It may be 'Nintendo Direct Day', but we still have a Nintendo Download Update to look forward to, even if there are rumours of blocky surprises still to come. This week's line-up in North America has some varied and quirky offerings across both Wii U and 3DS, including a free-to-play offering from the big N that launched in recent days. So, let's get to it.
Missed the European Nintendo Download Update earlier in the week? Oh you forgetful ninny! Never mind, the details are all right here.
Wii U eShop
Girls Like Robots (Popcannibal, $6.99) - A title with a weird name and a quirky premise, it appears to be a puzzle experience in which you place characters onto grids while matching their requirements: rather like creating a seat layout for a wedding. It looks bizarre but charming, so we'll try to be liked and write up a review.
Word Party (Lightwood Games, $14.99) - This series of 28 minigames accommodates up to five players at once - using Wii Remotes and the GamePad - and plays around with various wordy premises. There are crosswords and word searches, of course, but also quirky minigames such as "Whack-A-Vowel" and "Space Blaster". We had a brief play of this at EGX in September and found ourselves having quite a lot of fun; we'll bring you a review soon.
Test Your Mind (XenoHorizon, $2.99) - As the name suggests this is a compilation of puzzles and minigames to put your brain to the test, and naturally it supports two player action for some couch multiplayer. We'll test our minds for a review.
Wii U Virtual Console
Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX (Konami, $7.99) - This is a loose port of the SNES classic Contra III: The Alien Wars and originally hit the Game Boy Advance in 2002. It's far from a straight conversion of the 16-bit classic, however; the screen-clearing Mega Bombs have been removed, as has the dual-wield ability which was so handy on the SNES. These omissions are balanced somewhat by the fact that the player can now lock their character's aim while moving, and is also given a opportunity to revert to their previous weapon after picking up a fresh one. We'll blast away some foes for a review.
Wii U Retail Download
Monster High New Ghoul in School (Little Orbit, $39.99) - Available from 17th November.
Wii U eShop Temporary Discounts
Affordable Space Adventures (KnapNok Games, $15.99 until 26th November, normally $19.99)
Roving Rogue (Padaone Games, $5.99 until 26th November, normally $7.99)
Turtle Tale (Saturnine Games, $1.79 until 26th November, normally $2.99)
BLOK DROP U (RCMADIAX, on discount until 6th January)
DON'T CRASH (RCMADIAX, on discount until 6th January)
Wii U Demo
Word Party (Lightwood Games, free)
3DS eShop
Nintendo Badge Arcade (Nintendo, free) - Released earlier this week, this is a simple crane game in which you try to grab badges (and accompanying themes) which can then be used to customise your HOME screen. You get five free practice attempts per day in which you can win 'plays', otherwise you need to buy the right to pick up some badges. We'll work up some impressions soon.
Johnny's Payday Panic (Office Create, $3.99) - Effectively Capitalism: The Game, you work a menial job in the food industry in order to earn money and buy fancy things; this happens through what looks like a series of frantic minigames. Apparently your wage goes up and down depending on performance and the boss can call you in at any time - even though it's breaking every employment law under the sun we'll get working on a review.
Horse Life 4 (Ravenscourt, $14.99) - No, this isn't an unexpected change of direction for our upcoming re-design for the site, but rather another sim game where you train a horse for competitions and events. We'll see whether it's a yay or neigh (sorry) in a review.
3DS Retail Downloads
Stella Glow (Atlus, $49.99) - Developed be Imageepoch, your world-saving quest tasks you with earning the trust and help of musical witches, which is as good a job as any. Blending traditional RPG ideas with a musical focus gives this one a bit of a unique twist, and we were impressed when we gave our first impressions. Available from 17th November.
Moco Moco Friends (Aksys Games, $39.99) - Fans of RPGs in which you develop teams of critters to explore and then fight other teams of critters are quite well served on the 3DS, but Aksys Games is pitching its own release into this crowded market; it's aiming for plenty of cuteness with this one. Available from 17th November.
Monster High New Ghoul in School (Little Orbit, $39.99) - Available from 17th November.
3DS eShop Temporary Discounts
Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millennium Girl (Atlus, on discount from 16th November to 30th November)
Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold: The Fafnir Knight (Atlus, on discount from 16th November to 30th November)
Turtle Tale (Saturnine Games, $1.79 until 26th November, normally $2.99)
Toys vs. Monsters (EnjoyUp Games, $0.99 until 10th December, normally $3.99)
3DS HOME Themes
Stella Glow: "The Witches and Bubu" (Atlus)
3DS Demos
Johnny's Payday Panic (Office Create, free)
Samurai Defender (CIRCLE Entertainment, free)
In addition don't forget that Affordable Space Adventures has a notable update and extra content going live alongside its discount.
That's everything for this week's Nintendo Download Update in North America - let us know what you plan to pick up in the poll and comments below.

I'm starting to lose hope that Dementium Remastered is ever going to actually come out.
Just makes me want a new Contra.
Heh, I wonder if the direct is gonna announce a revival of the 3ds virtual console... Nvm I'm dreaming too big...
stella and the badge thingy for me today
Wow, what a poor one. Thats alright though. I've got enough to do already
@PeterAndCompany Follow Jools Watsham on Twitter. He updates all the time. It's passed the first lot check.
@PeterAndCompany - per Jool Watsham's twitter feed it has been accepted into NOA's final lot check.
Everyone, keep in mind that more eShop goods can potentially be announced in the Direct today. This may not be everything.
I think I may grab Affordable Space Adventure
Hopefully badge arcade is on the European 3ds, I haven't checked yet as I don't have it with me.
I would say Badge Arcade, but I already DL'd it just Tuesday night, so...
I am curious in Moco Moco Friends, though. I hope Nintendo Life gets a review for it put soon...
Hopefully we get Minecraft 'cause otherwise there's nothing. I'll probably get Stella Glow at some point when the price is right, though. I liked the demo.
Nothing for me. I'm kind of hoping a pleasantly surprising download comes out of today's Direct.
Weaksauce! I downloaded the Badge Arcade Collection yesterday; so the only thing that can make this week any good (for me at least) is if the Nintendo Direct today announces anything for the eShop. Just wish the Direct wasn't at 5pm est
I'll wait till after the direct to buy contra.
Stella Glow but definitely not download. As a matter of fact Best Buy has made me go back to physical for retail. Can't beat 20% off!
where is RE 4?
"Stella Glow (Atlus, $49.99)" Yeah.. these are one of those times where I would buy physical over digital since I would get more goodies for the same price with the Launch Edition.
I can't help but feel that I seen "Girls Like Robots" a long time ago on adult swim games. I have to check to see if it's the same game I'm thinking of.
Edit: Yep it's the same one.
Think I still want Contra 3 on SNES instead, just never got the chance to buy it. Still, glad to see another Konami release. Thought the Direct was in December? I'll be off work in time to watch it. I hope they do ok without Mr, Iwata's expertise.
Today's the direct so don't be surprised if there ends up being more today.
Contra Advance still worth it, if I already own Contra 3 on Wii VC?
This can go from a poor week to a great week if they have Smash DLC and Minecraft hitting after the Direct.
Joining in the "there better be something in the ND tonight" parade.
I'll still be shocked if ti's Minecraft though. Unless it's Story Mode.
Free download of AC:aF maybe. That game comes out tomorrow, yet Nintendo doesn't even acknowledge it's existence in it's twitter feed or on it's news page. TOMORROW.
http://www.nintendo.com/whatsnew/#all
https://twitter.com/NintendoAmerica
There was 1 "Nintnendo Minute" video but that was more about HHD than it was about AC:aF. amiibo and cards got almost all of the spotlight. The only thing that was shown of the game was the box.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0jK_K1HKXE8&feature=youtu.be
TOMORROW. It almost has to be free tonight.
Though I'll gladly accept an XCX demo that was in the leak rumour.
Already picked up Badge Arcade.
Yeah, this is pretty lame but I figure that the Direct will have some surprises. I mean, Minecraft is likely coming out. Hopefully they throw some surprise VC or first party eShop titles too. I'd love SNES Remix for sure.
Still no Dementium?!?! LAME!!!
Meh. Nothing again for me
@PeterAndCompany What about Treasurenauts...
looking forward to Stella Glow after playing that demo
I got Girls Like Robots a while back in a Humble Bundle, and I had a lot of fun with it. I thought the humor and gameplay were great, and thought it would be a good fit for the Wii U, so I'm glad that it's finally coming to the eshop.
That said, because I already have it, I probably won't be getting anything but free demos this week (unless something cool comes from the Direct).
@DefHalan Not really, in my opinion. The full Contra 3 on SNES was much better - "EX" was great at the time for GBA owners to have some old-school Contra on the go.
I think Nintendo will announce Star Fox SNES for the Wii U Virtual Console during todays Nintendo Direct. It'll be a way of making up for the delay of Star Fox Zero.
(Hey, I can dream can't I? )
Yay! Another VC game that is a port of a game already on there!
Do we know how much the Etrian Untold games will be discounted?
@rjejr It is on the home page of nintendo.com under the top banner. It does exist!
@PeterAndCompany If you follow Jools on Twitter, he said Dementium Remeaster is stuck in lot check, Nintendo keeps finding bugs.
Got Nintendo Badge game already, might get Minecraft for Wii U if they announced that at the direct.
Girls Like Robots is pretty weird, have it on PC. I really can't say if it's good or not, it's just really weird.
I'll try the Badge game. Stella Glow someday... or if I bothered enough to go to a game store and spot a launch edition. Moco Moco Friends, I don't know... it's cute and charming to the point that I wanted it, but too girly for my man ego...
Nothing again, back to the Xbox One.
Contra!!! You know the NES game that everyone loves. Raced to load the page only to be met with, Contra Advance: The Alien Wars EX. You know, the Contra game that is an inferior port of a game you can already purchase....
Seriously, please put the GBA stuff on the handheld console where it belongs and just put the full console games on the Wii U.
For the same price Stella Glow goes for here in Canada, I was able to pay off my SAO: Lost Song preorder. 70$ digitally for a portable title? Save yourselves the hassle and get a boxed copy with all the bells and whistles for the same price.
Oh and Contra 3 EX also eliminates the overhead stages that were present in the SNES version. So it's just side scrolling (which means the only really unique stage is the Alien ship fight that scrolls left and right).
Just the inevitable Smash Bros DLC that's announced after the Direct for me this week.
Johnny's payday panic as no one buys the game!
Got the badge arcade and might get something else if that said something else comes after the direct, other then that the badge thing is the only thing I want this week.
Getting badge arcade because I spent way too much time on it with my jpn 3ds.
@mjharper OK, the game barely exists. How about it's "marketing campaign" doesn't exist.
Just the Nintendo Direct for me.
I will look into the Unfinished Swan on PS4 actually.
Nintendo seems to think that customers are more than happy to re-purchase a game already available on the e-shope. Thanks for another lame vc release NOA.
We picked up the Nintendo Badge Arcade last night. It was cool but nothing to get excited about. I'm not sure if we'll ever invest money into the badges but who knows. If you buy 10 turns, you unlock a theme background so the price isn't horrible if you've already invested in themes before.
I'm with everyone else who is saying that more will be announced tonight.
Seriously I should have imported american 3DS instead of buying european
Has QUBE been released in NA yet?
@dkxcalibur The annoying thing is that none of the themes you get there have any music
@manu0 Wow, I didn't know that! That sucks, but I guess you trade that for customization in themes. Although, I guess all themes are technically customize-able now.
What a joke.
Nothing this week. I'd rather have physical copies of Stella Glo and Etrian Odyssey 2 Untold.
@KnightRider666 Exactly what I thought XD
@Captain_Gonru "I've been standing there for months already."
Says the man w/ the high pile of cards while he waits in line for amiibo.
Maybe you can write off the cards on HHD, aF is the game pushing the amiibo. No game, no amiibo. Every AC amiibo you buy is tainted.
I don't want the game either, but I don't want Mario Party or any other board game. I don't like video board games. And I don't like AC either. But I would like the company to promote its own games.
so annoyed that nintendo has dropped SNES VC games
Folks really shouldnt get too hyped about this NDirect. Smash DLC, a more in-depth look at XCX, and maybe tidbits about Yokai Watch/Mario Tennis/Animal Crossing.
Anything else (besides more F2P content) would surprise me, they seem to be hunkering down til March.
I think it's great that they rereleased the same contra game; I just wish they would do that with Street Fighter!!
Happy Nintendo Direct day!
The 3DS VC is the red headed stepchild of Nintendo, neglected and unloved.
Guess I'll try the badge thing.
Assuming Moco Moco Friends isn't some brilliant gem, I'll probably pick it up for $15 or so if it reviews well.
just the badge thingy
@Gerbwmu Affordable Space Adventures is a really good game and really shows off how the gamepad can make a game unique and interesting. I hope it's not overlooked come awards time.
@ultraraichu It's Atlus. Don't even bother getting physical OR digital right now. It'll be on sale on the eShop soon enough for $30. Then $20....and the occassional $15.
@Captain_Toad Excellent guess sir.
@TeeJay Good point. You would think I would of learn my lesson by now with Code of Princess, Shin Megami Tensei IV, and Attack on Titan.
Another week of nothing worth a popcorn fart for 3DS, Nintendo. Way to go.
@JustinH heh, I guess ya can't dream too big.
