Holiday 2024 makes sense. They could of course keep going for another year or more beyond that with price cuts and more games but I doubt they have more Switch games in the pipeline past 2024.
Just do a $350 (or maybe a cheaper ~$330 base version and a premium ~$380 version at launch) generational leap over the Switch, launching holiday next year, thats the exact same concept/design as the Switch but with iterative improvements to refine the design to near-perfection, call it the Switch 2, don't do anything crazy just straight upgrade. Make joycons slightly larger / slightly better, make sure they don't have joystick drift, and make the physical rail connection between the joycons and the system stronger. Launch it with an amazing new 3D Mario day 1 with Mario Kart 9 coming out a few weeks later, maybe Metroid Prime 4 (if it doesn't come out on Switch) also in the launch time frame. Have NSO running on it from day 1, have a totally improved and redone online setup in which friend codes are finally dead so that people can use actual readable usernames and you can actually communicate with friends online through the system and in-game with audio, and all online games have really easy way to play with friends, random matchmaking, and random matchmaking plus friends at the same time. Use DLSS tech to get current gen console ports without the graphical downgrading such ports required on the Switch (by knocking framerate down to 30, knocking res from console 4k down to under 540p and then using DLSS to bump it back up on the cheap to like 720p in handheld or 900p/1080p docked). Have full backwards compatibility with the Switch. Still have decent battery life have at least 128gb disk space. Heck maybe even announce on launch day that Gamecube games will get added to NSO in the first 12 months.
Do that, which is all pretty common sense, and Switch 2 will continue Switch's success. 60fps games don't matter and really should absolutely not be a priority for a handheld system. 4k doesn't matter at all, maaaybe with DLSS 4k could be possible but shouldn't be a priority. 4k in docked mode would be a nice marketing line though, but if it is gonna make the system too expensive it isn't necessary. They can always release a slightly more powerful upgrade model later in the gen that can do 4k.
@nintendr0ne eh, 30 frames or 60 frames doesn't really matter. For 95% of games 30fps is perfect. 60 looks slightly smoother and you only really notice it in something like a first person shooter where you pan the camera around a lot because panning the camera does indeed look silky smooth at 60fps but at 30fps it just looks fine.
Doing 60fps on all games on a handheld system is just a waste of resources. Only fast paced games like racers or first person shooters with all the camera panning need 60fps. They just need to make sure all games are locked at 30fps next gen so you don't get the occasional slowdown like you see on some Switch games where they tried to push graphics and stuff too much.
Like the new design. Was expecting a 2D Mario game before the Switch's time is up, and was expecting Nintendo to put the stale "New" series out to pasture, so I'm glad to see Mario Wonder.
It kinda gives some of the feel of the "New" in how I feel like it probably controls based on the video, and the focus on four player looks similar but with the totally new art style and totally new wild stuff going on in the game this should be a nice refresh for 2D Mario.
Just looking at the graphics and especially the animation, this is what a modern 2D Mario game should look like. Looks soooo much better and more lively and with much more personality than the "New" series.
My only concern is I feel like it'll be geared more toward the easy spectrum, for kids. I prefer the tighter controls and harder platforming of the old school 2D Mario games. And it's got all the little comment/speech bubbles which just feels to me like they're saying this game's focus is kids. I'm worried even though the look and gameplay concepts in Wonder are totally different, its gonna FEEL similar to the 'New' games if the controls are the same and if its geared more toward kids and being great in multiplayer co-op but just okay in one-player. Like playing through NSBMUD single player was just okay, but the one time I played with someone else it was a blast.
Anyway, I'll likely use my second Voucher for this so I'll find out in four months! Hoping it turns out great, has tighter controls, and some difficulty!
The idea of only playing BotW for 50 hours and feeling like you'd 'beat' the game lol. At 50 hours you will have barely scratched the surface. Even that 188 hours 100% number is so short.
I'm at 90+ hours, one divine beast defeated (might be hitting up a second soon) and still have a large portion of the map I haven't even touched, and a good bit more of the map I have quickly gone through but haven't really 'explored' and I've gone through just under half the shrines and I think I'm getting close to 200 Korok seeds. Not that I plan on 100%'ing the game, but I figure I'll work on actually beating the game once I feel I have fully explored the world.
I figure I've got a least another 100 hours until I've explored the whole world and beaten the divine beasts along the way and done the things that come with fully exploring the world and really gotten the full experience of the game. So I expect to beat the game I'll be at over 200 hours, without bothering to 100% it, but with bothering to get the full game experience. I don't plan on searching for every shrine though I figure I'd at least like to get 100 of them, and definitely have no interest in getting every korok seed but I figure I'll probably end up with like half of them as I continue exploring.
BotW feels like a 200-300 hours game. 200 hours if you just want to get the full game experience but don't care about 100%'ing, 300+ hours if you actually want to do every little thing (which means you're likely following a guide once you get late into the 100% so you're not searching around endlessly for those last few shrines or those last 100 Korok seeds haha). Anything under 100 hours and you missed the game haha. Anything under 150 hours and you didn't get the full experience.
And this is said as someone who has only played a handful of games to 200 hours in my entire life, and I've never spent 200 hours, or even 100 hours, on a single player story game before. But BotW demands that sort of play time to get through the whole game (and it's a blast playing it the whole time)! So even at under 100 hours right now BotW is already my longest played 'single player story' game ever, and I'm still definitely in the first half of my playthrough.
@Banjo- I haven't started playing TotK yet, and have avoided reading much about it. So I don't know what changes TotK made over BotW. I mean I definitely missed dungeons in BotW. But the old Zelda formula was basically explore and do quests for people and learn where to go and pick up weapons and items and hearts and advance the story, go to dungeon and do the same thing in each dungeon while solving puzzles and fight boss, and repeat until you collect whatever important items you need to go to the end of the game.
If TotK doesn't have dungeons either then I agree they need to bring those back, but other than that I don't see what would be missing.
In the open world Zeldas you still explore, solve puzzles, fight enemies, talk to people, do quests for people, build up your items/weapons/hearts, get your horse, and advance the story as you do these things. The new Zeldas just open it all up exponentially with a huge world and much more freedom, much less linearity. Other than missing dungeons, I'd say BotW felt different because of the massive open world (which is obviously a huge upgrade to all previous Zelda games) and that it added in new things. I don't think it's bad that the new Zeldas are adding in new stuff, that doesn't get rid of all the old Zelda stuff they have.
My only gripe with BotW in terms of missing old Zelda formula was lack of dungeons. The lack of linearity is a great thing. The huge open world to explore is a great thing. And I'm sure dungeons can be made to feel like classic Zelda while still respecting the freedom of open world Zelda. Other issues with BotW were non-zelda specific - I'd say lack of enemy diversity and a bit lack of content in the huge world, other than that it was just nit-picky things. From what I understand TotK is supposed to have way more content in the game, which makes sense considering it took them so long to make it I bet a lot of the development time was adding more content to the massive world.
It would seem the lack of sticking with Zeldas roots really is just about (other than dungeon changes) lacking linearity and offering a much larger world to explore freely. I can't see how anyone would say that's a bad thing. Sure more guided linear games can be nice to play. I think it worked a lot better with 2D Zelda though. A epic fantasy adventure in 3D...that's the kind of thing where you want to go off and just explore. That's something that old 3D Zeldas sorta did, like OOT it felt like you had a big world to explore, back at the dawn of 3D, but as the generations passed Zelda lost a lot of traction to other games that expanded the action-adventure genre. Zelda didn't take back the prime position in the genre until it went open world with BotW, blowing away the restrictions of the previous Zeldas.
Okay, that was way too long of a post. My point is just that it still feels like Zelda, its just way better and bigger. If TotK doesn't have dungeons then sure that is a respectable gripe. But as is obvious from the praise and sales of BotW and TotK, its a pretty narrow band of people who want Zelda to backtrack to smaller, more linear, more confined, less freedom, less adventure oriented games. Open world design was the logical progression of the series, no reason to be sad about it.
I get that some people like the old Zelda formula, we each have our preferences. The old Zelda is comfortable, it's very familiar and it produced great games. Heck I just played Link's Awakening for the first time this year and it was great and I enjoyed the classic Zelda formula in it (as well as the game's unique things).
But quite frankly, in terms of 3D Zelda, by Twilight Princess way back in 2006 I was already like ughhh Zelda is feeling stale and needs a fresh take. It took over 10 years for that to happen and open world Zelda blows away all previous Zeldas. BotW certainly was missing some Zelda staples and while it is a mind blowing game it wasn't perfect, but it sounds like TotK has gone a long way to fix most of the the issues that BotW had.
Zelda is an epic action adventure series, it's the kind of series that is made to be open world. The original 3D formula for Zelda worked great when 3D gaming was still in its fairly early stages, and Nintendo did try to switch things up a lot with every game, but still the formula was too limiting for the Zelda franchise. Then BotW comes out and blows everyone away who isn't just rigidly stuck in wanting the same thing over and over and over out of Zelda.
And the great thing about open world is they can do anything they want with it in the future. Basically there is no formula so it won't get old. They can totally change it open, just keeping the basic open-worldness the same. Of course TotK being a direct sequel was very similar, but the next Zelda can be totally different. All it needs to do is keep the Zelda feel and some Zelda staples and keep the ability to explore a massive world freely.
At first I was rankled about the $70 price tag (though I got it for $50 using Nintendo Vouchers), but open world Zelda has become pretty much the best series in gaming, and you get like 150-200+ hours of gameplay for an initial playthrough, I'm okay if they charge $70 from now on for these mind blowing behemoth Zelda games.
I'd worry if they started charging $70 for other games (I mean maybe 3D Mario would be okay but that's it). With the size of these open world Zelda games it clearly is the most expensive to develop series they make now so if there was gonna be any game for which they charge a premium price it would be Zelda.
I'm already thinking about how cool next-gen open world Zelda is gonna be - next gen upgrades and built from scratch instead of being a direct sequel in the same map as BotW. Though I'm sure that's like 7 years away. Only bad thing about how colossal Zelda games are now is how long they are gonna take to make. Given how long it took to make TotK despite being a direct sequel to BotW are reusing so much of BotW, Nintendo better be adding a lot more people to the Zelda team in order to make sure they can put out one 3D Zelda each generation.
I expected 10m, so not surprised. After Pokemon sold 10m opening weekend, and there is much more hype around the sequel to the legendary BotW than there was for simply the next mainline Pokemon game (which was also very buggy at launch), I woulda been surprised if TotK didn't sell 10m or at least very close to it opening weekend.
Though the Japan sales at two and a quarter million are crazy! I figured it would sell a million less in Japan and a million more in America. Japanese total sales of TotK opening weekend have already matched BotW physical copies only sales. Meaning with a few more weeks of sales TotK may actually pass BotW sales in Japan unless like everybody who wanted the game in Japan bought it opening weekend haha.
Still, even though I expected these sorts of numbers opening weekend, it really is amazing to think about how much Nintendo has opened up the Zelda series with these two games. Zelda was always a very well received series but just with good not incredible sales considering the pedigree of the franchise. The best selling games would manage high single digit millions. Now, by making the Zelda formula open world and pushing the boundaries on that genre they've got another massive selling series to go along with Mario, Mario Kart, Smash, Pokemon, and Animal Crossing (though to be fair I think the pandemic gave AC a one-off huge boost so not sure if we could include it in this list in the future).
Obviously a Zelda movie, or more likely a trilogy of Zelda movies, needs to be made. Though I imagine it'll be a good few years before we get one. Probably gonna get a DK movie and a Mario sequel first.
But the crucial thing about a Zelda movie is that it needs to be live action. Animation fits for Mario, but isn't that interesting for Zelda.
Epic fantasy live action movies and tv shows are all the rage and Zelda fits perfectly into that. I could see an excellently done Zelda live-action movie (think LotR but Zelda!) easily doing a billion dollars at the box office like Mario. Then follow it up with two sequels, and a spinoff Princess Zelda tv show with the actress from the movies.
Well we definitely need Zelda WW and TP on Switch. Just need the HD versions, no need for a significant remaster.
Obviously Prime 2 and 3 are rumored to also be coming.
I'd then say Eternal Darkness remake or at least full graphical remaster like Prime got. That game was nuts and an update to modern graphics would really help it out the sense of horror.
I'd love an Fzero GX remaster since its clear no new Fzero is coming anytime soon.
For third party games would love a Rogue Squadron 2 remaster, that was one of the best GC games and one of the best Star Wars games.
Getting all 7 of those on Switch in the near future before Switch is replaced would be epic.
I own 18 of those out of the 54 Switch games I have. There's another about 8-12 on the list that I plan on getting eventually. I plan on trying out the Xenoblade series at some point so if I get into those I'll eventually have 9 of the top 10 (only Persona I have no plans to get).
Surprised to see no Dead Cells. That's probably my fourth favorite Switch game behind only BotW, Smash, and Odyssey. With Dread being my number 5.
Between amazing new first party games, Wii U ports, ports of older Nintendo games and from Playstation/Xbox systems, indies, and even a few new AAA third party games, the Switch lineup is truly incredible. Especially with all the systems on NSO, its definitely the ultimate Nintendo system / portable system ever.
I wonder if Zelda TotK will end up taking the top spot on this list when they update it.
I'm getting back in Prime since remastered came out. I had the original on GC but only played part way into it.
Prime is great, I'm still early in the game, but so far I'm thinking it's no Dread. Dread blew me away. Though Prime still has plenty of time to do the same since I'm early in the game. But I'm feeling like I'd put Dread as the best Metroid game, and then Super and Prime as 2 and 3.
Objectively probably MK8D is the best Mario Kart with online play, tons of characters and courses (especially with the incoming 48 DLC courses), which would make Double Dash the 2nd best. But subjectively I've gotta give it to Double Dash.
As some of the people in the article said, your favorite Mario Kart is probably the one you played the most, and Double Dash was during college for me and we played the hell out of it. It very likely is the video game I've played the most in my life.
I remember when it first came out everyone was saying 64 was better, but over time that changed as you go back and play 64 after falling in love with DD and you realize 64 doesn't hold a candle to DD. MK Wii was a fine game but it just didn't have the spirit of DD. MK8D obviously dominates in terms of quantity of content but I've never had nearly as much fun playing 8D as I have DD, though granted I'm old now lol and have mostly just played 8D alone or a little bit online and a few times with friends, whereas DD literally spent hundreds of hours playing 4-player in college and a lot playing 2-player as well with a roommate post-college.
Also in DD you could like custom choose your cup size so you could do all 16 courses as one mega cup which was very cool for an ultimate showdown with your friends. The courses were fantastic in DD. And the two-character karts concept was great. While I doubt very many people actually played two people per kart (we sure the hell didn't cuz who wants to only be in charge of weapons?!), it allowed switching between items and also due to the character specific super items it gave the game more strategy than any other MK game has ever had.
Speaking of which, the character specific super items were so cool and it is a travesty that concept was dropped after DD as all the later Mario Karts feel like they are lacking something without it. Other than the idea of bringing back a bunch of old MK tracks in the more recent games, character specific super items combined with switching between two characters on a kart was definitely the coolest addition to MK.
In terms of innovation DD blows 8D out of the water as I think the only thing 8D introduced was anti-gravity parts which don't really do much to add anything to the game. The double characters and character specials of DD is the best gameplay innovation any single MK has had. Honestly the main reason why 8D is probably objectively better is because it has 48 (now 96) courses as opposed to DD's 16. But I'd rather play through all 16 courses on DD than any 16 courses on 8D.
For me personally Double Dash is definitely #1 of all time, with MK8D in second. MK64 is third for how good it was at the time but that game has not aged well with the odd looking character sprites, the pretty uninteresting courses compared to later games courses, and the now very weird feeling controls.
I've been waiting for golf to finally come out to get the game but at this point the excitement has kind of waned. Totally bizarre that they're releasing unfinished games. Especially made a habit of this on the sports titles for Switch.
The game should have been complete at launch with soccer totally ready and golf in there. If they then added a couple more sports later on as free DLC that would have been nice but instead they're just finally putting out the entire launch game half a year after launch lol.
I don't get the lack of effort. They've been making money by the cartload for the past 5 years why not just hire a few more people on these teams so that they can actually release full games at launch.
Maybe I'll get it if it goes on sale at some point or when I visit family sometime next year.
Ha lots of commenters giving this guy hate. Its a cool effort but the title shouldn't have compared it to Link's Awakening. Because of the title you go into watching the video expecting it to have really slick and awesome graphics like Link's Awakening remake but it doesn't at all.
Oh that's cool I didn't realize this game was coming so soon. If it runs well and if the game is actually like considered good now after all the updates I might get this at some point on Switch.
On a side note I think it's funny some commenters on here are saying this game on Switch somehow means a new Switch is coming. They're literally putting this game on the current models of Switch, not some theoretical "pro" version and not Switch 2 which is still likely 2 to 2.5 years out. People desperately hoping for a new Nintendo model or system to buy just making up reasons to think it's going to happen soon lol
Oh wow yeah this game immediately jumps out at you as a very Dread-like game. Extreme Dread vibes for sure. But that ain't bad. Game looks awesome. I don't mind playing a Dread-copy as long as it plays well.
I mean obviously the game is still coming out. The game is all done, considering that they delayed it just like a month or something before it was supposed to come out.
They're just sitting on the finished game for half a year now waiting for the Ukraine war to be over. Which is the most bizarre decision considering it's a cartoony war game and there have been plenty of highly realistic war games that have come out during other wars lol. Basically once the Ukraine war is over Nintendo will announce that it is launching. So hopefully for both Ukraine and Europe in general and Nintendo gamers, it'll launch sometime next year.
Not releasing a cartoon war game just because a new war happened in a part of the world makes no sense. No video game company has ever had a problem releasing the tons of realistic war games over the years despite wars going on all the time.
They should have just released it on schedule. Hopefully they'll schedule a release date soon because it makes no sense to continue to hold it off.
Game sounds fun but lacking content. What is with Nintendo and sports games...all their sports games come out lacking a lot of content. Such a bizarre pattern.
Golf had to have numerous updates to add content and even then a couple changes could have very much improved the game. Switch Sports has to wait on a soccer update and golf being added 6 months later and doesn't have boxing which most people seem to want (instead has two similar sports in Tennis and Badminton). I think Aces also had to have some content updates unless I'm remembering incorrectly.
So the question is, are they going to have some free content upgrades for Strikers or is the package complete.
@JakedaArbok i think the problem with the New series is that it feels very stale at this point. I was very disappointed in NSMBUD despite the fact that i had only ever played the Wii game at a friend's house a little bit back in the day. Its a port of the fourth game in the series. It just feels really stale and uninspired.
The only times Mario has ever even had two similar games before were the original and SMB2 (japan release only), and Galaxy 1 and 2. Four games and a port for the New series is just lazy. 2D Mario desperately needs a new style game, the New series is dead from a innovation pov.
The DS and Wii games brought back 2D Mario and it felt fresh and great, they should have stopped there and then done something different for 3DS and U. Now that we're on the Switch 2D Mario soooooo needs a new take on the formula. Like imagine if on the Wii U you were playing Super Mario Sunshine 4... that's the situation the New series is. It is boring and mediocre at this point, and hopefully Nintendo is far along in development on a completely fresh take on 2D Mario right now
@HarvestGoddess yes when the Switch was first announced I figured that would mean we'd be getting both 2D and 3D zeldas on the hybrid systems now. And even more so after the gorgeous looking LA remake. It'd be criminal if they don't come out with a new 2D Zelda on the switch. I gotta think they have a topdown Zelda in the works right now.
Looks great. Just please for the love of god let the player move the character in Tennis! Wii sports handicapped tennis so bad by not allowing you to control the player. I'm worried tennis in switch sports is also gonna be nerfed by the same decision.
And it better have the training modes for each sport like the original did. I played the heck out of those golf training modes.
If they do things right this game could be amazing: Tennis character control, fun training modes, more than 9 holes of golf, and ideally add in boxing as an extra update after golf (though unfortunately I doubt it).
Yes first thing I thought after I saw BotW2 is delayed is that TP/WW HD double pack better be coming this year.
Hell even if they just make it a holiday title to replace BotW2's holiday spot that'd be fine, as long as it is coming this year. It's the most obvious port needed at this point. I'm pretty dang sure HD WW/TP pack would be a 10+ million seller.
Of course there doesnt need to be a new Zelda every year (and furthermore there shouldn't be!) but Nintendo is just getting all its great older games out on Switch, which is fantastic. 2022 WW/TP, 2023 BotW2, 2024 I'd like to see a new 2D zelda with LA remake style graphics. Then assuming Switch 2 releases 2025 I wouldn't expect another Zelda for the first few years next gen as they work on new next gen 2D and 3D zeldas.
I think the most important thing they can do is yeah be transparent about what is coming and when. When is GB coming? When is GBA coming? What are the lineups for N64 and Genesis? Do they have plans for more NES and SNES games, as those have stopped ever since the expansion pack came out? Just answering those questions would go a long way so that consumers know what the plan is.
As far as Gamecube games I think it would be great to add that once Switch 2 comes out in a handful of years. During Switch's lifecycle just fill out the Nes, Snes, N64, Genesis, GB, and GBA libraries.
The prices of the subscriptions are great, N64 emulation has been fixed so that's good, there's just a complete lack of clarity on what and when is stuff coming.
Also it'd be nice to get more free new games, like say one every 6 months would be fine. Start by adding back Mario 35 because it made no sense to make that game and offer it only to take it away after half a year. Tetris 99 and Pacman 99 are both fantastic. Keep adding new games occasionally to keep thing interesting. Perfectly fine if they're simple games as long as they're fun.
The main problem people have is that they never know when new systems and games and what new systems and games are coming. Hell back when it first came out there were people who thought that it would only ever have NES games just because Nintendo never projected their plans for the service to consumers.
The people who complain about the price or not owning the games at this point are silly. Emulation is far better now plus there's more games and now there's the Mario Kart DLC and games are being added every month while the price stays at a cheap $50 a year. And it's hilarious how some commenters say they don't want to rent the games cuz Nintendo can take them away at any point.... Which tells you how much they understand about businesses lol. To the people scared of using streaming services (tho I very much doubt you refuse to use Netflix or any of the variety of other streaming things where you don't own the movies and TV shows) they won't take it away because literally it's their business model. If they take it away they stop making money. How in 2022 do people still not understand how subscription services work lol. The current online subscription makes it so you will never lose the games, the opposite of what these naysayers are complaining about, unlike with the VC where when your system breaks those games are gone no matter how much you paid for them. I guess some people just love to complain no matter how nonsensical their complaints are. All i can say is thank god Nintendo moved from the overpriced VC model to a cheap subscription model. Better for Nintendo and better for us gamers!
@PhhhCough zelda isnt as popular in japan as it is in the west. This list also doesnt include digital sales, and the Wii U game sold a couple hundred thousand as well. So all told BotW is probably close to 3 million in Japan from both the WiiU & Switch. Whigh is very good for Japan. The series just isn't a huge seller in Japan. Same with Mario. Both Zelda and Mario as franchises underperform in Japan conpared to the rest of the world.
Got my switch a few months after it came out. Play it on and off. Physically no scratches or anything.
Of course i get the occasional joy-con drift (which started about three years in) which is easily fixed with electronic contact cleaner. Only other problem is that the contacts between the Joy-Cons and the system over time have become not perfect and so occasionally a JoyCon will disconnect while I'm playing in handheld mode, sometimes it's easy to reconnect it and sometimes it takes a minute of moving it around or sliding it in and out. Those seem to be the two weak points in the physical design of the Switch. Otherwise it's perfect.
Wouldn't mind getting an OLED for bigger screen and more battery but can't justify the purchase considering my Switch we still going strong other than those two occasional minor annoyances. My Switch should last me until the Switch 2 comes out in a few years.
Why is the author of this article talking about having beat a game but not having beat the final boss?? That doesn't make any sense at all. The absolute minimum to say you beat the game is that you must have actually beat the game lol.
Though of course with games like this where there's plenty of content besides simply getting to and beating the final boss, you can have beat the game while still missing out on a bunch of the content of the game.
50 hours might be the average time to play through the game well enough to be able to beat Ganon, but it's obvious most people play the game for much longer so that they can experience a significant amount of the game content rather than missing out on a lot of the game.
Like in Mario Odyssey I beat the game after like 27 or 28 hours, having already collected a good amount more moons than I needed to to beat the game, but then I doubled my play time to 60hrs getting more moons until I got to the point where only the harder ones are left, at which point I felt that I had experienced enough of the game to say that I got the whole experience, which doesn't require 100% it. BotW beating may be ~50 hrs, while getting the full experience of the game might be 100 hrs, while 100% might be 200 hours, and those players who just like to explore the world will play for even longer.
@FishyS haha exactly. Its a cool idea but basically they made a handheld thay isnt really portable because its just stupidly large but isnt a hybrid like the Switch either, wont be able to play high end PC games which it always seems like is what PC gamers are all about, doesnt look like it'd work well with mouse-controlled games, and has worse battery life than the first version of the original Switch model (though i suppose doesnt matter too much since this thing is so large you're not gonna take it far away from an outlet anyways). Oh and despite the thing being monstrously large they still barely had room for the buttons and dpad as it looks like those are about to slide off the side of the thing.
It's like they took the idea of the Switch and dumbed it down and made everything worse. I think probably for the vast majority of PC gamers a gamepad is the better solution than a steam deck lol. I think the steam deck only gets away with what it's trying to do because it's cheap compared to a gaming PC just because it's not a PC, it's just a gaming device. But just getting a gamepad for your gaming computer would seem to be a much cheaper and better solution for the majority of people and no doubt those people already have a gamepad to play with.
It feels like the ultimate solution to what the steam deck is trying to do is really just more PC games should come to the Switch which is the far superior gaming device.
I initially thought it was going to be really cool but then a few weeks ago I saw pictures of how enormous it is and I was like what's even the point that's barely even portable. A non-portable handheld is it pretty niche market I think.
Nice. Expansion pack well worth the admittedly not bad price now that N64 emulation has been fixed. Banjo and Majora's Mask are two of the most desired games on N64 so with emulation fixed and those two games this is now a solid package that will obviously continue to get better as they add more N64 amd Genesis games (and presumably eventually GB and GBA), and of course the free Mario Kart DLC doesn't hurt either.
At this point the expansion pack is very worth the buy. Personally I was just waiting for the awful emulation to get fixed and now it is! Though granted my Switch backlog is such that I'll probably wait until I have a very strong specific desire to play an N64 game before actually buying. But very glad to see that when I do decide to get the expansion pack it'll be good to go!
Hard to complain about the expansion pack at this point unless you're just complaining for the point of complaining. Well I guess the somewhat slow game release schedule and the lack of announcing when and what is coming and like when GB and GBA will be coming is still a worthwhile complaint. But still, as is, the expansion pack is now looking good!
So it had a browser and message boards. Ooh great, The whole internet has that now, Why would a video game system have it these days? Such a clickbait article. Show me on the 64 DD where you could play a bunch of N64 games online and you had a large subscription service for older games....oh wait, it didnt have any of that. These fake outrage over Switch artivles are getting lame.
I don't understand the authors confusion on the matter. He claims that Nintendo is being shy about offering its retro game content....but that's not true at all. NSO is a very cheap subscription that gives you access to literally everything on the platform at once. That's anything but shy. I'd say the VC model was much more shy where you have to pay a premium to play every single individual game. Most people would maybe spend 50 bucks buying a handful of games in that model and only get access to a handful of games. Whereas NSO give you access to tons of games for a very low yearly cost so it feels more friendly to consumers than saying paying $10 for a single N64 game.
The subscription model gives Nintendo a steady income stream and allows them to market a single product instead of trying to market hundreds of separate retro games. Plus they bundle it with Switch online play and cloud saves. It's simply a much better model than VC was, for both Nintendo and consumers. Literally the only problem with it is they have been expanding it too slowly. If they had already added GB and GBA and had weekly game additions no one would be seriously complaining. And for many popular retro third party games you can buy those on the eShop usually as collections so you already get those similar to have the VC did it.
VC was cool before subscription model, but now NSO is so much better. They just are adding stuff too slowly. But if this is to be their permanent long-term retro games service, for one that means they don't need to rebuild it on every system, and it's only going to get better and better. So the complaints about adding games too slowly and not enough games on there will be forgotten to history as a small complaint made just in the first few years of the service.
There is no reason for Nintendo to create and operate two redundant online services when they've already chosen the better model for both their business and for consumers.
@Kainbrightside agreed. I definitely feel like we could see a once-a-gen 2D zelda series with the art style of the LA remake (or at least starting from that art style). I'm hoping they release an original 2D Zelda in the next two or three years before the switch is replaced.
Would totally buy an Eternal Darkness remaster. That was such a unique game and I got rid of my GameCube games many years ago. If I could just pick two GameCube games to bring to Switch that aren't on Switch yet they would be wind waker and Eternal darkness.
@Arawn93 agree ok Steamdeck. It will certainly sell ok, but it isnt remotely a competitor to Switch. It's a giant clunky non-portable handheld, in a market in which most of the people are incredibly concerned about the highest end graphics which it can never have. It will certainly have its niche in the market but it's not going to be a mass product. It's almost like Valve looked at the switch and said well that's really cool and then made their own version but made all the wrong choices lol. Expensive, giant and poor battery life so not really portable, under powered in a market focused on power. Most PC gamers are gonna prefer a gaming laptop over a steamdeck.
Perfectly fine by me. A Switch successor is very unlikely before 2025 anyway (or maybe earliest holiday 2024). I'm very happy to be playing the Switch for another 3-5 years.
Still waiting on so many games: Prime remasters, Prime 4, pikmin 4, a 2d Mario, a DK game, Fzero, Star Fox, all the games announced for this year, another ring fit, a zelda maker, a new 2d zelda, hell maybe even another 3d mario, another pokemon or two, and a lot more, not to mention continued 3rd party support and great indies.
They just need to keep adding to Switch Online (specifically GB and GBA as well as getting those N64 and Genesis games out), release another Switch model in a couple years, and keep the great games coming.
Then when Switch successor finally comes out it should just be a fully backward compatible Switch 2 (i mean that part is super obvious), with like one new big feature to stay with Nintendo's mantra of always adding new hardware features - maybe a way to do VR would seem to be the most obvious and the only thing I can think of off the top of my head. So somewhere between 2025 and 2027 give me a Switch 2 that just continues everything about the Switch but impoved and throw in som new feature as well.
@Banjo- The current membership concept is way better than the VC, unless you enjoy spending a ton of money to get a handful of games. There's a reason why renting movies almost completely died off in the wake of Netflix - people prefer cheap access to many options on demand. This is why Switch Online is so much better than shelling out $5 to $10 dollars for every old game you think you might want. The VC was cool, but Switch Online is soooo much better. The dollar to game ratio has plummeted and the games are better (nintendo builds online play into these old games). The only reason people complain is because games get added more slowly because they have to put actual work into each game to add the online play and whatnot. But thats well worth it for Nintendo building out the ultimate Nintendo online games service. And many retro third party games from Nintendo systems you can still get in VC-like form because many of them have been released in collections for the system, so thats not a concern either. Yes they should already have GB and GBA available and they are building it slowly, but what they're building blows the VC out of the water.
Most people who have a Switch and play games often enough to think about paying for an online subscription probably have Mario Kart. Which means for most people the Expansion Pack is going to be worth it now. AC appeals to a ton pf very casual gamers but Mario Kart is more core gamer Nintendo so I think that sweetens the deal for many more people than the AC DLC did.
Between N64, Genesis, presumably GB and GBA in the future, the two DLCs and presumably a small number of more DLCs in the future, the extra $30/year, literally only a very cheap $2.5/mo, is becoming a great deal.
It's already a decent deal now with MK DLC coming soon, and within a couple years continually added content people will forget they were ever outraged by the subscription. Sure Nintendo is adding games too slowly to it as they have done sinxe launching Switch Online, but what they are doing is just slowly building the ultimate Nintendo subscription that will be cheap and appeal to many tens of millions of gamers.
@ModdedInkling thats a strange thing to say. MK8D the only Switch evergreen title?? Im guessing you dont follow their sales numbers. They have loads of evergreen titles. More than xbox one, PS4, Xbox series, and PS5 combined. Almost every single major first party game they release ends up being an evergreen. Botw, ac, mk8d, smash, poke sw/sh, mario odyssey, super Mario party, ring fit, splatoon 2, nsmbu:d, and several others have all been evergreens and almost all of them are still going very strong. Honestly Switch has the most impressive list of evergreen games of any system ever. And this year they are adding several more games that will undoubtedly be evergreens.
Its honestly kind of strange to see Nintendo saying they cant rely on evergreens when the industry has never seen such a display of evergreens as the Switch has. I hope what they are just trying to say is the next couple of years they are gonna get out a bunch of the smaller and put-off and hoped for franchises rather than just doing another round of all their evergreens or just sitting back and letting the Switch's loads of evergreen rake in the money. I think they're just saying they are going to be aggressive and keep pushing out lots of new games, which we are clearly seeing this year as 2022 is looking like by far the best uear for Switch games yet. Yeah their evergreens are going to break all sorts of sales records in the industry but it sounds like they are going to keep pushing the envelope and turn the Switch into something the gaming world has never seen before.
Graphics matter these days less than they used to because graphics in general are great these days. And this is obviously a cartoon art style so graphics matter a lot less than if it was a hyper realistic art style.
I mean it doesn't matter but obviously it's not a mainline game. Each mainline game introduces a new generation of pokemon. Just as Let's Go was its own series (or just a one-off) Legends is obviously also it's own series, hence the "Legends" title. That makes it very clear so there's no question about it.
I think we could see several Legends games in the coming years that basically act as prequel spin-offs, to create a whole Legend series separate from the mainline games. Doing a spin-off like this also allowed them to experiment with a new style of gameplay with less risk than if it was in the mainline series in case it didn't pan out well - though it seems like people are really liking it so very possible the next mainline game will have this sort of gameplay. The main line series will continue with Gen 9 whenever that's ready.
Yea just with the games listed it'll be a big year. Then there's also likely Metroid Prime remaster/remake (disappointing it seems to not be the Prime trilogy but still that's something). Likely also a new DK as that game has been rumored. Probably be one or two other surprises as well. And you gotta figure a 2D Mario is coming cuz it'd be insane to not have one on the Switch since right now there's just the Wii U port which itself sold really well, but i could see them keeping that for 2023 since this year is already stacked. So 2023 could have 2D Mario, Prime 4, and probably a new Pokemon Lets Go or something, as the big games next year.
NFTs are going to happen in gaming, it's a perfect fit. Most people just don't understand anything about blockchain so uninformed gamers tend to be against it. But millions of gamers already happily spend lots of money paying for microtransactions in games. NFT is just bring that market outside of the game and make it a public market So these in-game assets can be freely traded and possibly used in other games. It just opens up the whole thing. Gaming NFTs are going to become huge. Just like every game doesn't have a "seasons" or doesn't have micro transactions or doesn't have online play or doesn't have whatever feature, not every game is going to have NFTs, but there will be a segment of games that have NFTs and it's going to be a big market. NFT is just make paid for it in-game assets much more usable and purposeful.
Personally I'm not at all into buying stuff in game, So this doesn't directly appeal to me, But the advantages are obvious. And if game companies integrate NFTs in interesting and useful ways it could be very very cool and I could totally see owning some gaming NFTs.
He wants to be remembered for doing something entirely useless in a video game that was a huge waste of his time for several years hahaha. People sure are funny these days. I guess some people just want that tiny minute of narrow fame just for something, anything.
Surprised Mario golf isn't even on the list haha. Maybe people are too upset that it was only like 60% done at launch. Could have been much better with a few changes but still it's a very fun game multiplayer.
This year was all about Dread (despite not coming out until October!). Dread just blew me away, I was not expecting something THAT amazing. The game just shows why an entire very popular sub-genre is based around that series.
Seems like pretty weak year for switch...next year is gonna be epic though. I'm sure there's a lot of decent content in there people enjoy but outside of Dread it wasn't anything mind blowing. Though I hear SMT V is great and I'm sure MH fans loved Rise and i guess Bowser's Fury is pretty fantastic but its just an add-on. Personally I only got Mario Golf, Tony hawk, and Metroid this year, but I'll probably eventually try out Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury (but I'm worried the main game is more like the NSMB series where it's really fun multiplayer but I'll be playing alone so it'll just be decent, but i do want to try out bowsers fury). Oh and Pac-Man 99 rules! Wouldn't mind picking up Tetris effect eventually for cheap.

Re: Nintendo Switch 2: Everything We Know About Nintendo's Next Console - Nvidia Chips, Rumours
Re: Nintendo Switch 2: Everything We Know About Nintendo's Next Console - Nvidia Chips, Rumours
Re: Super Mario Bros. Wonder, A Brand New 2D Mario Game, Is Coming To Switch
Re: Talking Point: How Long Does Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Take To Beat, Really?
Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Has Surpassed 10 Million Sales In Three Days
Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Has Surpassed 10 Million Sales In Three Days
Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Has Surpassed 10 Million Sales In Three Days
Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Has Surpassed 10 Million Sales In Three Days
Re: Eiji Aonuma "Interested" In Zelda Movie After Mario's $1 Billion Box Office Success
Re: Poll: What Other GameCube Title Deserves A '10/10' Remake Or Remaster?
Re: 50 Best Nintendo Switch Games So Far
Re: Best Metroid Games Of All Time
I'm getting back in Prime since remastered came out.
Re: Feature: Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Is The Best Mario Kart, Right? Let's Find Out
Objectively probably MK8D is the best Mario Kart with online play, tons of characters and courses (especially with the incoming 48 DLC courses), which would make Double Dash the 2nd best.
Re: Nintendo Switch Sports Ad Tees Up Golf For November Release Date
Re: Random: Fan Remakes Pokémon Yellow In Link's Awakening-Style 3D
Ha lots of commenters giving this guy hate. Its a cool effort but the title shouldn't have compared it to Link's Awakening. Because of the title you go into watching the video expecting it to have really slick and awesome graphics like Link's Awakening remake but it doesn't at all.
I think all the hate from the commenters here is just because the article set up the false expectation of this guy's little prototype pokémon game looking amazing when it in fact looks like a little prototype of a game, which is what it is.
Re: No Man Sky's 4.0 Update Will Be "Fully Focused" On The Nintendo Switch Launch
Re: The Metroid Dread Vibes Are Strong In Action-RPG Platformer 'Trinity Fusion'
Oh wow yeah this game immediately jumps out at you as a very Dread-like game. Extreme Dread vibes for sure. But that ain't bad. Game looks awesome. I don't mind playing a Dread-copy as long as it plays well.
Re: Random: This Fan Found A Sealed Copy Of Nintendo Power #1 - Should He Open It?
I think I still have two copies of issue number one that are in decent condition but they are open so not mint condition.
Re: Don't Worry, Nintendo Hasn't Cancelled Advance Wars For Switch
I mean obviously the game is still coming out. The game is all done, considering that they delayed it just like a month or something before it was supposed to come out.
They're just sitting on the finished game for half a year now waiting for the Ukraine war to be over. Which is the most bizarre decision considering it's a cartoony war game and there have been plenty of highly realistic war games that have come out during other wars lol. Basically once the Ukraine war is over Nintendo will announce that it is launching. So hopefully for both Ukraine and Europe in general and Nintendo gamers, it'll launch sometime next year.
Re: This Gorgeous Action Game Looks Like A Moving Stained Glass Window
The stained glass window look is very impressive! The player movement and enemy movement gives off a NES action game vibe, for good or bad.
Re: Advance Wars 1+2: Re-Boot Camp Scheduled Maintenance Spotted
Not releasing a cartoon war game just because a new war happened in a part of the world makes no sense. No video game company has ever had a problem releasing the tons of realistic war games over the years despite wars going on all the time.
They should have just released it on schedule. Hopefully they'll schedule a release date soon because it makes no sense to continue to hold it off.
Re: Round Up: The Reviews Are In For Mario Strikers: Battle League
Re: Best Remakes And Remasters On Nintendo Switch
It is boring and mediocre at this point, and hopefully Nintendo is far along in development on a completely fresh take on 2D Mario right now
Re: Random: Requests For Zelda Ports Increase Following BOTW 2 Switch Delay
@HarvestGoddess yes when the Switch was first announced I figured that would mean we'd be getting both 2D and 3D zeldas on the hybrid systems now. And even more so after the gorgeous looking LA remake. It'd be criminal if they don't come out with a new 2D Zelda on the switch. I gotta think they have a topdown Zelda in the works right now.
Re: Take A Look At Some Impressive Hi-Res Nintendo Switch Sports Screens
Looks great. Just please for the love of god let the player move the character in Tennis! Wii sports handicapped tennis so bad by not allowing you to control the player. I'm worried tennis in switch sports is also gonna be nerfed by the same decision.
And it better have the training modes for each sport like the original did. I played the heck out of those golf training modes.
If they do things right this game could be amazing: Tennis character control, fun training modes, more than 9 holes of golf, and ideally add in boxing as an extra update after golf (though unfortunately I doubt it).
Re: Random: Requests For Zelda Ports Increase Following BOTW 2 Switch Delay
Re: Former Nintendo Employee Admits He's Frustrated With Switch Online
Re: Nintendo Highlights Upcoming N64 Releases In Latest 'Switch Online + Expansion Pack - Overview Trailer'
Re: Switch's Best-Selling Games In Japan After Five Years, According To Famitsu
@PhhhCough zelda isnt as popular in japan as it is in the west. This list also doesnt include digital sales, and the Wii U game sold a couple hundred thousand as well. So all told BotW is probably close to 3 million in Japan from both the WiiU & Switch. Whigh is very good for Japan. The series just isn't a huge seller in Japan. Same with Mario. Both Zelda and Mario as franchises underperform in Japan conpared to the rest of the world.
Re: Talking Point: How's Your Switch Holding Up After 5 Years?
Re: Talking Point: How Long Does Zelda: Breath Of The Wild Take To Beat, Really?
Re: Datamine Reveals What Nintendo Might Add To Switch Sports In The Future
It just needs boxing and for them to actually let you control your character in tennis. Both of those things would be huge improvements.
Re: The Ramp Brings Simple Skating Fun To Switch This Month
I like the style and it looks cool but I feel like without any sort of progression in the game it probably won't hold interest for very long.
Re: Round Up: The Reviews Of Valve's Steam Deck Are In - What's It Like Compared To Switch?
Re: Nintendo Appears To Have Improved Switch Online's N64 Emulation
Re: Random: 22 Years Ago Today The Nintendo 64DD Had More Online Features Than Switch
Re: Soapbox: Why Can't Nintendo Offer Both Virtual Console And Switch Online?
Re: Feature: "Shovel Knight Feels Like Our 'Mario', But We Kept Wondering What Our 'Zelda' Might Be"
@Kainbrightside agreed. I definitely feel like we could see a once-a-gen 2D zelda series with the art style of the LA remake (or at least starting from that art style). I'm hoping they release an original 2D Zelda in the next two or three years before the switch is replaced.
Re: Nightdive Studios Wants To Remaster Titles Like Eternal Darkness, But Hasn't Had Any Luck With Nintendo
Would totally buy an Eternal Darkness remaster. That was such a unique game and I got rid of my GameCube games many years ago. If I could just pick two GameCube games to bring to Switch that aren't on Switch yet they would be wind waker and Eternal darkness.
Re: The Switch Is Here To Stay, Says Nintendo Boss Shuntaro Furukawa
Re: The Switch Is Here To Stay, Says Nintendo Boss Shuntaro Furukawa
Re: Soapbox: NSO Isn't Game Pass, But Nintendo Is Learning The Benefits Of Subscription Models
Re: Soapbox: NSO Isn't Game Pass, But Nintendo Is Learning The Benefits Of Subscription Models
Re: Nintendo Expects Sales Of 'Evergreen' Games To Decline, Putting A Focus On New Titles
Re: Soapbox: Pokémon Legends: Arceus Raises The Question - How Much Do Janky Graphics Matter?
Graphics matter these days less than they used to because graphics in general are great these days. And this is obviously a cartoon art style so graphics matter a lot less than if it was a hyper realistic art style.
Based off pictures and videos this game to me seems to look fine and even pretty from a distance, other than the horrendous patterned water. But up close I think you notice the deficiencies and the lack of effort, for which there is no reason considering every pokémon game makes an enormous amount of money. It just doesn't make sense, the only thing I can think is that the graphic artists at game freak just aren't very good because they're used to just developing pokémon games for portables and not high-end systems like the Switch (obviously not high-end compared to consoles but very high-end relative to consoles compared to previous portables).
But bad textures and mediocre graphics on a cartoony game like this don't really concern me when pokémon has never been about good graphics. It would be nice for them to be better certainly but it's not a deal breaker. But I do see problems with the fact that there's a ton of pop-up and from one video I saw when a pokémon first popped up kind of far away it had a horrendous frame rate. It seemed like the game was just using a frame rate of like 3fps while the pokémon aren't visible but they popped up on the screen a couple seconds before the frame rate for it went up to normal speed and so it looked horrendous. That's a major issue that takes you out of the game experience. Hopefully game freak does some graphical patches to fix stuff like that which are actual glitches. I don't expect them to redo all the graphics obviously but they should fix the graphical glitches like bad popping up and horrendous animation framerate glitches.
Re: Talking Point: Do You Consider Pokémon Legends: Arceus To Be A Mainline Title?
Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Lining Up A Huge Year Of Gaming In 2022
Yea just with the games listed it'll be a big year.
Re: Square Enix President Knows You Hate NFTs Because You "Play To Have Fun"
Re: Random: This Guy Has Been Mining Out An Entire Minecraft World For 4 Years, And He's Almost Finished
He wants to be remembered for doing something entirely useless in a video game that was a huge waste of his time for several years hahaha. People sure are funny these days. I guess some people just want that tiny minute of narrow fame just for something, anything.
Re: Best Nintendo Switch Games Of 2021
Surprised Mario golf isn't even on the list haha.
