Re: Nintendo Switch Successor Chip Rumours Are Doing The Rounds Again

TSR3

@SwitchForce It looks like OreXda is more of a Samsung Uncle, than a Nintendo Uncle, and they've unintentionally triggered the Switch2 leak alert alarms
Nintendo won't release anything until all the components are ready, and what this leak does hint at is that there's more to T239 than just being an Orin knock-off!

Re: Nintendo Switch Sports Version 1.4.0 Now Live, Here's What's Included

TSR3

I got Switch Sports after Golf was added to it, as that was the sport I was most interested in and loved playing the in Wii Sports and Sports Resort. However I was disappointed it was just the basic 18 holes (not even the mad extra holes from Resort) and while being graphically better they lacked the character of the originals. Switch Sports really needs an extra sport or two

Re: Talking Point: So, When Will Nintendo Announce Its Next Console?

TSR3

@Discostew I agree with almost everything you say, and I voted for 2023 announcement and launch above. But I did hesitate, not just because of the DF rumour (which could well be a Bloomberg style confused interpretation of legitimate info), but also the rumours about T239 not initially hitting its thermal/power consumption targets. If those were true then T239 could be a year or more behind Orin while they redesign and prove a die shrink (which would also increase the sale price of any Switch 2 by quite a bit)

Re: Video: New Switch Hardware Won't Stop Bad Ports

TSR3

@progx You're gonna be disappointed if you're hoping for something in the recent Apple A class range. Think something more like the Tegra Orin NX ball park, and your expectations will have less chances of being dashed

Re: Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 2 Launches On Switch Next Week

TSR3

Wikipedia call it II, and I’d trust them way more than sales or marketing types. And like lots of others I haven’t played this one before despite playing the first one multiple times (I think IV times on the GC, plus just finishing off a run through on the NSW now) so I’m kinda hyped for this release. I may even pay full price 😮

Re: Best Space And Sci-Fi Games On The Nintendo Switch

TSR3

I guess this article works as a companion piece to the flight sim and space shooter list. More to add to my wish list/backlog 😱
I can strongly recommend Starlink, it’s especially fun in Co-op mode with younger family and great value when (frequently) on sale. And Manticore (from the space shooter list) list is a massive blast as well.

Re: Feature: The Saddest Games On Switch - Games To Make You Cry

TSR3

I'd add The First Tree to the list. Most of the game is quite chilled, but the end of the journey is very sad. I thought it was quite affecting, bu my offspring (who beat me to the end of the game) enjoyed playing most of it, but was so upset by the ending they asked for the game to be deleted from our Switch so they wouldn't have to see it in the list and be reminded of it

Re: The Switch Has Now Outsold The 3DS In Japan

TSR3

Can the Switch keep on selling around 4 million units a year for another couple of years in Japan? If so, it could take the crown. If it's still around for more than couple of years (and it probably will be!), then it's still in with a chance of being number one even if sales rates slow down. No wonder the Saudi's decided to want a (5%) slice of the action.

Re: Talking Point: If Breath Of The Wild 2 Launched Alongside New Switch Hardware, Would You Upgrade?

TSR3

@Austrian @RadioHedgeFund I read somewhere else that BoTW wasn't optimised to run on the Switch, it was just natively powerful enough for the port from the WiiU. So 5 years experience with the game engine, plus optimising for the Switch should make a noticeable difference to BoTW. I also doubt Nintendo would be inexperienced enough to show game footage from a future model before it's been announced (which personally I do expect in 2023)

Re: PSA: Nintendo Says Switch Sports Won't Work On The Switch Lite

TSR3

Nintendo's product page says the supported features are
Tabletop mode and TV mode
https://www.nintendo.co.uk/Games/Nintendo-Switch-games/Nintendo-Switch-Sports-2168292.html#gameDetails
https://www.nintendo.com/store/products/nintendo-switch-sports-switch/
That doesn't mean you can't play on the Switch Lite. It'll be awkward perhaps, but I'm sure some YouTuber will post a vid of them doing so come late April

Re: It Looks Like Nvidia Is Abandoning Its $40 Billion Purchase Of British Chip Designer Arm

TSR3

@yuwarite Yes, mobile is also a massive market that Nvidia have found little success in, excepting Nintendo's Switch of course. Nvidia were very clear they weren't going to force the rest of the mobile industry to buy Tegra instead of just Arm (but I'm sure they would if they thought they could get away with it!)

I'd never thought of Nintendo getting a subsidy from Nvidia beyond a volume discount. Interesting idea, but I would expect the power of any 'Switch 2' to be most dependant on what model of Tegra will be current at the time that Nintendo want to produce a new model.

Re: It Looks Like Nvidia Is Abandoning Its $40 Billion Purchase Of British Chip Designer Arm

TSR3

@Pod Most of the stock in the IPO is probably going to go to major players (Apple, Google, Microsoft, Samsung, etc), and other big tech investors/VCs first, before any trickles down to the actual public on the street.

This won't make any difference to Nintendo. Nvidia's plans for the next Tegra SoCs already included existing Arm CPU designs. And the benefit to Nvidia getting Arm would have been around high performance computing for big businesses and academia anyway, with little impact on mobile.

Re: Analyst Predicts 2024 Release Date For Next-Gen Nintendo Switch Successor

TSR3

Looking at the original gamesindustry.biz article, it seems like this guys predictions for 2021 were right for any generally trending technology, but not right for anything regarding specific companies or products/services . So based on past performance I'd say the forecast of a next-gen console in late 2024 is also likely to not be right.

Re: Global Chip Shortages And Supply Issues To Continue Into 2023, Says Intel Boss

TSR3

@HedgehogEngine Interesting what you say about 28nm as one of the chip shortages is in that and larger nodes. The other one is at the 7nm and smaller end where TSMC have had a monopoly so far. However TSMC still produce those older sizes as well (https://www.tsmc.com/english/dedicatedFoundry/technology/logic). There was a rumour earlier this year about Nvidia closing down 16nm production. The rumour came out in the middle of the Switch Pro hype, and was never substantiated (or even repeated by other sources AFAIK). Are you thinking of that story when you say 'TSMC closes their 16nm line(s)'?

Re: Global Chip Shortages And Supply Issues To Continue Into 2023, Says Intel Boss

TSR3

@SwitchForce Yes, Pat Gelsinger has made a habit of playing up the chip shortages several times this year. Some of it will be to distract from Intel's problems of the last 5 years. I'm not aware of any of semiconductor manufacturer predicting problems past the end of 2022 yet.
However there is a counter-narrative. Intel are due to launch their own GPU cards soon. In order to compete with AMD and Nvidia, Intel are actually getting TSMC to produce their designs for them! That means Intel probably do have an idea how hard it is to get 5nm and 3nm capacity from TSMC in the next year or so.
