Re: Video: Unboxing and Testing the New Nintendo 2DS XL

RTT

@DarkScythe13 I think the best possible stylus placement (if you are right handed at least) must have DSi XL. It's just under your right palm, easy to get, easy to hide.
The probablity of the stylus falling from the side is also lower than from top/bottom.

Re: Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Confirmed for 17th November Release on 3DS

RTT

@DarkKirby They had no use of these animations in XY as all of the pokemon in overworld have way more chibi-like proportions and they animate differently - same goes for the trainers. The battle screen don't use walking or running, just standard battle poses and moves. Hence, there was no need to include them in the game. Amie also has the standard animations - no need for run and walk, only rest.

Every pokemon model up to gen 5 was finished as late as of 2012. But since developing both Pokedexes 3D could take longer, I cautiously assume 2010 is the earliest time where the first modern 3D model was created. And 2011 is the definite time when every gen 5 pokemon model was finished. The rest of the models followed as the new pokes were introduced.
They also had to do all the animations for them during that time, including walking and running - many animations to see if these models works fine, and to save themselves time and problems with re-modeling and re-animating the models in the future. Otherwise, adding walk and run cycles 5 years later would be counterproductive; you can as well create a new model from scratch.

If there's any other time possibility, where the animations could be created later, it is the development of Pokemon GO. But I find it farfetched. GO uses the same models which were used in XY, the very same which were used earlier in Pokedex 3D.

In pokemon games, people calling your first pokemon in your party is common. This happens at least since gen 3, if not earlier.

Re: Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Confirmed for 17th November Release on 3DS

RTT

@Jeronan That's exactly how it is. GF struggle to do a good 3D game atm.
@DarkKirby As I mentioned earlier, these animations were most probably done around 2011. The reason why they are in game, is the camera-photo feature in those games.
Pokemon do walk and run in the game - just only when you take a picture of them.
It's either a leftover (they forgot to remove the walk/run cycles) or they left it on purpose (to avoid the game crashing). Maybe they wanted to keep the animations with future in mind: more NPC overworld pokes strolling around you.

I really doubt they wanted to introduce the following buddy feature in SuMo. 1. that would add the polygon count to render, and we all know how "well" the rendering works in pkmn games. 2. Hit boxes would also be the problem (and that's another thing to calculate!). Some spots are pretty tight with their invisible walls. Not to mention collision detection between the models - it would end as a mess... Or the models would clip with each other, like in MMORPG.

Re: Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Confirmed for 17th November Release on 3DS

RTT

@Paddle1 Creatures. These models, up to gen 5, were ready in 2011.
Obviously, the new pokes were made later.
They were updated and re-textured for 3DS pokemon games and GO.

In fact, these leaked walk cycles people were posting, were most probably also made in 2011. Various pokemon can walk and run in SuMo (the camera feature), hence the animations were preprogrammed to all pokemon. Were the animations simply leftovers, or were they needed in the code to not crash the game?

Re: Pokémon Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon Confirmed for 17th November Release on 3DS

RTT

Just to remind you people. None of the 3D games on stationary consoles were developed by Gamefreak.
In fact, the hi-poli pokemon models you see everywhere (3DS, GO), they weren't made by Gamefreak as well.
Every 3DS pokemon game isn't perfect, loses frames, and the strict camera helps to cover unrendered space - and thanks to that the games can still work.

GF needs some time, a lot of time, to get their 3D right in their RPG (do you expect them to get back into 2D and sprites?). Right now, they're focused on gimmicks to buy some time.

Edit: I expect DPP remakes and maybe gen 8 somewhere around Feb 2019 on Switch.

Re: Review: Magikarp Jump (Mobile)

RTT

Ghibberish is what I saw in Rayman games, BK/YK, and Croc2. Calling that other languages ghibberish is not nice. But if that was a joke or an accident then just leave it guys.
It's not worth to argue over it on the net.

Anyway...
I thought the game would get 4/10 score. I don't even know what it is, aside from being it just another mobile game but with pokemon skin. So, is it really that above average (6/10), if you remove the pokemon theme?

Re: This One-Off RJ-Romain Jerome Pokémon Watch Costs Almost $260,000

RTT

Their page is written in the way I feel it is a joke. Kinda similar to those Kickstarter scams.

Tbh, the watch doesn't look impressive to me: another watch without numbers. And it uses some of the older artworks. For this price they could at least ask GF/Pokemon Company for custom artworks.
The Pikachu version looks more sleek though.

Re: Minecraft Plays a Prominent Role in New Japanese Commercial for Nintendo Switch

RTT

@cfgk24 After years I learned to approach Nintendo (or any other bigger company) with caution. I will never be positive towards their services, just cold calculations with my usual bitterness.

Wheter they repeat the failure with Wii U, or not, this doesn't bother me at this moment. It is however true that I don't except much at this moment (even from E3), but I would also like to be proven wrong in a nice suprise. And that's why it is better to not to be overly optimistic: you will never experience the feel of disappointment.

Re: Minecraft Plays a Prominent Role in New Japanese Commercial for Nintendo Switch

RTT

@cfgk24 So the IPs and new games aren't necessary.
All we Nintendo fans need are the same games, over and over again, all the same broken record, exluding maybe updated graphics and gimmicks.

There are always two points of an argument. Nostalgia is fine if not overdosed. Stagnacy is bad, so new stuff must be invented.
And the truth is that, in this commercial, albeit being extraordinary well made, we see nothing but ports and remasters.

Re: Xenoblade Chronicles 2 Composer Confirms Soundtrack Is Practically Complete

RTT

@Action51 I think the problem with the style change it's not only the generic anime faces, but also the body proportions as well. See that guy standing at the end? Looks like a child wearing over-the-top huge sci-fi gear. This actualy reminds more of me that guy from Kingdom Hearts. Never played that game, but the guy looks similarly cartoony.
Edits: better English spelling... (I hope).

Re: Nintendo Download: 6th April (Europe)

RTT

@AlexSora89 (Thanks for asking that question. I never thought about the Switch demos, but your question made me realise that this is an important issue. I dislike use-limited demos. I'm used to the good old unlimited demos. That's one plus for Switch, now.)

Re: Video: Here's A Closer Look At The New Cartoon Mega Man

RTT

@KidRad The cheesyness of those cartoons is actualy the good thing. And morals almost were always (maybe excluding the very early slapstick cartoons and the propaganda ones) used in those cartoons - in any cartoon that is targeted to younger audience, that is. Captain Planet with race-equality and envirormental dillemas, even the old MLP had some cute friendship thingy going on. Gummi Bears, with family bonds and dealing with others, etc. What's more, modern cartoons often repeat the same morals and stories. Simply because they are very... archetypical, for lack of the better English world (I'm not native English speaker). To the point, that some episodes may even look identical.

Either way, both have pluses and minuses. Though, as @Priceless_Spork, I prefer even the older cartoons more. The Flinstones and Tom & Jerry were always my favourites to watch, for example.

Re: Video: Here's A Closer Look At The New Cartoon Mega Man

RTT

I'm late to the party... Aww, would love to see that.

@KidRad They could be more talented back then (eg. Flash allows shortcuts, hand drawn doesn't), but they also had budged problems, maybe more than nowadays. There wasn't a dedicated cartoon TV program (like Dinsey chanel) - all cartoons were sponsored (aka they had to provide money to the sponsor), and were made to sell toys or merchendise of sort.
Depending on the cartoon, it maybe be pile of poop or a decent entertainment. Usually, it is a cheezy ride.

Nowadays there are more guys animating, there are faster tools and easier to allocate budged (which also means that creating a cartoon is cheaper). More cartoons can be 'artsy' (Samurai Jack), instead of being just a huge advert (pokemon). Sure, many of the cartoons of today have low standards, but just like in 80's, they are some pearls.

Re: Nintendo Download: 23rd March (Europe)

@subpopz I suppose that, if you are a Nintendo fan, you already own other systems. I mean, what other gamers will buy Switch at launch anyway?
Who buys any system at launch?
Diehard fans.

Re: New Sumo Digital Developer Diary Delves Into the Art of Snake Pass

RTT

Gotta watch that later. I dig this kind of stuff. I will get the game eventualy, as I'm getting more and more curious about it.

@Androgunther Well... snakes aren't exactly susceptible to character design - shape wise. Mainly because they don't have limbs and the long body is what visualy make them... well, snakes ;D

Re: Dolphin Emulator Now Allows Wii Shop Access and Purchases

RTT

Oh you people in comments hating emulation. Just wait, maybe in 50 years Wii will become a rare collector's machine, 1k bucks worthy, and half of them will be broken anyways :Y
Same goes with most of the discs, cartridges etc. All will end broken, or rotten. And obviously the eShops of today will not exist in the future as well - so no redownloads.

Unless someone release an old game on an official VC-like emulator, the only way to show your grandchildren your awesome games will be by playing a downloaded ROM on a unsupported emulator.

Re: The Nintendo Switch Can Be Hacked Via Known Webkit Vulnerability

RTT

@PlywoodStick
Untitled
Nintendo never advertised it. Knowing them, I wouldn't be suprised if they wanted to prevent kids from breaking the screens and avoid the parents rage. So they pretended it never existed.

Edit: and frankly, I cannot remind myself a single title which uses the feature. Besides the homebrew ofc. Which suggests that the big N gave a directive to the devs to ignore the pressure altogether. Or, that the devs were clueless about it (maybe the dev kits were purposely restricted, dunno).

Re: The Nintendo Switch Can Be Hacked Via Known Webkit Vulnerability

RTT

@Anti-Matter Homebrew is sometimes worth hacking. Remember one of the most succesful and popular eshop 3DS app called Colors! 3D?

Well, guess what. I'm also enjoying its first homebrew version on my NDS. Yeah, this is how it began - as a homebrew, way before 3DS was launched.

The sole reason I bought a flashcard and "phat" NDS was to run Colors!. I already had 3DS and DSi, but that old resistive screen which can detect the stylus pressure is just too good to let it ignore.
