This is my third time playing this gem, and I'm absolutely loving it. Taking in the enhancements on the Switch has allowed me to see a lot more details that I completely missed on both the Wii and 3DS, particularly when it comes to the sense of scale in the environments. Being able to see further into the distance and take in more detail of the towering elements above you (particularly during a thunderstorm) just feels so much more overwhelming now than it did before, even more than when it was in 3D.
I don't have as much gaming time as I used to with my plate full of personal projects, but I'm in no rush to finish this game. I want it to last.
To all those complaining about the price of these collections:
Considering one of the games on the Console edition is a title that was only printed in 800 copies and goes for between $1.5K - $2K when one shows up at auction — not to mention the other titles in the collection ALL go for between $40 - $100 for their original carts nowadays — paying $60 for the set is not that damn bad. Especially since they've all aged very well and are still extremely fun.
@nessisonett Oh, definitely! Unfortunately I'm mostly self-taught and my first years of experience were just in using plain text editors to hand-type code (back in the mid 90's, through the days of Geocities), so old habits definitely die hard. I always forget those tools are available, lol.
As a web developer, I once spent 6 hours in PHP poring over a custom CMS I was building because it wouldn't display properly, all due to a single misplaced semicolon.
Also this sounds remarkably similar to how a mistyped function call caused all of the enemies in Alien: Colonial Marines to walk mindlessly into walls instead of being actually intelligent and deadly.
In the future, the human race will not be destroyed by a meteor or climate change, but by an army of robots thrown into a murderous rage by a typo in a single line of code.
@sixrings There's a pretty significant difference between designing a piece of hardware in the same category as another, and blatantly stealing design, form and function from an existing industry leader. This isn't a case of them just having a similar idea; Alienware has made several statements SPECIFICALLY mocking the Nintendo Switch and directly comparing it to their "superior" version, piece by identical piece, while also somehow having the balls to claim their design is "unique and innovative." They're basically taking Nintendo's blueprints, crossing out their name and adding their own to claim credit for its design.
You can't sit there and say theft of intellectual property is just good competition. Alienware will (and should) be sued over this.
A reminder that it's been reported this thing may only get around two hours of battery life in its current form. And that's only if Nintendo doesn't take them to court the moment they actually try to bring this walking patent infringement to the market.
@OrangeSoda That was my first thing to check as well. I'm a huge fan of the Funimation dub, but it isn't considered canon at all, so sadly that completely kills any chance of the games ever including that same style of humor or any of those references. Even if it's an official US port like this.
I doubt we'll ever see a Funimation-branded Shin Chan game here in the US, but I would buy it in a heartbeat if it happened.
I immediately thought of that Game Grumps commercial for these that was officially sanctioned by Nintendo, uploaded on their channel, and still is one of the greatest things ever.
These are two of the absolute WORST games in the NES library. Good grief, they could have skipped this month entirely and it would have been a better choice.
Honestly this makes me happy, if only because we can look forward to Danny doing a second superpowered playthrough of Zelda 2 on Game Grumps, like they did with the original Zelda SP.
My hopes/predictions, if other non-Nintendo franchises (ie Banjo Kazooie) aren't off the table, and their existence as assist trophies don't block their selection:
1: Shantae 2: Rex (with Pyra/Mythra following his movements in background) 3: Spring Man from ARMs 4: Zero (MegaMan X)
And what I think would be super fun, but highly unlikely:
5: Baby Bowser, from SNES Yoshi's Island, if anything just so his final Smash could be his final boss form from the game, approaching steadily from the background.
This also makes me think Kamek would make a fun assist trophy, who sprinkles your character with magic and makes them temporarily huge.
Ok... I have always DREAMED of a MegaMan compilation that had you playing through all of the original titles within the confines of a single adventure, collecting all the Robot Master abilities into a Master Arsenal and taking on an entire gauntlet of bosses before fighting Wily. This sounds like it might actually be close to that. Holy crap.
I mean this was already a day one purchase from me, but DUDE. This sounds too freaking cool.
Man, I hope this one has a vertical play option in desktop mode.
On a related note, I've actually been wanting to play a good hybrid shmup/RPG lately (like one with an actual story and good sense of leveling/progression with each playthrough) but I haven't found any really good ones yet. Can anyone toss me any suggestions? Platform doesn't matter, console/handheld/PC, all good.
All I know is that the fact that this exists is now making me imagine the very real possibility of an expanded remake of Super Metroid on the Switch, possibly incorporating some of mythos revealed in the Prime 3 logs, and how many heads would explode if that ever happened.
I'm also curious if we'll see any planned elements or mechanics from the ill-fated "Project Dread" in this entry.
This entire concept of the Splatfest dictating the plot of the sequel had made me love the Splatoon series even more. I really, REALLY hope they push the franchise in the future and not let it fizzle out like Metroid or F-zero.
I'm just hoping Nintendo someday returns to the live stage presentation for E3 rather than a pre-recorded stream. I actually enjoy watching the audience reactions to huge announcements (if there are any).
So, they basically pulled a DoAX, just ditched the smoke & mirrors of keeping the series in the Action Game genre and went straight into "Dating Sim with HD JiggleRumble."
This is extremely reminiscent of the devs behind Project Cars and their open mocking of Nintendo fans on Twitter after announcing the cancellation of the Wii U version. "Buy a real console" and whatnot.
And much like that game, I also will not be buying this one, even though I had planned to do so. Horrible PR just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.
@rjejr Hey. HEY. Metroid Prime Pinball was actually VERY well done and extremely fun. But it was also bookended in its release by other legitimate Metroid games, so it has that advantage over Federation Force.
The headline for this made me worry for a sec that the Dementium 2 Remastered release was no more, but it sounds like that's not the case! If anything it seems this will allow them to focus more attention on more titles in the future, which I fully support. These guys are talented.
I just want them to give us the next big Nintendo Direct already. I've heard it's coming up in September, but does anyone know a more concrete date for it yet? We're tired of rumors, just show us the dang system!
I wouldn't be so hurt by this game's existence if Nintendo would just confirm that an actual legitimate entry in the Metroid series proper was in development. Whether a 2D classic style or 3D ala Prime, we just need to know that another Samus-focused game is on its way. Taking 6 years to give us a new chapter only to have it be a multiplayer-focused spinoff with a freaking Arena sport minigame attached is an outright insult to fans of the series.
I don't have any plans on giving this game a chance, because to me, this isn't Metroid. I'm hoping Nintendo gets the message by the poor sales this game will inevitably generate, in addition to the flood of dislikes on YouTube and negative press.
To those curious: "Route Focused" likely means a return to the early days of the franchise, where you choose a path through the game via branches that open by pulling off shortcuts or special achievements within each level. To me this sounds like the main game mode might have a more open level-select system in place for progression, i.e. an "overworld"-style level map more akin to modern Mario series titles.
@amiiboacid It was "Poo," actually. A word Nintendo themselves have used in many games. And regardless, this had nothing to do with their TOS, since his entire gallery of levels — not just the ones with "Poo" in the title — was completely gutted without notice or explanation. All of his stars and reputation, gone overnight.
And he's hardly the only one. Check any Mario Maker forum and you'll see this whole "deletion of levels without reason" is a growing problem. Nintendo has built this amazing online community around the game, but their completely inept mismanagement is going to kill it.
Dementium!! YESSSSSS. Well, there goes my evening after work! Can't WAIT to play that again. Then this weekend will be dominated by Xenoblade, and next Tuesday is Earth Defense Force 4 on PS4... wow, what a great week in game releases this is.
@JHardin1112 I can sympathize with you. I've lived just outside DC for almost my entire life and couldn't be more tired of all the monuments and museums. Every single school field trip was spent at the Smithsonian and after the first few times, it just loses most of its lustre.
Then after my wife (then-fiance) moved in after college, she couldn't WAIT to go to DC and see everything since she's from the south. I have to admit, her excitement at seeing everything for the first time definitely rekindled my interest in it, too. I can't wait to take our kids there in the future (at least until they get tired of it too, hehe).
Not gonna lie, I've been enjoying the hell out of this game, and I don't have kids (yet). Eventually I'll grab everything, but right now I'm more concerned with just unlocking access to each area first. And anxiously awaiting the Ghostbusters level pack.
Dang it, looks like Dementium Remastered missed its October release window. I really had my fingers crossed hoping to see it on the list this week after they had hyped it up to be in time for Halloween.
Guess I'll just keep holding onto that credit on my 3DS for one more week...
Do we have any confirmation yet that Dementium Remastered will be making it in time for next week's download update? I seriously cannot WAIT to play through those games again.
Honestly, not disappointed in the slightest! I preferred the Nintendo-themed costumes in Bayonetta over the fanservice-y ones, too. Those outfits belong more in DOA or Senran Kagura, not Fatal Frame.
I still will be incredibly surprised if we see the NX get a 2017 release, let alone 2016. At MOST we'll see an unveiling during an early-year Nintendo Direct, then a reveal of the proper name, full functionality demos, and preliminary games list at E3.
I could see them giving the Wii U another 18 months after the NX's first showcase before releasing it. To do otherwise would risk alienating the customers who invested in the Wii U.
I'll go against the grain along with the minority and admit that I actually REALLY enjoyed Other M. Terrible cutscenes and laughable dialogue aside, it actually was a solid game with traditional Metroid elements and some pretty amazing boss battles (particularly the hidden post-endgame easter egg boss). If this turns out to be true I'll happily download it for another playthrough.
