The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is over five years old now. It's almost definitely one of the best games on the Switch, with people still uncovering secrets and challenging themselves to ridiculous speedrunning challenges. It's a big, open, apocalyptic playground for you to do whatever you fancy in!
We were hoping we'd have a brand new Breath of the Wild game to explore this year, but as you'll likely remember, the sequel was delayed to Spring 2023 just a few weeks ago. But in the UK, at least, it looks like a lot of people are more than happy to wait.
Gamesindustry.biz's Chris Dring revealed that boxed retail sales for Breath of the Wild have increased by 51% in the UK. For a five-year-old, likely full-priced Nintendo first-party game, that's ridiculous.
Maybe... maybe don't cancel that sequel though, Nintendo?
Breath of the wild is the fourth-best selling Switch game at over 25 million copies sold. So the delay, while sad for fans, clearly isn't going to hurt Nintendo's bottom line too much. Except for that share slump, we suppose. Breath of the Wild 2 is just going to explode, isn't it?
Are you still playing Breath of the Wild? Or have you recently picked it up for the first time? Why not let us know.

Breath of the wild was recently updated a week ago and fixed a lot of big speed run glitches … oh wait, it was an April fools day joke
I'm so jealous of those gamers getting to experience it for the first time.
I wonder how many have come from playing Elden Ring.
@Zeldawakening that wasn't real, that was an april fools joke by the community.....
It's pretty clear he was joking. When's the last mainline Zelda game Nintendo cancelled? Brink of Dawn?
Did I make that up? Yes...
@Rob3008 I agree that first time experience is something special.
To all the people experiencing it for the first time, I hope you enjoy it.
It’s like they told everyone ‘you have a year to play the first one before the sequel’ and people were like OK!
Possibly my favourite game of all time! Such good news. Might replay again over summer
That is a pretty awesome bonus if you ask me. I think most of us already expected the new Zelda game to be delayed. It happens with most Zelda releases and the games always end up near perfection by the end of it. I think, to get a game that is aa memorable as a Zelda game, these are the types of sacrifices that need made.
Q : Are you still playing Breath of the Wild?
Me : Not anymore. I have sold the game last October 2021.
@Patendo
I agree with you. Possibly my favorite game of all time as well and been planning to replay it again and for the first time with Switch OLED. Breath of the Wild is one of those special games that you wish could experience for the first time again.
I've had the game for a little over two years. I play it probably every couple weeks, sometimes for hours, sometimes just for 20 minutes. Never gets old.
I have recently picked up the expansion pass but I got the og game in September 2020
Did it really just randomly pop 51% for no reason? No special promotion or sale or anything? That would seem really odd.
Why would you want to cancel a sequel just cause some people just recently found out about Breath of the Wild? Wouldn't it make more sense that because they knew the sequel is coming that they decided to go out and buy the original first. It wouldn't surprise me if they also buy Age of Calamity before that too.
All those lucky people getting to play this masterpiece for the first time. A magical experience.
@Specter_of-the_OLED
Surely you know he is joking?!
Is a masterpiece of a game ever truly old?
@Tyranexx Speaking of, I still need to buy Skyrim finally...
I’m playing it right now with the intent to collect every memory, then defeat Ganon with no divine beasts help. Just felt like it been too long since we had last dlc and I got the bike on master mode, and haven’t played since. Then I hear about delay, which imo, it would have been a bigger surprise if Nintendo didn’t delay it. Oh well, I bet we get a couple ports this summer/fall to tide us over…
I'm a bit confused how a delay promoted a game, like was those people like "poo, I won't have enough time to play the first game because the second one was coming out so soon." Or somethin?!
I'm so annoyed about the delay, I bought another copy of this and burned it!
Might pick this up. I have it on Wii U but I'd like to play it in bed on my switch lite
@Itachi2099 thanks for restating exactly what OP said in their post. Very helpful...
@Rob3008 top tip: hit the back of your head with a heavy rock a few times and then enjoy botw for the first time again about 3 weeks later
@Ulysses That's a game I have, but admittedly have not played yet.
It would have been nice if Nintendo bothered to release the complete physical edition in the west.
Of all the detrimental industry changes that Nintendo has whole-heartedly adopted, God forbid that they should release complete/“game of the year” editions of their games. The base game should be phased out by now.
IGN has a big article with stuff.from digital foundry saying that BoTW2 most likely won't be a switch title due to the amount of graphical improvements in the trailer. So probably more delays until 2024 when a switch 2 will be likely to happen is my future prediction.
I started playing it at the beginning of January, still playing it, have suffering like 180 hours in it, still fun. Surely one of the best games ever. Looking forward to the sequel, I'm sure it will be with the wait.
One of the greatest
launchgames ever released.Booting this up for the first time on my brand new Switch on March 3rd, 2017 is an experience I'll never forget.
@Phlaike hey genius, you do know you can easily edit your messages on the website? The OP didn’t say that it was an April fools day joke at first, only after I pointed it out that he was wrong about a “patch fixing bugs” did he edit his message with a caveat at the end of it to not look like a fool.
I was late to this game, and am finally coming to the end of my manic OCD first playthrough, have tried to finish utterly everything and now have 900 koroks, etc etc. 385 hours (not been rushing!). Debating master mode now we have another year to wait...
That's goes to show how EggExcellent this game is and will be for the history books. Still have to get the 4 Guardian then get the motorcycle then finish the game eventually.
