Update: Developer Psyonix has provided another small update on its progress in fixing Rocket League's current split-screen multiplayer issue.
Responding to a fan on Reddit, a Psyonix representative said:
"Hi folks, if testing goes well, splitscreen support should return on Nintendo Switch with our game update next month (the same one featuring the new community flags we talked about yesterday).
This has been on the Known Issues list for a few months now, and it's always been our goal to bring it back. Thanks, everyone!"
So, hopefully we'll be seeing a fix in December? Fingers crossed!
Original Article (Sun 25th Oct, 2020 15:55 GMT): Believe it or not, but it's now been over a month since the split-screen multiplayer mode mysteriously disappeared from the Nintendo version of Rocket League. This happened around the same time it went free-to-play.
Fortunately, Psyonix hasn't forgotten about it. Just hours ago, the developer responded to a player with the following tweet:
The previous update via the official Rocket League support page was much the same:
"Split-screen mode is currently unavailable for Nintendo Switch. We are working on resolving this issue."
As you can probably guess, players who regularly used this mode before it went missing aren't happy. Here are some of the latest reactions over on Twitter:
If we hear anything else from Psyonix, we'll be sure to let you know.

They still haven’t brought split screen back. How? It was in the code before the update. Did they remove it or something?
Going free to play seems to have been a mistake. Once again a companies greed ruined a good game.
I bought this game solely to play local multiplayer with my family. Psyonix making it free and making that temporarily not an option feels like a huge slap in the face.
I was skeptical of Epic Games buying Psyonix. Not because it's cool to hate on Epic Games. I want a good Steam competitor, but my optimism in the Epic Games Store turned to disdain. Instead of improving the Epic Games Store they threw money at developers for exclusives. The only silver lining is that money helped developers I love pay the bills. I knew Epic would kill the Linux version of Rocket League and pull it from Steam, but I did not anticipate them messing up the Switch version. I figured if they took all this time for the hate to blow over they would get the transition right. I looked at the Switch as the backup plan. If they messed up the PC version I would have the Switch to fall back to. But even that got messed up. This transition has been a mess.
Thanks for the update. I wonder how they broke splitscreen mode?
Imagine buying the game to play splitscreen with your friends or family, just to have it taken away, and for this long. I'm willing to bet Switch players won't receive any compensation like in game credits for this.
I wondered of it would go away for good when it went free to play, since I assumed it would always need to be connected to the internet as most free to play games are. I’m actually relieved to hear that they will patch it back in! Otherwise I was thinking the physical copies of the game would become rare and valuable because it would include the un-updated version you could play offline...
@Nermannn I am expecting them to turn around to say, “to optimise the game for the full enjoyment of all players, we have taken the decision to remove local multiplayer to give developers time to improve on the core gameplay. we thank you for your understanding.”
Bought it when it was first released on Switch. Used to enjoy playing local with my sons. Oh well.
Split screen was the only reason I bought and play RL on the Switch. In fact, I don't care about online at all. It was great. Now they took it away. Thanks guys. Stay classy.
@Vincent294
It’s hilarious how awful the epic store app is, it’s slower and has less features than the Nintendo store app on Switch which is astonishing. It being so bad is a sign to me that Epic is acting in bad faith and don’t really care about creating a Steam competitor.
Is this grounds for refunds in certain regions?
You bought a game and they took away a core feature, taking away something you paid for.
What I learnt from this article: Lots of fathers who play this game splitscreen with their sons.
Super lame that our purchases don't migrate to other consoles. That'd be a nice fix, but it's unlikely
@Cosats It's even more important than that.. being a team with my son, is one of the ways to get him talking about his day, especially when he is with his mum... (when you send him a text 'how was your day', he just says ók', you know high school kids...)
Basically I am at the point where I see the devs and Epic as scammers. This game was bought in good faith and they have completely dumped on those who already owned the game.
They MUST have known about the issue before they went free to play and the fact they did so knowing it would upset the existing user base is disgusting - but hey, here's a battle pass to win wheels with llamas on them.
I think it is despicable to be honest
My theory is it’s something about Epic. Epic added splitscreen for PS4 and Xbox on Fortnite, but excluded Switch. Now right as it goes free to play and Epic is involved, it’s gone. I truly believe Psyonix will work to get it back, as they have helped me with multiple issues in the past. Really want to play with my friends again.
@TechaNinja : It should be grounds for a lawsuit.
@Silly_G if Bungie can remove the first two years of content from Destiny 2 I doubt that there's grounds for a lawsuit with a developer removing a game mode.
You would have to read the RL terms and conditions but most state that you don't own the game or contents and your purchase simply grants access to the game and any services available at point of use.
I'm looking forward to split screen coming back so I can play with fam.
I started using a keyboard for quick chat in Rocket League on the Switch. Just plug the keyboard into the dock, and you're good.
Good news! Love rocket league on the switch
@Sourcecode It's weird they broke it when Epic Games bought Psyonix.
@bobzbulder I wonder
Come one Pysonix, I've been waiting for the past two months.
