Compared to the number of Wii U's in Japan I'd say those SM3DW numbers aren't bad. You know what's going to sell the Wii U in Japan? Mario Kart 8, SSB Wii U, X, SMT x FE... those types of games.
Furthermore, someday I will have a full Mario Kart Arcade GP DX setup is my basement! I will, indeed!
I have to agree with Cliff, although I'm sure a lot of "dude-bros" don't and probably never will. I seriously love Super Mario 3D World. Just played through the game with Mario and plan on doing the same with each individual character. I know there's no difference as far as story is concerned but I want to see what each character brings to the game as far as gameplay.
I plan on doing a full game run through with Luigi on New Years night to end the Year of Luigi in style. Exciting, right? Yeah. Well, I can't party like most people as I have to work on Holidays So that will be my party!
@Peach64 Same. It's not the art style that gets me, I actually don't mind that at all, I just don't like first person dungeon crawling heavy RPGs. I like how Persona is a mix of third person dungeons and other RPG aspects, such as school and social links.
@Rafie Agreed. Even if SM3DW doesn't greatly improve sales, now there are multiple critically acclaimed games worthy of a purchase on Wii U. When DKCTF comes out and people really want that game, they now say something along the lines of "Well, I could get SM3DW and Pikmin 3 as well", which gives them more initiative the purchase the console. It'll be the same when Mario Kart 8 is released. People will then have SM3DW, Pikmin 3, DCKTF, TW101, WW HD, etc... to think about on top of the new content. It's great to see, and hopefully the trend continues and sales pick up.
@Peach64 SM3DW is not akin to Galaxy. I have no idea how sales will go, but it has the potential to sell more than Galaxy because of a wider appeal.
I agree on Super Smash Bros. Wii U and Mario Kart Wii U though. SSBWiiU will sell well, but fighting games aren't for every type of gamer, even though SSB is the most popular these days. Mario Kart's always sell like hot-cakes, and I honestly think that will boost sales the most out of any game in the pipeline as it's a game for everyone.
If Nintendo really wants sales to skyrocket they need to get a legit Pokemon game on Wii U. That's honestly their "ace in the hole". Pokemon can change the fortune of a console. Nintendo is lucky to have that brand on top of Mario, Zelda, Donkey Kong, Kirby, etc.
@Peach64 Yeah, I picked up Tearaway too... and the Zelda 3DS XL lol. No XB1 for me though. Not yet, anyhow.
I know both systems will pan out eventually, but the problems being reported (specifically the XB1) are definitely a cause for concern. It's funny, to me, how everyone hates Nintendo yet their launch went the smoothest out of the three. The only problem with the Wii U was that massive day 1 system update.
I went to the XBOX1 launch at the local GameStop and picked up both SM3DW and ALBW at midnight last night. I played through the first world and loved every second of it. The levels are designed so that you can explore if you like, or you can speed run too. I plan on playing through the single player with each character eventually to test out their unique abilities. It's just an overall great experience thus far. The Captain Toad levels (or whatever they're called) are pretty fun as well!
Although Mario and Zelda titles would sell well regardless, this really goes to show how much of an impact reviews have on the general public. It's kind of sad, to be honest, that the media has so much sway on sales.
It was a good first year for Wii U, not great, but first years rarely are great. I bought Nintendo Land, Scribblenauts Unlimited, NSMBU, The Wonderful 101!, Pikmin 3, and The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, not even including some digital games from the eShop like NSLU. Here's to always improving, however, as even though I greatly enjoyed the first year there is plenty of room to grow. What is likely to be the best Wii U title yet is released this Friday! Hippity hip hooray!!!!
@DanMan82 lol. I'm going to invent an internet argument portal so when people start arguing they get sent to the same location, and are now face to face. I'd like to see how many people talk then.
@Yasume You haven't stated any facts at all. You don't know anyone on this website personally, so don't act like you do. I play games for games. Your opinions are fine, just be mature and show some respect. Is that so hard for people to do? Others would be more apt to respect your opinions if you did so.
Nintendo's games are what make them a special video game company, and the Wii U is a suitable console for them. It's not the best, technically speaking, but it's not bad by any means. I expect Nintendo to take full advantage of their hardware. I just wish they'd tap into some of the games that haven't been around for a while, such as Star Fox or Earthbound for example. New IPs with new gameplay and mechanics, not just new characters and names, would be welcome as well.
As far as sales goes, it really doesn't matter to me. As long as the console sells well enough for Nintendo to fully support it I couldn't care less if it "beats" PS4 and XB1 in worldwide sales. Would it be nice? Sure, but some gamers these days are, frankly, idiotic and only care about a console's horsepower. They won't pay attention to Nintendo unless they release something in line with the other companies. I suppose as long as it stays close to the other two it will be just fine.
@Barbiegurl777 Not sure if someone else has answered as I don't have time to skim the comments. If so, I apologize.
The main point of Miiverse is to talk about games openly in a Twitter style format. They are talking about personal messages here. Users will still be able to post on Miiverse from the 3DS, they just won't be able to send personal messages to other users.
@citizenerased I think you're right, as it's mainly on touch based platforms sans PC. I do wonder, however, if a more traditional control scheme is going to be available.
@Spoony_Tech I know you were half joking, but it's never a question of whether Nintendo is in trouble or not. What people occasionally question are their home consoles. They always have money in the banana stand aka games and handhelds.
@Aaronzord Mega Evolutions are awesome, but I have to agree on Amie. It's just super cheesy and reminds me of that silly mini game in the 3DS version of Harvest Moon: A Tale of Two Towns. I had to do it to get Sylveon, but I won't ever do it again lol.
This happened long ago in my area, although I knew they kept some stores around in the bigger markets. I always went to a rental store by my house called Video Villager back in the day. They had an awesome selection of NES games when I was a kid. I'd ride my bike and rent a game for $2-3, spending what seemed like hours perusing their selection, and ride home as fast as I could. When I got home I'd run to the basement and blow the cartridge out, nearly passing out from lack of oxygen. I haven't rented a game in idk how long, but that's how I used to roll. I'd beat games in 3 days or so, and if I couldn't and liked them game I'd rent it again. The only games I'd buy, or rather my parents would buy for me, were the uber popular games like Mario, Donkey Kong, Zelda, Contra, ect... /reminiscing
@SirQuincealot- Toki Tori is an amazing game.... They know not to release a bunch of great stuff on the same day as they would eat each others sales. Basically today is Toki Tori HD and the HD Wii Sports games. Those are quality releases. Whether you like them or not is your opinion.
@Senario Firstly, no one ever said they should advertise during The Walking Dead, just that XBOne had a ton of commercials during Sunday's episode. I agree with that statement from Panasonic, but the product has to be in a certain position for that to be true. The problem is no one is talking about the Wii U, so Nintendo needs to make people start talking about it with great games (most important) and then advertising, then they can slow down. Even their best consoles advertised, and both PS4 and XBOne are advertising as well. It's just how it's done in the industry. After the console is in enough homes word of mouth can be leaned on more.
Furthermore, parents might not be watching shows like The Walking Dead WITH their kids, but they are still watching it none the less. It takes a good mix. The kids see it on a channel like Nickelodeon and the parents see it on ABC. The child comes to the parent and says "I want a Wii U" and the parent knows what one is and hopefully purchases it.
@gatorboi352 XBOne was all over the place on AMC during The Walking Dead too. I don't see why Nintendo can't advertise Super Mario 3D World during The Agents of Shield on ABC or something like that...
Why doesn't the Nintendo marketing team realize they can and should appeal to both families and gamers alike? When at the height of their success they appealed to everyone, not just the nice little mommy and daddy with two kids living in a house with a white picket fence families (which isn't the norm here in the states anymore). They should start trying to appeal to the mid twenties to mid thirties demographic on commercials just as they do to the family demographic. Bring back "Your playing with power!"
