Update 2 (Tue 11th May, 2021 14:15 BST): Finally, two whole months after the game's initial release, we now have confirmation that a physical version of Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time is set to arrive in Europe.
Reliable UK retailer The Game Collection has started to take pre-orders for the title, with a retail release date of 28th May being set. Hopefully more retailers across the UK and Europe will soon follow suit.
Update 1 (Sat 13th Mar, 2021 12:45 GMT): We've received a response from the game's publisher, Activision, and it seems the European physical version of Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time may be in a spot of doubt.
Here's Activision's statement shared with Nintendo Life on 12th March. As you can see, a physical version of the game hasn't been ruled out for Europe, but the publisher's decision to avoid answering our questions about its whereabouts is a little worrying:
"We are pleased to celebrate a digital only launch of Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time in EMEA today."
If we hear anything else about this physical release, we'll be sure to let you know. For now, the game is available digitally on the Switch eShop.
Original Article (Fri 12th Mar, 2021 15:30 GMT): Today sees the launch of Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time on Nintendo Switch, the latest entry in Activision and Toys for Bob's popular platforming series, yet the physical version of the game hasn't materialised in stores across Europe.
The new release has launched as expected in North America and Australia, with physical copies readily available at stores and online, but fans in Europe seem to have been left in the cold. We've had a substantial number of readers get in touch today hoping for answers, informing us that they haven't been able to track down a physical copy anywhere.
Indeed, a quick search across the UK's most reliable game stores brings up almost no results. The only listing we stumbled across is at GAME, where the title is still available to pre-order with an odd 'TBC 2021' release date.
In case there's any doubt, It's About Time was supposed to have launched physically today in the region. Nintendo's official site lists the game as a physical release, providing the official box art in the process, and its successful launch across other regions only makes the situation more confusing. The title is available digitally via the Switch eShop as planned.

We've contacted GAME for further clarification on its store listing, as well as the game's publisher Activision for more information on the situation. We'll update this article if we hear back from either.
Make sure to stay tuned if you're hoping to track down a physical copy of this brilliant return to form for the series.

I pre ordered from game and no physical version, not even an email yet to say it's been dispatched.
It's no longer an unusual situation that a physical version of a game arrives later than the digital version, though it's unusual for a high profile release.
The announcement and release of the Switch version all came about pretty quickly though, it seems like Activision prioritised the US market for the physical release.
@RupeeClock Its very unusual when they say it will release March 12th and it doesnt happen, they at no point said physical in europe wouldnt arrive on march 12th
This is sooo much ass! One small condoleance: All the other versions that where supposed to launch today are missing too. All the Europeans get screwed!
I would be very surprised if its still happening: Activision should be ashamed of themselves!
Ah well, I'll buy the digital version someday...but not at full price! I'll wait for a 50% discount. I never pay full price for digital, that's just insane.
Weird it turned out this way considering how high a seller Crash games tend to be in the UK.
@Beatrice yikes, that comment and profile pic synergy...
I sent Activision a message asking, but they haven't replied (shocker, I know!) I've preordered the physical from Amazon US and even with the postage it works out cheaper than the UK eShop lol.
@Henmii bear in mind also that the game is priced 40$ and 50€ too ..
@Henmii I am exactly the same. and exactly like you, I won't even entertain it unless its at least 50% off!!
The game is even 49,99 € digital in Europe, with no physical option. This is just unacceptable
It should be here by now. It’s about time.
£25 on the Russian eshop! (2649rub)
Activision being idiots again......
No physical no buy (sing to bob marley melody)
Yeah, I was wondering about this. I searched through several stores but didn't find it either. Was going to pre-order and all. But I'll get it once it's out, the game looks great!
I have ordered a copy to be imported from Amazon USA... £42 with import and conversion charges - roughly what I’d expect to pay if released natively. Just got a dispatch email, should arrive on March 25th.
I wonder why this is... tho I suspect because Crash is far popular in Europe, they’re expecting people will double dip on a Switch digital/ physical release later down the line.
The game is freaking awesome. They've done a lot to get it working on the Switch. I recommend playing Docked but handheld isn't too bad either, maybe around 540p but it's definitely worth getting it on the Switch unless you're actually measuring and comparing every aspect of it. The very fact that it works on the Switch is awesome. A big hooray for this one.
@Henmii just buy from russian eshop
Im sorry this is wrong. While australia might have a small amount of physicals.. when i went to purchase a copy. 4 stores didnt have any. And i went home pissed off. Still without a copy ... on launch day...
@KnightsTemplar yes!! Australia has very few copies and not even EB Games here is selling it physical at all. They also will not respond to questions when asked why they are not getting the physical copy! It’s a very weird situation?! I had to buy my copy online and it won’t be here until next week.
Would have got the physical but couldn't be bothered waiting so just downloaded it
Delayed until June
I ordered from play Asia and it’s still saying pending stock 😭
Same's happening in Australia with Plants vs Zombies, so it's not mutually exclusive to this one.
I ordered it yesterday from Amazon USA for 48,30 €, including shipping and customs duty (allegedly)... Still cheaper than the non-existant European edition! It takes like a month to arrive and I hope there isn't any troubles, because it's the first time I import a game (or anything else, for that matter).
I'm dissapointed with Activision. The least they could do is to publish a press note explaining the situation.
I’ll wait for the physical if it ever happens
Not gonna lie, that statement sounds like a joke.
Almost glad I’m importing my copy from the US (with fees it was still cheaper than the UK eShop!)
Still, pretty shady of them and very naive of them if they don’t think it’ll massively effect sales here
They should get one sooner or later right, Right?
Probably because it would ship on a 16GB cart. And 16GB carts would eat into their profit margins. So nada.
@E1000 Why is it important to you if people want to buy physical or not? It makes no difference to you. People have different reasons why they buy physical. Some don’t trust digital games to be always available in the future. Some just like physical presence they can look at and have for collecting purposes and some have crap internet making digital a no go.
@Henmii https://www.ozgameshop.com/search/crash+bandicoot+4 they have the PS4 & Xbox Series X versions. NO SWITCH version though
@popey1980 VERY shady of them to not announce it was digital only in the first place.
@E1000 People like having physical collections, they can sell the game if they don't like it, and physical is often cheaper than digital. What does the year have to do with anything?
@E1000 Idk maybe bc its cheaper and they don't have to buy a whole 150 GB sd card.
That statement sounds like corporate *****... Very upsetting how they are playing with people hopes
@Clyde_Radcliffe I agree which is why I think there going to come out with it sooner or later.
The clue is in the word 'launch'. It's a blatant admission that they're trying to rinse people who want the physical version but can't wait.
Guess i will wait for a decent sale if no physical comes. Its a play then trade game for me, digital offers no resale value so prefer physical.
Wow, celebrate their "digital only" launch?? Ouch. Ridiculous.
@Hellouuu And that's the way to go!
@E1000 For me I play on my pc 99% of the time, if I want digital I'll just play it on there. Digital is nothing new you know? 2021 LOL
I've double dipped on games like nsane and its specifically because I wanted a physical copy too just like I have grown up with physical copies my whole life.
Literally all I buy on switch is physical, if crash 4 gets no physical I'll just buy it on my pc in 2 weeks time when it releases.
If you had to put up with digital only and always online drm on pc for years and years now, you wouldnt be so quick to kill physical off on switch console either.
Rather not have my games tied to servers thank you I have my pc for all that nonsense
The one console that would actually have some sales is the one that will only be digital ... Activision are such stupid people it seems
Over to you Super Rare Games, do us physical buyers in the UK a solid.
Just ordered a copy from Amazon America, they deliver to the UK for free.
@Madder128 just to clarify maybe free only to amazon prime users, the delivery that is.
No physical no buy easy
Amazon UK have the US version in stock by the looks (currently £37.83)
What a bs answer from Activision! Keep the pressure on Nintendolife, we deserve a proper answer!
@BigBluePanda Thanks for telling us man! Just snagged one
No physical no buy. Because no excuse for such a massive publisher.
@Friendly just import it from the usa if it's too big of a deal.
For anyone having an issue with this just import it from the usa. Go to Amazon and find the game there and import it. They'll ship overseas. Nintendo Switch is region free.
@Beatrice it would cost over £60 to import a physical version
Obviously they didn't sell enough of the trilogy on Switch physical to warrant releasing this physical. That is the only logic I can think of as to why it isn't physical.
@E1000 Because I can lend the cartridge to a friend and because unless you have a very small collection of games, you'll need a large, expensive SD card. I wouldn't be anywhere near able to fit all my games on a 1 TB card. It's 2021, not 2017 when we only had the launch games to choose from.
@Enigk last I heard it did very well on switch.
I am pleased to celebrate not buying it.
@cammers1995 15-20 euro extra for shipping. Not really into that for such a big publisher.
I usually do that for indie games on limited run and such. But I didn’t do it for megaman too. Capcom is rich enough too.
This will likely be more common moving forward as games get bigger and larger carts eat further into publishers profit margins.
There isn't even incentive for them to release it on a smaller cart with an additional download, as social media erupts in shouts of boycot and majority of people saying they won't buy it.
@E1000 bye
Until they bring it to Europe too, they'll loose a lot of sales.
Their loss. I'd really like to get this game, but not digitally. I'm not in a hurry.
I'm all for digital, more money goes to the publishers and developers, less to the middle men. However if they announced a physical edition, they should fulfill that commitment.
@TheLightSpirit
"You can't complain about anything because someone else has it much more worse than you."
Good god, I'm so sick to the teeth with this fail logic. I'm sorry that a lot of people have it bad, but in all honesty humans are selfish creatures. We are gonna complain about something big or small in our lives.
@E1000 Oh, I wasn't mad. I was just explaining. Sorry, if it came across as mad. Not my intention at all.
@Beatrice Exactly. I wanted to buy my wife this game but there's no way I'm paying around 45£ for a download of a game that i don't think is worth more than £30.
Looks like it's about time.... to import!
@Boldfoxrd so buy the game for your wife from the Russian eshop for £25 if you really want her to have it.
@kobashi100 Or just simply buy the game for yourself or your wife who cares you want the game you buy the game simple as that
And in case your married and all you should be able to get 60eur or so to spare...
@KnightsTemplar Did you try JB Hi Fi? That's where I bought my copy from.
Hmz quick check amazon sales are 39.99$ even here in LT 39.99Eur i can get it even now can't see the problem
@E1000 how is anyone here being toxic? The only one being toxic is yourself
@E1000 Got it no one can disagree with you.
@kobashi100 and create a Russian account and then have a game that can't be sold after she is done with it. No way.
I'll wait on the physical version.
I'm happy to see that they are pushing digital on Nintendo consoles.
@Boldfoxrd you mentioned you didn't want to pay £45 for digital version. I just simply giving you a cheaper digital price which is cheaper than the £30 you think the game is worth. Now you are complaining about not being able to sell the digital version. And you do not need to create a Russian account by the way. Keep moving them goalposts dude. Lol
@kobashi100 well it's pretty simple. Most people do not want to pay that sort of price for digital games. I'll wait on a physical no matter how long it takes thank you.
@lyle_catcliffe I've been looking at doing the same. Importing from America to UK. Are you in England?
@Samwich90 yeah, England. Initially it said it’ll arrive early May, but within a couple of days I got a dispatch email and an ETA on March 25th.
@lyle_catcliffe I've bit the bullet, I've purchased from amazon. According to my amazon I should get it between 17th and 25th March. We will see. I've never imported a game before, I'm super nervous and worried incase it won't work. 🤦🏼♀️😂
@Samwich90 we’ll be fine - I’ve never imported before either, but Switch is 100% region free 😀
I have a pal who imported the USA Fire Emblem 30th anniversary and the code worked on his Switch. Conversely, someone here sent their friend the Xenoblade Definitive Edition that wasn’t released in the USA and it worked fine.
@lyle_catcliffe @lyle_catcliffe I'm thinking back to childhood when your console was region specific and you couldn't just play any region disk on your console is engraved in my brain and is making me panic about this Switch card! 😂
@Samwich90 Luckily the switch is region free again. I have multiple games from other regions which work fine. And importing with Amazon is s breeze, since they handle all the hassle.
The only possible problem is dlc, for dlc you would have to create a account in that region and download it using that (but it will work on the whole system, except account stuff like virtual currency ).
@tech7 Thanks for the help, you've made me feel alot better and alot less worried about my decision to import! Hope you don't mind me asking but what is DLC? 🤦🏼♀️
DLC is downloadable content. Like for example the new smash characters. But i doubt that crash will have that.
@Amin_Parker Least it saves me money I guess
Just gonna get the game on pc instead of switch and pc
https://twitter.com/HeavyArm_Store/status/1370310163714899968
found this one on twitter. seems that cartridges for an european release already exist and are as of now used for the australian release. maybe as soon as they get new supplies a date will be given or it may get a shadow releases as the "re-release" of the n-sane trilogy on ps4/xbox one.
FINALLY
Got my pre-order in!
It's about time!
I highly recommend this one. Looks amazing for a Switch port.
Yes, there is this weird texture when playing in handheld, but it is not distracting at all and it plays smoothly enough even to notice some downgrade.
Amazing game, super challenging though (I complete it 100% with +70 hours), but never impossible and never unfair.
Best Crash game, and if you loved the previous trilogy, you have to play this one.
There now people can stop hating on the game for this (Plus try it) and maybe get more sale's.
@luxoricious You did it? wow I need to get back into it.
Nice, thanks for updating the article. Been waiting for this
Finally!! Now I'll get it for sure
Pre ordered straight away. It is a bit worrying that no other retailer has this listed yet but TGC have never let me down in the past so i can give them the benefit of the doubt.
Plot twist: it's a code-in-a-box 😉
@Paperboy Is this true?
@the_beaver I guess paperboy is joking.
Great news, I was going to pick this up for my Xbox One X but glad I didn't... Looks like I will get it on Switch instead....
@Ulanda I hope so XD
I was kidding, sorry guys 😅 however,we've seen an awful lot of those things these last months.
Trolololol, just got my American version in the mail today.
@Snatcher I never even got into it despite getting the game because I'm lazy.
Called it:
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/05/so_whats_happened_to_crash_bandicoot_4_its_about_times_physical_version_in_europe#comment6188774
@Giygas_95 LOL I guess we both didn't do it.
Finally I will buy it
@Snatcher I did! Super hard. Those last levels almost took me one day per level to finish them, but it's extremely rewarding.
I couldn't obtain all the time trials reliques though, that's another level of hardness I just cannot get into. But I did managed to get all gold reliques, so that's enough for me (and you only need the basic blue relique to get the 100% score).
@luxoricious Alright, alright, I should get back in tomorrow,.
Good stuff, Activision! Your turn, Bethesda; I don't care if it has to be done through Limited Run Games, just give DOOM Eternal a physical release!
Got the America import from Amazon for under £38 so I’m happy anyway
@KayFiOS : I've already said this a million times. Hold out for the DLC to be released and THEN they will issue a complete physical edition (whether by Bethesda themselves or through LRG). Everybody wins. The game will require a 32GB cartridge anyway, so it would make a lot more sense to hold out for the DLC and include that on the cartridge too.
I would also double-dip on DOOM (2016) if LRG issues a cartridge with the 8GB+ download on the cartridge.
Hi guys, Spanish retailer GAME has also opened preorders for the physical version on Switch:
https://twitter.com/VideojuegosGAME/status/1392034995208921091
I haven't seen it on any other Spanish retailer yet, maybe they'll open preorders during this week.
I have imported it, and it is amazing on Nintendo Switch
It's about time, amirite?
I already imported it from USA but I'd have prefered the European version because the text align is different in both versions (yeah I know, OCD much?). If they have released all the versions together... still, f*ck Activision.
Is this only sold on Amazon? Can't find it in any ordinary store in my home country.
