Re: Deals: Got Your SNES Classic Mini? Then Check Out These Essential Accessories

TJM

Just got mine - it's been a LONG time since I had a product buzz like this - amazing for a £70 mini device! Nintendo did a great thing (minus the stock shortage).

Saving it for my wife's birthday - sort of. . . She's away this weekend and I'm in tomorrow night looking after the kids while all my mates go out on the lash. She's agreed that I should 'test' it to make sure it works ok!

True love!

Re: Hardware Review: The SNES Classic Mini Is The Perfect Link To The Past

TJM

Oooooohh BABY!! Just got the email of confirmation from Nintendo - mine is on it's way!!

Got another one for my 9 year old niece - it's going to blow her 21st century mind!!

Already started the 'debate' with my wife about whether we can let our 2 & 5 year olds play Street Fighter. Can't really go just with the older one playing so it's all or nothing!! I say let them play - they'll be drawn to Contra for obvious reasons too - can't wait to see how far they get!

Happiness is a warm email.

Re: Editorial: The SNES Classic Mini, Star Fox, and Downsides to Being a Mega Drive Kid

TJM

I was an Amiga kid back in the day and loved the mix of arcade and PC type titles.

I always felt it never rivalled the consoles for what they where great at though. The cool kids had SNES's and that was that. I remember briefly getting a turn on Mario World at a pals at lunchtime gaming gatherings - one life pass it on rules. Had another pal who was from Hong Kong and his older brother had all kinds of cool SNES games and gear. So my experience has been much more aspirational than hands on.

I've got a pre-order in and delighted to say The only game i've really ever played much of is Street Fighter. Going to take my time and savour them all.

Re: SNES Classic Mini Consoles Spotted In The Wild Ahead Of Official Release

TJM

Got 2 on order - Game + Nintendo. Lost the card I ordered them on so a bit nervous. Game allowed me to change it - apparently it's being 'packed' since yesterday. But Nintendo apparently have to process it and contact me to prompt a change. Checking my email + junk every 15 mins.

One is for me, one for my niece. If the Nintendo one messes up I have a difficult decision to make!

Re: Toys 'R' Us Seeks Bankruptcy Protection in North America

TJM

I have a really bad and a really good experience with TRU:

I managed to get a pre-order in for the SNES classic for my niece's birthday with them but lost the card it was ordered on. Had a SUPER frustrating exchange on the phone and via email for about 3 days trying to get them to change my card details on the order - a classic computer says no. Ended with them cancelling my order. Livid does not do it justice.

I did however once have a really good experience there when looking for a lego set for my Spidey mad son. It had gone out of stock everywhere and was getting really near to Christmas - but their inventory said they had one left in. The guy was young twenties and super helpful and cool. He just seemed like someone who really enjoys their job - helping kids get cool toys. He took ages but found the toy somewhere really random and Christmas in our house was better for it. I still remember the feeling of getting back in the car clutching the bag with the snow outside and my kid asleep in the back.

The lesson - people can be cool. Computers can't.

Re: Reggie Wary Of Making Any Promises On Switch Stock This Christmas

TJM

@MartyFlanMJFan @Supadav03

Some really good suggestions and advice here - thanks. Have either of you had Wii Party U? Think my little one might like the simple quick games but reviews are mixed. Problem is most game reviews aren't done with young kids in mind - or from people with that experience.

I wonder if the site would want to do a Wii U parents buying guide with christmas in mind - sort of a 'last throw of the dice for the Wii U' kind of deal.

I might contact them about it as I have a bunch of games on a list I've been collecting for a while since we decided to get ours one for this christmas.

However - my stuff is all speculative - would you guys want to contribute a few suggestions and comments if it went ahead? They seem to love writing articles with Amazon links in them - must be affiliated - so this might be something they would be interested in.

To be honest someone with needs to write a blog about this stuff - best Nintendo games for kids and general parents advice. Lots of people probably buy the obvious ones but it seems like there are loads of ways to game with kids. Family Gamer TV used to have a bunch of good Nintendo stuff but they seem to have and gone towards promoting Disney toys and Playstation stuff.

Re: Reggie Wary Of Making Any Promises On Switch Stock This Christmas

TJM

@Supadav03 Cheers for the info dude - really appreciate the help. Looking at Lego Marvel Superheros - may well pick that up for the younger ones birthday in Feb. Also Tank Tank Tank looks fun for a bit of a blast em up.

Breath of the Wild keeps popping up in convos about young kids playing Nintendo - was looking at some forums too.

I might get it for me, let the kids play along and then make them save files so they can just roam about finding stuff and getting into fights with Bokoblins. Seems like the way it puts you back where you died makes it really good for young kids. My nephew has it and my son had a little go and was loving it - beat a Samurai looking dude and got a sweet looking sword - that totally hooked him!

Re: Reggie Wary Of Making Any Promises On Switch Stock This Christmas

TJM

@MartyFlanMJFan HA HA - OUCH!! The pain . . . for you both!! Can empathise with his rage - I bet she rubbed it in too!

I have 2 boys who both like a bit of rough and tumble so this will no doubt be repeated in our house for years to come - especially when I give into getting them Smash Bros. Have a SNES mini on preorder (was super lucky) so seeing them play Street Fighter will be hilarious!

Have you tried Afordable space adventures? If I'm right in thinking it's a spaceship exploration game on the eshop - can be played 3 player with each player controlling a different aspect of a spaceships functionality. Might try it with mine when they're a little older.

Re: Reggie Wary Of Making Any Promises On Switch Stock This Christmas

TJM

@MartyFlanMJFan Wow, cheers dude - great reply! Really appreciate the feedback - it's really good to hear stories of your kids being able to enjoy games like Zelda, Pikmin and Splatoon at an early age.

I will take your advice and try these games earlier than I may have been inclined to. Amazing how Nintendo just seems to get how kids can play video games and knows how to challenge and engage them so well.

Really appreciate the help - my kids will too!!

Also - cool pic - was listening to Bad the other day coz it was in the radio for it's 25th anniversary and have had the album on ever since - legend!

Re: Reggie Wary Of Making Any Promises On Switch Stock This Christmas

TJM

@MartyFlanMJFan Cheers dude - what a lovely message!

I'm wondering if you have any good tips for games at different ages? How old were yours when they got into Splatoon & Pikmin 3? Two games I'd love to play with mine but can't see happening for a few years.

My focus is on my 6 year old but I would also love some games we can enjoy with the 3 year old too. I think I'll shy away from tricky platformers at first - the older one liked Mario on NES at first but finds it too stressful after not long.

To begin with I'm thinking of getting:
Mario Kart, Lego City Undercover (heard little ones like roaming around), Nintendoland & Wii sports Club.

Wondering about Yoshi Wooly World or Kirby Return to Dreamland too. Also Wii Party U or Wii Sports Resort.

Have Mario 3D world, Captain Toad, Mario Maker & Rayman on the list for afters.

Would love to bring in Smash - they would LOVE it but already get pretty hyped just watching Power Rangers so not sure if it's a good idea. Also like the look of latest Star Fox for co-op. Zelda might work in this way too but wondering if they should be able to read properly to play it.

So much goodness in the years ahead! Any advice welcome but no worries if not. Really glad you had so much fun with your family gaming - it's something I'm really looking forward too.

Re: Reggie Wary Of Making Any Promises On Switch Stock This Christmas

TJM

@Nincompoop I know what you mean. I just bought a Wii U for my kids for christmas because they're too young to look after a Switch (they'll be 3 + 6 shortly after christmas).

I'd love to get one but hey would knacker the screen and the connection taking in and out of the dock. Saying nothing of what would get stuffed into the vents!

If Nintendo follow form and are smart ( which I think they are ) they will release some sort of kid friendly version in a year or so - which would be perfect for us.

In the mean time I'm amassing a sweet list of Wii U / Wii / VC games that we can dig into as a family - looks like we will be a happy bunch for the next 2 - 3 years. The Wii U may be dead for most but it's looking pretty good to me.

Re: Sensible Soccer Spiritual Successor Sociable Soccer Spotted On Switch

TJM

Holly broken zipsticks! Sensible (World Of) Soccer is one of the most perfect gamesI've played. There can't be a better game to show of the Switch's local multiplayer strengths than this if it's good.

Me and my pals spent countless hours either playing solo on career mode or together in epic winner stays on sessions. Brings back sweet memories of Newcastle being good and that summer of Euro 96 when we'd all finished our GCSE's. I just watched the trailer to this and when the 'Goal scoring super star hero' theme drifted in at the end I got goosebumps!

I agree about the ball trails - I hope they can be switched off as they're really distracting and unnecessary. I wonder if they're showing the game off with them so people can see the awesome swerve on the ball - I used to be able to score from the touchline just past the half way line with John Barnes in the original SS with it.

Really hope this game fulfils the promise of being made by one of the original Sensible guys. They made some great games that didn't quite have the polish of Nintendo - but definitely had a similar attitude towards playability and fun - and a very British version of the weirdness and sense of humour.

I'm getting seriously tempted by a Switch now - Mario is not helping - and now this!!

Re: Feature: Five Things We Expect From the Nintendo Switch Nindies Showcase - Summer 2017

TJM

I'm hopeful for a fun surprise akin to the Rocket League announcement at E3.

Regarding VC: I wonder if it will have the rewind and save anytime features that the SNES (pronounced 'snez') classic does?

I don't think we'll see anything of it until early next year - after the SNES has built up loads of hype and demand. I was going to say they could use it to attract lapsed gamers for the christmas push but the demand will most likely outstrip supply already.

I've no idea how or if it will take shape. It seems like there are various options that Nintendo has been / is considering. A massive downloadable library of high quality retro Nintendo and 3rd party games would be nice though.

They will probably do something obtuse like announce a cart for the new SNES 3DS with all the SNES classic games on it.

Re: An EA Executive's Four-Year Old Son Helped Him Appreciate the Nintendo Switch Concept

TJM

EA's recent muttering seem to hint at them creating a particular narrative around the Switch that they seem fairly unique - and determined - in peddling.

They're running the system down as a 'serious' games machine. Instead they want their fans to see it purely as a portable 'little brother' to their current - or upcoming graphics beasts. Something cool and fun - but not fit for purpose when you want to play with the big boys.

It kind of makes sense when you consider how heavily invested EA are in their games realising one of the 'core gamer' ideals: of worlds that you can inhabit and master that feel like super polished surrogates to our real world. No abstraction - no suspending disbelief - blockbuster style shiz with you as the lead - only with even bigger budgets.

They've made such a fuss about their Frostbite engine which may or may not run in some capacity on the Switch. But in no way is it going to show their biggest, shinyest, most profitable properties off to their game defying best on Nintendos console - or bring home the wow factor that is one of the big drivers of sales for these games.

They know most of the teenagers will buy them for the PS4/XBOX/PC - and maybe just maybe pick up the Switch copy for on the side / social play.

But I think they're worried about the more casual gamers. The busier / alternative crowd that want to play FIFA but need it to fit in amongst many other tasks and activity. Who aren't invested in the game clan wars and like the idea of a smaller, quieter, cheaper system you can play in bed or while the TV is in use. Which is excactly the audience Nintendo has targeted in their advertising.

While Nintendo have been losing ground and cultural relevance in the last 10 years - the HD years - EA have been at the forefront of defining expectations of what gamers want from their blockbusters - and their consoles - for better or worse (ok mainly worse).

They may like the Switch - but they need to keep it and Nintendo in their place so it can't change the landscape and shift the needle away from EA's brand of bombast and splendour.

Is that a conspiracy theory?

Re: FIFA 18 Sales Are Important for Future EA Support of Nintendo Switch

TJM

@JunkRabbit Dude, I think you got the wrong end of the stick somewhat. I'm certainly not a conspiracy theorist and I don't have a grudge against EA or feel they're holding anyone to ransom.

I actually think that FIFA on the Switch is a great idea and that it will do great due to the dynamic usability of the system.

I just don't like the way that statement was worded - as if they are doing Nintendo and fans a favour by putting FIFA on the console. It seems very deliberate language - designed to big up their influence in the markets and define their relationship to Nintendo as some kind of generous patron.

They're a business - a giant in the industry in many ways - no problem. I just dislike the corporate nonsense speak.

Re: FIFA 18 Sales Are Important for Future EA Support of Nintendo Switch

TJM

Already posted this on GoNintendo but what the hell:

EA are so full of it - and themselves.

I'm pleased they're putting what looks like a pretty good FIFA game on Switch and I certainly don't expect them to 'support' the Switch or Nintendo - any more than any fan should 'support' any games company.

I have a problem with them making out like they're 'helping grow that install base' - it's bumfluf.

Executives love spouting this sort of codswollop. 'At some point numbers become a factor' (!!?!!). What - like, after you're done with your FIFA charity you might then have to think about your shareholders and 'numbers'?

EA are trying to position themselves as some kind of generous patron to Nintendo - presumably so they can play the 'we've been let down' shtick if they want to back out. Or worse - take a fat slice of credit for the Switch's success if it meets their expectations.

Top tip for EA: Just try and make good games and put them out there for people to play and shut the bleep up.

Re: Nintendo Unveils Gorgeous Samus Edition New Nintendo 3DS XL

TJM

Most people on here seem to LOVE the design. But for those who don't - what would you like instead?
A few ideas to start:

A level map covering the console - back and front.
A pattern of all different Metroids and stages of evolution.
A diagramatic design showing Samus's new range of shooting movement.
A sprite sheet type pattern showing some / all of Samu's movement. Just a better realised image of Samus in a more interesting / better looking position on the 3DS - make her look cooler, smaller and more alone.
A coloured metalic metal case so it looks and feels like Samus's suit far fetched I know, but hey - I'm spit balling!
A sequence of her morph ball rolling - coming out of it - going back in - looping round the console.

Try again Nintendo - we'll forgive you.

Re: Nintendo Unveils Gorgeous Samus Edition New Nintendo 3DS XL

TJM

@BLP_Software You make a fair point. My 3DS special edition expectations are adjusted accordingly.

However, a quick search shows up some examples of how those simple bold graphics can really pop and excite - or how the patterns can turn a fairly bland looking item into something cool and appealing.

I think this version is a total washout - even in the context of the simple treatments. It just doesn't look particularly interesting / cool / fun. Less is more is great - but it's not a replacement for an idea.

Reactions to the design on this post just seem wildly over the top in my opinion - Samus or no Samus. Sorry peeps! That's what made me post originally - my surprise at everyone loosing their minds over something so . . . bland.

Anyway, this is getting out of hand. Cheers for being cool.

Re: Nintendo Unveils Gorgeous Samus Edition New Nintendo 3DS XL

TJM

@BLP_Software Look, I didn't expect it to be a popular comment - especially on this post.

And believe me, I get the hype around the Metroid games and some of the collectable stuff you mentioned which look great and - well like the people who designed them wanted to make something special.

I'd buy a Switch and take the poop I'd get on the chin immediately if Metroid Prime was coming out. I've even thought about buying a 3DS just for this game. (for the record I have young kids so a Wii U is the right option for the family right now and I don't have the money or time for a 'me' console).

But this Samus edition 3DS is a super low effort, utter cash grab exploitation of a beloved franchise. And kind of a piss take of the loyal Nintendo fans who love to collect the merch. No judgement there - some people get lots of joy out of it - good for them.

But I commented because when I saw the SKU I was super underwhelmed. Especially in the context of that other sweet stuff. And when I read the comments - I won't quote specifically but skim read them - people up and down this post are acting like this is a beautiful item.

It's really really not. All kinds of interesting design ideas could have been developed for this using the huge amount of amazing source material. The key thing is - imagine how cool this could have been!!

But no, they coloured it red and yellow, slapped some Samus clip art on top of a vaguely spacey pattern and called it a day. Rubbish effort Nintendo.

People are excited by Metroid and the idea of owning a Metroid themed 3DS - sure - I'd love to see what they could do if they tried. But this tat?!

Metroid deserves better.

Re: Nintendo Unveils Gorgeous Samus Edition New Nintendo 3DS XL

TJM

Minimal effort for maximum fan droolage.

I'm not trying to troll here - as far as I can see it's a bland and uninspired 'special edition' even if you love Metroid.

Surely a big part of the draw of this is merely that everyone knows it will be rare and collectible. Other than that I can see what the fuss is about at all.

Re: Axiom Verge Launches on Switch on 17th October

@Menchi187 I'm with you all the way. I hate it when the same words just keep popping up again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again and again

Stupid words

Re: Talking Point: Capcom, the Nintendo Switch and Gaming Business Realities

TJM

The subtext of this article seems to be: 'Please stop filling our message boards with your delusional notions of loyalty and obligation in relation to Switch and 3rd parties'.

Framing it in relation to numbers is pretty clear - be they clock speeds, RAM, install base, sales figures etc.

This isn't a soap opera - well that's exactly what a message board is - but I mean this as in this situation. So whiners, get real. Do the math(s).

Re: Walmart Cancels All Super NES Classic Pre-Orders

TJM

Classy move by Walmart - who'd have thunk'd it!

Bad news for the fans in Canada and the States. The wait must be driving them mad and crap like this just makes it worse!!

Wishing you all good luck over the pond - may your SNESsy dream come true soon!

Re: '90s Super GP Will Be Power Sliding On To Switch Soon

TJM

This reminds me a bit of Racing Apex - which looks really fun and is apparently coming to Switch and still the Wii U - but this 90's goodness looks cool as well.

https://madewith.unity.com/sites/default/files/game/image/ra_unitycap3.jpg

It's important to remember that development of any creative media outcome can be fraught with re-do's, difficulties and slow downs - especially for small teams - who are often working well beyond their capacity, knowhow and experience.

It's easy to be impatient on a forum but it's a different thing altogether when it's you and your reputation on the line and you're in over your head but striving to make something worth while.

Sometimes it works out great - sometimes it doesn't. Every project is different for all sorts of reasons. Good luck to them I say.

Re: Reminder: Here Are the Times for the Splatoon 2 Splatfest World Premiere

TJM

This is a bit off topic but I'm LOVING how Nintendo is smashing it in the gaming news / activity this year. Since January we've had so much stuff to look forward to / play / watch / read / discuss - pretty much all the way through the year.

It's been really exciting and it feels like it keeps building too. I mean, they announced the SNES mini 2 weeks after E3! Then we had Zelda DLC. Now they have Splatoon + Splatfests, SNES mini release on the horizon. Then Mario, Mario + Rabbids, Xenoblade and more Zelda DLC.

Sweet times! On the subject of sweet - Go team Ice Cream (Rum + Raisin)!

Re: Random: Internet Reacts Badly To The New Snake Pass Menu Icon

TJM

Maybe they're planning a free to play mobile app and they want to tie the two together.

It does look oddly cheap amongst the others - but it stands out (hideous white boarder screams executive committee move) and has garnered them press.

My bet is the snake will be winking on the next update.

Re: Random: Internet Reacts Badly To The New Snake Pass Menu Icon

TJM

I love it when loads of people loose their sh*t over seemingly small, everyday design changes.

Same thing happened when Ikea stopped using Futura as their type face and replaced it Verdana - (because it tied in better with their online stuff).

Shows that people really do care about graphic design.

Re: Former Sony And Microsoft Exec: Nintendo Has Surprised Me With Switch

TJM

@MrGawain I agree. I think Nintendo have learned a valuable lesson about how they market their brand - making it aspirational to young adults pulls in the younger and older crowd as well.

But they have a steel core running through their culture that will always prioritise fun and engaging experiences over visual high jinks.

And they trust that the public, inundated by the consumer culture to desire flashier and flashier tech, will respond when offered something with genuinely original and exciting ideas.

Re: Former Sony And Microsoft Exec: Nintendo Has Surprised Me With Switch

TJM

@Pod Agree - kids are too often overlooked - how many people have their childhood to thank for their love of Nintendo games!

Always makes me chuckle hearing people gripe when 'too easy' games like Kirby are announced or included on the SNES classic. Nintendo have to look after the kids too - the font from which their fans develop.

Got me a SNES classic on pre-order and can't wait to unleash it on my unsuspecting 5 year old. Had his older Xbox One owning cousins over a few weeks ago and Mario Bros on the original NES went down a storm! Have a secret SNES mini pre-order for them too - minds will be blown!

Re: First Impressions: Kicking Off With FIFA 18 on the Nintendo Switch

TJM

      • CALLING ANY GOOD GAME STUDIO WITH HALF A BRAIN (and a super cool music composer) - - -

Just make a great rip off of Sensible World of Soccer and put that in the Switch.

That game, portable, with online and local multiplayer / leagues / player trades, and co-op mode would be AMAZING and a sweet match for the Switch and it's dinky little shareable joy-cons.

Multiplayer football fun. Done. DO IT!!

Re: First Impressions: Kicking Off With FIFA 18 on the Nintendo Switch

TJM

I'm just imagining a Heath Robinson style drawing of a sweating gamer with a T.V, PS4, surround sound system and generator strapped awkwardly around his body as he plays FIFA 18 'full fat coke edition!' on the tube.

All held together with bits of string and planks of wood, naturally. Oh, and the generator is coal powered - which is causing much consternation with his fellow passengers.

Title would read 'If a jobs worth doing, it's worth doing in HDR, 1080p at 60fs!'

Re: Feature: The NES and SNES Mini Could Live On Through Nintendo Switch

TJM

@ThanosReXXX I definitely agree that the form factor is a massive reason that the Classic mini range has connected with so many people. Having that console under the TV and that controller in your hand makes it an exciting and genuinely emotional experience for some - and people love coming home from the shops with a cool impulse buy to open and try out. (supply allowing)

However, a VC bundle would certainly make a lot of sense in the context of the Classic mini hype - much easier to sell the idea to people once they've been sold on a core part of it already. And it brings so much press and public awareness along with it to bear on the Switch.

I'm not sure Nintendo even needs loads of people to get their hands on the Classic Minis - by Christmas this year they will have already done the job: Reminding loads of 30 - 45 year olds how much they love nintendo and playing video games. I've had plenty such conversations since Switch and NES mini.

And lets face it, there's nothing Gen X-ers love more than sharing their childhood joys with their unsuspecting offspring. I know, I've done it plenty. And what will those offspring want more than retro Nintendo games consoles - Shiney new cool Nintendo consoles.

I think Nintendo knows what they're doing. They might have made a few mistakes along the way but they've done a great job of selling the idea of Switch and their retro catalogue so far.

Re: It Seems Argos Is Cancelling Some SNES Classic Mini Pre-Orders In The UK

TJM

@jamess I'm very interested in how they approach this. I agree - there is massive potential there.

I think they have something up their sleeve and the Classic mini range is one facet of it - a way of raising awareness and interest - awakening peoples love for Nintendo. And making hods cash of course.

I think they're onto something in the way that the hardware (the mini consoles) help people connect with the retro games in a way that doesn't happen with a virtual console service.

The sales fiasco is certainly not helping but I recon Classic mini is part of a broader plan and I'm looking forward to them outlining what it is.

Re: It Seems Argos Is Cancelling Some SNES Classic Mini Pre-Orders In The UK

TJM

@darthstuey Well that's a good point.

They created a monster with the NES classic and now every wide boy and his gran will jump on the scalping bandwagon because it's a well know opportunity to make a few quid. So increased supply is unlikely to meet the increased sculdugery.

All I can say is I hope they have a plan of some sort. Maybe if they are releasing batches of pre orders at different times and stores it increases peoples chances of being in the right place at the right time. And if they are keeping a large supply for store shelves - and the stores limit the amount you can buy - that would help.

But I agree it's a mess. In the end, prioritsing fans through MyNintendo would have been the best idea - at lease it would have by passed the scalpers to some degree.

It's a shame if it overshadows a great product again.

Re: It Seems Argos Is Cancelling Some SNES Classic Mini Pre-Orders In The UK

TJM

@RocketRonald - Sure, some are buying to sell on at daft money but I bet quite a few people are buying for friends and relatives who would love one but aren't up to speed on where and when to look.

I've done that - got 3 from different stores. One for me, one for my niece who was devastated last year when Santa failed to bring the NES classic she asked for, and one spare - in case of failed pre-orders.

If they all come through it will go to a lucky friend, relative or neighbour who is desperate for one but can't get it later on.

I've read people suggesting these have been made for fans and they should be prioritised. I see the point but think Nintendo wants them to go to people who are not currently engaged in their brand too - lapsed gamers ready to be re-energise with nostalgia - and a new generation of young people hungry for something cool and different from the usual console/gamer image. I'll prioritise kids as I think it's a great entry into video games and cool for them to have something hard to get hold of
