100 Because Nintendo fanboys are making conspiracy theorys, at least it's only about video games.
@glaemay Wew that’s a bad faith comment there, SH2 is also on Xbox and PC.
Oh well, no Switch, no Money.
I don't know how Atlus dont still realize that JRPG money is on Switch.
@Kirbo100 To be fair, a total of 1000 copies will be sold on Xbox and most of PC users will wait for 90% discounts, so feasibly only Sony will be making money on this.
@ArchRex XBOX isn't nearly as popular in Japan (so no competition there), and PC isn't a console.
Atlus being Atlus.
I’ll play it on my Series X but it skipping Switch seems…ill advised.
Atlus Switch support is dismal. SMT V is exclusive, and we got a port of Tokyo Mirage Sessions, but when you look at the number of 3DS titles they offered it really makes me wonder what has happened with them, and why they haven't been seizing the opportunity to have their games on Japan's most popular console.
@crudfish 3DS games are cheaper to make than Switch games. HD art assets are easy to take for granted.
Ah, so basically "Devil Summoner 3", so to speak. Looking forward to the Switch version which I have little doubt will just show up in a later Direct. I mean, who would seriously humour the thought of a year 2022 where a JRPG - let alone an SMT one without Latin words in the title - comes out on a pastgen XBox but not on Switch?😆
Catherine Full Body took its sweet time as well, but here we are.
A shame (and slightly annoying) as it would be ideal for the Switch. The first game was good. I liked it.
@danemord
The issues people had with SMTV wasnt that its not 60fps but that it has trouble maintaining 30.
this is usually the case with any switch game which is considered to have poor performance (MHstories 2, Age of calamity etc) Games that have trouble hitting 30fps or have generally unstable framerates.
Technical aspects of a game are one of the things which can be objectively measured and scored, its up to the player to see videos like the DF ones and see if its something that would impact their enjoyment of the game.
its like ive mentioned in another topic, its fine to enjoy something despite these issues (im happy that they can, more power to them) but when you get people outright dismiss the criticisms of those who do have an issue with it (such as accusing people of "whining" or calling them "entitled" and the like) then it becomes more of an issue.
in terms of this game, i imagine that as more developers make the transition to ps5/xsx etc then the switch may be less viable as a platform outside of cloud. Looking at other cross gen games like Tales of arise the "last gen" ports are on a system which have higher specs than the switch. This isnt a "nintendoomed" situation since there are still many games which will come to switch, just that it feels like there will be a few more multiplatform games missing out on the system (though i imagine we will see them on the switch successor)
@sanderev Ok, but what they’re saying is literally wrong in this case lol
@crudfish There's also P5 Strikers, Nocturne HD, Catherine Full Body, P4 Arena Ultimax, and 13 Sentinels. It's not the most amazing lineup but they aren't completely ignoring the Switch.
Wow, they actually went with a sequel. Good on Atlus.
I'll buy it on PS5 day one, even though as of yet I still can't get my grubby mitts on a PS5. Might also be a good time to go back to the original Soul Hackers on 3DS and finish that one.
@ShadowofTwilight22 I just gave another Switch example of a belated multiplat, Catherine. Soul Hackers itself was a 3DS exclusive last gen. So the argument is the tritely memetic Persona 5 against... how many Atlus games across the last decade of Nintendo platforms?
I can't wait for this. And this will come to the switch but later. Like every other third-party game nowadays.
@Pikachupwnage
I’ve noticed no drops at all. Maybe I’m actually focusing on playing the game to notice as pretty much everyone should be doing.
@Kirbo100
Most of those games though requires you to have played the original game (P4, P5, Soul Hackers). Atlus could realistically double down and rerelease those as well to get new fans vested in the story and lore.
@Mgalens
As someone who doesn't care too much about the SMT performance issues, as to me it doesn't hurt the game a lot (partly because it is turn based combat).
I absolutely agree with you, that there is a difference between not caring about a problem and a problem not existing.
It comes down to this whole topic of objective vs subjective criticism, with some arguing that objective criticism doesn't exist. Grinds my gears every time...
This is a good example, as the performance issues are objectively there. Maybe you don't care, that would be subjective, but it doesn't make the objective issue disappear.
@ShadowofTwilight22 right, I forgot that this fandom can't weather long waits. If only Switch had games.😄
Skipping Switch? Wow, that sucks. I thought MegaTen stuff was pretty much guaranteed for the console.
Well, this is why I also own other platforms. Still super excited. Day one!
@ShadowofTwilight22 only exclusivity conspirologists blame Sony in such scenarios, but doesn't Sega own Atlus?
@Kirbo100
I even own Nocturne on Switch (and love it), but forgot about it. 😅
I guess I shouldn't post things in the morning before having caffeine.
Still, as far new titles, I don't get it. Maybe it's because the transition to HD gobbled up the smaller teams? Before, we had Etrian Odyssey games, Persona Q, Multiple SMT games, and spin offs. None of them were ports.
@SpiderSquid Persona 6 will be a PS5 exclusive. But Switch got SMT5 so fair is fair.
@GameOtaku
"I’ve noticed no drops at all. Maybe I’m actually focusing on playing the game to notice as pretty much everyone should be doing."
To be honest, I find that kinda surprising in this case.
I tend to not care nearly as much about performance issues as the average guy, I think my brain tends to just ignore them to a degree.
But in the case of SMT V, I found the issues to be very noticable at times, even causing me to time an attack wrong one time, because it suddenly startet stuttering (I mean for initiating combat).
Still not a big issue for me, as it runs fine most of the time and the combat itself is turn based anyway.
Can't say I didn't notice the issue though.
It boggles the mind that they are releasing it on the failing Xbox but have left out the super successful Switch
Atlus hates money.
My guess is Atlus doesn't have the resources or knowhow to get this game on Switch, at least initially. It certainly looks like it could run on Switch, especially in a world with Sabre Interactive, but on Atlus' end they can drop basically the same SKU on the other 5 platforms with little necessary optimization.
Also, people saying the lion's share of SMT fans are on Switch is a bit misleading. Persona proper outsells the rest of the series by a wide, wide margin, so it makes sense to be on PlayStation.
I will concur though, Atlus' business decisions are routinely bizarre!
I almost felt bad for the switch owner, but I remembered they had SMT V all for themselves...I guess they deserve it, lol
@ShadowofTwilight22 I actually did, thanks.
@crudfish The 3DS had a fair share of enhanced rereleases/remakes. Strange Journey Redux, Survivor Overclocked/Record Breaker, Soul Hackers, Perfect Chronology, EO Untold 1+2. Sure they add stuff to said games but they're not completely new games.
The reason as to why their output isn't as large is most likely, as Vincent said, that 3DS games are cheaper to develop than modern HD games. Plus a lot of them probably reuse assets to save time/money so it's faster to pump them out.
This makes no sense at all.
@MrHonest for this game on Xbox, I am assuming SEGA told (forced) Atlus to release it on Xbox.
@Royalblues
Not knowing what the differences are, doesn't make them disappear though.
I have an OLED tv here and I love the perfect black it can produce, among other things, it can make one hell of a difference if you watch things where that comes into play.
If I had never seen an OLED and owned an QLED, I would still notice that the blacks are not perfect, like I always noticed that on LCD based tvs in the past as well.
I know my experience would be better if this issue was solved, I know that, even if I don't know that OLED exists.
Knowing the issue is the reason why I wanted an OLED in the first place, I don't need a side by side comparison for that.
I agree with you though generally, when it comes to very slight differences that you wouldn't even notice at all, normally.
Some people tend to overreact with those very tiny differences.
OLED vs. QLED is not a good example though, imho.
Sometimes differences are big enough that they influence the experience, whether you know the alternatives or not.
That is not saying QLED doesn't have it's advantages as well, of course, I could make similar arguments in reverse.
Well, if they make it Physical for the Xbox One, then I might just get it. (Haven't touch the Xbox in like 3+ years with a game, and I don't own a PS4/5. And I am going to pass on the PC version most likely.)
SMTV runs so poorly on Switch that it shouldn't be surprising to anyone that this game skips the platform. They aren't lazy if the hardware they are given is difficult to optimize for. Sometimes all that extra amount of effort needed doesn't pay off in the end. I'm sure it's gonna sell well on pc and atlus is probaly satisfied with this decision.
@glaemay tell me you’re pulling stuff from the air without telling me you’re pulling stuff from the air.
@Kirgo
As long as performance doesn’t hinder gameplay it’s perfectly fine as is.
i didn't have much faith in atlus to make a soul hackers sequel and i was 100% right from the looks of it, have to echo the sentiments of those saying this looks like TMS#FE/digimon cyber sleuth and i don't know how much i can trust the story to be a knockout after SMTV was decidely middling
Sees Xbox. Watched trailer.
Wait. Is this a Persona 6 fan demo? I failed to connect that to Soul Hackers or Devil Summoner.
@Sinton honestly that's the weirdest thing as I feel like the Switch is also the primary platform for jRPGs these days to boot, especially in Japan where the PS5 struggles still in total sales iirc.
This said there's been games whose Switch versions were revealed separately by Nintendo themselves in a Direct.
@Ludovsky thats true. If I remember correctly, Life Is Strange True Colors was revealed in like March or April.
It wasn't announced for Switch until Nintendo E3 direct
@UltimateOtaku91 doubt it could run on switch.
@TimGibson Xbox Series is the fastest selling Xbox so far in its lifespan. Don't spout nonsense just because you hate the brand.
Yeah from what I’m seeing this is another Atlus game like P5 that could run on Switch, but Atlus being Atlus arbitrarily picking platforms to omit for no reason like with what they did with P5/SMT V/P4G
Anyone that thinks this would sell more on Xbox then on Switch is deluding themselves
Anyway I agree Atlus barely did anything for the Switch compared to the 3DS era. We are long past the point of “Switch needs to prove itself to be a viable platform” days
It is going to sell zero copies on PS5, people buying PS5 are expecting top of the line graphics, not something that looks marginally better than Tokyo Mirage Sessions. I'm guessing this is a Sony funded project, at least partially for limited exclusivity, otherwise it makes no sense to not bring it to Switch as the primary development platform.
@Troll_Decimator if sony paid for exclusivity then it wouldn't be coming to xbox or pc either.
Also persona 5/5 Royal sold over 5 Million copies so yeah playstation players do like these games.
@Royalblues
I have been in a situation like that recently again myself.
It was a comparison between DLSS and FSR in a game. they have shown zoomed in screenshots were you could see slight differences. They pointed to some letters in the far distance that were slightly harder to read in one case compared to the other.
It's always a bit surprising to see how many people there are in the comments talking about the major differences, when I would bet that, if you would show them gameplay of only one version, even after they have seen the comparison, and ask them "is this DLSS or FSR now?", they wouldn't be able to tell.
I think no one could, at least in that case, lol.
When it comes to te Switch, it mainly sells because of it's portability and the exclusives. I am not sure if the comparison to an Xbox is even relevant for the sales.
@UltimateOtaku91 Good point, I didn't notice that it's also on XBox. Persona 5 is one of the best JRPGs of all time, though, those are very modest sales given how good it is and how much it has been promoted by Sega, Sony & word of mouth. Wasn't it even a GOTY contender? Soul Hackers won't sell anywhere near that much despite being a multiplatform. The Switch would have been an easy homerun. Maybe they just need more time to port it. Just looking at the game, it doesn't look very detailed or anything, it should be portable.
@ShadowofTwilight22 It doesn't need to sell lots of copies to add value to their platform, also as it was pointed out, it is not a Sony exclusive.
@ShadowofTwilight22 Don't get me wrong, I still believe it will sell 0 copies. By which I mean well below a million across all platforms. This type of game sells best on Switch because the userbase doesn't expect top notch graphics to get hyped for something.
@ShadowofTwilight22 Obviously, even if I mage an absolutely garbage game on Unity in 5 minutes someone is going to buy it, so literal 0 sales are not possible, but 500k or lower is not good by any stretch. Of course some Playstation players like JRPGs, but it's a rather niche group. It used to be bigger in the PS2 up to Vita days, but nowadays Sony themselves are focusing too much on Western AAA games.
@Troll_Decimator this is a guess but a few months ago data miners found some mention of a playstation version in shin megami tensei 5's code, so maybe switch gets a year exclusivity to SMT 5 whilst playstation/xbox get souls hackers 2 and then after a year SMT 5 comes to other consoles and soul hackers 2 goes to switch.
Totally bummed by this. SMT on a Nintendo platform has been a given since SMT IV on 3DS almost 10 years ago. Even weirder is that the first Soul Hackers was finally localized as a 3DS exclusive.
If it doesn't get a Switch version later like Atlus did with 13 Seintenls and Catherine Full Body, I guess I'll grab it on Steam Deck when I get that.
Shame. After playing SMT V, I was excited for more SMT games on Switch since it's the only platform I own. But since it's not coming to Switch, I no longer care about it.
And yet you're reporting on it anyway. Lots of filler on this site.
@ShadowofTwilight22 I'm anything but nice, but I do try to restrain my fan mentality. If there are no obvious or officially explained reasons not to expect a port like this, I'll be wholeheartedly expecting it whenever it may come, but I also cling to awareness that none of these companies are obliged to port stuff just because my entertainment preferences so dictate. Yet while there's room for optimism, I'm not foreign to long waits either - like I often say, I'll hope for ports like Dishonored and FFXIII on Switch as long as Switch gets games at all.😄 But in the meantime, I'm definitely not starving for other games to play.
Worst case scenario, a PS4 port might do the trick - turn-based JRPGs should gel well with Vita controls. But hey, I still don't even invest in Persona 5 on PS4 (if partly because I'm still way behind in Revelations endgame anyway). I just aim to take these things in stride as an audience member and celebrate the happenings more than lament the absences. Switch has already buried me under a mound of games I once had no hope of properly playing with my schedule and lifestyle.
yeah not falling for that one. Give it a year. It will be on switch. I'll have my coins saved up Atlus.
@UltimateOtaku91 My best guess would simply be that Switch version needs more time, it always takes more work to get a game to run well on it.
@DrDaisy To be fair, the original article was written before the announcement of platforms. Considering SMT games have come to Nintendo consoles before, the Soul Hackers 1 remake in particular being exclusive to 3DS, it wasn't that strange NL made an article on the upcoming reveal and then updated the article when the game and platforms were announced.
My Steam Deck now has a launch title whenever ‘after Q2’comes.
This looks fantastic and I love how soon it is coming, but I do miss the 90s retro vibe of the first game, and I don’t see many connections to it or Devil Summinor, as yet anyway.
@Troll_Decimator
"but 500k or lower is not good by any stretch."
Considering BotW needed to sell 2 million copies to be profitable, there's a good chance 500k copies across all platforms for this would be profitable
@shaneoh Profitable, yes, by the way the first Soul Hackers sold below 100k copies, and that might be borderline profitable, too, but profitable != good.
