I really don't like the idea of having to pay extra to play online, regardless of how good the online play is in different games. I still pay of course, because there is no alternative and it's not much money to me. But I understand there are people who can't afford it. When it comes to the NES and SNES games, I think it's a cool thing to have, but if they would have added GBA and/or N64 games it would have been worth the online price just for the retro games.
@Yosher I kind of agree, but it was just a bunch of skins, so I just take it for what it is - a way to make money out of those people who don't care about money. Or maybe more like a t-shirt or a coffee mug that I choose to not order. Either way, as long as it's no real content, I just forget it was even there in the first place. But in principle, you're not wrong.
It depends. If I find out the way to cheese the game myself, I feel clever and I deserve the victory. If someone else tells me how to cheese it, it feels like cheating.
@stinky_t The attention given to the game by having it discounted will increase sales, regardless of how large the discount is. Of course, a really good deal will sell even more.
@stevep You are right, but as long as we can recalibrate with the push of a button, like in Skyward Sword, it could work all right. At least better than stick controls. But yeah, it would have been really cool if they released a sensor bar with it. I doubt the IR camera in the joycon is good enough to be usable, but if they can release the sensor bar (which they won't), they can release a light gun with it.
@Ganner I agree with most of what you say. There are a lot of changes that don't appeal to me personally, both in removing mechanics outside of fights (such as having to find the monster or use an armour skill for that), and making the fights more similar to other action games, but there are as many things that are really good improvements. And of course, Capcom understands that this playstyle is much more popular, so these changes are here to stay. I just wish more of the changes were optional, like the palamutes. Never liked World, mainly because of the lack of atmosphere, but Rise is really good.
@Mr-Fuggles777 Well, the Wii U ports aren't really intended for us who played the games on the Wii U. And when it comes to pricing, well... that's just market economics for you. It's not like it's cheaper on other consoles because the companies want to be nice to the customers - they have just calculated that this is the pricing that nets the highest profit for them.
@Yosher You're right, you should choose depending on what you're looking for. But in general, you often (not always) get two rewards instead of three when capturing.
@Yosher You get more rewards for slaying than for capping, and some materials can't be obtained without carving, so in general, slaying is better. Capping can shave off some time from the quest though, so It's a trade-off.
It's a fantastic game. At first there was something about the pacing that I didn't like, the action felt rushed and stressed compared to the old games, but as soon as I stopped using the palamute, everything clicked. There are still a couple of choices I disagree with (especially the armour system from World), but in total this is a major step up from World.
@Kalmaro They have definitely focused on just fighting the monsters, so if that is what you like, I'm happy for you. I don't really get the idea of something just solving a problem the developers put there in the first place. I mean, that's true for most content in all games. Killing a monster is also just solving a problem that the developers caused.
@Kalmaro I mean, as game mechanics, the hot and cold drinks are sort of pointless, as long as you don't forget to bring them. But it makes the cold and hot environments feel hostile, which was a very good feature of the old games. Plus, before you learn to bring drinks, it actually is a thing. Now, the icy map is more or less just a white skin of a sandy map. As for the paintball, the point is you get that suspension in the beginning of a quest, where you don't know what to expect around the corner. And when another monster intruded, that would come as a total surprise! Sure, the actual paintball mechanic is a little unnecessary, it would have been fine if the monster would show up on the map after your first encounter during that quest. Anyway, I just think these changes make the game less dynamic and takes away atmosphere.
@NEStalgia Those are very good points. I suppose for a newcomer to the series it would have been extremely complex if they would have kept every little thing they added over the years. Ah well, let's just say I don't agree with all of the decisions they made.
@Kalmaro I just meant that viewing the stripping away of game mechanics as "quality of life" improvements is a little strange. One example (of many) of a true QoL improvement they made in Rise is the inclusion of a list of monster parts, after you have found them, and how to obtain them. You no longer have to go to kiranico.com to look up how to obtain a nargacuga marrow, it's right there in the menu. Lovely! On the other hand, they removed the fun in observing the monster to know when to capture it, and straight up included a little symbol telling you that it's time. That's not innovative, just dull. MHRise is a mixed bag of wonderful improvements and questionable decisions to remove interesting and fun game mechanics.
A lot of the "quality of life" changes are just removals of fun game mechanics. Sure, it's easier if you can see the monsters on the map all the time, but it's less fun, and if that was the best way to play the game, they could have done so in the earlier games also. These changes are not there because the designers came up with clever new ideas, but they have just stripped away clever ideas from the past.
But there are of course tons of changes in Rise that are actual improvements, and it is a fantastic game, so I shouldn't be too negative. I really love this game.
@teko I think the riding and sharpening takes away some of the tension in a fight, like you can just pause the action any time. But I don't mind them putting it in the game, since it's optional. I can just go on quests with two palicoes instead. Overall the game is a bit too simplified for my taste, apart from the actual fighting which is really good. The focus on speed with the wirebugs also make the slower weapons like great sword and hammer stand out more, which is a very good thing. It's obvious they are trying to make it more like any other action game, which of course is a little sad, but I understand this is the future of the series since World sold so well.
Have played a few hours of it now. It's great, of course, just like most of the games in the series. I think the worst change from earlier games is that you see the monsters on the map all the time. Searching for the monster in the beginning of a quest added suspension, and gave the games a much better pace. Now it's just start the quest, run (or even ride) to the monster and fight, fight, fight. That, together with the stupid armour skill system from World makes it a little duller than it could have been. Most of the other changes are definitely for the better, so this is still a fantastic Monster Hunter game. 10/10.
BIT.TRIP Beat is a really good game, but I can't understand why they changed the rotational axis for the controls. The Wii controls were perfect, now it's slightly awkward. Still very much recommended though.
SMTIV ftw! Oh, and I still need to get myself together and do the final boss of Strange Journey! Does anyone have a tip for that? Doing a neutral run and the final boss is all I have left.
@E1000 Because I can lend the cartridge to a friend and because unless you have a very small collection of games, you'll need a large, expensive SD card. I wouldn't be anywhere near able to fit all my games on a 1 TB card. It's 2021, not 2017 when we only had the launch games to choose from.
Ah, the account is of course deleted, because of inactivity for over 90 days... But if I can find my old files on the old hard drive and use them... I'll probably have to get this game!
I love spiders and this is kind of provocative to me, mainly because there are actually people who think it's OK to kill spiders. If it was a game about killing, say, kittens, I would have thought nothing of it, because everyone loves kittens, right? The same with killing people; everybody knows it's wrong to kill people, so doing it in a game is just fun.
@jump I just started playing it on Switch. It looks pretty bad in handheld, but docked it's decent. I mean, sometimes it looks like a Gamecube game, but more open and with better looking faces on NPC's. Very much playable, but not as beautiful as on PC. It's a fun space RPG with great writing, so if you're interested and don't have other platforms to play it on, it's definitely recommended.
