One of the interesting debates around Nintendo Switch has been around whether it'll allow for touch controls in games, and whether there's potential for primarily touch-based games to come to the tablet-like console in the future. One side of the argument has suggested that the 'home gaming system' angle and the dock requirement for TV play would rule out touch in games, restricting that screen primarily to the user interface when on the go, for example.
Well, anyone concerned that touch controls will be ruled out of games can seemingly be put at ease, as official details for Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition have confirmed touchscreen controls when in portable mode, seemingly similar to the usage of the GamePad screen on Wii U.
The official website says that you can "undock your Switch device and use the touch screen to take out enemies, manipulate platforms, cut ropes to clear a path and much more"; gyroscope controls will also be supported. Other Definitive Edition features are that up to four players will be able to jump into multiplayer (which seems to suggest this'll be the case in the main mode), while Kung Foot will be updated with 'new features'. Just like in the original there'll be regular Challenges to take on, too.
Are you excited about Rayman Legends on Nintendo Switch?
With thanks to Benson for the heads up.

Yes! So excited
That's cool, but is there a way to approximate touch controls when playing while docked?
@thesilverbrick Probably the IR port
Already bought the WiiU, PS4 & Bita versions ... will no-doubt but this again haha
Oh cool, finally some touchscreen use.
I'd be more excited if Nintendo announced any sorta transfer plans or even trade-in offers for people who already purchased the game on WiiU physically and now want to upgrade to a Switch copy...
I was kinda hoping for a new Rayman game. Will grab this if there is more content than the WiiU version
So it became the PS4 version when dock but change into the PS Vita version when in portable mode?
We already played the game on wiiU .. and if you have Xbox or ps4/vita we already recived the game for free years ago ( hi Nintendo thanks for the retro free game that last for a month only ) ... why release the game all over again after years for 60$ ? ... why not making all new Rayman or Rayman legends 2 ? I will be glad to buy it
I doubt I'll ever buy it for Switch. It was on sale on the Eshop for £9.99 over the holidays. It's been a while since I played it though, I might play through it again before my Wii U is consigned to the cupboard.
@peeks I'd love a remake of Rayman 2.It's one of my all time favourites.
The Murphy challenges on the Wii U version were a lot of fun with the touch controls, maybe this will be definitive version after all!
@jimi Jesus Christ, you just cannot shut up about the Switch being inferior to the Wii U in every single chance you get. You couldn't use touch controls on the Wii U version anyway if you were playing with anything but the Wii U GamePad. Doesnt that make the Wii U version inferior because you can only use touch controls with one specific control scheme, just like the Nintendo Switch version?
This was one of the best games on Wii U. Too bad I've already conquered it SEVERAL TIMES no need to buy it again but it was off the charts.
Come on DS virtual console...
@OorWullie As great as Rayman 2 is its been released on so many different platforms I cant see it getting updated again, maybe I'll be proven wrong though
So it's the Wii U version minus the asymmetrical feature. It's cool that Switch is getting the game but it sounds like the Wii U version will still be the definitive option. Right now, I'm more interested about what Ubisoft has in store for titles such as Steep and the possible rumored BG&E 2 and Rabbids/Mario RPG if those are even happening.
I can't believe when I FINALLY decide to buy this game for PS4, they choose to release another and better edition. I'm crying.
Nintendo says Wii U was a necessary step to get to where we're at for Switch. But based off the 3rd party offerings for Switch compared to the Wii U launch, I'd like to ask Nintendo "was it worth it?"
When Ubisoft, your biggest supporter on Wii U, offers up the jokes for titles they are providing Switch for launch, me thinks not.
btw ZombiU hands down the best 3rd party Wii U experience.
@gatorboi352 Excuse me, but Sonic & Allstars Racing Transformed says hi.
Great game that everybody's already played.
This was my favourite Wii U game. I really hope for a sequel one day. Regardless, I'm almost definitely going to buy this fingers crossed for more music levels
@jimi Are you joking? Take it out of the dock if you want to play games with touch controls. Simple.
If you're so determined to continue your ridiculous crusade, complain about some actual issues with the system. Unfortunately for you, this isn't an issue, unless you're viciously disappointed that you can't play Rayman on the TV for some reason.
With no 2D Mario game, Rayman might get a shot at the lime light
@gatorboi352
I think the reason for no original Ubi titles at launch has to do with it being the first time Nintendo released a home system before the holidays. By Christmas they might surprise us with something special. Maybe that rumored Rabbids game.
I will get this but I am more hyped for Steep.
I've changed my mind, I want this game. I'd forgotten how GORGEOUS Rayman Origins and Legends were!
and people wondered why they made the touch screen... people lack vision.
Just nit interested. Got messed around on Wii u with this title! Not giving them a penny!
Ubisoft might not be putting much on Switch, but so far so good with what they actually are. Hopefully EA and the like also put a lot of effort into whatever they release. I think that would be a great way to earn goodwill with Nintendo fans, while also having a strong product. Therefore we can't blame them when it doesn't sell anything. Anyway I'm getting this.
I already have this on U but I'll buy it again in Switch. This game is so much fun. Totally worth it!
rayman legéns, oui?
Glad Ubisoft can port an old game to the Switch. Minimal effort, minimal impact.
The entire third party support thus far doesn't look like it's going to improve AT ALL from what the 3rd parties did for Wii-U. Weak ports, no AAA titles (unless you count FIFA) and Nintendo has to pay major developers (like Square/Enix) to get them to make any titles for their platform.
If this is the definitive edition, with extra content not seen in other versions, it would be the closest to making up for being the exact point when things with third-party support on Wii U started going downhill.
@popey1980 I have it on Vita and Wii U.... This might be worth a look....
@IceClimbers uh, wut? You're saying Sonic all stars racing was the best 3rd party game on Wii U?
Hey, this is cool... do I need two Switch consoles to play Murphy levels with other players? Is that even possible? Because Murphy levels played alone aren't nearly as fun.
I'm all for this version and really happy to see the touch controls getting mentioned in not just an app or special cheapo game but something that used to be a major title. But that's not going to give me the fun I had with the Wii U version.
Incidentally, do you all play alone? Hopefully Switch will help everyone with that.
I was hoping for pointer functionality to do that, but I'm not 100% that the Joy-cons can do that. Seems like they could maybe use that IR magic and gyro to pull it off...
@jimi The touchscreen sections are best when you look at the Wii Upad instead of the TV anyways, so... With a capacitative stylus, there's really no downside at all to the NS version in this case. I agree that some titles (like BotW) get the short end of the stick on NS due to lack of experience with the NVIDIA hardware, but Rayman Legends isn't one of them.
I think Rayman Legends is a tad overrated, but still an immensely enjoyable game and I'd be happy to double dip for the right price.
I only played the demo because I got my panties in a wad when they postponed Wii U version and said the hell with this game, but I guess I'm ready to come back around and play the WI U version. Still no plans to pick up Switch until they really really wow me. I do hope the Switch version turns out better than WI U one because the bottom line is everyone can agree the Wii U version was great.
Great game, but it honestly seems like a money grab if there isn't any new content added. If we've already played it on Wii U, why should we shell out another $60 to play it again only to experience portable touch controls?
@popey1980 "Already bought the WiiU, PS4 & Bita versions ... will no-doubt but this again haha"
What's a Bita? Is that like a Vita ripoff? Just messin' with ya. 😜
I really want this. I loved the game for the longest time and I feel like this will be one that will get plenty of time on.
@CircuitWrangler3 haha it's the cheap Chinese knock-off from the market 😂
To be honest, games like this will no-doubt look and play fantastically on Switch, but with most of the comments already saying they have at least one version, it could hurt sales as a lot may wait until the price drops before picking up again.
The best thing about the touch controls was that you could help the other players through the levels. I can't see how this would work with the Switch.
Playing the touch levels alone with the second player controlled by the CPU was a bit boring to be honest.
Its going to take a fair amount of content (porting Origins into would do) to make me double dip here. I sure hope Ubi has appropriate sakes expectations
This is just the same as the wiiu version right?? that i already own. if it is then i have really no clue as to why this is being released. yes its an amazing game.........but its still five years old.
After playing on WiiU & Xbox.. I'm not going to buy the game again. I like the idea behind it but we need NEW games. Not a string of rereleases
@bofis well that's not for Nintendo - that's Ubisoft as they are the developers of the game and also publisher. And when has any publisher or developer given you discounts or free upgrades for a retail title you purchased?
Once again - these guys are programming the game again and adding new features. They are actually spending money and time on this and do deserve some money back for their efforts. Its up to you to decide if that value is worth it.
I don't know why I never bothered to buy this gem but now I'm glad. I have the rayman before this one for vita and its great. Can't wait to play this one.
You can get this for the Vita with a few dollars at the used game bin.
I'd rather keep with the Wii U version..
This really is the definitive version! I would have bought the Steam version long ago if Uplay didn't exist.
When it it releasing?
@rockodoodle I will no doubt buy it again too, it is such a good game whichever version you play!!
