@Ventilator I reckon Nintendo with stick with Nvidia. ARM as a platform is going great guns at the moment with Apple's M1 beating Intel PCs and cloud vendors deploying massively muti-core ARM CPUS for servers
@pepepopo the rumours are that a near future revision of the switch will run a form of DLSS that will support upscaling to 4K TVs. So yeah, the games will still run at 1080p (or less), but Nvidia's funky AI will help them look half way decent on a giant screen. I haven't heard any rumours yet about the Switch becoming a media streaming box tho'?
@lokozar there's two points against 1080p displays for the switch in handheld (or tabletop) mode: 1) Displaying in game text/UI elements (this is already a problem for some games in 720p) 2) Price. As well as tech and games, consoles are also defined for potential consumers by their price. If you read through the Bloomberg article, which was the original source for the OLED display story, you'll see their analysis that Nintendo would have got a good price from Samsung as well as a reliable supply (and supply side issues are big in tech at the moment)
I wonder if the slightly larger screen and OLED would make a difference to the Tabletop experience? I tried a few games tabletop, but it just didn’t work for those with a lot of text on screen (e.g, Diablo)
I wouldn't be surprised if Nintendo keep the handheld screen at 720p. The OLED is a nice interim upgrade. The USP of Switch Pro/1.5 has to be upscaling to 4K for people with new TVs. They have to have a foothold in this market, otherwise it'll be like the Wii not supporting HD in the early noughties all over again.
So, you don't need to worry about getting a new switch until you get a new TV (unless you already have one of course).
@Baobab I think you may have made an assumption about a new type of chip meaning no more Tegra. Xavier is the latest Tegra SOC, and supports DLSS (which uses seperate Tensor cores to the main GPU and CPU). It's been out for a couple of years now, which could make it a good fit for Nintendo's withered technology philosophy
@CupidStunt My guess is that one reason 1080p may be an issue in handheld is due to readability of text. Some games already have hard to read text at 720p. Keeping the same resolution but increasing screen size and quality could relieve the readability issues in handheld.

@Socar Mariko was the codename for the revised Tegra X1 - the one that went into the Lite, and them the lightly revised Switch.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo To Reveal New Switch Model With Samsung OLED Display And 4K Support
I wonder if there'd be a follow on update to the Switch Lite using OLED screens? I'd love a clamshell!
