Re: Reggie "Can't Say" If A Cloud Save Solution Is Coming To Switch

TJM

I totally agree that save data is an issue that needs sorting ASAP and it should have been done from the start. So Nintendo (not Reggie) - sort it out please. If anyone has lost there BOTW save because of this then that's pretty tragic and crappy.

On the subject of their ongoing work on the various other online components: Here's a few quotes from Reggie from a new Polygon article:

“As Nintendo looks at the overall online digital experience there's a recognition that there's a lot of work to be world class,” Fils-Aime said. “And we pride ourselves ... We believe our IP is world class. We believe that when we create a piece of hardware it's world class. We need to get our digital environment world class. And that's what we're working hard to do. “

“As we were proceeding along development, there were things we wanted to do with Nintendo Switch online that extended the development time,” Fils-Aime said. “When you look at the products [from Nintendo] that have been delayed, typically it's worth the wait. Breath of the Wild is a great example.”

“We wanted to make sure that it is a robust, well-executed online environment, and for the $20 annual subscription fee, the consumer says, 'This is a no-brainer. I want to participate. I'm all in.’”

Note he's saying WE - he's not the head honcho. He's just the front man there to talk the good stuff up and take the hits with confidence. What more can he say?

It's up to Nintendo fans to put a bit of faith in the company (not Reggie remember - you don't have to like him - i doubt he cares). Personally I think what they've done with the Switch and the games they're releasing is AMAZING - and I'm totally happy if they decided to prioritise getting the hardware and the games right first.

Re: Reggie Fils-Aime Dismisses Threat To Switch From Microsoft's Xbox One X

TJM

Nintendo need to keep up to speed with the other platforms - not on a par technically, more in relation to their approach to services, relationships with 3rd party studios, and just generally to stay relevant with gaming culture.

The outlook is mixed but I believe positive on that front. If they do that and they push themselves to be the best version of Nintendo - then I think they will be around - and exciting for a long time. They're a special company that revels in being different and they're making some pretty cool waves with the Switch.

Hope they can make VC and online work well for their customers. Their online will never be the same as others - partly due to the nature of the hardware ad partly because they have a major focus on keeping kids protected and encouraging parents to feel at ease. As a parent I really appreciate that.

Re: We Know There's An Appetite For Virtual Console On Switch, Says Reggie Fils-Aime

TJM

How about just wait and have a bit of patience? Maybe they're a bunch of clowns who don't have a clue and think everyone is an idiot and will buy all the 'marketing slang'.

Or maybe they're just taking their time to make a different approach really work and they don't have anything they can really say yet. It's very possible they want to make it really comprehensive and something they can market strongly. Who knows what form it will take - it might be done through sections of the e-shop or be a separate themed portal.

Sure Reggie waffles on - but he's a figure head - it's part of his job to project confidence and take flack.

Is it not worth giving them the benefit of the doubt due to the fact they've released a great console with a new innovative concept which looks like it will be a bit hit. And they've lined up a sequence of stellar games to carry it through it's first year - and most likely beyond.

I recon they're going to show something pretty cool for VC in good time. No rush Nintendo - take you're time to get it right.

Re: Ubisoft Confirms New IP, Starlink: Battle for Atlas, on Nintendo Switch

TJM

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Dude, go buy a chunky powerful console if you want those games. The Switch isn't the home for them - it's a freakin' tablet that you can plug into the TV.

The big studio's are going to see it as a place to sell different games - maybe some unique ones - because the other big shiny ones sell just fine on PS4 etc.

Re: Talking Point: EA and Bethesda Highlight Nintendo Switch as a Portable Powerhouse at E3

TJM

Seems like a good deal of people here are fine with it. Me too.

Can't understand how on earth anyone would think the big 3rd party studios would be able - or want to - present the Switch version on anything like an equal footing to the PS4 or Xbox.

To imagine they would is to massively underestimate the value non Nintendo gamers place on graphics and 'immersion'. Sony and Xbox are shooting for a space where the Switch can't live - and isn't trying to.

Sure it's a hybrid - but marketing demands that it's the benefit that is sold - not the compromise. Nintendo can push a different message because it's making games that are designed only for that system and look and play great whichever way they're played - or hand picking others that effectively do the same. But the latest 3rd part games designed to play on far more powerful machines?

AAA studios will sell it as the great portable that it is - with the potential to open up a new space in the marketplace - and hopefully we'll get plenty of thoughtfully made versions of big games that we can enjoy wherever we like - including on a big screen TV.

Re: Feature: Our Nintendo Hopes and Dreams for E3 2017

TJM

@Ralek85 I'm going to contradict myself here and say - I can see your point about Mario and needing something else to capture the attention of a different audience.

I'm not sure it'll be Metroid - Nintendo fans love it but do others? They can save it - and will need games like it for a non Mario / Zelda time.

It could well be a new IP from Retro. Something really original and exciting to get tongues wagging amongst non Nintendo fans would really help the system.

Re: Feature: Our Nintendo Hopes and Dreams for E3 2017

TJM

@subpopz Agreed - Long waits and endless teases just leads to apathy when it turns out it's just a video game and not some new form of virtual consciousness.

I wish there was a few less huge 'AAA' titles that feel largely homogeneous and developers put more resources into original medium sized games. Feel the same way about films.

Re: Feature: Our Nintendo Hopes and Dreams for E3 2017

TJM

@Krillin I'm finding myself agreeing with you. Not sure Nintendo will have the Switch stock to cope if they shoot their load to early.

They can make a huge deal of Mario - I think that will be the big focus and should be. Then we'll see little bits of the other 2017 games - and maybe something unseen like Pikmin Animal Crossing. That would be great.

I'd love to see Virtual Consol but I think that will be saved for another Direct - Maybe they'll tease it with a GC announcement. Retro's game would be the icing on the cake.

Re: FIFA 18 on Switch to Include Ultimate Team, EA Boasts of Most 'Advanced' Portable Version

TJM

@foobarbaz I think we'll see quite a few more "portable versions" of 3rd party games for the Switch. It'll be used as marketing speak to set expectations and differentiate from the beefy graphics on the much more powerful consoles and PC's - especially with the PS4 + Scorpio widening that gap significantly.

It might sound crap to someone who bought a Switch because they believe in the system and want to play Nintendo games, but it might just be the thing that persuades a load of others to jump on board.

Either way, the versions are always going to differ - and portability is the reason and the benefit - as that's what Nintendo chose to prioritised over performance with the design of the Switch.

Would be interested to see if people like yourself end up with both versions after seeing others playing it out and about.

Re: FIFA 18 on Switch to Include Ultimate Team, EA Boasts of Most 'Advanced' Portable Version

TJM

I recon this will be a BIG hit. Playing a proper FIFA game on the go, out and about - with your pals and without a wifi connection - can be a MASSIVE draw for fans of the game - especially young people.

Plenty of Nintendo fans want EA to make an effort so the hordes of people who are indifferent or might write off the system actually pay attention - and the system can thrive. Well together with Nintendo's recent excellent marketing this game may be a fairly big step in the right direction.

Just picture the ads of teens and twenty somethings around the world playing FIFA in the park, on street corners, on the bus or train on the way to the match - at half time. Once we see footballers playing this on their away trips it will catch on big time.

The World Cup 2018 will be a massive marketing opportunity for this and Nintendo!

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of the Pokémon Direct and Its Big Reveals?

TJM

I'm amazed people invest so much hope and hype into the daily cycle of rumour tit-bit reporting. These sites have to get readers and views. So they're going to publish some wacky stuff - even if they're decent sites like this one. And it's fun to read and speculate. But rumours are rumours - they don't call them news.

However, I agree with people on this thread who are saying that a Direct was over the top and the news didn't fit the form. An announcement with some nice flashy video and images would have sufficed. That bit when they showed the Switch at the start - they must have known they were f*cking with people - right?

My guess is it'll come next Autumn/winter when they have plenty of stock, good awareness in the younger audience and their parents and it'll be a smash hit.

Either that or it'll launch the year after with a kid friendly Switch - bummer time frame for Pokemon fans but it would be a huge shot in the arm for the system.

And ports of really good games are still really good games. Especially for the shed loads of people who will buy the Switch and don't even know the Wii U existed.

Re: Pokkén Tournament DX Confirmed For Nintendo Switch

TJM

Potential reasons why no Pokemon for Switch yet:

Mario at christmas and limited stock - no point in competing.

3DS / new 2DS still has legs - especially with new Pokemon game.

The Switch looks set for a good run- they have years of slots to fill with big games

Switch less suited to younger gamers (parents perspective) so maybe they wait till they make a kids friendly Switch and launch together.

Re: It Looks Like Dino Dini's Kick Off Revival Is Taking To The Pitch On Switch

TJM

While we're (I am) positioning the Switch as the new Amiga (seriously, think about it!) - let me show some love for a teeny tiny game included on a free disk on the front of Amiga Power many moons ago. It was called Biplanes - and it was 2 player fun in a nutshell.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VOfG04NFt0E

It's super simple - you fly your plane around a single 2D screen and try and shoot your friend. But had a really cool mechanic where you had to gain height so you could get manouvarability and speed to attack - and you'd have to gain height again etc etc. Me and my mate spent hours playing this beautiful little game. It's everything that the flying shooting plane game on Wii Sports isn't - tight, fast, fun.

It's the sort of thing someone could make a new version of for switch super easily - or Nintendo could include it as a bonus / waiting game. Included in a new Pilot Wings perhaps?

Edit: 'included in a'

Re: It Looks Like Dino Dini's Kick Off Revival Is Taking To The Pitch On Switch

TJM

@SLIGEACH_EIRE - I totally agree that Sensi was better than Kick Off. But I'm not so sure on your idea about them not being needed. It may be my age - almost 40 - but picking up a FIFA game is a completely different experience to me.

I loved the pace, fluidity and flexibility of Sensi. The view point, the space on the pitch and the analogue control feel (as in not so computer directed) gave it a great sense of anything could happen. FIFA feels like a grind to me.

I think there's room for a great pick up and play game like Sensi if they could update it for a modern audience. Total Soccer was a pretty good, fluid (quite hard at first) game that followed Sensi's lead. They both shared that feeling of possibility and immense satisfaction when you strung together a series of killer passes culminating in a goal.

The Switch with its local multiplayer superpowers seems like a natural home for a game like that - it would make me - and possibly a few of my none gaming mates go out and buy one pretty sharpish anyway. A few of them have Amigas that come out now and again just to play Sensi - and none of them have any other games systems.

Re: Nintendo Reveals ARMS' Single Player Mode, Grand Prix

TJM

I think there's a fair bit more to the single player than they showed here. The intro was really intriguing and I recon they're going to tease out the story stuff via twitter in the coming weeks.

The game looks great. And I mean LOOKS - the aesthetic is really cool - it's mad as hell but it's really thoughtfully done. Even though there are some really different fighters, they all work individually and somehow as a whole. Nintendo have gone full Nintendo with this and I love it.

Re: Nintendo Direct for ARMS is Coming on 17th May

TJM

Ok, predictions:

1. Arms will have a fair bit more to show in terms of multiplayer features and modes. We know there are a few more characters to come so we'll likely get a good look at them. It will also have a substantial single player with a strong story, and an interesting world and background.

2. A fairly substantial U.I improvement for Switch including themes - MK, Zelda, Arms, Splat, Mario, Fire Emb.

3. Further details on online service - features, voice chat, trail launch date - in time for Arms - to get everyone to jump onto it before Splatoon.

4. Splatoon will have some further surprises with multiplayer relating to the Salmon Run level and a really cool looking single player campaign which will have some sort of dynamic effect on the multiplayer side.

5. A cheeky tease for E3 - a big game or V.C - Gamecube.

Too much too soon?

Re: EA Is Considering Bringing More Games to Nintendo Switch

TJM

@Krillin Glad I'm not the only one. SWOS is ideal for the Switch and it's social gaming angle - simple, fast, quick play - and SO addictive. You could be working on your team out and about in between bouts of play.

If only I knew who's house to camp outside of to make this happen. Not holding my breath for a Sensible Software reform though.

Playing Switch SWOS with pals would make me a happy fella! Maybe someone else will make a similar and just as well handling game. Doubt it though.

Re: EA Is Considering Bringing More Games to Nintendo Switch

TJM

@kobashi100 Yes, an old version wouldn't go down too well with the teens hungry for the newest and latest.

But the big difference for Nintendo now is that they offer a unique form factor that offers those players something totally new. Portability is a huge deal for teens who spend quite a bit of time out and about and are highly social.

It would take quite a leap to get it into the hands of the footy loving PS4 + Xbox crowd - but there's no doubting that it would be a genuinely exciting prospect for them - so there's certainly a chance for Nintendo there.

That sort of market penetration would do wonders for their brand - and most likely pull many lapsed / non Nintendo gamers into the eco system.

Re: EA Is Considering Bringing More Games to Nintendo Switch

TJM

In the U.K, where FIFA, CoD and GTA5 rule the screens of many a teenage lad, Nintendo is a bit of a niche for non kid gaming (that's just my personal opinion / experience).

FIFA in portable form - with the ability to play locally against pals with other Switch's would certainly help change a few peoples minds. As soon as a few Premier League players tweet out pics of themselves playing with each other (easy!) that shiz will get real.

I'm holding out for a Switch version of Sensible Soccer personally. IMAGINE HOW AWSOME THAT WOULD BE!!!!!!!!!

Re: Preview: Battle Mode is Back On Form in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

TJM

@gatorboi352 I strongly disagree. I work in children's ward that is well stocked with PS3's & 4's. What do I see them playing solo and together all the time? Mario Kart Wii.

Mario Kart has always been a game that kids will love - and that people who loved it as kids will love again and again at different stages in later life. The Wii U failed not only as a concept but also hugely as a message - so many people didn't know it was a console (me included). That doesn't mean the people who loved Mario Kart on SNES, N64, GC, DS, Wii and 3DS have forgotten how much fun it is.

I'm only on this site because the Switch has made me remember how much I love Nintendo games. I haven't played Mario Kart (or a console) since Uni (quite a few years ago) and I still remember the great times I had with pals all day round the TV.

The Switch has the Nintendo magic all over it and I for one will be getting one - and MK 8 Delux - as soon as my kids are old enough to enjoy it too (which will be soon thanks to the thoughtful peeps at Nintendo). Can't freakin wait!!

Re: The Switch Is The Fastest-Selling Video Game System In Nintendo History

TJM

Peeps, seems like a certain troll is getting a fair bit of encouragement in the form of replies and raised heckles. But isn't that the point for them?

Trolls can simply be ignored.

Or - if we want to talk about something they're saying - then don't refer to them directly. Make it about the broader topic they raise. After all it is good to consider an opposite position and have something to push back against. Use it as a jumping off point for more interesting chat.

Just my 2 pence.

Re: The Switch Is The Fastest-Selling Video Game System In Nintendo History

TJM

I'm really enjoying this news! Of course there are doubts around this console - it's a entirely new type of device as far as the mass market is concerned. On top of that it's coming after a rather sad looking (and in plenty of cases unknown) flop for nintendo. So the awareness around them as a contemporary console power needed a serious shot in the arm.

What @JaxonH said is really exciting because it's how I hope this system is going to go. I think Nintendo have developed something really smart and inventive - not only with the switch but their wider strategy around it. It seems to me that they have developed their wider audience / casual gamer Wii strategy: Now a wider audience, given the opportunities to play where and when they want and a wide variety of engaging game experiences, can simply be gamers.

Zelda isn't just a great game to play, it's visual style evokes a story playing out on the screen. It's tapping into a broader adventure romance that goes way beyond video games. I think that title was made to open up the idea of what 'proper / hardcore gaming' can be and who can enjoy it.

And I have absolutely no doubt about the mass market appeal of Mario Kart. Nintendo know how powerful and broad the appeal of that game is. Delux looks knockout as a game and the marketing around it is big and brash and full of colour. There are an awful lot of people who haven't played it and I think it will be a huge boost for the Switch.

I agree with @Tetsuro - the only thing that will slow them down between now and the Autumn is stock shortage.

P.s - Mario Christmas

Re: Feature: A Chat About Zelda: Breath of the Wild and The Evolution of the Franchise

TJM

Nice article - feels like a discussion and some interesting smaller points made.

I just listened to the podcast over at Gamesradar: http://www.gamesradar.com/radioradar-podcast-70-nintendo-switch-is-coming-in-hot/

It's pretty critical of nintendo and in particular the switch launch - even the pro nintendo guy is sceptical. He also has some large reservations about the crafting elements of BOTW. I quite like to hear different opinions about stuff that I'm excited about - and I certainly am about this. There are definitely people outside of the Nintendo fan base that aren't seeing this the same way.

I'll definately be interested to hear what they have to say in the next episode when they've had their hands on the system properly. One guy in particular is a bit of a div about it all but aside from him the others seem pretty measured.

Wish I could get a Switch - will be getting a Wii U to play on with the young kids this year (and Zelda for me) so maybe in a few years I'll pick one up - the games line up will be amazing by then!

Re: Random: Infamous British Tabloid Takes 1-2-Switch a Bit Too Seriously

Amazing meme reply dude - is that from Four Lions? Funniest film I've seen in YEARS! I watched it with my parents a few years ago and they weren't sure at first - but by the scene where the guys are loading a truck whilst shaking their heads to blur their faces on the surveillance cameras they were killing themselves - pun intended

I wonder what the Sun made of THAT!!
