Great that there’s an update, but I was hoping for more than just 4 more Pokémon. My offspring has caught all Gen 1 twice over now, and has reverted back to eating the toothpaste!
"... build a 'uniquely Nintendo service infrastructure'" sounds like they won't be tying up with Microsofts cloud, like Sony have and Sega are doing. To be honest I'd rather Nintendo did tie up with someone else (maybe Amazon?) as they don't seem to have a strong history with networking
@WeltraumDreamer I'm not sure if Audi is a good comparison to Nintendo. Most of the automative industry have had serious problems with silicon components in the last 18 months because of the way they (mis)handled supplier management (Toyota being the exception). However this holiday season will be a test, with success going to the companies that can actual get their products in stock. So far Nintendo seem to have managed their supply chains better than Sony or Microsoft. Nintendo could win this season by default. Of course 2022 will be another story, but at least Nintendo aren't going the way of Sega in the '90's.
I voted for ‘Eventually’, but I actually pre-ordered it. I’m looking forward to it as I’ve never played Mario Party before,, but it won’t be played until Xmas, as it’s a gift from Santa for my offspring. She’s been hyped for it since seeing the Treehouse for it. It looks like it’ll be a good family game for the holidays.
Shame, as it was going to go on my Xmas list for Santa
Still, the new date possibly makes it a birthday list item
And I'd much rather receive it ready than rushed
Not paying double when I don't play Animal Crossing and I already have the Sega MegaDrive collection (which I don't touch too often TBH). I'll join the standard NSO for now and wait to see if Nintendo can add more value to the expansion pack in the future
@HammerGalladeBro I bought a new copy recently on eBay recently for ~£35, and there seemed to be stick in other online retailers and Amazon.
Late getting it I know, but my offspring has recently got into Mario having previously just been obsessed with Pokémon. So I’m kinda relieved I’m not unintentionally double dipping on Mario64 (as well as Galaxy, which I have on Wii)
@NoTinderLife "Calcio has no gamecard slot and no battery". That sounds more like a prototype or early dev kit than anything that will get released to the wild.
@skywake I'd love to agree with you that it's a smoking gun, BUT unless you expect the OG Switch to still be on the market in 2 years time I'd suggest that the simple available component theory is still the strongest explanation here. Occam's Razor and all that, you know
I still have my original GBA AW2 cart, but I lost my Copy of AV1 sometime ago. So I can’t wait to play the first one agin on the Switch, but I’ll have to wait for Xmas. And then it’ll have to compete with Metroid Dread (another Xmas wish). Too many good games coming out at end of this year!
@westman98 This patent is interesting 'news'. Up until this summer, DLSS was Windows only (https://developer.nvidia.com/blog/nvidia-dlss-sdk-now-available-for-all-developers-with-linux-support-unreal-engine-5-plugin-and-new-customizable-options/). This suggests to me that were testing upscaling themselves with Nvidia's Xavier SoCs (which do have Tensor cores) back in 2019-2020. And they wrote their own equivalent of DLSS in the absence of non-windows drivers from Nvidia.
Maybe there is substance to the idea that OLED model is the plan B device, when component shortages kicked in and scuppered the Plan A 'Switch Pro'!
I wonder if Nintendo will stick with their own tech, or use DLSS for the Switch2 (or whatever it's called, probably not using the name Switch at all)?
@Madao Nintendo’s denial also implies there won’t be an upgrade to the current Switch, quote “… Nintendo Switch with 4K support”. Kinda leaves them covered for a 4K device which isn’t the “Switch”
@skywake Nintendo’s rapid rebuttal surprised me as well. Interestingly Bloomberg are also quoting Zynga as officially denying they have any Nintendo 4K dev kit as well. I reckon @EriXz could be right about Furakawa’s screams! 😀
Looking forward to seeing what this is like on the Switch. I always wanted to play this but never had an Xbox. Eventually got it on a tablet, but that was no way to play it.
No predictions for StarFox then?! I totally dig the idea of extra content for Ring Fit tho’. And being wildly random I’d vote for a something Microsoft related as well. It is now ‘Fall’ after all
I’ve got mixed feelings about this. My offspring would be super excited, but I just can’t get into the games myself. I don’t understand why Kirby‘s so highly rated?
@Williamfuchs420 I like the idea of a Switch Lite (OLED model) as well. I guess the precedent for that would be the 2DS XL. I wonder if an upgraded Lite would get launched after any Switch 2 came out as well?
The information looks legit, even if the content could just be placeholders or even wishful thinking by nvidia’s devs. I’m surprised NVIDIA ignored a responsible disclosure. Maybe as the source wasn’t from the security community they decided to ignore it? I’m sure Nintendo will want to ask why Dolphin and Wii games were hosted on Nvidia’s cloud. And I’m sure there’ll be a few linkin updates from former NVIDIA developers later this week!
As there's no matching price cut for the Lite, I'm assuming this is a stock clearance exercise, and the OG model will become unavailable sometime early next year. As for the EU getting a bigger price cut than the UK, I'm guessing that demand is still higher for the Switch in the UK than the EU.
Thanks for the hardware based reporting NL. A Digital Foundry analysis focussed on the Switch certainly counts as a newsworthy item. I've been waiting for something like this for a while. I was wondering how well DLSS might work on a mobile SoC. I was wondering if 1440p might end up being be the target, following the Xbox series S example. Maybe have additional 4k upscaling in the dock to take that 1440p output up to 4K? I guess we'll find out for real in 2-3 years!
@MaikonCSGarcia Are you trolling me?! I wrote I was 'kinda hoping' for Halo to make it over. No logical analysis there, just forlorn feelings
The logical/analytical part of my comment was just noting Phil's doubling down Game Pass or nothing. He's said this before, but this quote explicitely included 'individual games'. So that's the best fact on the ground for now, no more need to speculate or second guess (it was fun while it lasted )
I think Phil Spencer's also ruled out porting individual games (e.g. Halo) to other platforms as well:
"people usually ask me about releasing one individual game or another. And what I say is I want the full Xbox experience ..."
Which is a shame, I was kinda hoping for at least original Halo trilogy to make it over to the Switch.
The UK price of the Lite at £199 is too high. It should’ve have been more like £179 to start with (it just launched at a bad time for the exchange rate and the price hasn’t been ‘corrected’). So yeah, I think a price drop is justified, at least in the UK. I doubt it will happen though, they’ll just keep it where it is as hedge against inflation for now.
I can see a TV dockable (HD only) version of the Lite appearing in 2-3 years, as a final Switch 1 version, before Switch 2 comes out (kinda like the 2DS XL came out the same year as the Switch)
I was still playing this until a few months ago when my disc started glitching (and then the Wii itself stopped working, so maybe it was a symptom). My offspring especially loved the Swordplay game. So it'd be great to see a port or remake, but what I would really love is a proper sequel developed for the Switch. That way maybe they could support Lite users as well?
Interesting what was said about potential sales offered for the older models. A few years ago Nintendo rarely discounted their own games, now e-shop sales seem to be regular (once, twice a year, depending on title). I guess it depends how quickly they phase out the old models (if they do?)
I totally fit into a non-buyer of the OLED model, as @Zuljaras wrote right at the top
I’ll be saving my money for Metroid Dread and Advance Wars 1+2 instead. Plus whatever’s good in the post holiday sales. Oh, and I have to buy two Pokémon games for my offspring!
@UltimateOtaku91 as well as Switch Dockable vs Lite breakdown, it'd be good to see a breakdown of the Xbox and Playstation versions. I'd heard the Xbox series S isn't hit by shortages, and breaks even as well
There's possibly an element of Nintendo covering themselves for future inflation. I think the traditional price cuts over time for tech is going to disappear a couple of years
Re the Nvidia ceasing production at the end of this year rumour . It was just a sole rumour, and Nvidia never announced it. Considering there is a new SKU of the Switch which is still using the Tegra X1+ 'Mariko' SoC, we should now consider that this particular rumour is now disproved.
@Slowdive I reckon this could make an Orin upgrade more likely, as I don't think Orin will be ready until 2022 at the earliest. But we may have to wait another year plus for a really upgraded Switch,
@Slowdive I know I was sceptical about the more powerful/'Pro' end rumours, but I'm surprised as well. It does feel more of an attempt to fix a couple of the design misses from 2017, and maybe improve the Switch's reputation as Nintendo's most plasticky product
@Slowdive Ok, I'll take your bait I'll be surprised if the "Switch Pro" comes with an Orin based SoC, because ... 1) It's very new technology (entering production next year), possibly too new for Nintendo 2) While 15W is a match for docked mode, it's too high for handheld mode (need to get down to 10W for that) 3) Samsung 8nm node is already utilised for Nvidia's 3000 series GPUs for the PC market.
I still think Xavier is more likely at the moment as it's more established technology (entering production 2019), with 15W and 10W models available from last year. Those models could be the basis of prototypes and early (heavily NDA'd) dev kits that are supposedly already out there. Finally Xavier is produced in fabs on 12nm node, which at the moment is kinda in the sweet spot between the high demand higher nodes, and the shortage struck lower nodes.
I'd be looking at Orin, or Atlan, to be used in a Switch 2.
@Dethmunk I enjoyed Starlink too. I wonder if the Starlink team will appear as guest characters in the rumoured Star Fox racing game?
As for Star Fox Zero, I never got the Wii U, so in a way I'd love to see it ported. But I think a new free flying space game, with multiplay online action would be a better investment of Nintendo's time and money
