Remember: When you see a trailer at any show or online, there is one rule: No Game, No Hype. If they don’t show actual real-time gameplay and just rely on a pre-rendered cutscene, it’s not worth getting excited about.
I certainly hope the game will turn out enjoyable - KOTOR is one of my favorite games, so I think I’ll find something to enjoy in this game whenever it comes out, regardless of quality. But… No Game, No Hype. Them’s the rules.
Why are people automatically assuming that this is some scheme on Nintendo’s part to keep messing with homebrew/modding 3DS consoles? This is a maintenance period, not a full system update. They can’t really do anything to mess with the system during eShop maintenance. Like, yeah, Nintendo doesn’t like people modding their consoles and have done so in the past, but this really doesn’t seem like that sort of thing. They still provide a way for people to access their eShop purchases even all these years later, even if they don’t host full online services anymore. Stop assuming everything is some diabolical scheme.
I love that LEGO is doing Zelda stuff, but I’d like them to release cheaper sets. LEGO isn’t cheap by any means, but I’d love to see some smaller setpieces, like Link’s house in Kokiri Village, or the Temple of Time pedestal, or a small fairy fountain. Maybe a BOTW/TOTK shrine with a Guardian build or a Zonai construct.
…You’d think that LEGO would be all over doing multiple sets with Zonai constructs, since building your own creations is kind of the main point of TOTK. Maybe Nintendo’s licensing restricts the amount of sets they can do or how big they can be?
Maybe i’m in the minority, here, but maybe if an item takes so long to acquire that someone designed an external device to make it less tedious to obtain, maybe that’s an issue? Maybe it shouldn’t be that friggin’ hard to obtain in the first place? Completing the Pokedex is tough enough. Doing 1,000 battles, which is probably 3x or more the amount that a normal playthrough will take… That’s just Game Freak hating their fanbase.
Once Sega/Atlus starts putting the game on the card, i’ll buy their products. ‘Til then, no sale unless it’s under $20. SD Express cards are expensive, and I’m not paying for key cards until I don’t need to worry about storage.
I had an NES since literally the day I was born - my dad bought one for my mom in 1986 or so, and I played Super Mario Bros. before I could walk. We got rid of it sometime in the late 90s, but I got one in 2004 from Gamestop. The thing barely worked, so in 2008, I got one with a new pin connector. A local store had just opened up that sold retro games, and off I went, buying games like crazy because they were $3-$5 back then. I sold off a lot of them to pay for one of my holy grails, a Game Boy retail kiosk, but I kept my system, a top-loader console that I managed to find at a thrift store, and some cherished games. I slowly re-bought the stuff I actually wanted, got rid of the stuff that I didn’t care about. My main goal was to buy a few of my favorites, and all the black box games. I’m only missing Stack-Up from those, because it’s expensive and entirely not worth it.
Mega Man Star Force was never on the 3DS. Come on. I know that’s a nitpick when it comes to the whole article, but it’s very concerning that a NL correspondent would get something like that wrong.
I’m just gonna assume that yes, Pauline is the same from Mario Odyssey, and her grandma is the original Pauline from the DK games. Pauline is the mayor of NDC in Mario Odyssey, no doubt that her grandmother is one of the famous people that built the city and she got her job via nepotism but wanted to prove herself as her own person, hence why she goes out on her own to achieve her dreams.
For the purposes of this dumb BD head canon, “Jumpman” from Donkey Kong isn’t the same person as Mario. Maybe, like, a distant relative? Cousin? That could be why Mario and Pauline are in-universe friends - they could be distantly related.
Please keep in mind that continuity means absolutely nothing with this franchise because Nintendo has never cared this closely about their in-game canon unless it explicitly matters, and with Mario/DK, nothing really does. Hell, it barely matters to them when it comes to Zelda and we all know how that debate goes. They don’t need to give us an answer, and we don’t need to speculate because the real answer’s always going to be something that isn’t going to sit well with everyone, good or bad.
I utterly despise key cards for all the reasons previously said by other commenters. I also completely do not trust Nintendo to keep their servers active in the long run, so those key cards are definitely going to be paperweights sooner rather than later. Nintendo also never really does great sales. That’s why stuff like Steam works for digital downloads and why I don’t mind it there: you have always had to install PC games to a hard drive, and Steam releases of games regularly go on sale for very, very low prices. You never ever see those sort of sales on the Nintendo eShop. MicroSD express cards are also really expensive, so storage space for digital games is a premium that it simply isn’t on other consoles or formats.
Also, why in the hell would Nintendo do anything to make people mad about finally getting some Virtual Boy support? This should have been a slam dunk, “Hey, we finally are going to make these games available again” announcement. Instead, people are pissed that they have to buy an accessory to even play the games.
I actually think Nintendo is trying to make people hate the Virtual Boy. I think they are sending the message of “This will fail and we’re right to not talk about it, we’ll show you.” with requiring an expensive accessory to even play the games.
Like, I understand that you kind of need the accessory to accurately enjoy the games in the way they’re intended…. but Nintendo really should give people an option to play with just one screen, without the accessory. Emulators have been able to do it forever, and the depth effect isn’t that crazy anyway.
As it stands, I am going to have a hard time with either accessory because VR absolutely kills my brain if I play for more than a few minutes. When I beat Wario Land and Jack Bros on my actual Virrual Boy, I had to take a ton of antacids and sleep for a while after because it hurt too much.
I’m never right with any of my predictions or guesses, so i’m just gonna list my wishlist of stuff that I want to happen in a perfect world of sunshine and kitty cat rainbows.
New F-Zero with online multiplayer
Pokemon Gens 1-3 on the Nintendo Classics apps with Home support
Pokemon Colosseum and XD on the Gamecube app with Home support
This is a release that shouldn’t happen. Zero people asked for a Bubsy compilation. Is it cool to have a compilation of one of the objectively worst series of games in history? Kinda, in an Ed Wood/Plan 9 kinda way. But that’s it. That’s not nearly enough to justify a purchase.
Bravo, Team Cherry. They released a worthy sequel to an excellent game, and didn’t screw their player base on the cost.
I don’t have much sympathy for developers complaining that Silksong’s price is undercutting other games. Seems like a lot of developers need to quit bitching and put their money where their mouth is. Besides, if you’re a game creator, and you’re annoyed that a game like Silksong being priced at $20 will make your game look bad by comparison, maybe you need to take a hard look at what you’re doing and see if you’re actually making something that’s worth the price you feel it should be priced at.
Bravo, Team Cherry. No notes. I wish them all the success that they can get.
Pretty much every Nintendo console launches with a sparse offering. They usually try to have one or two really good launch titles, and let the library grow from there. In that respect, I think that we’re right on course with the Switch 2. Mario Kart World is probably the best choice they could have made for launching the console, as it’s a fantastic game that will probably see additional content released for it in the coming months, maybe even years. It’s going to be one of those games that will probably never leave retail shelves. Donkey Kong Bananza is a really nice game, too.
A lot of people are complaining that we didn’t get a whole slate of first party launch titles, but look at Nintendo’s history - that’s never really been the case after the NES. We got three with the SNES, two with the N64, two with the Gamecube, one with the Wii, barely one with the Wii U, and two with the original Switch. Every console’s library has started sparse and grown from there, so we’ll see if that continues to be true with this generation.
Star Wars: Outlaws was a decent enough game, but I really can’t stand Ubisoft’s open-world style of games. I’d have enjoyed it a lot more if it was something less like that. This is a pass for me, especially since it’s a Game Key Card. No physical card, no purchase.
I get that the game is meant to show off a new/novel control scheme for their new console, and it’s meant to imitate the sport in question in some sense, but for something that is clearly based on wheelchair basketball, a variant of a sport that is meant to allow disabled people to still play a sport that they normally wouldn’t be able to do, you’d think Nintendo would be more accommodating in their controls for people that have coordination issues that prevent them from using the controls in the intended manner. Or just people who don’t have the space to use mouse controls comfortably.
I kind of understand that giving people the option of using different controls defeats the point of the game, but… maybe Nintendo should design a game that plays well and is enjoyable regardless of how you choose to control it.
I’ll admit, I did buy most of the Game Key Card titles at launch. I wanted to get the full experience. I’m not necessarily disappointed, but i’m definitely not buying any more of them. I’ve enjoyed the games a lot, especially since most of them are games that I didn’t experience for one reason or another. But MicroSD Express cards are expensive, and the Switch 2 itself has an inexcusably small amount of onboard storage for a modern console.
I know this is a big ask and basically impossible, but I hope that someday, publishers will just allow people to send in their key card copies of games and get sent ones that actually have the game on them. I would go through the effort to do that. Hell, I hope Nintendo discontinues the option of Game Key Cards in the future completely, and just letting publishers order lesser-capacity full game cards. Tall order, I know.
I actually bought the GBA release of this that Limited Run did. Looks awesome along with my copy of the original game, one of the holy grails that i’m amazed to have in my collection.

Re: Poll: So, Will You Be Checking Out Switch Online's Virtual Boy Service?
I had always wanted a Virtual Boy when I was a kid. I got one as an adult, and eventually owned every US game for the system, even Jack Bros.
Then, my air conditioner broke. Had to sell the VB stuff to pay for a new one.
I’ll gladly buy this. Cheaper than the legal alternative.
