Update: Pre-orders for the physical version of Collection of Mana – due to launch on 27th August – are live now. It will cost £34.99 in the UK and $39.99 in North America.
Original Story: Nintendo has revealed that Square Enix is working on a remake of the third Secret of Mana / Seiken Densetsu title, and it's coming to Switch next year.
Called Trials of Mana, it will be a complete remastering of the Super Famicom title Seiken Densetsu 3, which never saw release in the west back in the day.
That's not all; during the Direct it was also announced that Seiken Densetsu Collection is being released in the west as Collection of Mana – and it's available on the Switch eShop today.
This pack includes Seiken (AKA: Final Fantasy Adventure), Secret of Mana, and Seiken Densetsu 3 – so while Trails of Mana is indeed welcome, it won't be the first chance you'll get to experience this legendary role-playing title in English. A limited-run physical edition is coming on 27th August 2019.

THIS was fantastic news.
Really excited for the Mana collection. Highlight of a pretty good direct
Great news, especially that it releases today! Never played the originals except for a bit of Secret of Mana but I might have to check this out!
Finally, some interesting news.
I played this game around 16-18 years ago in a snes emulator ..... Seiken Densetsu 3 .... one of the best RPGs I’ve played.
Can’t recommend this enough. Check it out people. Keep it in your radars. It’s that good.
Hopefully the remake is good too.
I'll have to check these out. I've heard it's an amazing series and am planning on breaking out Secret of Mana on the SNES Classic before long.
Love it.
Square listens to the mana people!
Glad to get the chance to play this legendary series
I'll wait for a sale
If they want big bucks for this, they are going to have to issue a physical release.
I've heard great things about these games- could someone fill me in about what they're about/ how they were released?
Oh awesome, that trailer shows there's a physical edition. Not on the Square-Enix store just yet though...
@TempOr 40 bucks on the eShop. Nintendo's website makes it appear a physical release is coming, too.
For that price, absolutely not. For me personally it'd need to be minimum 50% off for me to consider it. Will still just throw it on the watch list for now.
$40?! LOL!
I really wish I had old games to sell... I could retire to Barcelona
@Miles_Edgeworth theybwere released on snes many moons ago. Sd3 never came to the US but availailble with translations. Its a good game.
@AyanamiReign It's will be released by limited run games.
Damn, $39.99? I'll wait for sale...
Don't get me wrong, i really want this game but June is already pretty packed with other great games. I'll have to skip for now...
NintendoLife cant keep up with all the direct news
Sorry Square Enix, I love the release but €40 is just extremely expensive.
Gonna wait for the Switch physical (is announced for august) or the rumored PC release (because cheaper keys)
Look at Konami, their Contra collection is bigger and just €20.
It looks pretty and on top of that we're getting a classic collection to go along with it
@sanderev ow? I read that's not true
40 bucks? gtfo
This looks so much better than the Secret of Mana remake.
You can finally dodge attacks. I repeat: DODGE ATTACKS. It'll play like an actual ARPG now.
So ... not play the VC version anymore. ?
Funny thing is, I had a feeling they would not only announce it, but launch it the same day too.
As for the price.....its better than nothing. High now yes, but you can always wait for a sale if its just too much. Personally, we begged for this so we should try and support it, or who knows what next Collection SE might say "Forget about it." later down the line.
£35 is a complete disgrace for an 8bit game and 2x 16bit regardless of their quality. Seiken 3 is so good and I literally just went on after seeing this to buy it for that alone, but seriously...f that.
Ah! I was a bit confused by this in the Direct! I thought the Trials Of Mana reveal was part of the Western Mana Collection reveal. Didn't get that it was getting a seperate Remaster!
I guess that's the problem with so much information being thrown at you all at once! 😅
@Savino $13.33 dollars per game
I’ll wait and see if there’s a physical on the horizon, but otherwise I’ll probably buy it at full price, just to show with my money that I appreciate well done releases of original classics. Hopefully, Final Fantasy I-VI and/or Chrono Collection will also appear.
While I agree that the price seem steep, Seiken 3 was never released in the west, meaning they have actually made steps to translate it. If given the choice, I’d gladly pay $20 for that game alone, and I’d say that Secret of Mana alone is worth at least $10. $40 for all three is not too shabby.
I will be getting the physical edition. Wonder where we can “preorder now”.
Edit: Found it on the Square Enix store. Price seemed reasonable until I saw it with shipping and tax! Ordered one anyway.
The characters are translated into 3D really well, but the world is nowhere near as vibrant in color anymore.
I'll get the remake next year.
Sold for the remake. I guess I’ll stop playing 3 now. I wonder if we will get the remake of 1 as well?
Gahhhhhhhhhhhhhh
My switch won't connect to the internet just now!
So happy to hear this love the Mana series. The collection is great to have but that price is a little much, throw in the GBA remake, Legend of Mana and Heroes of Mana then it would be a different story. Think we'll ever see a rehash of Rise of Mana?
So much interesting stuff coming to the switch. Now I just have to find more time! I tried the secret of mana remake on PS4 but I did not like the artstyle, also something on the gameplay side put me off. It just didn't feel right. I'm hoping the version on the collection is better.
I've always wanted to play Seiken Densetsu 3 - I was following a fan translation something like 10 years ago.
I played a little of it on an emulator, and I enjoyed the combat much more than Secret of Mana on the SNES. I'd be quite interested in getting this.
It says physical release by Limited Run Games Preorder Now @Silly_G . But at the time of this post i didn't see it available for preorder yet on their site.
Edit: Read it wrong it's not by Limited Run Games. It's just a limited run produced by Square Enix.
Really hoping there's 3 player options in these. 2 has always had them, but 3 didn't originally, but I believe the fan translation patch I had added this option in. It was great for our all boy run, then subsequent all girl run with a couple friends
Why do people complain about the price point? Because these are old games or 8-bit or 16-bit games? I gladly pay 50€ for a Megaman game even though it takes you only a couple of hours to play through. Games have been at that price point since Nes and Secret of Mana 3 gets its first release in English. You won't get everything for free. And as someone already pointed out - you pay only 14€ per game. That's a bargain. Since mobile games have been a thing, a lot of people expect games to cost only 1$. That is just sad.
@BacklogBlues it’s not by Limited Run, https://store.na.square-enix-games.com/en_US/product/562426/collection-of-mana-switch
Edit: It’s going to be at retail.
Thanks @Joekun i read the video wrong. Cool now i will try to pre order it again.
I’m tempted but I already have more than enough final fantasy action to see me going for ages ! To me £35 for 3 games doesn’t seem to bad but it always seems a hard sell when they are older games. If that was £35 and physical no one would moan it’s the fact it’s digital and expensive
@NintendoPete €14 for a Game Boy game? Not paying that. It would have cost £3.59 for Game Boy Mana on 3DS and £5.49 for SNES Mana on Wii. I get the bulk of the cost is for the new translation of Trials of Mana, but £35 is way too much. I expected about £25...
It is $39.99 (US)for a physical copy @lemonjellydude. Square Enix is making a limited run of physical copies. The only catch is it doesn't release until August.
@lemonjellydude I wouldn’t pay £35 for the collection if it were at retail. It doesn’t matter if it’s digital or retail. £35 is too much for me. I’ll wait for a sale. I’d have paid £35 for Trials of Mana back in the mid 90s and think it was a bargain, but not any more.
I was well up for this, but couldn't quite believe it when I saw the price. £35! Doesn't help that it's sitting next to the Contra compilation, which is £16.
@NintendoPete
I guess we’re at the point where people like you pretend the Virtual Console didn’t happen which had several games that were localized for the first time ever while still costing $10 or below. And even if that’s taken out of the equation the Switch boosts multiple collections that offers tons of meaty/replayable games that are around the price of these games or even cheaper!
I have the physical Japanese version, so I really hope we'll be able to download the English patch! Does anyone know if it will be possible?
Like practically everyone else here, will wait for a sale. £20 tops I’d pay.
Well, the Trials of Mana remake came out of the blue and I am interested. That Collection of Mana... I'd rather have just the Secret of Mana remake please...
Why don't they just release physical editions the normal way? This collection was screaming for it...
@Moroboshi876 @backlogblues It’s now available for preorder on Best Buy (and I assume elsewhere). Much better price without the outrageous shipping. So they are releasing it the normal way, I guess it just won’t be reprinted.
@Joekun But that's the US. Here in Europe it's not available.
Got it right away, fair price for me played all of them before and can easly play them again for a 250+ hours
@Moroboshi876 Oh, that sucks. Hope that will change so everyone who wants it can get it.
Just bought it.
Shame cannot do Full screen. Not too keen on the borders, I know they do it so it to keep resolution, but I wouldn't mind a hit on that. Never mind. It is portable SOM! And SOM3 translated
Owning Secret of Mana on my SNES mini I decided I'd put it on my 3DS too to actually play it. I'll carry on with that for now to decide how interested I am in the collection.
Love it that we're fiiiiiinally getting SD3 (or Trials of Mana as it's now going to be called.) But for $40, I want a physical edition.
Thanks @Joekun i just cancelled my preorder with Square Enix and Saved $13 as i ordered two. Plus i'm a Best Buy Club member so i get the points and don't have to worry about damaged goods in my mailbox. Thanx again.
Preordered the physical. It's on the Square Enix Store.
@Savino Are they, now
I do hope we get the Secret of Mana remake in the future.
Looks pretty cool to me! Not enough time in the day to play everything I want to play! But if I quit my job I can't afford anything. lol
Nintendo needs to take note and release Mother 3.
At long last... Seiken Densetsu 3, Trials of Mana. Hell, even though I ran Sword of Mana, I will run Final Fantasy Adventure as I never got to play it in that form. I never thought this collection would come to Switch. What a great day. Now SE, how about that 3rd game in the Soulblazer trilogy, Terranigma?
One question, does the third one support multiplayer like the repro cartridges do?
Had Trials been translated & released on Wii or WiiU eshop I would have bought it years ago & then pick up the remake once that comes out. Now I'm conflicted between the two.
It sucks that they didn't include that PS vita remaster of the first game in the collection. I'm a fan of the World Of Mana series of games so I'll enjoy the games until the Trials Of Mana remaster releases.
Bad news, folks! I do own the japanese cartridge of the collection and it does not get the update which includes the translations. I tried everything from deleting the updates, redownload them, I even deleted the save data in the Nintemdo Online Cloud.
Any ideas?
@Otokiwa I tried it and it does not seem to work
Whooops... Just pre-ordered the physical version for 40€... Way to much money, but Mana! Physical! Limited!
@SmaMan there is, but limited! Be quick, order it from Square directly!
@mazzel
Got it pre-ordered! Thanks for the tip!
Why is "Legend of Mana" not on this as well? It seems everyone forgot about that game. Shame...
@Aronos Hmm maybe not "old" enough, yet? Also, as far as I know, this game was far from successful compared to the other ones...
I sold my original Secret Of Mana on the SNES a few years ago in great condition for a whopping £60. We've never played a western version of Trials, do we know if it's any good??
A physical release available internationally? That's fantastic news!
I must know though, and this is really important, do these games suffer from input delay?
It was a huge problem for the SNES titles in the Mega Man X Legacy Collection.
Physical release for Trials of Mana ??
Interesting... 😀
I have never played any Mana series games but i will keep my eyes on it.
Pre-ordered about half an hour ago. Can't miss this one out as SquareEnix are only doing a limited run
@RupeeClock
played through all Megaman collections and never noticed any input lag.
I see Amazon UK have this up for pre-order, so it will be available in the UK.
@NintendoPete
Did you try doing a Hadouken in Mega Man X? It's impossible.
Yes, I was at full health. The input is difficult to do when there's no input issues as it is.
Which titles specifically did you play? I doubt the NES titles on Legacy Collection 1 have a problem, but I'm worried about Mega Man 7 on Legacy Collection 2.
Less so for Mega Man 8, as I didn't notice any input issues with Mega Man X4 on X Legacy Collection 2.
@BionicDodo
Oh, that would've been nice to know earlier. I pre-ordered from the Square Enix store as linked in the article.
Amazon ordering would've been easier.
@RupeeClock Can probably still cancel and order from Amazon if that helps or is cheaper...
Ordered my copy on Amazonian a few hours ago! I thought the wait for a physical copy would be much longer than August tbh.
@RupeeClock
yes - I did - that's how I beat Sigma. I played through all the Megaman games - Megaman 1-10 and X1 -X8. Had no problems at all. I usually play with the Joy Con buttons and not the L stick. The Hadouken was indeed not always that easy to pull off - but manageable
I'll buy both!
Though I wish they had included Sword of Mana instead of Final Fantasy Adventure. I always considered that the faithful remake in the style of 2 & 3.
So much LOVE with that Trials of Mana remake...
Screw FFVII, now THIS is how you make a good and faithful remake.
€40 for a GB game and 2 SNES games? Even the VC is cheaper
Im starting to get into buying some physical games and this is the sort of thing I would like to have on a cart with a nice box. Great that its on amazon as I dont have to pay straight away!
@BionicDodo
Not really gonna be necessary, the price is the same and it's free shipping anyway. No sense cancelling it now.
It has the added benefit of communicating directly to Square Enix too I guess.
@NintendoPete
Interesting, I was playing with an 8bitdo SF30 Pro, which emulates a Pro Controller. I'll have to try playing it with Joy Cons instead and see if that improves it.
Also worth mentioning that I'm playing Rockman X Legacy Collection as opposed to Mega Man X Legacy collection, both games have English/JP language support for both the games and the menus.
I mean it's neat that there's even achievements for playing both languages of a game as I recall.
@626b
This is very much geared towards collectors, enthusiasts, and preservationists. You can just get the game digitally for cheaper right now if you just wanna play it.
Nice physical release! Just preordered on BB($32). Still have GCU till January. Even sweeter deal!
Waiting for it to appear on German amazon. I love this three games.
@RupeeClock If you're talking about this collection being available cheaper digitally, it is also £35/€40 on the eShop.
the price is fair. it's the same price as the japanese release and for that they didn't have to do a whole new translation.
Not only translation, but they have to redo the codes too since this isn't just emulation
https://twitter.com/MOOMANiBE/status/1138522174522658817
im happy with the price as im getting it physically. If I bought it digital then I would probably wait for a sale. Im happy to wait till august to play it as I still have undertale, final fantasy 9 and final fantasy x & x2 to get my teeth stuck into.
@BionicDodo
Oh, I had no idea.
In that case that makes the physical purchase that much more justified.
I guess it's expensive because there was development and relocalisation of a previously unlocalised game involved.
@darkfenrir
Now I'm curious if the package is emulating GB/SNES ROMs, or if it actually is something else like recompiled code.
But yes, translating older games often requires reimplementing any sort of dialogue systems, and can be extremely difficult to do without source available, especially if the game was not developed with an international release in mind.
This is why Breath of Fire 1/2 on the SNES for example had such unnatural dialogue and short character names, their dialogue boxes were designed with large print Japanese characters in mind.
There's also the Mother 3 fan translation process, the technical documentation and blogs about getting it to work are fascinating.
@RupeeClock Here's a quote from the thread:
"And we know there was effort put into the code - character names can be more than six letters long now.
From what Neill Corlett said back in the day, trying to do that on his end would've done insane violence to the ROM. That's why Hawkeye & Charlotte were renamed in the fanTL."
So it seems they do remake the code at least in part- and this is a proof of it. So it must not be emulation is what I gather from here.
(And yeah, fan translation is pretty crazy, people that do it for fun without any sort of payments are amazing)
Cheaper at Game Collection for UK.
@Moroboshi876
Are you in UK ? It's on Amazon pre-order for £34.99 Released Aug 27th if that helps.
@GiooiG No, I'm in Catalonia, but today a normal distribution has been announced, so in the end I'll be able to preorder it with the usual discount in my usual store. I can breathe now. Thanks.
@RupeeClock I got it yesterday. Secret of Mana is present and correct down to the glitchy music when too much is happening on screen and the always welcome chain casting exploit.
@RadioHedgeFund
So it's a highly faithful release, down to the original issues. I can get behind that.
It would be nice though if it were an optimised release that fixes slowdown and limited audio channel technical problems.
This whole thing was one of the e3 highlights for me. Onlu shadowed by botw2. Grabbed the collection on the eshop day 1 and looking forward to trials remaster.
40 bucks is ridiculous. Final Fantasy Adventure is throw away for me. Secret of Mana is fantastic and I've always wanted to play the third one, but 40 bucks for games that are 25 years old?
@RupeeClock it also has a jukebox mode for the soundtracks!
Where and when can I order this?
I knew not get the digital was a sweet idea.
@GVIL
Square Enix's own store as linked in the article, or on Amazon UK.
Don't know if Amazon US has it, haven't checked but they might.
@RupeeClock sweet as just done it😊
I was expecting the collection, but I'll admit, the remakes of SD3 and Panzer Dragoon shocked me. Very cool to see so many older franchises getting their time in the sun again lately (SD3, Panzer Dragoon, Shenmue III, Final Fantasy VII Remake, etc.).
$48 shipping?! For a f-ing regular sized Switch game case?!
Eat me, Square. 😠🖕
@EVIL-C
Is that from the US site to Canada?
When I pre-ordered from the UK site to a UK address, it was free untracked shipping, or tracked shipping for about £5.75
Yes got my physical copy pre-order right after I heard the awesome news. There's no way I'm passing on Trials of Mana on the collection and I will be getting the remake as well.
@NintendoFan4Lyf Yeah but then when you compare to if you would had bought these games physically for their original system in this day and age, that will run you around $80 something as a used copy of Secret of Mana for Super NES will cost you around $40, a used Final Fantasy Adventure for Game Boy will be around $20, and a used untranslated version of Seiken Densetsu 3 will cost you around $20 (a good repro with English translation will cost around $50, a bad repro with English translation will cost you around $20 or $30). That's around 80 or so bucks, 40 or more than what you will pay for this collection.
Not to mention if you want to play Final Fantasy Adventure on your TV for your SNES you also had to buy a $20 Super Game Boy adapter and it's not even in HD not to mention if you want to play 3-player co-op in Secret of Mana you still had to invest in a $30 multi-tap adapter. That's a lot you're paying for low quality gameplay with 3 original games on Super NES compare to the $40 collection here which all you need is a Switch and the controllers to play it with.
@Savino The digital is also 40 which is crazy. Heck Sonic Mania was 20 digital with more work.
Since the US version also has multiple languages, nothing keeps me from importing a physical copy. I prefer to play games in English but Secret of Mana is THE childhood game for me and unfortunately it just doesn't feel right without You-Know-Who's crappy German translation.
Edit: Orrr I can just take the UK version.
@RupeeClock Yes, US to Canada.
Just realized EB Games & Best Buy Canada have the game up as well. I'd heard it was exclusive to the Square store, but it seems not to be the case.
https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/collection-of-mana-switch/12601643?
https://www.ebgames.ca/Switch/Games/768784
@Damo Update the story.
Does anyone know if Trials of Mana has a different battle system? I was hoping it wouldn't be slash, wait, slash, wait like in Secret of Mana.
@Manah The German Square shop has it as well, 39.90€ with free shipping
@mazzel
Yeah, I found that right after I edited my post. The image doesn't have a rating logo though (but it's listed in the description), and Amazon Germany doesn't list it (UK does), so no idea if it's its own version. Not that it matters
https://www.thegamecollection.net/collection-of-mana-switch/
£30.99.. (+point discount if you have some)
To be fair this should be £14.99-19.99 max.
Wish I could be excited about the remake (which looks gorgeous!). But when I heard it's only going to be 1 player with no co-op whatsoever, it will definitively get a hard pass.
It's unfortunate that it's only 2 players max on the collection despite having 3 characters in your party. I was hoping the remake would up it to 3 but Square doesn't wanna go that route.
Wasted effort...
@Manah Yep, already pre-ordered
40€ for digital is meeeh, but for physical... I payed more for golf story incl. shipping from limited run (~70€ for the game plus the soundtrack on LP...)
Would've loved to see Secret of Evermore as an unlockable.
I'll wait for the remake of 3 in 2020 to play it.
I just can't play these old games anymore. I'm not saying they're bad, but why play the classic when a remake is on the way?
I have grown up with NES, SNES, and N64---but I don't get that desire to play old games based on nostalgia.
Kinda bummed to find out that Trials is 2 player only, but it seems the original was always 2 player only. Strange, considering Secret is 3. I was kind of hoping to play Trials with my two boys, but I guess we will be having to take turns then.
I pre-ordered it anyways. I always loved the vibe of Trials, and can't wait to play it easily soon!
And I guess that means I quadruple-dipped on Secret of Mana. SNES, Virtual Console, Mini SNES and now Switch... Haha.
Should I wait for the remake to play Trials of Mana or should I give the original version a go? I’m afraid of spoiling it all before the remake comes out but are there big differences between the two(aside from graphics)?
In the end, I cancelled my pre-order from the Square Enix store, opting to order it from 365Games instead. They had it a little bit cheaper.
That site also had the Pokémon Sword and Shield double pack for about £13 cheaper than on Nintendo UK Store, so I cancelled that pre-order to order that as well.
