Re: Video: Watch the First Two Episodes of Pokémon Generations

RTT

@Freeon-Leon Yeah, was thinking the same lol.

On topic: Finally, pokemon which have animal like voices or in-game voices. This reminds me Stadium games.
And also: competent people doing competent things in pokemon, things that are way more logical than in the main anime.

The series is short but at least acts like its viewers have some intelligence Compare that to any Advance Generation episode, they are all hilarious and available on 3DS. Mind blowing too -deus ex and cheap plot exuses and fillers everywhere.

Re: Hardware Review: Pokémon GO Plus

@SLIGEACH_EIRE Agreed. It's a bluetooth remote control... for like 35 USD? And it doesn't work as good as they promised. Untitled
Edit: at least, contrary to the official source, it does counts steps.

Re: Review: Pixel Paint (3DS eShop)

RTT

@Waann I was thinking of manually [re]coloring with Select by Color tool help and then turn the art into indexed colors and scale it down but the process you did sounds like it's working as well, for smaller images. Good try.

GIMP can detect the colors from RGB image, so you may want the creating-a-custom-palette step removed, if you recolor all the artifacts manually first (two hotkeys and two mouse click inbetween per color basically), before you index the image. Perhaps it may even work without re-coloring, if you restrict the number the colors on the picture, in the convert to index window (there is a risk the color will change tho)

Obviously, complex paintings with gradiens looks horrible when indexed, but the pixel art with somewhat limited palette should end untouched. However, for that 320px pixel art, the custom color palette may be a must, depending on how many colors were used in the art...
The colors shouldn't be the biggest problem, it is scalling the image down what bugs me the most :/

I will try make some export tests as well, and also do something bigger in the next week and experiment with the 'converting' process. I need the time for that tho. And I'm not that good at pixel art, so bare with the art, if I manage to make one ^^'

Re: Video: Official Trailer Shows Off More Pokémon Sun and Moon Ultra Beasts

RTT

@SmaMan They are probably human or human related. They may not even be catchable in the games, who knows?

@Mega_Yarn_Poochy Or people who seek and read the leaks every month and later blame news sites that they are dissapointed by no exciting news ;D

@wizzgamer 3DS was never as good in graphics department as PSP. 3DS was already technologicaly outdated at the launch time.
It is the 3D effect which makes the images smoother and nicer on 3DS - count that as a weird anti-aliasing - and pokemon almost doesn't use it. Pokemon [main series] sucks from graphical side anyway, but there are nicer looking games on the system as well.

Re: Professor Kawashima to Appear in Event to Discuss "Secrets of Healthy Ageing"

RTT

@Mr_Zurkon Wikipedia told me this: "Nintendo has been careful not to claim the game has been scientifically validated, however stating that it is an «entertainment product 'inspired' by Kawashima's work in the neurosciences»".
No research means no proof. And when there's no proof, liable/superstitious people can make up their own conclusions
¯(ツ)
But as neufel said, the game is fun and it's not doing any harm.

@neufel Thanks for the reply! I have assumed the helpfulness is more or less a marketing trick, but the little in-game tasks are entertaining and they may improve... something? Just like playing any other game that forces you to solve tasks or think creatively, anyway.
I think guitar playing or juggling may be a good comparison to Brain Age, but with much less impact from the game, obviously

Re: Professor Kawashima to Appear in Event to Discuss "Secrets of Healthy Ageing"

RTT

@Billsama Does that refer to NX?

More topic related: I was always curious how helpful really are are those brain training apps, Kawashima's or others. It's known that practice makes pefect, but was it really supported by a good old academic research?
I had fun with the preinstalled version of the app on DSi XL. Unfortunately, it isn't in my language; I always scored badly at those word-related tasks.

Re: Pokémon GO Has Lost 79 Percent of its Paying Population

RTT

@DragonEleven I know there was one change but didn't noticed the second. I have a Bulbasaur nest nearby and I'm afraid it may be lost, but it was okay 2 weeks ago.
I supposed they will be rotating the nests to make some unavailable monsters available. I guess it's once per month, but that's just a guess. Thanks for the info.

Re: Nintendo Sends a Lovely Legend of Zelda Care Package in Honour of a Young Fan

RTT

@JLPick Hey, no problem. I didn't know what you are refering to. I live in Europe and in the land long forgotten by Nintendo so no packages and warranty cards gifts were here, unless you had an German uncle or something :/ I wasn't aware of that particular Wii package. I thought you were asking if something like that ever happened

Re: Guide: How To Earn Candy With Your Pokémon GO Buddy

RTT

@DragonEleven Sorry, I read that "then why not just list it by the type of candy?" as it meant the distance. In this sense, candies have 3 types: 1, 3 and 5km.
... because listing it by pokemon or by candy is basicaly the same thing, minus the repetition in pokemon name list.
Just wanted to be helpful. My fault I misunderstood, but there is no reason to be mean.

And frankly, listing them by distance (or highlit) can be useful too. Like, I think I will be doing Clefairy now, as it is not only rare but has only 1km

Re: Nintendo Sends a Lovely Legend of Zelda Care Package in Honour of a Young Fan

RTT

@JLPick It wasn't Nintendo, but if that will satisfy you, a few years ago a guy did a badly done doodle and sent it to Apple or Google (can't remember which), later the person received the newest device with his personal, badly drawn doodle on it, and it also has a custom box, with the same drawing
I can't find the source for it now as it's been some time.

Re: Review: TAP TAP ARCADE 2 (Wii U eShop)

RTT

@NImH I think NL once wanted to review possibly every eShop game. I may be incorrect tho as it was some time ago. They reviewed PAL and NTSC versions separately as well (not sure if that's still the thing).
It's good they review the most obscure titles on eShop. Reviews help you decide if the game is worth a pruchase.

Re: Feature: Exploring the Licensed Content in RCMADIAX Games on the Wii U and New 3DS eShop

RTT

@3MonthBeef Well said. The whole thing reminds me getting a game greenlit on Steam. It's not exactly clear how the game is greenlit and everyone want to make their game published. Few gamers with a different taste ("I don't like shooters!" or "I don't like RPGs!") or even trolls could simply ruin your day. I heard some shady stories about cheating in voting too... The luck, persuasion and flair for business are the main actors here.
Whenever there is a profit, there will be cheaters and haters... And the more the complex medium is (aka various genres in video games), the more complex end results can be.
Steam is doing good job, games have their categories, but people with various tastes will vote with their tastes.

Althrough if there is an effort in the game, people tend to be more positive, even if they dislike that partiular genre.

Re: Feature: Exploring the Licensed Content in RCMADIAX Games on the Wii U and New 3DS eShop

RTT

@AcclaimDev
Two words: Smartphones and tablets.

I was talking about indie game devs in general, not only about those being restricted to Nintendo platforms. Aside of that, I belive that creating a game for Nintendo costs a bit more than making a smartphone game, so that's the reason we don't get that many badly written or exported titles on Nintendo systems. Plus, let's be honest here, current Nintendo platforms aren't what the mobile devs want - why even bother to asset flip and putting the additional effort if the income will be close to none? Those people don't want to provide quality, they want to 'win' by mass producing low budged titles and asset flipping certainly helps here.

Mobile apps are crappy but they lifes are short too (usualy). They are made to grab quick attention, make some small bucks and then let be replaced by another random/trendy thing. That's the drive here, and RCMADIAX games seem to fit into the formula.

The article won't do much difference as people already know this stuff. And RCM is just one of those who knew that and used it, they just published their games on Nintendo platforms.

Re: Feature: Exploring the Licensed Content in RCMADIAX Games on the Wii U and New 3DS eShop

RTT

@3MonthBeef The last paragpraph of your last comment is clever. Consumerizm kind of clever. I can image something like that happening in a short future. My image of that service takes form of a race to stay on the top. The content and the way how the games are seen on the service however can differ drasticaly - it all ends to the question: who would pick those higher quality, worthy the exposure games? Gamers? The service owners? chosen based on Metacritic score? Another source?
Will the service end as dank meme games vault, will it be full of games choosen from dubious reasons (bribing) or will it have games that score high enough at certain websites - meaning the choice is biased as well? How the quality assurance will work there? How can you create a service where being unfair is not only not allowed but banished?

How the devs will feel about the fact, their game was choosen? What are their morals? What if their game is in fact bad? What if the community won't like it? Will they participate at this rat race or the shame (if the service turn out bad) will be too strong to handle? How about the rest of the devs? Unoticed, perhaps unwanted, and all the attention they get is from hipsters?

I know, offtopic, but I found your comment interesting.

Re: Review: Pixel Paint (3DS eShop)

RTT

@Waann Thanks for the input. I had been busy with the work and I haven't touched the app since. Looks like you saved me some time with image-export experimenting. As I mentioned earlier, the smallest possible canvas size gave me really good results, but you proved my assumption right: more complex artworks will have lots of compression artifacts. That's a shame, actualy...
Edit: I just thought about not so convinient way around. If you really, like really, wanted to export the file, you could use a separate digital art program to clear the artifacts and save the file as png. Yeah, sounds dumb, but maybe you could use that as a last resort?

Re: Feature: Exploring the Licensed Content in RCMADIAX Games on the Wii U and New 3DS eShop

RTT

Assets were made to use them. It's nothing wrong to use a pre-existing, purchased/licenced, content. The crutial thing is how you use it - how creatively-lazily you use it, and how the gamers feel about it.
But I admit it: the article made me feel disapointed, as I thought RCMADIAX indeed try to become a better dev (but somehow can't get it right). Comparing his games to the links made me realise that their games are more or less ports. On the other hand, NintendoLife is really picky about this particular dev in the recent days, isn't it? NL, you could bring other devs, other examples - good and bad - and encourage us to discuss the topic, with RCMADIAX not being the main dish here.

@Capital70Q
Well, back then they were fresh and seemed to be a promising dev. With each release, people here got burned and began carefuly approach the dev until they uploaded so many low quality games that people either began ignoring the dev or make fun of them, on this site. And if bunch of people gather with the same state of mind, you will soon see a chain reaction of hateful comments, even from those who were neutral or positive towards the dev.

Dang, a quite drama is starting from 174th comment, I have mixed feelings towards NL and RCM, the whole situation is messy and I think that the both sides have their faults in this. The dev is lazy, but NL could handle the article better, as it brings lots of negativity to them... @Drumpler to 280th reply, I wouldn't worry it will affect RCMADIAX that much. People tend to forget stuff, facts getting more unclear until it all ends in a foggy, abstract image (that's why history books have a such inpact).
Right now emotions are dense but soon people will move on. RCM doesn't have many followers, so even if they lose some, new will come eventualy.
They may even benefit from the article. There are people who like cheaply made game, ya know, or people that are simply curious what is the fuzz about
Maybe that's not that kind of exposure they wanted, but it's better than nothing, I belive. At least for now.

Re: Nintendo of America Issues Takedown Request on AM2R, Ending the Project

RTT

@Phil_Kavadias Nintendo have the right to protect their IP and copyrighted content. But I think the collaboration between fan creators and N could be more profitable in a long term. Nintendo could monitor the quality of those games, if they are afraid that a fan game could lead to confusion or creating a bad image of a franchise. A separate section of fan made games/hacks could highlight that those games aren't from the main source (N) and that they are iterations of Nintendo's franchises. Making those games available only if you own the original game the 'remakes' are based on could secure their profit.
I'm not a Sonic fan but I live with a Sonic fan here. I heard that various Sonic hacks/mods are supported by Sega (if you own the original game), that there is one game that began as a Sonic hack but ended as a separate IP, and that the recently revealed, so appraised by gamers, new Sonic game (that one with 16bit graphics) was made by guys who were originaly working on hacks. You see diffirent approach here, and the reactions are positive.
Nintendo, on the other hand, gives us Mario Maker, as the only official support for... Mario mods? All the other games with copyrighted content is going to be down, sooner or later, regardless if it's free and made for parody purposes.

Re: Mythical Pokémon Victini Now Available in Latest Anniversary Distribution

RTT

@shaneoh Sorry for the confusion, I meant to reply to the other person ^^'
But I'll explain it more. There are few gaming related shops, and they usualy are small local shops with various second hand items.
Only supported by Czech distributor shops get limited amount of codes for printing. And each code is one per person (they remember who got a code - it's quite local). The codes are limited and the workers express that and they fuss about even if you have 2 games with you.
I think they removed the leaflets because there was... black market of codes, I guess? Or because printing and shipping the leaflets costed too much? I would have to ask some guys around to confirm that tho.

Re: Review: Pixel Paint (3DS eShop)

RTT

@Iggly I don't own Wii U, but on 3DS if you hold a shoulder button, and then touch a color on your canvas, you will pick the color, so colorpicker is in this version.

@Smokingspoon This software can export your pixel art as jpg (I was suprised seeing jpg, but so far the smallest pixel canvas gave me astonishingly clear results - gotta try this with bigger images/more colors and see how the compression goes).
I guess 3DS can only do and can only show [via Camera app] jpgs, while png is a more exlusive file format; I have only seen a possibility to save a screenshot as png in a homebrew program - never used that one tho. Posting a painting in Colors! Gallery turns it to png as well, when you want to download it from the site. Exporting it to SD card makes it jpg.

Pixel Paint has a disclaimer in the manual that Miiverse images will be upscaled for a better viewing, so that's kinda exused here.

Re: Review: Pixel Paint (3DS eShop)

RTT

It's a fine app, if you ask me. A bit barebones - sure - and it kinda looks homebrew-y - but I like it. The overall interface is good, nothing confusing and easy to learn, althrough I would change the way you can pick the colors, as holding-sliding seems a bit awkward, at first at least.
I really miss fliping/mirroring the canvas. Zoom out option and few more palettes would be appreciated as well. But aside those notes, the simplicity of the app gives it a specific charm.
