Since Nintendo is dead set on a retail release of the game, here's a simple solution. They should have pre-installed 3 of the mini-games on every Switch to both show off the tech and encourage interested people into buying the full retail release. The full retail release should then be at a budget price to make it more of an impulse buy ($20 or $30). It's a simple and elegant solution that makes just about everyone happy (granted, someone is always gonna complain but I feel this would have been the most balanced approach). It would kind of be like the original Nintendo DS launch with the Metroid Prime Hunters: First Hunt cart which showed off the tech of the DS while getting people hyped for the full release.
Great to hear it's still coming but that confirmation would have been helped by an actual retail release date. Also, how about THQ Nordic take a little time and patch the crashes in Darksider's II Wii U (I don't need everything fixed, just the system crash bugs). I like the game but it has crashed on me soo many times that I'm having trouble completing it. I know it's an old title but it would be a nice gesture for the Wii U fans who'll be buying Darksiders Warmastered.
Personally, I like amiibo's but there is one thing I would really love Nintendo to do in support of them. I would like to see a Diablo style "hack n slash" game themed around the Nintendo universe that exclusively uses the amiibo's for your characters (leveling, loot and character growth saved to the figures). Similar in concept to earlier Skylanders titles but much lighter on the story and cinimatics and more focused on gameplay (Torchlight II springs to mind). Pre-built levels would be nice but I'd be fine with procedural level generation to save on development cost and increase replay value. Basically theme the levels around the many Nintendo worlds like Metroid, Mario, Zelda, Pokemon, Kid Icarus, Star Fox, Kirby, Chibi Robo, etc. (the possibilities are endless). Lastly and most important, 2-4 player local co-op is an absolute must! This would be an amazing exclusive game for the Switch as the simple controls would work perfectly with the Joycon's and would surely cause a massive spike in amiibo sales. Make it happen Nintendo.
So it's the Wii U version minus the asymmetrical feature. It's cool that Switch is getting the game but it sounds like the Wii U version will still be the definitive option. Right now, I'm more interested about what Ubisoft has in store for titles such as Steep and the possible rumored BG&E 2 and Rabbids/Mario RPG if those are even happening.
This is exactly why I don't trust Capcom to "reboot" or bring Mega Man back. They view it strictly as a product and nothing more. As a result, they will approach it as something to exploit based on its legacy with fans. Most of the creative people who had passion for the series have long since moved on from Capcom so their only real option is to farm the series to other developers. If they were smart and handed it over to a company like Wayforward, Mega Man would have a shot of coming back but I'm willing to bet Capcom doesn't want to spend the money to get a talented team to do things the right way. They want cheap, quick games that require little effort so they can cash in on the Mega Man nostalgia that fans have for the series. This is why I made my peace with the series long ago. Personally, my wish is that Capcom would sell the Mega Man IP to Nintendo so they could bring it back properly. Maybe it's just me but Mega Man just doesn't "feel" right on other systems, he's always felt at home in Nintendo's universe and his inclusion in Smash Bros felt way more natural than characters like Ryu, Solid Snake or Cloud.
@DanteSolablood Yes, I agree which is why I was specifying free downloads and carryover for existing customers, not giving it away free to everyone. As for the associated costs, I think Nintendo has built that into the cost of the individual games which is why they are perceived as being so much higher than similar services elsewhere. My complaint has never been the cost of the titles as I understand things such as servers, licensing, etc. but their handling of existing customers owning multiple systems is atrocious. For example, I supported Earthbound day 1 at full price for the Wii U but now I'm expected to rebuy it at full price if I want to play it on the go on my "New" 3DS XL even though my account which is attached to both systems shows I own it on Wii U!? If I had known that would happen, I absolutely would've waited to have it on the go with the 3DS. If this is fixed with Switch and my titles carry over, I will be happy to use the service in the future but if existing owners are expected to rebuy a NES title (let's use Legend of Zelda as an example) for a 4th time! then I'm out on using the service and will stick to new Switch games and just collect the retro titles strictly in physical format. This is a chief reason why I despise the "digital" format so much as it wrestles ownership and consumer rights away from the buyer and then sells the BS that digital is the future and we should embrace it because it's so much better. Sorry for the deviation but I've grown so very tired of the whole digital argument as people continually get screwed by it and just accept it instead of fighting back and stop using the services.
Honestly, after 2 home console generations and 1 portable generation of Virtual Console, Nintendo needs to get its crap together so loyal customers don't have to keep repurchasing past digital games. The Switch NEEDS to allow ALL current Nintendo "members" to redownload past Virtual Console titles at no additional cost (we did already buy them!). Do that and I'll happily support future Virtual Console titles (GameCube) and even some existing ones.
As it stands now, my support for the service has drastically decreased over the years. I'm still pretty steamed that I not only have to purchase an "upgrade" of all the Wii VC titles I already paid for (sometimes with degraded visuals on the more powerful system, "cough" NES "cough") in order to play them natively on Wii U but also the BS that a large chunk of them STILL can't be brought over to Wii U natively after 4 YEARS!! I'm looking at you Turbo Graphx, Sega Genesis, Master System and even some NES, SNES, N64, etc. Yes, I know they can be play on the backwards compatibility Wii Mode but it's clunky and I can't use the GamePad alone without a Wii Remote in hand. The service has been nice but it leaves a LOT to be desired as time goes on.
Hey Nintendo, where is the Samus Theme for North America? How about the Kid Icarus Short Films that were made available to Japan? How about something to spend our "coins" on that DOESN'T require us spending additional money (honestly, this discount crap is getting to be the only thing available as a "reward")? Honestly, I was fine with the shift to FREE digital rewards versus physical but My Nintendo is getting to be more and more worthless as time goes on. It is coming off more as a scam to get people to buy more digital instead of "rewarding" loyal customers.
I've got just about everything listed and love em although it is odd to see such an oversight by not including titles such as Lone Survivor or Master Reboot!? Great games that absolutely deserve the attention for Halloween.
I'm still a bit salty over the Fatal Frame V situation in North America. I played the demo and loved it but simply don't have enough storage on my system for the full version and I'm not gonna go through the cost of upgrading my storage for a single game this close to the launch of the Switch. As a fan of the series (I have Fatal Frame 1, 2, 3 and Spirit Camera), I am really ticked that Nintendo never released a physical copy yet did 2 freakin print runs on Devil's Third!
I understand that physical rewards are out of the question (it was cool while it lasted) and I'm honestly fine with that but I hate the focus on "discounts" on digital games (I can deal with the Platinum Coins but how the Gold Coins are handled is ridiculous). The Rewards should give loyal customers free digital goods (which costs Nintendo nothing) since we already bought their games to begin with and are willing to go through the effort of doing the program. It's how their old version (Club Nintendo) worked and I'm saddened that they abandoned that approach. We all know that the casual consumer will never bother My Nintendo so it feels like a jab at their most loyal customers.
I also can't stand that the program completely shuns physical gamer's when it comes to the Gold Coins. It feels like a slimy tactic to try and get their more hardcore fans to switch to buy digital for retail titles. It's cool that it rewards people who buy Indie games but then spits in the face of cheaper under $5 games (why not offer 5 gold coins for that tier?). Also, why the hell are they still gating some of the rewards to specific regions? I understand if something is truly region specific but why has North America STILL not gotten the Samus 3DS theme when that market is the largest for Metroid?
To be clear, I appreciate that Nintendo even offers the program and will continue to participate but right now, it often feels like a scheme to get people to buy more digital stuff both coming and going which doesn't feel very rewarding at all.
@gardevoir7 Nintendo generally lets fan albums go provided they aren't done commercially. Check out OverClocked Remix which has released dozens of great fan albums over the years (a lot based on Nintendo made games) with no interference from Nintendo. Nintendo even allowed a limited physical commercial release of the fan Twilight Princess album from Zelda ReOrchastrated.
I'm wondering if they got in trouble for all the Copyrighted music and that's why they switched it to free in the guise of a promo? The coins put me over 60 so now I can get the Mario Kart DLC which is cool but I just had to try it out of morbid curiosity and good lord did this shock me with how bad it was. To be fair, I've only done 3 of the games so far but wow! The Haunted House game was just sad, uninspired and choppy. The 3D "Platformer" was barely playable and the overhead shooter forces you through its painfully long opening every time! I'm gonna grit my teeth and get through the remaining games and then this is being banished from my Wii U storage forever. I do have to genuinely thank Skunk Software for essentially getting me the Mario Kart DLC so thank you guys.
@electrolite77 Actually, the comparison works perfectly when you consider the time period which was before the economic crisis. Both the 360 and Wii were decimating the PS3 and sales of the system were primarily for Blu-Ray and not gaming. PS3 software sales during the first few years were atrocious meaning that companies should have jumped ship but didn't. The PS3 even had a similar situation to Wii U where it was coming off the massive success of the PS2 like the Wii U was coming off the massive success of the Wii. There are a lot of parallels between the PS3 and Wii U but a major difference is that companies didn't actively jump ship on PS3 before it had a chance to get rolling like they did with Wii U. There's no two ways about it, there was/is a double standard when it comes to EA's attitude towards Nintendo and its systems and that will ultimately effect their ability to win back Nintendo fans if they decide to support NX.
No, but you did put out an insanely lazy group of launch ports and even went out of your way to sabotage some of the titles:
Madden 13: Missing upgraded physic's engine present in 360/PS3 versions, not properly optimized for console resulting in inconsistent framerate. A clearly inferior version of a game that performed better on (at the time) 7 and 6 year old hardware respectively despite the Wii U having superior hardware.
FIFA 13: Lazy port of Fifa 12 passed off as 13. Something they did to original Wii players as well. Once again, A clearly inferior version of a game that performed better on older hardware despite the Wii U having superior hardware.
Mass Effect 3: An already controversial game that was completely sabotaged by EA's announcement of the Mass Effect Trilogy for PS3/360 a mere 2 months before this even launched on Wii U. They also bailed on providing additional DLC the other systems got. This was quite possibly the biggest slap in the face considering Nintendo only fans were missing the superior, earlier games and only getting a third of the series for the same price.
Need for Speed Most Wanted U: Admittedly an excellent game (though this has more to due with the now defunct Criterion than EA) that arrived too late (almost 6 months after other versions). The game was further sabotaged by EA's dropping of DLC support (announced before the game even launched) and the announcement that they had "no games currently in development for Wii U" shortly after this game launched.
There's no way around it, EA wanted to bail on Wii U right out the gate (likely over the Origin deal) and actively pissed all over the system and its fans well before it was even given a proper chance (they had fully jumped ship on Wii U less than 6 months after launch). For comparison, the PS3 sold like hot garbage for its first couple years and yet EA was there plugging away and fully supporting the machine despite the PS3 being difficult to develop for (a similar excuse often leveled at the Wii U). You can debate endlessly the behind the scenes politics but the proof is in the games and how EA handled them. They will have a major uphill struggle getting Nintendo fans to support them on NX "if" they choose to support it.
EA has burned Nintendo fans for quite some time now so they've got some major bridges to rebuild before many core Nintendo fans will even give a crap about what they "may" bring to the NX.
Their atrocious handling of the Star Wars license so far (the franchise most Nintendo fans would be interested in) has all the lazy and greedy stink that permeates a lot of their modern work. Battlefront has set a scary vibe for their future handling of the license considering they still have exclusive rights until 2023 (I bet Disney is wishing they rethought that deal).
Their sports titles are solid but ultimately lackluster yearly updates mainly due to lack of competition which has bred laziness (Madden's NFL exclusivity has not helped that franchise outside of lining EA's bank account). The one true competitor, NBA 2K, has crushed NBA Live every year proving that EA is scared to allow real competition against them.
Need for Speed has become a shell of its past self with its awful online only structure and lack of depth present in past titles. It may be too early to say but Mass Effect Andromeda could easily slip into the vein of the action heavy and much maligned Mass Effect 3 versus the more RPG driven Mass Effect 1 which put the series on the map since some of the key dev crew are gone.
The only title that truly shows promise right now is Battlefield 1 which could be the shot in the arm that the FPS genre needs considering how low the bar has been set by Call of Duty and all of its copycats. The multiplayer looks great but the real test will be the campaign and single player content which will hopefully showcase something special. My current fear is that, like Star Wars Battlefront, they will gate a ton of content behind DLC and Season Passes.
In the end, EA has a lot of work ahead of it before they matter to Nintendo again. If the NX is a success which is a real possibility, EA will dump their sports titles onto it for a quick buck but will likely go back to their habits of dumping lazy feature gimped ports of other titles on Nintendo and then act surprised when they don't sell. They have shown time and time again that if a company isn't greasing their palms for exclusives (like Sony and Microsoft), they will do the bare minimum work and blame anyone but themselves when it fails. I dare EA to prove me wrong.
I think they should go with Generation 2 BUT also add the generation 7 Aloha updates of Gen 1 characters (i.e. The new Sandshrew, Vulpix, etc.). This would hold the attention of existing fans who want Gen 2 while giving a taste of Sun and Moon, ultimately making it a tantalizing sneak peek of Gen 7 for lapsed fans of the main Pokemon series. The best of both worlds. Just a thought.
I've got an idea. How about Nintendo going back into old Wii U/3DS titles and patch in support for amiibo like what they are doing for Animal Crossing but on a larger scale. I can't be the only one who finds it weird that this still hasn't been done for titles like Mario 3D World, Pikmin 3, Donkey Kong Country Tropical Freeze, Wind Waker HD and Nintendo Land (a game BEGGING to be populated by amiibo characters). Also, wear are the likes of Bayonetta and Cloud? Nintendo went oddly silent for the last wave of Smash amiibo.
Let's keep in mind some of the announced titles for the system so far. Dragon Quest 11 and the new Sonic point to close to or equal performance of the PS4. Personally I feel that is more than enough considering we've already moved into the area where the "law of diminishing returns" has begun to take a major toll on traditional console games. Chasing the dragon of graphical horsepower has cause many modern games to stagnate and become too similar to one another when the focus should be on things like gameplay, art design and fun which is part of the reason why the indie games market has exploded over the last 4-5 years.
It's also why I feel that VR will be a fad like 3D TV's. Nintendo, like Microsoft, will likely focus on Augmented Reality and a portable home console could easily feature that making the NX more prepared for the future than Sony's machine. Just a thought.
As a physical collector, I am thrilled for these and think it will be great for the developers as it will get them even more exposure. Would love to see even more of these, especially a Trine set (how about a trilogy set and include the 3rd game). That being said, hey NOA, WHERE IS OUR PHYSICAL RELEASE OF FATAL FRAME V?! How is it that they are doing this (which is great) but their one mainstream release that fans have been begging for a physical release doesn't get one when it is really needed (16GB is ridiculous for a download only retail title on Wii U). Sorry, just really frustrated over that one.
Nice to see updates but how are we over half a year into the Wii U version and they STILL haven't patched in the GamePad touchscreen crafting/item management that the GamePad was designed for? Hey Mojang and 4J, get on that BEFORE the NX comes out.
Honestly, I gotta give Nordic Games major props for this. While "mainstream" third party's have largely crapped all over Nintendo and its fans with sloppy ports, poor support and a lot of double talk, Nordic has actually stepped up to support Nintendo Wii U fans at a time when most would say not to.
I think this strategy is pretty smart and will serve them well when they start putting things on the NX as the hardcore Nintendo owners will be far more likely to trust and support them and their games versus EA, UbiSoft, Warner Bros., etc. who have done a lot of bridge burning with Nintendo fans over the last 4-5 years (in some cases even longer than that). Honestly, their approach got me to take notice as I finally gave Darksiders 2 a shot (great game) leading to me buying Legend of Kay Anniversary (really fun game) which has led me to wait in anticipation for the original Darksiders on Wii U. Kudos Nordic Games, I'm on board when you ultimately release Darksiders 3 on NX.
STILL waiting for the North American physical release. I even asked the creator about it here on Nintendo Life and was told that it was still coming. I have passed on multiple eShop sales due to the promised physical release (which I was willing to pay retail price for) and I'm honestly getting to the point where I'll pass altogether (or maybe I'll get it on a Humble Bundle for a hefty discount). I am happy for the developers that it was successful though, great job guys.
Now let's hope they don't just throw their arms up and decide to not patch the games many technical issues (ala Warner Bros and Arkham Origins). As bad as things are now, imagine the $#!T show that would be. Credit where credit is due, some of the worst indie developers still have the spine to try and fix issues with their games post launch and I would be VERY saddened to see Comcept complete their path of becoming a "typical lazy 3rd party developer" by jumping ship on their product.
Since Xenoblade Chronicles X is not only one of my favorite Wii U games but also one of my favorite RPG's of all time, my anticipate for Breath of the Wild (which was already through the roof) just shot through the stratosphere with this news. I've often referred to XCX as "Exploration Porn" to my friends (one of my favorite aspects of the game) and I had a sneaking suspicion that the new Zelda was getting some help from the XCX team when I saw the scale and scope of the game at E3. Honestly could not be happier at this news.
This is one of those occasions where I'm going to give the game the benefit of the doubt and trust my instinct. It simply has too much hype/controversy surrounding it and "mainstream" reviewers have repeatedly shown their inability to be objective and not allow outside influences taint their scores. A good recent example was Star Fox Zero which has become one of my favorite games in the entire series but most reviewers (Nintendo Life obviously excluded as they actually played the game and understood it) piled on the "it's popular the hate on Nintendo" bandwagon and made the game sound like cancer. All I want from Mighty No. 9 is a fun throwback to the days of Mega Man with a focus on Gameplay, I don't need the thing to be some transcendent reinvention of the Mega Man formula.
It's interesting to note that, despite the MASSIVE difference in hardware sales, Bayonetta 2 on Wii U sold better than Bayonetta 1 on 360 and is only about 200k units away from besting Bayonetta 1 on PS3 (which could still happen). That means a third of the series entire sales came from the Wii U which is pretty damn impressive for a supposed "failed" console.
Platinum and Nintendo will surely take note of that when Bayonetta 3 goes into development and I have a feeling that an NX exclusive version is a pretty solid bet. Especially considering Bayonetta's additional exposure through Smash and her upcoming Amiibo which would no doubt be supported in Bayonetta 3.
Interesting and reminds me of Ganondorf Amiibo on Twilight Princess HD but I was hoping my friends idea of Falco unlocking the N64 Arwing and N64 Level Music would be true since that would have fit with what Fox unlocked.
No offense to the team who made this but why should we go with the expensive mod when we can use a "Wii to HDMI Converter" on a backwards compatible Wii? I have been using one for about a year and for less than $15, this offers same thing minus the menu options they built into the firmaware. Some titles that really shine on Wii with HDMI are Burnout 2, F-Zero GX, Eternal Darkness, Soul Calibur 2, and TimeSplitters: Future perfect. They all support 480P and Widescreen and look brilliant. For those who can afford the mod, grab the converter.
@liveswired Wow...just wow! your argument is a "perfect" 360 port. You are aware that the 360 version came out in May 2012, 6 months BEFORE the Wii U even came out! The excuse that the Wii U hardware is more difficult also doesn't hold water when you consider how different the PS3 hardware is from other systems and even that managed to get a version in 2013. The "720p60, faster loading, 4x npc's can be spawned" had better be there considering the Wii U is more powerful than both the 360/PS3 and has WAY more RAM than either of those machines. The future updates had better be more than "promising" when you consider how many times third party's have claimed to support Wii U DLC/patches only to cancel it later (Batman: Arkham Origins immediately springs to mind).
I also have no idea where you got the idea that Miyamoto has complete disdain for Minecraft? He has said in interviews that he wasn't very familiar with it but still felt it would be a perfect fit for the Wii U and even mentioned the inventory management on the Wii U GamePad (something 4J Studios "forgot" to add). Blaming Nintendo seems to be the knee jerk reaction from fanboys and haters for everything negative even though they aren't to blame in a lot of the situations. More often, it boils down to lazy developers who are more accustomed to the "release now, patch later" culture of current game development.
"People like you are the reason for the Wii U's demise" - that's a pretty bold claim when the Wii U is my primary console since early 2013 (I don't even own a PS4 or XB1 and don't plan to for a variety of reasons). I have over 35 physical games and over 30 digital titles (mainly indie) meaning that I fall into the group who fully supports the console as opposed to being a reason for its "demise".
@OorWullie Sorry but I was referring to US pricing. While I can see that the pricing is based on the forced inclusion of the DLC packs, it doesn't change the fact that the Wii U version is still priced $10 more than every other version (including PS4/XB1 versions which are priced at $20 for a physical copy). The game already features additional DLC options on Wii U like the other versions so why force Wii U players to buy $10 of DLC they may not want? My original point still stands, the Wii U version is being treated as more of an afterthought like just about every other third party title on the system and it's especially crummy considering Wii U owners have had to wait over a year since the last game console port (the PS Vita version which came out in October 2014!).
The PS Vita version even came out a month AFTER the sale of Minecraft to Microsoft so their ownership of the IP can't even be used as an excuse. While I'm happy that Wii U owners have gotten the game, it doesn't change the fact that Nintendo owners are once again given tablescraps and are expected to be appreciative of it.
@faint I was referring to it selling to expectations on the Wii U. I am well aware how much of a sales juggernaut the franchise is and I'm sure it will sell ok on Wii U but it will likely be one of the lowest selling versions. That still doesn't change the fact that the game has managed to make all of the same mistakes as other major third party titles on Wii U which is what I was poking fun at. As a longtime Nintendo owner, I have become quite numb to third party's and how they treat Nintendo fans, something dating all the way back to the N64/GameCube era.
A major third party title for a Nintendo console. Hmmmm, Let's see.
Released 1 day before patch (that all other versions get) but will be patched at a nebulous "future date".
Priced $10 more than every other version for no logical reason.
Complete (and epic) fail to use the consoles feature that was literally custom made for the type of game!
Third party will "act" shocked and stupefied when the game doesn't sell to expectations and will in turn use as excuse to not support in the future.
<sarcasm alert!> Sounds like everything is on track for Minecraft to be a typical third party release for a Nintendo platform. Honestly, I was scared they were gonna get it right when they announced the game for Wii U but I'm happy to see they matched the "high standards" set by third party's before them.<sarcasm alert!>
I like Renegade Kid and Jools a lot but a major problem with all three titles is pricing. Xeodrifter is a fine game but $10 is a bit much for a side project that was completed in a few months. A $5 price would've made a huge difference considering the games length and short development cycle not to mention the well publicized fact that the games development greatly delayed the highly anticipated Treasurenauts. Something that fans were not happy about. The game should have been saved till after Treasurenauts release. It felt similar to Keiji Inafune trying to kickstart the Mega Man Legends spiritual successor before even releasing Mighty No. 9 (the game fans are still waiting for). As for Moon and Dementium, both games are available in physical cart form on the DS cheaper than their digital forms and the 3DS is fully backwards compatible completely cutting the knees off of both games. The graphical upgrades are nice but not major considering they were already technical marvels on the original DS hardware. Moon wasn't helped by its crappy episodic pricing model (I have both the DS original and the first part of the 3DS version and I can say that it is not worth it to double dip). If I were them, I would've taken a little more time and put Moon and the Dementium series on the Wii U, a machine that would've benefited far more from a Metroid style shooter and 2 survival horror shooters considering how starved that audience is for those types of games. Just a thought.
@liveswired I agree that the PS4 is more powerful technically but as you pointed out, that doesn't matter if the games are chock full of bugs, glitches, framerate issues, screen tearing and numerous other problems which have to be patched or DLC'd into a working/complete state. The industry's obsession with "chasing the dragon" in graphics (which is the main focus of most mainstream developers) is a big part of what's killing the industry. Development costs have ballooned way out of control, many studios have fallen, innovation has been stifled (indies are the exception) due to developers being scared of taking risks due to costs resulting from this loop. I will happily take the rock solid 30 or 60 fps offered by most Wii U titles over the erratic framerates of most titles on XB1/PS4. If they have to knock the resolution of a game from 1080p to a solid 720p to maintain a consistent experience, I am completely fine with that. Also, the most impressive thing about XCX is that the game largely runs off of the disc, something that isn't even possible on PS4/XB1 due to their stupid requirement that requires EVERY game be installed to the systems. A long experience breaking process that doesn't even fix the supposed problems it's supposed to.
NOTE: I am not bashing or "hating" on those systems before any fanboys get upset or butthurt, I am simply pointing out differences in their approach compared to Nintendo's approach. If you love those systems, more power to you. I am making this note in hopes of avoiding any fanboy flamewars in this discussion.
And this is one of the reasons why third party's don't like to put stuff on Nintendo consoles, they can't be lazy the way they are on Sony and Microsoft and get away with it. They make all sorts of claims about how weak Nintendo's hardware is and then Nintendo first/second party developers put out incredible games that positively sing on the hardware and in turn, Nintendo owners know they are full of crap when they release poorly optimized and lazy ports. On the other hand, Sony and Microsoft's first party efforts are good but nowhere near the quality of Nintendo's so by comparison, third party games with performance issues on those machines seems more like the norm as opposed to the exception. This has been made even more apparent this generation due to Nintendo doubling down on their Wii U software quality while many third party's were extremely lazy or non-existent. Funny thing is, this generation was Nintendo "learning how to make games in HD" and look at how their games have better performance than titles on the XB1/PS4. Just imagine how amazing their first/second party software will be on the NX now that they now have the needed experience with HD! It will be interesting to hear the excuses from third party's if the NX ends up giving them the hardware power and ease of development they keep whining about with past Nintendo consoles.
@ReshiramZekrom No hesitation, get the Wii U version for the Wii copy. That is the uncontested "real" version of the game. Better graphics, much better gameplay, 4 player multiplayer, actual bonus levels, etc. Avoid the 3DS version unless that is your ONLY option and even then, buy/borrow a Wii for the Wii version. As I've said before, if ANYONE is interested in the game, get the Wii version above all other versions!
Yes, it will be in a Wii U case with a center disc holder for the separate Wii version (similar to the Bayonetta 2 case that has Bayonetta 1). As a nice bonus, there is a Wii instruction book and the cover art is dual sided. 1 side is Wii U version and the other is Wii version so you can copy and put everything in separate Wii case. I did this and it looks nice in my Wii collection.
For those on the fence about the Wii version, don't loose your chance to get it. It is the true version of the game and a solid 8/10. It has some issues (let's be honest, what game doesn't) but if you are even remotely interested in the title, grab the early print run edition that includes the Wii version as it is a great title that will easily go down as a "Wii Hidden Gem". I have put about 4-5 hours into the Wii and 2-3 hours into the Wii U version and it gets harder and harder to return to the Wii U version as it simply breaks the Wii control system on such a fundamental level.
Of particular note is the fact that the game was not meant to have a limited flight mechanic. The Wii version has unlimited flight and simple Wii Remote pointer controls. While it only uses the Wii Remote to "point 'n fly", it is lightyears beyond the broken Wii U/3DS controls which force the analog stick and limited flight. The Wii version of Rodea feels like an evolution of Nights on the Sega Saturn and is a blast to play just like Nights was. Yuji Naka has championed the Wii version and trust me, when you play both, you'll know why as whoever did the Wii U/3DS versions completely broke his vision. Also of note is that the Wii version looks worlds better due to proper color and presentation. Look up the comparison videos on Youtube, they almost look like 2 different games (in fact they are 2 different games due to some different levels, different controls and different presentations).
I feel bad that due to the 3DS/Wii U versions being the focus and in turn getting bad reviews, the game won't get the sequel the Wii version deserves. As I stated before, if the game interests you but you're scared of the review scores, add at least 2 points onto the Wii U/3DS version and you'll get the Wii version. It's a fun game getting buried by 2 crappy and broken "ports".
I have put some time into this game and there is no contest, the Wii version is the "Real" version of the game. I love it and it really does feel like an evolution of both Nights into Dreams and to an extent, what parts of 3D Sonic should have been. I can certainly see why Yuji Naka is urging people to play the Wii version as it is his actual vision. The Wii U version (and the 3DS version it was upscaled from) was apparently not handled by him and boy does it show. As this review illustrates, the Wii U version is clunky, rather ugly, and the control is downright broken due to the game being designed around the Wii Remote and pointer controls (which the Wii U version doesn't support despite having a control option that supports the Nunchuk/WiiMote combo?... and yes, that is as frustratingly stupid as it sounds).
Despite the obvious hardware upgrade, the Wii version is actually better in EVERY category. It looks better (its colors are vibrant and beautiful and almost looks like a completely different game), the controls are worlds better and quite fun, and the game actually runs much smoother than the Wii U version which is bogged by framerate issues. Put simply, if you're interested in this game at all, make sure to get the first print run copy that includes the Wii version and play that version (the REAL version) first and then give the Wii U version a try to see how they messed up Yuji Naka's great game. As for the graphic snobs out there, the Wii version still looks quite nice on an HD TV due to its vastly superior color and simple graphics so please don't snub the game because its not in proper HD. Another cool feature left out of the Wii U version is multiplayer. The Wii version supports up to 4 players! If I were to score the Wii version vs. the Wii U version using this review score as a base, I would personally give the Wii version an 8 while saying that NintendoLife's score of a 6 for the Wii U version is spot on.
@VIIIAxel As the petition states, GameStop exclusive is only one of the options. I'm sure that much like Xenoblade, Nintendo would also carry on their online store. There is also the option of XSEED publishing the title like with Last Story and Pandora's Tower or even Nintendo releasing it exclusively on their own online store (which has become quite robust over the last year). Regardless, the focus should be for a physical release and then supporting said physical release by actually buying it. I don't care for GameStop myself but if that would allow for a physical release, I'll bite the bullet to support the Fatal Frame series and Nintendo.
I'm with everyone here who wants a physical release in North America and I'm gonna test NOA's ability to listen to the fans which they claim to do. This is supposedly why we are even getting Devil's Third. I found the petition to get a physical release and it states that calling Nintendo directly and requesting a disc release will have the greatest impact. I will be doing this and I recommend everyone here who wants a disc release do the same. If you're with me on this, let's also share our results here to see how Nintendo responds.
Here is the number: NOA Customer Support 1-800-255-3700, Ext. 5, then 3
This is not my petition, I am just a passionate fan of both Nintendo and the Fatal Frame series. Let's see if the NintendoLife community can make this happen.

@james_mueller It likely has to do with this all happening in Japan while Nintendo never made a big deal/announcement outside of Japan due to their treatment of the series as an afterthought. Why make an official english language announcement when you don't really plan to do much with it outside if Japan. As I mentioned before, look no further than the back of the box for titles released outside of Japan, the copyright info is right there. This also explains why Nintendo is so tight with Tecmo Koei (Nintendo published Ninja Gaiden 3 for Wii U, Hyrule Warriors, Metroid Other M, the Metroid stage in Dead or Alive Dimensions 3D, etc.).
@james_mueller Not a problem, I have read quite a few articles that mentioned it, this being one: http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/22/report-nintendo-now-co-owns-fatal-frame-ip/ While Tecmo Koei may own the Trademark for Project Zero, Nintendo co-owns all copyrights for the series with Tecmo Koei. The Trademark is just the name/title while the Copyright is for the real meat of the product (audio, visuals, assets, etc.). Just check the back of your Spirit Camera box the the Copyright info and I'm sure the European Project Zero 2 box will have similar Copyright info. Wikipedia also has an entry on it but unfortunately, the source link hasn't been updated:
"While Tecmo Koei remains the sole owner of the Fatal Frame / Project Zero IP and franchise, Nintendo co-owns the rights to Fatal Frame IV, the Spirit Camera spin-off, Project Zero 2: Wii Edition, Fatal Frame V and all future installments of the series."
@DualWielding The article was a little off, Nintendo actually co-owns the franchise with Tecmo Koei. This has been the case since Fatal Frame 4 explaining why the series has been Nintendo exclusive since 2008. Ironically, this also means that Nintendo gets a piece of the older titles sold on the PS Store. What is downright infuriating is that Nintendo doesn't leverage this series potential outside of Japan. While many Gamer's are begging for more true survival horror titles, Nintendo has one of the biggest Survival Horror series outside of Resident Evil and Silent Hill EXCLUSIVELY on their systems and yet they continue to treat it as an afterthought. They should be bringing the previous 4 titles to the Wii U (or even NX in the future) as an HD collection and pimping the hell out of Fatal Frame 5 as a physical release (especially with the loss of Star Fox this year) to help fill the massive void left by that title.
Digital only killed this title for me (I'm a massive physical collector going as far as buying digital titles on disc/cart even if they are cheaper in digital). I was secretly hoping Nintendo would announce some kind of physical plan down the road as an apology for the Star Fox delay. I'm especially salty over Devil's Third getting a physical release over this considering Devil's Third would have been better suited for a digital only release due to the multiplayer heavy nature of the game and the large single player focus of Fatal Frame. I will happily play the Prologue and Chapter 1 & 2 at launch but will continue to hold onto the very slim hope of a physical release in the future. I'm a huge fan of the series and have 1-3 on PS2 in physical as well as Spirit Camera and would happily pay Nintendo $10 extra for the physical version ($60 versus the eShop $50)
Outside of the Rogue-like death mechanic, I really don't see how this will stand out on the PS4/XB1 considering the game was completely built around the Wii U GamePad. As a Survival Horror fan, I love the game on Wii U and don't have a problem with it getting ported (it is an underrated gem that deserves more recognition) but it seems like a really bad move when the graphics don't look much better (hey Ubisoft, It's been 3 years since this game came out!), the main mechanics that made the game unique are gone (the GamePad), and it's a digital only release which means it won't even grab the retail audience that would normally go for this type of game on PS4/XB1. I work at an indie game store and Resident Evil fans who own a PS4/XB1 are shocked and surprised when I tell them they can get the awesome Remake on the digital store (they honestly have no idea these types of games are available). Your average gamer legitimately doesn't know/understand the digital storefronts of the newer machines. This whole thing is as baffling as the Rayman Legends situation in terms of bone headed Ubisoft decisions.
It would have sold more on Wii U had they: 1. Released it close to if not simultaneously as the iPad version 2. Charged the same price (double the price for no reason or extra content is quite ridiculous) 3. Offered a TV option using a Wii Remote to enjoy the visuals off of the GamePad. Is there a reason they couldn't have done this? Seems like a huge missed opportunity. Honestly, I'm surprised they sold as many copies as they did. Good for them but it seems like Wii U (and even Steam) Users got cheated a bit when it comes to pricing.
@arnoldlayne83 I understand that certain parts of the world have a natural preference for Sony but if you're looking for stuff from Sony in 2015, their show was AWFUL. If you were looking for vague promises and 2016 titles, Sony nailed it.
They led the show with a title from 2007 (originally the PS3 poster child) and the game barely looked any different from the original PS3 reveal (8 years ago!) yet we are supposed to be excited for it? Morpheus felt like an Oculus Rift copy (which it largely is) while the Hololens is a true game changer that doesn't blind you from the outside world while playing. They even tried to make a big deal out of Final Fantasy VII Remake which only just began development making it a 2017/2018 title at the earliest!
I will agree that they deserve a solid B+/A- if your looking at 2016 and beyond but considering that we still have half a year left of 2015, they utterly failed to make any type of compelling argument to buy/own the system in 2015.

Re: Feature: Nintendo Switch Countdown - 1-2-Switch Would Have Been Ideal As 'Free-to-Start'
Re: THQ Nordic Reconfirms Darksiders: Warmastered Edition for Wii U
Great to hear it's still coming but that confirmation would have been helped by an actual retail release date. Also, how about THQ Nordic take a little time and patch the crashes in Darksider's II Wii U (I don't need everything fixed, just the system crash bugs). I like the game but it has crashed on me soo many times that I'm having trouble completing it. I know it's an old title but it would be a nice gesture for the Wii U fans who'll be buying Darksiders Warmastered.
Re: Talking Point: The State of Play - amiibo and Its Next Big Move
Re: Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition to Include Touch Controls for Portable Play on Switch
Re: Soapbox: You Should Probably Avoid Capcom's Mega Man Mobile Ports
Re: Poll: How Important is the Virtual Console, and GameCube, for the Nintendo Switch?
Re: Poll: How Important is the Virtual Console, and GameCube, for the Nintendo Switch?
Re: Here Are Your New My Nintendo Rewards
Hey Nintendo, where is the Samus Theme for North America? How about the Kid Icarus Short Films that were made available to Japan? How about something to spend our "coins" on that DOESN'T require us spending additional money (honestly, this discount crap is getting to be the only thing available as a "reward")? Honestly, I was fine with the shift to FREE digital rewards versus physical but My Nintendo is getting to be more and more worthless as time goes on. It is coming off more as a scam to get people to buy more digital instead of "rewarding" loyal customers.
Re: Feature: 20 Wii U and 3DS Games Perfect for Halloween
Re: Poll: Six Months On - How Do You Feel About My Nintendo?
Re: Tribute Album 64 Offers a Whole Lot of Retro Music Remixes for Free
@gardevoir7 Nintendo generally lets fan albums go provided they aren't done commercially. Check out OverClocked Remix which has released dozens of great fan albums over the years (a lot based on Nintendo made games) with no interference from Nintendo. Nintendo even allowed a limited physical commercial release of the fan Twilight Princess album from Zelda ReOrchastrated.
Re: Random: The First Skunk Bundle is Free on the North American eShop Right Now
I'm wondering if they got in trouble for all the Copyrighted music and that's why they switched it to free in the guise of a promo?
Re: EA's Peter Moore: We've Never Said We Won't Develop For Nintendo
Re: EA's Peter Moore: We've Never Said We Won't Develop For Nintendo
"We've never said we won't develop for Nintendo"
Re: EA Talks Possible Plans for NX
Re: Video: Check Out Six Minutes of Yooka-Laylee Footage
If they manage the rumored physical version, this is day one for me. I'm so excited to play this on Wii U!
Re: Talking Point: Pokémon GO's Next Major Update Should Target Gen VII Pokémon
I think they should go with Generation 2 BUT also add the generation 7 Aloha updates of Gen 1 characters (i.e. The new Sandshrew, Vulpix, etc.). This would hold the attention of existing fans who want Gen 2 while giving a taste of Sun and Moon, ultimately making it a tantalizing sneak peek of Gen 7 for lapsed fans of the main Pokemon series. The best of both worlds. Just a thought.
Re: Talking Point: Recent Sales Results Show That amiibo Needs Games For Success, Not Just Collectibility
Re: Rumour: Nintendo NX Will Be Powered By Nvidia's Mobile-Focused Tegra Tech
Re: Nindie Favourites Coming To Wii U Disc Under Nintendo eShop Selects Label
As a physical collector, I am thrilled for these and think it will be great for the developers as it will get them even more exposure. Would love to see even more of these, especially a Trine set (how about a trilogy set and include the 3rd game). That being said, hey NOA, WHERE IS OUR PHYSICAL RELEASE OF FATAL FRAME V?! How is it that they are doing this (which is great) but their one mainstream release that fans have been begging for a physical release doesn't get one when it is really needed (16GB is ridiculous for a download only retail title on Wii U). Sorry, just really frustrated over that one.
Re: Minecraft: Wii U Edition is Receiving Another Patch Soon
Nice to see updates but how are we over half a year into the Wii U version and they STILL haven't patched in the GamePad touchscreen crafting/item management that the GamePad was designed for? Hey Mojang and 4J, get on that BEFORE the NX comes out.
Re: Darksiders is Coming to Wii U
Re: Rain Games On Teslagrad's Success and World to the West
STILL waiting for the North American physical release. I even asked the creator about it here on Nintendo Life and was told that it was still coming. I have passed on multiple eShop sales due to the promised physical release (which I was willing to pay retail price for) and I'm honestly getting to the point where I'll pass altogether (or maybe I'll get it on a Humble Bundle for a hefty discount). I am happy for the developers that it was successful though, great job guys.
Re: Even If It’s Not Perfect, It’s Better Than Nothing, Says Mighty No. 9 Creator Keiji Inafune
Re: Xenoblade Studio Monolith Soft Is Helping Make Zelda: Breath Of The Wild
Since Xenoblade Chronicles X is not only one of my favorite Wii U games but also one of my favorite RPG's of all time, my anticipate for Breath of the Wild (which was already through the roof) just shot through the stratosphere with this news. I've often referred to XCX as "Exploration Porn" to my friends (one of my favorite aspects of the game) and I had a sneaking suspicion that the new Zelda was getting some help from the XCX team when I saw the scale and scope of the game at E3. Honestly could not be happier at this news.
Re: Round Up: First Mighty No. 9 Reviews Suggest The Wait Hasn't Been Worth It
This is one of those occasions where I'm going to give the game the benefit of the doubt and trust my instinct.
Re: E3 2016: Hideki Kamiya Has "Spent A Lot Of Time" Thinking About Bayonetta 3
Re: The Falco amiibo Unlocks a Special Black Arwing in Star Fox Zero
Interesting and reminds me of Ganondorf Amiibo on Twilight Princess HD but I was hoping my friends idea of Falco unlocking the N64 Arwing and N64 Level Music would be true since that would have fit with what Fox unlocked.
Re: Video: Check Out Super Smash Bros. Melee Running Through a GameCube HDMI Mod
Re: Minecraft: Wii U Edition to Get Update 1.8.8 in 2016, Out Now on Sony and Microsoft Systems
Re: Minecraft: Wii U Edition to Get Update 1.8.8 in 2016, Out Now on Sony and Microsoft Systems
Re: Minecraft: Wii U Edition to Get Update 1.8.8 in 2016, Out Now on Sony and Microsoft Systems
Re: Minecraft: Wii U Edition to Get Update 1.8.8 in 2016, Out Now on Sony and Microsoft Systems
A major third party title for a Nintendo console. Hmmmm, Let's see.
Re: Sales for Dementium Remastered Have Been Much Lower Than Expected
Re: Digital Foundry Gives Xenoblade Chronicles X a Thumbs Up
@liveswired I agree that the PS4 is more powerful technically but as you pointed out, that doesn't matter if the games are chock full of bugs, glitches, framerate issues, screen tearing and numerous other problems which have to be patched or DLC'd into a working/complete state.
Re: Digital Foundry Gives Xenoblade Chronicles X a Thumbs Up
And this is one of the reasons why third party's don't like to put stuff on Nintendo consoles, they can't be lazy the way they are on Sony and Microsoft and get away with it.
Re: Review: Rodea the Sky Soldier (3DS)
@ReshiramZekrom No hesitation, get the Wii U version for the Wii copy. That is the uncontested "real" version of the game. Better graphics, much better gameplay, 4 player multiplayer, actual bonus levels, etc. Avoid the 3DS version unless that is your ONLY option and even then, buy/borrow a Wii for the Wii version. As I've said before, if ANYONE is interested in the game, get the Wii version above all other versions!
Re: Review: Rodea the Sky Soldier (3DS)
Yes, it will be in a Wii U case with a center disc holder for the separate Wii version (similar to the Bayonetta 2 case that has Bayonetta 1). As a nice bonus, there is a Wii instruction book and the cover art is dual sided. 1 side is Wii U version and the other is Wii version so you can copy and put everything in separate Wii case. I did this and it looks nice in my Wii collection.
Re: Review: Rodea the Sky Soldier (3DS)
Re: Review: Rodea the Sky Soldier (Wii U)
Re: Video: New Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water Trailer Is Not For The Faint-Hearted
Re: First Impressions: Taking A Shot At Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water
I'm with everyone here who wants a physical release in North America and I'm gonna test NOA's ability to listen to the fans which they claim to do. This is supposedly why we are even getting Devil's Third. I found the petition to get a physical release and it states that calling Nintendo directly and requesting a disc release will have the greatest impact. I will be doing this and I recommend everyone here who wants a disc release do the same. If you're with me on this, let's also share our results here to see how Nintendo responds.

Re: First Impressions: Taking A Shot At Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water
Re: First Impressions: Taking A Shot At Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water
@james_mueller Not a problem, I have read quite a few articles that mentioned it, this being one:
http://www.engadget.com/2012/06/22/report-nintendo-now-co-owns-fatal-frame-ip/
While Tecmo Koei may own the Trademark for Project Zero, Nintendo co-owns all copyrights for the series with Tecmo Koei.
Any way you slice it, the series is clearly Nintendo exclusive going forward and only adds to the frustration that they don't leverage this fact outside Japan. My recommendation for fans who want a physical release is to follow this petition info and call Nintendo directly to voice your desire for a disc version:
https://www.change.org/p/nintendo-gamestop-fatal-frame-maiden-of-black-water-for-wii-u-physical-release?recruiter=45504776&utm_source=share_petition&utm_medium=copylink
If they get enough people calling in, they may work something out.
Re: First Impressions: Taking A Shot At Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water
Re: First Impressions: Taking A Shot At Fatal Frame: Maiden Of Black Water
Re: Zombi Reveal Trailer Suggests That Wii U Gamers Need Not Be Too Jealous
Re: Tengami Passes Nyamyam's Sales Targets on the Wii U eShop
It would have sold more on Wii U had they:
1. Released it close to if not simultaneously as the iPad version
2. Charged the same price (double the price for no reason or extra content is quite ridiculous)
Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's E3 Digital Event?
