@Gioku Very rarely is something truly innovative. Most of the time games people consider innovative is a combination of different genres, or taking a mechanic from one genre and adding it to another. A good example of a good game doing this is Borderlands adding action RPG mechanics to a FPS. It's nice to strive for unknown territory, but it's not nice to stress over such things and create a bad game because of it.
@Gioku I hear ya, and honestly I wasn't trying to be mean. As I said, however, let your art speak for itself. It wasn't the lack of ideas for the GamePad that bothered me or any other self respecting game designer. Being a good game designer is hard. People think "Well, I play lots of games so I can be a game designer," and that's not true. There's so much more to it than that. There is no need to consider yourself anything other than what and who you are. "Innovative" is a word designers like to throw around like the government throws around "transparency" these days.
@Gioku What? That sounds completely arrogant and ignorant all in one. Other people and your products will decide if you are an "innovative game designer". I consider myself a super hero, but that doesn't mean that I am. Just Beiber considers himself a talent, but that doesn't mean that he is.
Furthermore, the GamePad is full of creative potential. If you say you are a "game designer" and can't think of anything to do with it I feel bad for the future of the game industry.
I'm not trying to be mean, but when game designers say things like that it grinds my gears. We are supposed to be artists. Real artists don't go around tooting their own horns, saying things like "hey, look at me! I'm innovative!" Don't start acting like a musician.
@ThomasBW84 Any mention of that game makes me feel good about it. It seems to disappear every now and again haha. Anyhow, I'm thinking about backing Mighty No. 9. If I do so it will be my first time backing a game on Kickstarter.
Thanks for asking about Kaio: King of Pirates Tom. I've been interested in that since the beginning, and really hope it does finally get released in 2014.
Just ALBW for me! It looks awesome from what I've seen. I'll wait and see how Mario Party: Island Tour does with reviews, but I got bored with MP9 pretty quick.
It's good news, but us early adopters should be compensated somehow. I can't complain directly to Nintendo, however, because of future interests. Someone else do it for me, please
I have no problem with this, as it's clearly marketed at children and gives an affordable option for parents when Pokemon comes out and their kid is begging them for a 2/3DS.
@rjejr I'm not chastising them at all, I just agree with Peach when she says the date could have been better. It's not a big deal. I can guarantee that a lot of Wii U owners also have other systems as well. If you don't understand that I don't know what to tell you. I love Nintendo just as much as anyone, I'm just not blind. Anyhow, happy gaming! I'm definitely looking forward to TW101, as I know you are as well.
@rjejr Did I say it was? It's still up against it, and you know GTA is one of the biggest series on any console. I'm getting TW101 on launch day so relax, and stay out of mine and Peach's conversations please . Your unnecessary argument is weak buddy, and 2 days isn't really much time between releases. It doesn't matter if it's the same genre, it's still a monetary based decision for gamers.
@Peach64 The new XCOM is terrible. I'm a big fan of the strategy games but this new shooter is just plain bad. I wish it was better. I agree, however, that last week would have been perfect. In the States it's getting released the same week as GTAV!
@AyeHaley I can't tell if it's a special Wii U or just WW HD thrown in with a Wii U Deluxe model. It looks more like the latter. If it was a green Wii U though, I'd double dip
Excellent review as always Tom! I've gone from uninterested to completely excited for this game over the course of the last few months. Your review confirms that my transformation was warranted.
As some have said: It's either those two Pokemon are confirmed for Smash Bros. or they are creating some type of open-world Wii U game. I really hope it's the latter. A good or great Pokemon game on Wii U would certainly help sales. I haven't played a Pokemon console game since Snap! on N64.
Picked it up today, along with a Black 3DS XL (which was a total spur of the moment buy lol). I can't decided whether to wait until I finish SMTIV or just dive in...
@DePapier Post #6- I agree. Kamiya-san has a great sense of humor, and I think repeating the release date over and over again was kind of a joke, while also serving an obvious purpose. He cracks me up all the time on twitter. People ask him the dumbest questions.
Oh no! We have to wait a few weeks longer than EU for this game?! Sarcasm I don't believe EU even has a release date for SMTIV yet. Let's put things in perspective here fellow NA's. It's not a huge deal. Pikmin 3 and Mario & Luigi Dream Team both came/come out this month. Iwata-san is right when he says gamers have insatiable appetites.
Having said that; I love how humble Nintendo is. "Thank you for your patience", they graciously say, and I thank them for their kindness. The problem is, nary anyone has any patience these days. With college and work I have learned how to be patient and be grateful for what they give us. I remember, just like pepperidge farm remembers, when Earthbound was nearly impossible to afford for the blue collar gamer. Fast forward to when they finally released it, and all of a sudden people were complaining about the $9.99 price... shakes head
I just hope it makes it to North America in early 2014. EU has been getting games early with Nintendo for a few months now, so good for them. They were getting left behind quite a bit, and still are in some cases.
Hopefully the Wii U can pick up steam in EU, as sales have been awfully weak over there. It's not entirely their fault, however. Nintendo needs to deliver some games for the Wii U. Pikmin 3 was a good start.
@Legromancer The day that video games become interactive movies will be a horrible day for gamers and video games in general. What sets video games apart from other forms of art like film is their gameplay, drama, and psychology. Nintendo knows this. If you want interactive stories, you and David Cage will get along great. Sure, designers need to take advantage of the newer technologies like realistic physics and lighting techniques, but if they forget what is really important... Well, I don't want to think about that. Being a designer myself, I'd rather have Nintendo do what they do well and Sony do what they do well and leave it at that.
@Nintenjoe64 I hear that Joe, but there is always plenty of room for quality platformers with different ideas and mechanics. We just don't need the "been there, done that, new skin" platformers. Some JRPG's or SRPG's would be nice. I know there are a few in development already for the eShop.
@theblackdragon Exactly! A super powered console with amazing specs means nothing with no games to play on it. If Mario Kart 8 arrives and they tease the next true Zelda game for Wii U and people still aren't buying the console, then and only then will I be worried for Nintendo.
That is totally unreasonable. Nintendo just needs good games on the Wii U, and bada bing bada boom, their fortunes will change. I wouldn't mind if they released a new home console in 4 years or so, but anything before then is too soon.
IGN is garbage. At one time it was a good site, but is now filled with terrible editors that have barely any talent and comment trolls. I left that hole a while ago, never to return. They have been known, and this is fact, to take money from developers to give good reviews as well. There's absolutely no journalistic integrity to be found anywhere on that website, so anything they or anyone affiliated with them say should go through one ear and out the other.
@Finntendo and @Sogeman Ok, I had forgotten they said that.
Any additional dungeons would enhance the game, as they were supposed to be there in the first place. However, it's not that big of a deal, the game is still good.
@Starzsixty9 The last one I bought and played is Yellow I think the series has advanced enough for me to be interested again, and by all I have seen and read X/Y should be good.
@Peek-a-boo I was hoping they would take the time and add the cut dungeons, but alas... I think they are charging $49.99 however, which isn't quite full price, but more than other HD remasters.
I'll just take a new entry on the 3DS or Wii U, or both. They should bring over DQVII for 3DS and DQX for Wii U, however. I'd buy both of those in an instant.
Like many others have said, I'll wait until the holiday season before I pick up another XL. I have a reg Black 3DS, and a Pikachu LE 3DS XL. A LE Zelda XL would be great, as would that LE Luigi XL. Luckily I've got friends in the business that can guarantee me the LE models if I want one. Who knows though. I might get this one to use it and keep my other ones in the box, collector style.
I was hoping for the Luigi LE 3DS XL, but I haven't heard anything about it and M&L Dream Team arrives in a few weeks. I'd get that and the Black XL model as well if they brought it to the US. They'd be nice additions to my Pikachu XL and my original Black 3DS. I'd get one of the Pokemon X/Y bundles, but Pikachu is my favorite so I'm good.
I'd get Kid Icarus, but I already have the 3D Classics version on my 3DS. It sure would be nice if Nintendo connected the Wii U and the 3DS so we users would only have to purchase a Virtual Console game once and have it on both systems, wouldn't it? So long as the game is available on both consoles, that is how it should be.
After some deep thought, I'd be up for an HD remake if it didn't take away from one of Nintendo's crucial first or second-party developers. Perhaps have Sega do it again, this time in HD, after they release the M&S Olympic game. Sonic Lost World is looking really good, so I trust the upgrade in their hands.

Re: New Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy Release Hinted at in Trademark
The original is intense with headphones. FF has some of, if not the best music in video games, and the gameplay is fun in this game as well.
