Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water (known as Fatal Frame in North America) launches in Europe on October 30th, and Nintendo has just exclusively given us an early look at a fresh trailer which not only divulges a little more of the story, but also shows how the Wii U GamePad is used to enrich the famous photo-snapping gameplay of the series.
As you can see from the footage, the pad has to be rotated in order to bag the "perfect" ghost shot. This functionality goes a long way to explaining why the game is exclusive to Nintendo's console.
A limited edition retail version - which includes an artbook, photos and other goodies - will be exclusive to GAME on UK high streets, but can be ordered via the official Nintendo online store.
If you're still unsure about the game, then you'll be pleased to learn that a trial version is hitting the Wii U eShop on the day of release. This is free to download and grants access to the prologue and the first two chapters.
The game arrives in North America a little earlier, on October 22nd. It's exclusive to the Wii U eShop in that region.

My friend he really wants this game, he Pre-order I think from the dreaded GAME. Well I 'll see him tomorrow and mention this post
Google sucks
Wow, looks pretty cool actually. I will have to delete stuff if I wanna use the free trial which is a lot of hassle. Nice game for Halloween
"Can be ordered via the official Nintendo online store." Good luck with that; they sold out in two days, back in August.
Too bad the NoA team doesn't have a limited release for a physical edition. NoA should close and let NoE cover our region since they seem to have better customer relations.
Is NA getting the demo/beta/trial/shareware whatever? Is NA pricing it like DL only $20 or retail $60 or mid ground $40. Wow, just realized this is a big title out next Thursday, has it been given the pre-download treatment like Yoshi. Man now I have to go check, I'll be back.
OK, free-to-start (though I still prefer the term shareware back from my Doom days) 9,964.8GB, don't see an option to pre-download, which makes sense as its free and they can't get your money ahead of time, and after the FtS the rest is DLC but no price, b/c when you click on DLC it says none is available.
One thing FtS does have over a demo or trial, you can just continue where you left ofg, so you aren't replaying the demo over again when you get to that part of the game.
Would be nice if they gave a cost though. And if you actually have to download more than the almost 10GB or if it's just an unlock key. I'd bet key. Well maybe in this week's update after the Yoshi pre-loads are done.
Oh, one last thing, it is rated M on the eShop, not sure if that would be an issue for anyone on here.
So glad they kept the Japanese voiceover in it. I'll decide if I buy it after trying out the demo. Annoyed that there isn't a normal physical version of the game.
@Harmonia
yeah man,i pre ordered the limited edition but to be honest i dont care about all the stuff included,i just want the game.
I want this game! Love the Fatal Frame series
Oh NOA how I hate thee most of the time, especially now. I've been wanting this game since it came out in Japan, so finally we get a digital only version, ugh!
@RoomB31
I agree, but hey, let's look at the silver lining here. At least we're getting it.
@MoonKnight7 It just shows that NOA has zero faith in either the game or the genre on the Wii U, not only is it digital only, but the first chapter is free.
It's just sad a disappointing that NOA cannot see how starved we are for different genres in the retail scene. This game while niche I think holds it's own waaay better than Devil's Third (which is fine that we get a mediocre 3rd person action shooter), and yet...
Looks pretty good. I don't like soiling myself too often though.
I recently completed Crimson Butterfly. The second installment in the series. Great game with an intriguing story. Definitely getting this one.
Nice to see they dubbed the game. Sucks that again NA is missing the limited edition
@Harmonia
Same. Not bothered about the extra gumph, just want the game on a disc. The only things I tend to care about in LEs are soundtracks and statues, and this has neither. Steelbooks are kinda nice I guess, but I don't tend to use them because they look odd on a shelf.
Still want a physical copy NoA. Why do they feel the need to frustrate people?
Nice tits! 👍
I pre ordered!😊
I'm with everyone here who wants a physical release in North America and I'm gonna test NOA's ability to listen to the fans which they claim to do. This is supposedly why we are even getting Devil's Third. I found the petition to get a physical release and it states that calling Nintendo directly and requesting a disc release will have the greatest impact. I will be doing this and I recommend everyone here who wants a disc release do the same. If you're with me on this, let's also share our results here to see how Nintendo responds.
Here is the number:
NOA Customer Support 1-800-255-3700, Ext. 5, then 3
Here is the Petition website:
https://www.change.org/p/nintendo-gamestop-fatal-frame-maiden-of-black-water-for-wii-u-physical-release
This is not my petition, I am just a passionate fan of both Nintendo and the Fatal Frame series. Let's see if the NintendoLife community can make this happen.
Pre-ordered this from the Nintendo Store as soon as it went up in August, cannot wait for this game!
@TreonsRealm As much as I'd personally love to see the game get a physical release, I'm not particularly fond of the idea of it being a GameStop exclusive, given what happened when they exclusively sold Xenoblade...
@VIIIAxel As the petition states, GameStop exclusive is only one of the options. I'm sure that much like Xenoblade, Nintendo would also carry on their online store. There is also the option of XSEED publishing the title like with Last Story and Pandora's Tower or even Nintendo releasing it exclusively on their own online store (which has become quite robust over the last year). Regardless, the focus should be for a physical release and then supporting said physical release by actually buying it. I don't care for GameStop myself but if that would allow for a physical release, I'll bite the bullet to support the Fatal Frame series and Nintendo.
@RoomB31
Yes, I agree. There is a complete lack of faith in the game. While I agree that Nintendo should indulge on this for having a good, mature game in it's hands, the series has never sold particularly well. It's just the nature of the beast for the horror genre.
If I recall correctly, it debuted in Japan around 30K. A rather sad figure, when you take into account that most games drop by 60-70% after launch in the following weeks. I agree that NOA should welcome this game with open arms, but I also see the 'lack of faith.' This game was never going to fly off the shelves.
Now about Devil's Third... Well, yes, I don't find it very fair that that game gets better treatment than Fatal Frame, but here we are. All I can say to that is, well, life just isn't fair sometimes. I guess it all comes down to weighing a shooter vs a horror game. One has a broader audience than the other.
At least the game made it here. I still believe that people just need to buy it regardless if they want to see the series live on in NA. I feel that if it does sell reasonably well on the eshop, the next time we get a fatal frame, it might, might, get a retail release.
I'm with you though, I would have preferred a physical disc for this one. If I was in charge at Nintendo, I would have tried to push this game as much as possible, especially since the Holiday lineup is looking as weak as it is.
This game is just embarrassing. Maybe I would buy if the protagonist was better dressed, and the game wasn't "soft" torture-porn.
That terrible feeling you get in your stomach, eyes and spine when you've been through a room 57 times and you think it's clear but then suddenly something swoops down on you
Fatal Frame > Project Zero
Europe always gets stuck with the sucky names.
This is my most anticipated game since 2014! Seriously.
That trailer is getting me excited for it. I'm so glad I've preordered it now
I think this trailer is pretty much one of the old Japanese trailers, though with English voice acting this time, which it's nice to know what the protagonist sounds like in English. An amusing part about the trailer for me is that I found the part where they were showing the Wii U gamepad and it's gameplay usage the creepiest; it's amazing what the right music can do to a scene.
As I've said many a time before, I'm looking forward to trying this series out with this particular entry. I have my physical copy pre-ordered, and look forward to it arriving on the 30th October.
@abbyhitter Funny thing about that, as Project Zero is closer to what the series is called in Japan, where it is known as Zero (at least according to Wikipedia). I still would say though that Fatal Frame does actually seem like a better name for the series.
This looks awesome cant wait, would really love if Nintendo makes the 2 Wii version of Fatal Frame/Project Zero available on the Wii U VC too drum up more interest and hype of this franchise for fans and new comers.
@Moon i just buy the whole thing
A series that has always intrigued me. Unfortunately, I live in NA, so I may have to bend my rule with retail-only full price titles.
...If I like playing the FtS version, of course.
@RoomB31 It's a buisness, most of their decisions are based on money. If this game does well digitally, I can guarantee the next will have a physical release here.
Looks nice!! The Wii games were good but really grainy graphics let em down!! If they manage to ace the mechanics this could be great!!!
@Kalmaro
Really? a Business??
Sarcasm aside, If Nintendo really cared about money they woundn't have waited sooo long to release it, would have done better at promoting & marketing it, and the console.
SO yes it is a money decision not to release it physically, but only because they waited so long to release it in the first place. The only reason we're getting it now? because gamers we're clamouring for it, also the fact that there release window this holiday had so many holes it looked like swiss cheese.
Sure it did poorly in Japan, but that means nothing. Because of gamers enthusiasm for a game they never played, NOA finally caved and released Xenoblade Chronicles , selling the most copies in north america, which garnered Shulk in Smash, a 3DS port, and a sequel.
the decision to release Fatal Frame digitally just ensures little exposure (no pun intended) and limits sales to those who want/can download a full retail game onto their system. They could have done a limited release like in Europe, but I guess your right, NOA only cares about themselves.
@RoomB31 I don't think I said they care only about themselves.
Anyway, you kinda answered your own question. the first game they did with this had poor sales so note they are being cautious. Could they afford to take more risk? Sure I feel like they could, but I understand them wanting to play it safe and test the waters first.
So the best way to ensue a physical release if you buy up the digital. Not only that, but there's like other decisions going on that we don't know about because we're not there. I hear what your saying though, physical release now would be nice.
