So many great tantalising glimpse’s and reveals in the last trailer!!
I’m just amazed that some people had convinced themselves that the team who made BOTW and spent 6 years on this were going to produce something akin to DLC!
New characters look really interesting and I have a faint hope that Zelda will be playable at some point - just from the tone of her bits and the way they’re setting this up - but probably not.
US version all day for me. Japanese version looks busy, needy, cobbled together and totally compromised by being forced into portrait. Also - what’s with the swimming pool water background for a game all about racing on open water waves!?!?
US/UK cover image is so elegantly composed, the way the riders fan out in a curve as they crest the wave and the feeling of them negotiating the water and the weight of the jet skis. It screams wave race. Love the sense of space and big open sky too - summer good times!
Fair enough both US + UK design choices for getting the additional info and logos onto / into the image are clunky. But the overall feel of the image is WAY better and that wins it in this case for me.
Also agree with @slowpokemon who said the writer shouldn’t put a steer on the article - especially in this case - predicting the result. Especially when they’re so wrong in their choices (wink emoji).
Anyone not getting why this is crappy from EA - just put it in context. They’re one of the biggest, richest, most influential, most mainstream, most powerful forces in modern gaming - and they’re publishing statements that crap on a whole huge section of gaming! It’s not a genre that they’re just not interested in - it’s a whole TYPE of game that happen to be less profitable for them, but loved by so many people. Bafflingly idiotic and cynical statement from them and probably an insight into a wider strategy for them as a corporation - in my opinion. They’re absolutely getting what they deserve in my opinion. Screw you EA.
Really good range of stuff I thought. Monkey Island a personal highlight and will defo play Portal as I was always interested in that from the buzz around it. Really glad for Persona fans too.
Plenty in there that deserved the spotlight but would have been swamped in a big direct with 1st party stuff - especially if they’re planning to show Zelda or something else big.
The way things are now with a big summer show just not being a thing any more - it’s just not worth chucking everything out in one big splurge. This way they can do a 1st party direct in a few weeks - a month and it’ll share out the glory and get way more attention for the Switch as a system. No one gives a s*~t about ‘winning’ E3 anymore - do they? (Nintendon’t)
Seems like Nintendo are getting into the idea of smaller more spaced out announcements - makes sense in relation to news cycles when it’s going straight to social media instead of a show at a live event.
Sure they’re saving some really good 1st party stuff for last - don’t want 3rd parties eating their lunch!
@Dezzy Progressive is what people do and have done since the beginning of humanity. It’s just a normal human activity to question and explore and want to share it.
Anyway, you reminded me to go read Polygon coz I like that site too. Cheers.
Enjoyed the article a lot. Agree with the criticism of women’s representation in games. More equality and representation all round please game devs.
I get why peeps on here aren't bothered about finding out about the main game, but do you think Nintendo are going to ignore the 50+ million people who've never played this and don't even know the WiiU was a full console and not and add on?
As for Directs, what's better for getting the message out + engaging the general public on social media - a 40 minute direct with all the announcements made one day or lots of 1-3 min trailers / snippets peppered throughout the year?
Sure, the long time fans want directs because it's really hype and we can look forward to it, but the wider public don't follow the gaming news, they just want fun games to play on their cool system and they get most of their news and culture alerts from social media.
They have the Wii / WiiU ones in the UK. Hopefully we’ll get the Switch ones too.
It would probably introduce a ton of kids/families to Nintendo’s own games too: Because although a load of kids have Switches, lots of them only play FIFA, Fortnite, Minecraft + Rocket league. Mario Kart seems like the only one that has really broken through in my experience (I work on a Children’s Ward). But that’s a lot down to the UK’s love of driving games I think.
You can forget about Zelda - I get weird looks when I encourage them to try it (few exceptions over the years but not many). 😂 Even Smash is a rare one to find someone with knowledge of - never mind enjoy playing it!?!?
Something curious about the UK - it just hasn’t seemed to embrace the whole of Nintendo. 🤷♂️
But looking at the bigger picture: UK overseas territory occupies the top 3 (and has 4 in the top 10) of the worst offending countries for tax havens according to the Tax Justice Network.
I’m really disappointed in NL with this. Amazon pays a disgustingly low amount of tax to the British government for incredible amount of business it does here.
Especially considering the economy and UK retail is taking such a battering due to COVID - as a UK based site I’d expect better.
I think you should re-consider this partnership honestly.
Plus, other sites are offering better deals - these are just off-load bundles with little or no savings - just shop around.
Since when did fans become share holders or editors (in the literary sense)?
It baffles me to here people saying they should do this or that and show ‘us’ blah blah blah.
They will make the game as they see fit, to the best of their ability. It will be released and people can buy it if they want to play it.
Creators don’t want to be hassled and be showing their audience unready stuff that isn’t going to be representative of the finished product - same for any creative endeavour.
Fans can be a great asset to a company, but not when mania and the thirst for new stuff becomes a distraction. Fans getting into the mindset of ‘we make you, we pay your wages, do what we want’ is bull - if they make great stuff, people will buy it.
@Enigk Yup, totally agree. I always felt cruel after i’d been winning at Monopoly and trying to persuade others to continue so I could slowly and inevitably crush them. And always felt super bored being on the other side of it - feels like a game for sadists.
This looks like something that was supposed to come out after the usual E3 Direct. Maybe Nintendo just said go ahead, don’t wait for us - or it’s just Hasbro doing what they need to do. The image of all the Marios does seem to add credence to the remaster rumours.
The Disney comparison can be made when you look at the two companies as both creating and nurturing a wide catalogue of beloved characters and IP’s that transcend generations. Disney may have pissed a lot of people off in more recent times but when you look at what’s on Disney+ it’s an incredible collection of classic content stretching back 80 years or so. Like them or not they elevated and transformed the medium of animation and the concept of family entertainment.
If Nintendo got their act together with their NSO service it would be a similar type of thing in regards to significance to games culture.
Maybe the guy knows something - probably not - but I think he’s just talking about the significance and quality that Nintendo have in their stable, the pedigree of them as a company to make original work and the potential for new forms of entertainment that they could develop.
My kids just got Mario Galaxy 1 for Christmas from their cousin (playing on Wii U) and it was so fun watching them pick it up for the first time (mine too). My 4 year old was wall jumping + back flipping about the hub level after about 5 minutes - they both loved it!
I've not played either (missed most of the last decades games) so I have a lot of catching up to do - which should be fun by the sound of it!
My pick is Breath of the Wild - One of the only recent games I've played but boy is it amazing - lots of chat around the dinner table about that one!
I'm not replying to anyone specifically here so not looking for an argument - just throwing my 2 pennies in to the chat:
I really enjoyed TLJ - it made me think differently about the series and it genuinely surprised and delighted me. After TFA I wasn't expecting to be startled but I found those elements quite exhilarating to be honest.
Sure, I think it has flaws but I thought it was a really bold move - and as part of a trilogy I think it's important to have changes of pace and tone.
I thought Luke besting Kylo and the 1st order without having to fight - by achieving some kind of supreme Jedi state - was totally boss and the image of him floating was so memorable and beautiful - and totally in keeping with him as a statesmanlike elder Jedi.
Seeing the ship slice through the other ship was glorious and it illicited numerous shouts and squeals of delight from the kids in the audience (mine included). That's good enough for me to put aside any concerns about continuity with the other movies. My son won't care - he's 7 and although I enjoy the movies as much if not more than him, I understand that his generation is the target audience and always has been. They aren't kids movies - but it's clearly a series that's been conceived to appeal to and inspire young audiences first.
Haven't seen it since but looking forward to re-watching before TRoS to see how the whole trilogy feels one after another.
Making creative, original work to publish is always a risk and infinitely more complex and troubled than expected. It never turns out the way you plan - there are always things you wish you'd thought through better and had more time to work on. Doing that with a Star Wars movie is that times a Galaxy Far Far Away. I admire Rian Johnson for what he tried, the original and exciting stuff he pulled off - and for sticking up for himself and his work.
Can't wait for TRoS - got tickets booked in a massive screen and I'm sure I will enjoy the culmination of a saga I've loved since I was the age my son is now. It's Star Wars!
Getting something when you expect it VS getting a better thing a bit later . . .
What’s better for consumer? What’s better for Nintendo as a company? What’s better for people making the game?
Seems like the second one all three times to me - unless having your expectations of release date fulfilled is more important than the experience of playing it?
BOTW - repeatedly delayed and eventually one of the best games of all time. The more hours you put into that or AC the more the improvement in the experience gives back to you.
This isn’t really a surprise - investors want to see the player base extended and the major selling season (Christmas) taken full advantage of. Delaying Animal Crossing will certainly miss that opportunity to an extent - how much impact long term no-one knows - but investors are predictors and they like feeling secure. They were probably expecting a mega mega holiday season and this just introduced uncertainty.
Meanwhile Nintendo keeps being Nintendo and trusts the methodology that has made it a global mega brand, brought joy to generation after generation and kept developing it’s in house talent.
@oji You beat me to it! I have super fond memories of Super Off Road Racing - something about the way the trucks moved over the ramps felt really satisfying and challenging - loved Wave Race BS for the wave riding mechanics too. We need more dimensions in racing games!
Very happy to see plenty of love for Wave Race! I LOVED Blue Storm for it’s wonderful wave riding mechanics and constantly changing courses. The presentation was great too - they nailed the feel of being around water - feeling connected to nature and kind of chill amidst this competitive race set-up. A total gem in my eyes!
@JayJ That’s what I thought. If it’s older kids, then ok - but far from perfect. Younger kids will be bored, freaked out and occasionally entertained. Worth seeing but anyone thinking this is a good movie for all the family may well be disappointed.
It didn’t land for me or any of the other 6 adults that went. We had 13 kids with us and although they were entertained, they barely talked about it coming out of the cinema or afterwards. That’s a pretty good metric as far as i’m concerned - my older kid was basically channeling the Spiderverse movie for a week after seeing it. I felt bad because i organised the trip.
I felt like it lacked the charm and fun to be a really good family film. Maybe my expectations were off but I assumed it would be fun for a broad range of kids. Felt like it was pitched squarely at tweens to me. Not worried about the simple plot as was thinking about it as a kids film but the tone was all over the place and just not a very enjoyable film to watch. 6/10
I've definitely noticed an upturn in Switch awareness and ownership in the young people I work with recently (in UK). Teenage boys who are classic FIFA lads buying it and loving Mario Kart - and one who bought Smash and introduced it to the rest. They loved it - no surprise there but a definite change from recent times - they still hadn't even heard of Breath of the Wild though!!
The weird thing I saw this weekend away with a bunch of families was two young kids from separate families - both with new Switches - neither owning ANY Nintendo games - not even MarioKart! Just Minecraft, FIFA and Lego games! One parent said they hadn't really got into the Switch that much - No S**t!!
This is Uk - the general culture just isn't very tuned in to the magic of Nintendo games. Nintendo has plenty of work to do to here - persuading kids and educating parents of the special social qualities that their games offer. They and should be trying to get the parents joining in instead of looking at it as vaugly negative 'screen time' for the kids.
I don’t think they’ll do much outside what we already know is coming - concentrating on this half of the year and saving the juicy stuff for E3. I do expect a few surprises though - random hopes and baseless speculation:
Zack and Wiki sequel
Waverace in time for this summer and it’s massive and freakin amazing
Star Fox Racing and it’s super slick and charming with awsome combat and super dynamic changing stages (I like racing games with dynamic stages).
Super Nintendo World theme park building game - best efforts get built for real
Metroid Trilogy HD - full remaster
Nintendoland 2 - In keeping with the really fun multiplayer bits of the first - with people able to play asemetrically with multiple switches.
Zelda Maker & Mario Maker - with new Apple Pencil like stylus - tech baked into all Switches already but kept secret.
Mario-Mation - super cool art and animation game /app using stylus
Nintendo’s take on a flying combat game - like what Splatoon was to Shooters - I’ll leave it to them as their ideas are a bit better than mine.
@gcunit Brilliant - you had me in the edge of my seat! Although I think they’ll save this for E3 - with the addition of the gunship landing in the Nintendo area - right in the middle of an Animal Crossing picknick ground.
Regarding recent point made by N President about the importance of mobile gaming; Maybe we have Nintendo's mobile riches to thank for them being able to scrap a less than satisfactory 'hardcore' project and start all over?
Seems very likely to me that an announcement of a Metroid Trilogy and the next direct would be disrupted by what must have been a fairly major discussion about the future of Metroid 4 that would have been going on for a while.
Much better to keep power dry, deliver the bad (but also maybe good) news about Metroid 4 and then leave on a positive note with a direct - and maybe Metroid Trilogy announcement a week or two later.
The recent Indie direct could have been put together as a little sweeter to fill the gap as people waited for news.
Pretty sure they won’t hurry to show a logo at E3 for a while. Maybe the failed first draft will make for a far superior outcome: WiiU - Switch? Sure there was plenty of potential in it - it takes a gutsy (and rich) studio to scrap and start again because they want it to be much better.
Also what’s the chance this means a direct is coming soon? They wanted to get this out of the way first and then focus on the positives. Who knows, maybe the rumoured trilogy is in there to soften the blow!?
My local supermarket (Sainsburys) has just started stocking Switch stuff - a year and a half after its launch. Still don’t have any signage for it though - if you look down the isle you just see PS & XBOX. UK just not big on Nintendo - no idea why. Lots of young people I work with are getting Switches which is good for the future of Nintendo but they have work to do to raise awareness of their brilliant IP’s in the UK - plenty of the kids haven’t even got Mario or Zelda - maybe Mario Kart , Minecraft and a Lego game! Hopefully their efforts with advertising will change that - UK needs cheering up right now!
Got a WiiU for my kids this Christmas and it's been brilliant! The whole family can play together with the great range of multiplayer games on offer. Games are cheep and the catalogue - while not massive is top quality - and it even plays Wii games so we can access that whole catalogue as well.
I wanted to get my kids into Nintendo early because their pals and cousins started getting PS4's and Xbox's and they were getting into the idea. Watched them all sat playing Forza together on afternoon and thought - they'd be having so much more fun if it was Mario Kart. Turns out I was right. Had a bunch over the other day and we had a great time playing 5 player Nintendoland.
We'll get a Switch eventually - they're already asking about it - but I showed them all the brilliant games we don't have for Wii U and it did the job. My youngest is 3 so I'm not ready to let them have a portable console yet.
The Switch looks amazing but the Wii U is the perfect family console if you have younger kids.
If your ultimate goal is to have as many people as possible interact with your IP then having a single model of dedicated hardware to play those game costing almost £300 is not very smart. Hence this.
I love that Nintendo puts so much effort into making quality, whimsical experiences for younger kids.
Bought my kids a Wii U for Christmas as I wanted a dedicated Sitting Room console we could all enjoy as a family. So far we've had a blast playing Mario Kart, Wii Party U, Lego City. Mario Maker is AMAZING - been teaching my 3 year old how to play Mario by building him kid friendly levels - he LOVES it.
Wanted to introduce my kids to Nintendo before their mates's Xbox's + PS4's got their teeth into them. Sure they'll want to play them when their older - when it's appropriate - but they'll always have their love of Nintendo to remind them that gaming is about having fun!
Many people like the feeling of being 'right' and dislike the feeling of being 'wrong'. Sometimes so much so that they're willing to construct entirely ficticious versions of the world in which to live.
I'm guessing some of the people who hastily built a soap box from which to shout 'PORT' on these and other feeds before knowing anything about the game are falling into this category.
I’m willing to bet that there are a lot of young people who love the Pokemon IP - watch the shows, collect and trade the cards, play Pokemon GO - but have never owned a 3DS or played a core series game.
That would be because for many households cheap tablets have replaced Nintendo handhelds and during the Wii U era Nintendo as a brand has not been on parents radar nearly as much. I can see this example creator in my extended family.
With this in mind, and the recent massive success of the Switch - and their obvious targeting of a younger audience since Christmas (when many young people will have been gifted them). It seems like a pretty great strategy to create a game that is simplified, appealing to a young audience, has an accessory that will be the talk of the playground and focuses on a smaller net of Pokemon.
It will sell them bucket loads of games and Switches, growing the audience significantly and gently and in a fun way introduce them to the concept of what a Pokemon game really is (my son is 6 and he thinks Poken is the Nintendo Pokemon game). Then release a core game that’s had the time to make it what it needs to be and boom - you’ve caught yourselves a huge gaggle of hungry new Pokemon fans to keep the series healthy into the future and ‘pleased’ those wanting the more substantial game (pleased is pretty speculative of course).
@Koudai1979 I'm definitely hoping for something a little weirder - in keeping with Splatoon - it's pretty nuts!
How about a dash of the rubber costumes from those mad as hell baddies in PowerRangers! A sort of clash between live action, messed up prosthetic madness and cutting edge digital effects - with real INK!

Anyone played Civ 6 - could it be fun to play with a young person? I’d heavily discounted - thinking it might be a fun game to play with my son (12).

Re: Nintendo: It Would Be A "Disservice" To "Loyal Fans" To Release Animal Crossing In A Rushed State
Getting something when you expect it VS getting a better thing a bit later . .
Re: Nintendo's Market Value Drops By $1 Billion After Animal Crossing Switch Delay
Re: Square Enix Collective Is Publishing Circuit Superstars On The Switch In 2020
@oji You beat me to it! I have super fond memories of Super Off Road Racing - something about the way the trucks moved over the ramps felt really satisfying and challenging - loved Wave Race BS for the wave riding mechanics too. We need more dimensions in racing games!
Re: Feature: Dormant Nintendo Franchises We'd Like To See Return On Switch
Very happy to see plenty of love for Wave Race! I LOVED Blue Storm for it’s wonderful wave riding mechanics and constantly changing courses. The presentation was great too - they nailed the feel of being around water - feeling connected to nature and kind of chill amidst this competitive race set-up. A total gem in my eyes!
Re: Pokémon Detective Pikachu Shocks The Competition In Its Opening Weekend
@JayJ That’s what I thought. If it’s older kids, then ok - but far from perfect. Younger kids will be bored, freaked out and occasionally entertained. Worth seeing but anyone thinking this is a good movie for all the family may well be disappointed.
Re: Pokémon Detective Pikachu Shocks The Competition In Its Opening Weekend
Re: Rumour: Best Buy Hides 'Leaked' Switch Games From Public View, But It Might Not Be Over Yet
Link to the Past rumour is a strange one:
Would they release this so close to Links Awakening?
Is it a port or a remake?
If it’s a port does this mean that they’re going to sell SNES games separately rather than include them in the online service?
The first two rumoured games seem to make sense but the Zelda stuff seems fishy to me. . .
Re: Early NPD Figures Suggest Nintendo Outperformed The Competition In January
Re: Feature: What We Expect From The February Nintendo Direct
Re: Feature: What We Expect From The February Nintendo Direct
@gcunit Brilliant - you had me in the edge of my seat! Although I think they’ll save this for E3 - with the addition of the gunship landing in the Nintendo area - right in the middle of an Animal Crossing picknick ground.

Defo upset - off to bed!
Re: Pokémon Sales Slump To All-Time Low In Japan, Despite Strong Worldwide Performance Of Let's Go
Perhaps if they made a truly pokatable - handheld version of the Switch then some game would fair better in Japan?
That and it’s not a full fat, mainline stop off. And the Swich is no where close to the 3DS is terms of install base.
Switch doing gray though - lots of faith in it’s its long term potential. Will outsel Wii eventuallly. . !
Re: Rumour: Metroid Prime Trilogy For Nintendo Switch Is Ready To Be Released
Regarding recent point made by N President about the importance of mobile gaming; Maybe we have Nintendo's mobile riches to thank for them being able to scrap a less than satisfactory 'hardcore' project and start all over?
Re: Rumour: Metroid Prime Trilogy For Nintendo Switch Is Ready To Be Released
Seems very likely to me that an announcement of a Metroid Trilogy and the next direct would be disrupted by what must have been a fairly major discussion about the future of Metroid 4 that would have been going on for a while.
Much better to keep power dry, deliver the bad (but also maybe good) news about Metroid 4 and then leave on a positive note with a direct - and maybe Metroid Trilogy announcement a week or two later.
The recent Indie direct could have been put together as a little sweeter to fill the gap as people waited for news.
Re: Talking Point: How Do You Feel About The Metroid Prime 4 Delay?
Pretty sure they won’t hurry to show a logo at E3 for a while. Maybe the failed first draft will make for a far superior outcome: WiiU - Switch? Sure there was plenty of potential in it - it takes a gutsy (and rich) studio to scrap and start again because they want it to be much better.
Also what’s the chance this means a direct is coming soon? They wanted to get this out of the way first and then focus on the positives. Who knows, maybe the rumoured trilogy is in there to soften the blow!?

Re: Nintendo's Brand Relevance Rises In The UK, PlayStation Still Most Recognised
Re: Wii U Receives First System Firmware Update Since 2017
Got a WiiU for my kids this Christmas and it's been brilliant!
Re: Nintendo Is Considering A Successor To The 3DS According To Its New President
If your ultimate goal is to have as many people as possible interact with your IP then having a single model of dedicated hardware to play those game costing almost £300 is not very smart. Hence this.
Re: Nintendo Is Happy That Sony And Microsoft Pay Less Attention To Younger Audiences
Re: Nintendo Confirms Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Is A "Brand New Game", Not A Wii U Port
Re: Nintendo Announces Pokémon Let’s Go Pikachu! and Let’s Go Eevee! For Nintendo Switch

Re: New Splatoon Secret Project Is Set To "Shock The World" Just Days Before E3
@Koudai1979 I'm definitely hoping for something a little weirder - in keeping with Splatoon - it's pretty nuts!
How about a dash of the rubber costumes from those mad as hell baddies in PowerRangers! A sort of clash between live action, messed up prosthetic madness and cutting edge digital effects - with real INK!
Have to say I think I'm onto something here!
