Re: Review: STEINS;GATE 0 - A Classy Follow-Up For Veterans Of The Original Visual Novel

Raylax

@Aurumonado I was really let down by the SG0 anime. The original anime is one of my absolute favourites (and my entry point into the series) - played SG0 after watching that and was equally in love with it. The SG0 anime on the other hand... yeah, kinda didn't stick the landing. A few too many corners cut, a fair bit too much plot sacrificed at the alter of insert generic fanservice trope here.

ymmv but for me one of the strengths of the SG anime was the cut a lot of the typical visual novel 'waifu' / fanservice guff, whereas the SG0 anime just indulged in it with both hands with some exceptionally dodgy contrived scenes

Re: Looks Like Pokémon Sword And Shield Players Can Buy Access To Online Features Without A Subscription

Raylax

Yeah that doesn't read like that to me at all. It just sounds like there's a button ingame that lets you buy an NSO sub. There's no ingame button to buy a sub in any other online switch games yet as far as I know (just a firmware-level prompt if you attempt to access the online without one).

I believe there's a new(ish) PEGI/ESRB requirement to disclose ingame purchases, which this would flag.

Re: Fans Left "Disappointed" At Developer Atooi's Attitude Towards Chicken Wiggle Switch Kickstarter

Raylax

Donating to a Kickstarter doesn't entitle you to anything. All it promises is that the recipient will attempt to fulfill the goals of the project. That's it. No guarantees, no deadlines. If the project takes forever, or falls through, that's the gamble of backing something on Kickstarter and you knew that going in. You're, at best, something akin to a silent partner - emphasis on silent. If you don't like that, don't back things on Kickstarter.

This is a project I actually backed. It taking a while or being slow to update really isn't a concern to me. I knew the terms of what I was putting money into when I chose to back the project. Atooie doesn't owe me anything.

Re: Visual Novel Steins;Gate Elite Is Heading To The West On Switch In February 2019

Raylax

@Rhaoulos It really depends. A 'pure' visual novel is basically that, yeah, a book with music and pictures and occasional animation, and extremely light on gameplay. But then there's stuff that blends in a significant amount of actual gameplay like Danganronpa, Phoenix Wright and Zero Escape.

Steins;Gate is definitely the former type, but S;G Elite swaps the static images for effectively the entire anime run (plus new scenes from the anime studio for the routes that were never adapted previously)

Re: The Nintendo Switch NES Controllers Are Now Available To Pre-Order In Europe

Raylax

@BensonUii "Child account" is the term Nintendo uses to describe the accounts added to a family account (the "parent account" being the one that actually pays for it), so yeah unfortunately I don't think the age of the child account users matters; you just basically need to be on an individual account (or the "parent account" of a family account) to buy the controllers. Which... kinda sucks.

Re: The Nintendo Switch NES Controllers Are Now Available To Pre-Order In Europe

Raylax

Note that according to the small print on the site, you will not be eligible to purchase these if you are a child account on a family plan - only the parent account is eligible (and they are still limited to ordering one set, not one per child account)

So if you were planning to save money by using a family account w/ friends as I was, you might be getting left out on some of the special offers.

Re: All Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Players Will Receive In-Game Freebies To Celebrate The New DLC

Raylax

Cool, I'm at the endgame of my current (non-NG+) playthrough, not quite there on being able to farm legendary core crystals yet, so +15 is a nice little bonus for now. There's a couple reasonably-common rare blades I'm still missing so hopefully that'll help me grab at least one of those (but no big deal if not, I've still got like 30 others to complete affinity charts for!)

Re: Review: A Normal Lost Phone (Switch eShop)

Raylax

If you're interested in this (as I am), do check other reviews, it's been favourably received by almost every other one I can find - not to say this review is wrong (subjective opinions yadda yadda), but shop around. I'm probably still going to pick it up based on other reviews.

As side-note, I do find it interesting when people complain about games "pushing agendas." All games push agendas. It's a creative field. Particularly with narrative-heavy games like this, there'd be no point to it if it didn't have something it wanted to say. Funny how people only seem to complain about it when its not an agenda they personally subscribe to.

Re: Bandai Namco Confirms It Is Officially Working on Metroid Prime 4

Raylax

"Bandai Namco Confirms It Is Officially Working on Metroid Prime 4"

No they didn't. Bandai Namco has confirmed nothing. Nintendo has responded that they don't comment on speculation. Multiple sources have stated it to Eurogamer. None of those sources are stated to be official spokespeople for Bandai Namco.

Heck, half a dozen lines into your own article you state that Eurogamer confirmed it, not Bandai Namco.

(before anyone misunderstands me - I 100% believe that BandaiNamco are indeed working on Metroid Prime 4. I have no reason to disbelieve either Eurogamer or its sources. But the article headline states BN confirmed when they categorically have not confirmed anything)

Re: Rollercoaster Tycoon Could Be Coming To The Switch

Raylax

Atari's been walking dead for a few years now (fun history lesson: modern Atari isn't actually Atari - Infogrammes bought the brand a while ago and renamed themselves. Original Atari was buried a long time ago). They've been putting out pretty uniformly awful stuff for at least the last few years, so as much as I love classic RCT, I really wouldn't count on this being any good.

If you want good classic RCT, there's an Android/iOS port of the original two and it's excellent stuff. As for Switch, let's hope the superb Planet Coaster makes its way over some time.

Re: Discord CEO Reiterates His Company Is Keen To Work With Nintendo On Switch Voice Chat

Raylax

@Neon_Blues You should probably go find out about it rather than jumping to conclusions based on a self-confessed complete lack of knowledge. Just good life advice in general, really.

My first instinct on this news is "cool", but I do wonder what difference Discord would actually be able to make beyond upping the audio quality. Switch doesn't have a built-in mic, so there's little getting around the ridiculous Y-cable audio piping solution offered for Splatoon 2. And even if Discord was offering a better bespoke solution for Switch; would it not still be inherently more convenient and easier to just... use regular discord on a laptop or smart device like we already do? Nintendo's voice chat software is awful but I'm not sure its something that can be fixed in a manner that would be better than just ditching it altogether.

Re: Video: Xenoblade Chronicles 2's Combat is More Straightforward Than You Might Think

Raylax

Nice vid, but some fixes & clarifications for terminology:

Auto-Attacks - stand near an enemy. Your driver will smack them. 'S sbout it, really. Auto-attacks come in patterns of three, that's important to know further down.

Driver Arts are the attacks assigned to X, Y and B. They recharge by using auto-attacks. Most of them have special effects denoted under the name, such as doing more damage from behind or inflicting Break. The Driver Arts available to you depend on the Blade you currently have active on the field.

Specials are the attacks assigned to A. They are recharged by using Driver Arts, and can be recharged faster through a technique called cancelling (more on that in a bit). The more you charge them between uses, the higher the rank of the Special. Rank 1 to 3 (I to III) are recharged by using Driver Arts; however Rank 4 (IV) is charged by remaining close to your Blade whilst having high affinity (a gold beam between you and your Blade)

Cancelling - most commonly auto-cancelling - using a Driver Art within a few frames of an Auto Attack connecting. It recharges your Driver Arts faster if successful, as denoted by a blue ring appearing around your driver. Remember auto-attacks come in patterns of 3? Cancel on the third attack for a bigger effect than 1 or 2. Note the name is perhaps a little misleading - you don't actually cancel the auto-attack; you cancel the delay animation after it.

Driver Combo - a combo triggered by using Driver Arts in sequence, denoted by a status bar above the left of the enemy health bar. The most common Driver combo is Break -> Topple, as will be familiar with players of XC1 and XCX. Break does nothing by itself, but opens an enemy up to be easily Toppled. A Toppled enemy can then be Launched, and a Launched enemy can be Smashed. You'll need Driver Arts that list these effects to perform a Driver Combo.

Blade Combo - somewhat analogous to Chain Attacks in XC1. These actually aren't that complicated but it'll take some explaining. Let's go step by step.
First, use a Special. The rank doesn't matter. If your partners have their Special available, you can trigger theirs by using ZL or ZR respectively - the rank of their Special is denoted by the number of dots circling their character icon.
Upon using a Special, a countdown status bar will appear above the enemy health bar on the right, along with an elemental combo tree in the top right of the screen. The tree that appears depends on the element of the Special you started with.
Next, before the timer expires, use a Special of Rank 2 or higher and one of the corresponding types in the second level of the tree for a strong Blade Combo attack. Repeat with a Rank 3 or 4 Special of corresponding type for the final level of the tree to finish the combo for MASSIVE DAMAAAAGE (ahem). Perhaps even more special things will happen if you finish with a Rank 4 Special...

Fusion Combo - Finish a Blade Combo whilst a Driver Combo is in effect. Simples.

There's more to it than this to discover, but these are the basics that'll see you through the early game.

Edit: Fixed some terminology

Re: Soapbox: Seriously Nintendo, It's Time For A Switch Joy-Con With A Proper D-Pad

Raylax

I've had zero issues with the dpad buttons and in in some cases actually prefer them to the pro controller dpad haha. For eg, the default mapping for "use special" in Shovel Knight is Up+Y, which I kept triggering accidentally with the pro controller dpad, but not with the joycon's separate buttons (although I later just changed it to A in the options and erased the problem altogether)
