Warner Bros. and Legendary’s live-action film, Detective Pikachu, has defied the video game movie curse at the North American box office in its opening weekend, collecting a total of $58 million when it launched across 4,202 venues. Disney and Marvel’s all-star heroes in Avengers: Endgame managed to withstand the pocket monster assault, raking in $65 million in their third weekend in theatres. Locally – and not calculating inflation – this makes Detective Pikachu the biggest ever opening weekend for a video game movie, earning $11 million more than the 2001 Tomb Raider movie, starring Angelina Jolie.
Outside of North American cinemas, Detective Pikachu made $103 million across 62 international territories. China was the movie's second-biggest audience, bringing in a total of $40 million, and the United Kingdom added a cool $6.6 million to the overall amount ($161 million).
Speaking to Variety, Warner Bros’ head of domestic distribution Jeff Goldstein said he was “giddy” and made it clear it was a “big weekend” for the film. Goldstein said the success was “because of the lighthearted nature of the film” and the fact it didn't require viewers to be Pokémon fans. Critical reviews so far have been mixed. If you haven't already, read our own written review or view the above video version.

This is amazing! I still have to go and watch it am so excited!
Awesome. Glad it's doing well.
Going to see it in about 15 minutes with the family.
I saw Detective Pikachu last night. It was Freggin awesome and amazing in 3D!
Detective Pikachu had the largest ever domestic opening for a movie based off a video game (58 million vs Lara Croft's Tomb Raider's (2001)with a 47 million opening)
I really enjoyed it, glad to hear it's doing great
It was good, all the kids that went to see it with me really enjoy the film. We all have fun watching it at the big screen. My sister and their family are planning to see it later tonight so hope they too enjoy it.
I only hear positive things from this movie. Reminder to take most movie critics with a grain of salt
It's a fantastic film. Nails both Pokemon fans and the general public.
It's a great movie. Made my childhood dream of living with Pokémon seem real for a moment. Can recommend anyone that likes Pokémon even the slightest to watch it!
I tend to not put much stock in movie critic reviews. I feel like they have to sit through so many different kinds of movies that they have very different tastes from the average viewer. They try to look for something that is high art, while general moviegoers are looking for something entertaining. Detective Pikachu is certainly entertaining.
Watched the movie and liked it a lot. Lots of twists and the CG work was on point.
All in all, I'd give it an 8.5/10
@Kalmaro Yep, I agree with you. It clearly is a Pokémon movie done right. I also score the movie a solid 8.5/10 which is absolutely high. (Was a bit predictable though, and you really need to like Pokémon before watching)
Watched it and really did feel like the best video game adaptation ever made. It’s very weird but also very fun
I loved the movie. Only minor complaint I have is that the movie's mystery is pretty easy to solve for viewers familiar with Pokemon. All in all though I'm really happy with the movie.
@PBandSmelly in my country they didn’t even give us the booster packs....
I really enjoyed the film. Had a great time with the kids (who all seemed to love it). A lot of care and respect was shown toward the franchise.
@BensonUii I’ve been watching all the various video game movies for the next episode of this podcast I’m a part of. We plan to talk about the top 5 best and worst. I didn’t watch assassin’s creed but apparently it was pretty bad
Deserves it. Think overall it's a bit better than most reviewers are saying it is. A lot of "does the job" kind of comments. Think it has a really nice core to it. Actually kind of prefer the world of being friends with Pokemon first versus battling them. That'd make for a boring game franchise but there was a really nice message about how yeah you can't talk to animals but they can understand your intent, underlined in the bulbasaur herd scene. Led to an absurd moment in the theater when I sorta started choking up and lightly shaking in front of my girlfriend and her 6 year old lol. Who were pretty chill during that part. My biggest gripe is that I wish the film would have relaxed more in spots and just had more fun with itself. Pikachu does that well. Ryan Reynolds' range convinced me he was right for the part. Very good movie tho maybe not captial G great. Pokemon float fight in the end was totally a Smash Bros reference.
You definitely do need to be a fan of Pokemon! This movie is otherwise just another generic blockbuster without a person being into the series.
I really enjoyed it...shame Rhyme City was pretty much London with some stuff added on top, it took me out of the action when it was set at a building where I worked at! There was still a lot of fun to be had, I as worried the trailer showed all the best bits but it didnt. I cant say I care about watching it again though and I'm not fussed to see a sequel what with how it ended.
Perhaps they could do another Pokemon spin off? Pokemon Snap, a story about a budding photographer who discovers a great secret or Learn with Pokémon: Typing Adventure, an Oscar worthy tale about one persons quest to get rid of their illiteracy...
The movie was so good. There are small things you could criticise like Lucy's introduction and some of mewtwo's lines were badly written imo.
But overall it's a great production and great film.
@PBandSmelly they never gave me the cards even though i pre ordered my ticket.
I was (regrettably) too embarrassed to ask for them xD
@Sandro89
Oh trust me, I've been doing that. Most recent examples with all the knob washing over endgame. It's a good movie, but I feel nowhere near worthy of the hype level that has been bestowed upon it by some of these critics & (especially) the overzealous fanboys. I swear that if it wasn't associated with marvel/disney & had been its own movie or connected to another comic book house and / or studios it wouldn't be getting nowhere near this fellated.
In any case, I'm actually looking forward to this movie. It looks pretty fun and looks like if there's actually some respect going on for the source material. I may actually check it out next week. Definitely have to do so before Godzilla: King Of The Monsters comes out.
@PBandSmelly I wish your movie guy was my movie guy xD
@Sandro89 Disney especially is very salty to this movie. Even though a "paid" movie critics is used against this movie, It's not very effective.
Going tomorrow with my little sister, can't wait! I hope this is the beginning of an upswing for video game movies. Now that Disney is out of ideas, Nintendo is a perfect candidate to step in with some fresh family friendly content.
I saw it yesterday, solid 6 out of 10 / 3 stars for me. It was entertaining fluff, mostly what I thought before I went in. The Pokemon looked good and Ryan Reynolds was just as annoying as I expected but I’m not really a fan. Yeah, it was OK because it wasn’t ever going to be one of the best films of the year but it was fun.
I loved every second of this movie, but I can understand why non fans might not enjoy it as much.
Good to hear! I quite enjoyed the movie, certainly had some flaws but was overall well done. I do however, disagree with the sentiment that one has to be a Pokemon fan to enjoy this movie. Quite a few people I know, who don't know Pokemon, saw the movie and enjoyed it just fine. It's a cute movie regardless and the plot doesn't require really any past Pokemon knowledge to follow.
WOOT... fantastic news. Awful weather today in NY - but perhaps next week.
I lost interest about the compound scene.
It didn’t land for me or any of the other 6 adults that went. We had 13 kids with us and although they were entertained, they barely talked about it coming out of the cinema or afterwards. That’s a pretty good metric as far as i’m concerned - my older kid was basically channeling the Spiderverse movie for a week after seeing it. I felt bad because i organised the trip.
I felt like it lacked the charm and fun to be a really good family film. Maybe my expectations were off but I assumed it would be fun for a broad range of kids. Felt like it was pitched squarely at tweens to me. Not worried about the simple plot as was thinking about it as a kids film but the tone was all over the place and just not a very enjoyable film to watch. 6/10
I am not surprised that it is doing well. It sounds like the perfect kids movie.
Seen it 3 times now. I love it
@JayJ That’s what I thought. If it’s older kids, then ok - but far from perfect. Younger kids will be bored, freaked out and occasionally entertained. Worth seeing but anyone thinking this is a good movie for all the family may well be disappointed.
My boys and I loved it. Just what I expected. I want more Pokemon movies like this.
@Wawawaaaario you sir have won the dumb comment of the day award. Congrats.
I’ll check it out when it’s available to rent
It's really not that impressive an opening. Adjusted for inflation, it's still behind Tomb Raider, which made $75 million in it's opening weekend in today's dollars, and movies are more front loaded today than ever.
Will watch it someday!
Much better comment section about this too!
@coolaggro @BensonUii : I think I went along with some friends to see Assassin's Creed. I say "I think" because I seem to recall being asleep throughout most of it, but then, the majority of modern Hollywood films tread the same old ground, and I always wake up during the "boss monster" sequence at the end of the movie, so all I have done is snooze through all of the unnecessary exposition that leads to the final battle.
I can sit through 3 hour art films (sometimes longer) with beautiful cinematography and a great script, but modern Hollywood films bore me beyond comprehension. The US still produces some great indie films though.
I'll consider grabbing the UHD Blu-ray and/or the 3D disc of Detective Pikachu when they are released, but the casting of Reynolds, and to a slightly lesser extent, the hideous animation, has dampened any enthusiasm I have ever had for this. As much as I am a purist when it comes to the soundtrack, I think a Japanese dub (if included on the discs) would make the film a hell of a lot more tolerable as I absolutely cannot stand the practice of Hollywood A-listers being cast in animated roles (in their everyday voices) in lieu of actual voice talent.
@TJM Thanks for the tip!
@Spoony_Tech Was it good? We (the family) are hitting the theater in a little over an hour.
It was a decent little movie, basically the 3DS game given Hollywood-level stakes, but it could have benefitted from being a bit longer. Maybe 2 hrs 15 minutes.
I hope it makes lots more money. I took just about my whole family to watch it yesterday, from my Mom to my nieces and we all loved it. I can't remember the last time that happened.
@gameboy1975 I'm super excited for Godzilla. Looks to be a lot more action packed and atmospheric than the Gareth Edwards film.
Also looking forward to that crossover with the rebooted Kong.
I won't get to see this until next weekend. Glad it seems to be doing pretty well!
I'm excited for it. My brother in law and I are coordinating a day with the kids next weekend to see it.
@Ralizah I'd say good not great. I think my expectations might have been through the roof. Not sure why. The world looks absolutely stunning though.
It was good, but not great. I still like the first MORTAL KOMBAT and DOA better.
PokéCinéUni incoming then?
Saw it with the kids on Friday here in Australia. Although the story is typical Pokemon / kids movie level, the movie was pretty good .. it was quite funny and some scenes were amazing. Even my wife enjoyed it, and the kids loved it.
Apart from the CG this looked to be a budget movie, and they were expecting budget results. Sounds like it's going to do at least a few hundred million worldwide ... So hopefully they will spend more and make a better movie next time.
There is easily enough scope with Pokemon to create an entire universe out of it - the live action / CG is what made it.
I would give the movie a 7/10 ... It doesn't really hold you after it's done, but it's a great candy movie and an alternative to just watching a random animated movie.
@BensonUii Prince of Persia was just some mediocre adventure flick that has nothing special going for it, outside of it being made by Disney. And Warcraft, while it is technically fine (at least with the orc's since they are the best part of the film, the human characters were terrible), it requires you to understand a whole lot of World of Warcraft lore in order to actually get the most out of it unlike Detective Pikachu, where it is much more accessible.
Excellent. It is always great to see more people enjoy this adaptation of the gaming medium.
@Silly_G This guy right'ere
i thought the film succeeded in spite of itself—the pokemon and the worldbuilding were great for the most part, but the narrative was sloppy and the characters moronic even by hollywood standards.
I found the film to be a bit mediocre. Enjoyable enough, but the acting was stiff and the script was iffy. I mean, it's aimed at kids so fair enough, but I was expecting a bit more from it.
Pokemon is the movie to see..plus it's better than anything marvel..I hate marvel so this new pokemon movie sounds cool
@gameboy1975 knob washing.
I really enjoyed it and I'm not even a Pokemon fan.
I work next to a movie theater. I saw a lot of kids carrying Pikachu plushes into the theater, really made me smile. I'll be seeing it sometime this week.
The first twenty minutes felt like an hour. Really slow to start, but once it picks up, it's a fun ride.
Not much of a Pokemon fan besides loving Pikachu, and I really enjoyed this movie! The writing could be a bit better—Lucy's integration feels a bit off and some of Detective Pikachu's funniest lines from the trailers are quietly rushed—but the CG and story is just a good time. If you don't like Pokemon at all though I could see you not liking this movie, though you would at least find it better than anything Illumination has produced... Poor Mario movie.
@Malcrash Don't mind him. He's just trying to look more intelligent than he is.
Does that include animated films? I'd like to see how it compared to the animated Pokemon movies
Just finished it.
At last, the Bad Video Game Movie Curse is lifted.
@Sandro89 If you read the negative critics, they are all people that don´t know the Pokemon franchise and expected an hour intro explaining every single Pokemon or a film full of Pokemon battles (boring). /shrug
I went to see it with my 7 year old son and his friend and both of them were fully glued to the screen. I have never seen my son being so focussed onto the cinema screen before.
They enjoyed it immensely and couldn´t stop talking about it after.
I my opinion, that means success! I enjoyed the movie myself as well. It was very well made. Good acting and great story with suprising emotional twist in the end.
@deafswin37 Better than Marvel? Geez, did you even SEE Endgame? Sure, this movie broke the "bad video game movie" curse, but Endgame was on a whole different level.
Will wait until is comes out on Sky TV, as with Endgame.
I find the Avengers movies have got a bit too stupidly over the top, with too much action going on at the same time, so not sure what to look at.
But at least Detective Pikachu is a bit different to any film that has come out.
@MegaVel91 : The fact that you feel compelled to be repeatedly rude and disrespectful about the mere fact that someone has an opinion different to your own speaks volumes of your own degree of maturity.
Rather than addressing anything I have said, you respond with hostile namecalling.
Grow up.
@Sandro89 I like ditto 😁. Just know it's more mystery and family than fighting.
Spot on movie. Well worth a view, saw it with a group of friends over the weekend and we loved it (was a sellout 2pm showing on the Saturday)
Probably not going to make it out to the cinema to see it unfortunately, but really looking forward to catching this when it's out on disc.
My biggest complaint with the movie is that it probably needed slightly more runtime. The pacing was all wrong. The intro to the city and the main human characters felt incredibly rushed, and Lucy's intro actually makes her seem kinda insane?
The villian's plot at the end was also pretty dumb, although I will admit it was unique. I just would have more preferred something that would have struck an emotional chord. It was more of a, "uh... okay? That's cool, I guess" kind of twist.
Everything else was great, though. The style was very Pokemon, right down to how the characters dressed and the location designs. To me, it actually felt like a mainline Pokemon game more than a spin off.
Going to see this next weekend can’t wait!
I enjoyed it not the best movie, but a good movie overall. Still one of the best video game adaptations out there yet.
@Nekonokatzen The current runtime is already 1h44m.
It's a kids movie, so they had to compromise a little to keep the total runtime under 2 hours or it would have been too long.
@TheAwesomeBowser Nope as i don't do marvel and never will..I stop watching marvel when Disney took over and don't miss them..But heck if you enjoy them more power to ya and i hate marvel and always will
@Jeronan I realize that ~90min is considered the butter zone for most kid's movies, but I think that needs to be reconsidered. I know so many people whose kids are obsessed with the Marvel movies, and most of those are 2hr+. If it's good and engrossing, they'll glue themselves to it.
Actually, I have to wonder... so many movies now seem to have trouble being fully coherent with shorter run times. Yet I don't remember that being as much of an issue when I was a kid in the 80s/90s. I wonder what happened?
@deafswin37 A friendly reminder that Endgame was the film that scored a 95% Tomatometer, not this film. But HEY, whatever makes you sleep at night!
@TheAwesomeBowser A friendly reminder that the Difference is marvel is total garbage..but whatever give you that jerk at night lol Bye Bye
@TheAwesomeBowser Also i hate marvel bad enough that it is not allowed in my house and never will..Thanks buttercup but DC is far better and less flops hahahahaha bye
@deafswin37 Why am I even wasting my time here? This is nothing but a lost cause. Bye Felicia!
@TheAwesomeBowser Bye Felicia! Go eat a soap bar as you wait. Blocked Bye bye Felicia who ever that is maybe you thanks
@deafswin37 ???
@TheAwesomeBowser Again Bla Ba Bla goodbye Felica as i muted you thanks
