Re: E3 2016: Sony Boss Shuhei Yoshida Seems Pretty Hyped About Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

NodesforNoids

As an aside, it makes me happy that Zelda, Horizon, Evangelion, Darkstalkers (Night Warriors), and Shuhei Yoshida can all be part of the same discussion. It gives me hope that people still care about important, neglected, beautiful things. It's disheartening to always talk about money and the politics of the gaming industry, as much as I feel it is my duty as a writer to speak to the stark reality presented.

Re: E3 2016: Sony Boss Shuhei Yoshida Seems Pretty Hyped About Zelda: Breath Of The Wild

NodesforNoids

I still like some FPS campaigns, and Horizon looks like that, in 3rd person, in a long format.
I definitely see the comparison to this Zelda and the Xenoblade series too.
Guerrilla was clearly inspired by Zelda, but without a Wii U, I'm only looking forward to Horizon between the 2.
Not that Zelda doesn't look fun, just that rebuying a system for 1 game makes no sense to me.
After their recent E3 sale, my PS4 collection is up to 58 games, 17 on the backlog.
By this time next year, I can't imagine that number being much lower.

Re: E3 2016: Brandwatch Data Shows The Legend of Zelda Dominating Social Media During E3

NodesforNoids

A last gen, Wind Waker meets poor man's Skyrim is the 'best of E3'? This is just a sign that the vocal minority is to blame for social media turning into the breeding ground for shameless self-promotion and desperate fanyboy ranting.
Nintendo has delayed this for 10 months from now, because of what? It's lacking, uninspiring, and boring. The pre-Wii U Zelda trailer was still 10x more interesting than this.
And if you've been waiting 5 years for this game, like I have, and find Breath of the Wild to be something worth the hype, please share whatever you're smoking.

Re: Nintendo Life Weekly: New Game in Development for Wii U, Super Mario Maker in Real Life, and More

NodesforNoids

Darksiders 1 was amazing.
One of few titles where playing as a hulking meathead was actually alot of fun.
The intro was better than all of 2, the art was new and inspired, and the ending sequence was fantastic.
I enjoyed it so much so, that when my 360 died, it was one of the first 5 games I purchased for my PS3.
Very much like Zelda x God of War, and a game that made me want 2 or 3 sequels.
It would be great to see them up the resolution to a full 1080p, with better surround support and an increased frame rate. Maybe even some new art for the gallery and a digital comic too?
Not the best game ever made, but it's not often you find a Zelda imitator that does so much, so well.

Re: E3 2016: Nintendo E3 Zelda Badge Appears to Suggest Male and Female Link

NodesforNoids

I'm a slim guy, so playing as Link was never a problem.
Gears of War?
I just don't relate playing as a hulking tower of flesh.
I tend to choose female protagonists, for the simple reason I appreciate any game that bucks common tradition.
Nintendo has always had a very sexist approach to their 'stories', with Mario and Zelda being top offenders and Metroid being an exception. With Other M, Samus lost alot of cred. Giving gamers a choice is awesome, and very welcome in every instance it's available.
Bioware (a Canadian company) has broken ground by placing gender roles at the wayside, and focusing on player choice and consequence.
At this pivotal moment in their 120+ years, Nintendo can make inclusiveness a priority, without simply pandering to the social justice crusaders.
I welcome a new standard for gender equality and opportunity and urge all my fellow gamers to join this pertinent and essential cause.

Re: Talking Point: 3DS Homebrew Development Causes Another Game Takedown as Nintendo Maintains Its Tight Grip

NodesforNoids

Why crack down on homebrew?
Because most people don't give two cents about import games.
Most people don't spend thousands on this hobby.
So homebrew opens up things like 'disc break', 'carbon copy', and 'sky play'.
Simply: one person buys a game, and his friends give him 5$ to copy it to their system. Or (worse), rents the game and his friends get free copies. It happened with the 360, and I can confirm developers lost at least 4000$ to 5000$, just in my hometown of 6000 people.
Apply that to the global industry and you're talking millions lost. It sounds ridiculous, but consider if it was hardware affected and not 'just software'.
People are justifying this by iterating that these hack users bought the system, so let them do what they want. Like spending 200$ to steal 1000$ worth of games is even remotely, humanely ethical.
Some gamers have let their cynicism blind them and it's making their peers look bad.
And if you don't believe me, look at mobile gaming. People emulate and pirate games there 'because my phone was expensive and that gives me a right to make that decision'.

Re: XSEED Games Will Be Publishing the Physical Copies of Shantae: Half-Genie Hero

NodesforNoids

I'm taking it that Shantae didn't sell super well on the X1 before and that Microsoft has a minimum licence when it comes to physical discs. Like maybe 10k in NA (each region has it's own contract). If you had 7k people buy the last Shantae, asking more money for this one would be a tough sell. Especially if you're trying to avoid biting the bullet and potentially eating the cost of a few thousand unsold copies.
It sounds like a question to ask XSEED.
On the game itself, this is a title I've given up waiting for.
The extended campaign, lack of communication, on and off retail debate and overall gameplay footage just drove my anticipation into the ground.
It'll probably still be a great game, but it's coming at the worst time. A year ago would have been perfect. Now it's going to be smothered. Maybe Wii U and Vita owners should be excited, but as a PS4 guy, I don't really care anymore. And the lack of coverage on PS sites tells me I'm not alone.

Re: Review: Contra III: The Alien Wars (New 3DS / SNES)

NodesforNoids

The fact it retains the top down levels that weren't feasible with Contra Advance makes this the best portable Contra, period.
I'd love to see a Contra Sagas, with a totally overhauled rendering of Shattered Soldier, showcasing dozens of levels across all entries.
Along with a brand new Contra (Exodus, The Revenge, and Desolation all fit with the theme), kind of how the next CoD is releasing alongside MW Remastered.
Since revisiting some old PS3 games, I'm 100% convinced the launch title Resistance was the product of more than a few Contra sessions.

Re: Study Suggests Rising Smartphone Ownership Among Kids Is Hitting Nintendo Hard

NodesforNoids

This argument reminds me of my first crush and her pointed argument with the first professor in our first University class.
She, typing away, following studiously his droning lecture.
Me, being laptop free, scribbling furiously to keep up.
After 10, maybe 12 minutes, he paused and a blisteringly hot summer day became struck with the most crippling silence.
Walking to her desk, he placed his hand on the laptop and closed it promptly before returning to his place at the head of the class.
What followed may as well have been coated with epoxy, as it has stuck with me since.
Upon asking the class if he could resume without further disrespect, the young lady stood and cooly remarked: "Certainly. Anyone can buy this 500$ text, but apparently it takes 3 PHDs to read it aloud."
When she walked out, I followed her, and we both started taking Media Services instead.
Long story short, Nintendo makes pens and paper, but the pen only works with that paper and vice versa.
Meanwhile, everyone else is using laptops and Nintendo fanboys are the self involved professor that hated the laptop.
And I'm still leaving with the girl

Re: Study Suggests Rising Smartphone Ownership Among Kids Is Hitting Nintendo Hard

1980s Nintendo benefitted from 1980s gaming crashing.
1990s Sony benefitted from 1980s Nintendo thriving.
2000s gaming exploded from 1990s Sony thriving.
2010s Nintendo is hurt by 2000s gaming thriving.
The point?
Nintendo has produced dozens of wonderful innovations, but fail to show when it comes to actually competing. With someone across the ring, Nintendo's corner empties. Theyy tuck their tails and hide behind another gimmick.
There is no Wii 2.0
The 'next Gameboy' isn't coming.
This isn't pessimism, it's realism.
The bullish Nintendo that made the DS work is gone. And now, the apologetic Nintendo that brushes off the power argument with Gamecube anecdotes is back.
The Gamecube failed because of the media prompting fewer 3rd party interests, the controller, and the expectation of the fan base. Nintendo progresses not to stagnate, but they have come full circle.
They don't have a leadership group open to change and are quickly losing relevance as they struggle to meet the demands of an audience they (frankly) haven't made a serious effort to understand.

Re: Yo-kai Watch Makes Its UK Chart Debut as Star Fox Zero Holds Top 40 Place

NodesforNoids

It is usually the case that Nintendo and its fans speak highly of its first party efforts. That Ratchet and Clank finished 1st 2 weeks in a row speaks volumes of the dollar value that product provides. I fear that for Nintendo, this may be the last of the ' good weeks' in the UK.
And I'm off. I got a beta key for Grand Kingdom, and will be posting my hands-on review elsewhere in the coming days.

Re: Review: Paranautical Activity (Wii U eShop)

Left 4 Dead 2 (still the best Zombie series) had some random generation, nothing tremendously significant, but enough to keep things interesting.
I'm more for story driven FPSs, like Crysis, Far Cry and Red Faction, which would work with RGEs too. When you can blast your way out of any environmental mishap, it makes things that much more exciting.

Re: EB Games Australia Opens Up Nintendo NX Pre-Orders At $999

NodesforNoids

Am I saying that Nintendo is going the full grand route?
Not necessarily.
I am saying that if Nintendo pulled a full 180 and made a console to sway the (considerable) PC crowd, push the plug and play appeal to a younger middle class and woo casual gamers, now would be ideal.
The numbers are there. Mario is Nintendo's Ratchet and Clank. Mario, truly HD. Zelda. Metroid. They haven't really delivered on that promise, so it's time to put up or shut up.
Nintendo is smart enough to go guns blazing, but they need to feel threatened. The PS4 could scarcely be more intimidating. Nearly a million systems a month for 42 months. That's scary. And their release schedule is only deepening.
Holding back means another Wii U. Hesitation means failure. Nintendo has money and precious little else to lose.
They're either going to rebound with the NX or go full Sega. Unlike the 80s, where an entire industry rested on their shoulders, the decisions Nintendo makes this time are going to be completely personal.

Re: EB Games Australia Opens Up Nintendo NX Pre-Orders At $999

NodesforNoids

999$ for the Pro console. 1TB SSD, includes a game and a 3 month subscription to the new online service. Nintendo NXS: a service featuring improved online gaming and hundreds of VC games on demand.
749$ for the Standard console. 1 TB HDD, includes a free 2 week trial to Nintendo NXS.
It splinters gamers, but having 2 SKUs on offer is smart.
I'd pay the premium to have SSD. I'd have done so with the PS4, that's for sure. The included game is just candy so thriftier gamers can justify taking the extra plunge.

Re: Callie and Marie Join a New Splatoon amiibo Range on 8th July

NodesforNoids

@CapeSmash toy vs video game. It's the book vs movie, movie vs book, book vs music, theatre vs comfort of your own home argument.
Pay 65$ for the newest game. Get 65$ worth of gameplay, then shelf / trade / sell / give it.
Whereas some might collect the toy and display it in their house.
We have seen tons of 'game rooms' on various gaming channels, and I don't so much care for someone with a rare game, but for the memorabilia. I can play that game, legally or otherwise, but that item? There's no real substitute for a physical thing that has a real presence to it.
Think about it, unless you pay alot more, all you get with physical games is a case. A disc (that probably cost 2$ to manufacture) and a crappy plastic case.
The 3DS / Vita are a bit better, but not by much.
In example, I like Uncharted alot more than Dark Souls (the camera is still garbage), but I only preordered DS3. Reason? The statue they included.
Most anticipated game, overshadowed by a sizeable 'figure'. When my friend Anthony came over, it was like, "Oh hey, DS3. What. What? What! Oh my god! That statue's sweet!"
Contrast that with the ex's "You are NOT leaving that out." She also wasn't thrilled by the price.
Short point, long story: sometimes, the tangible is preferred to the substantial, just because it's tangible.

Re: Callie and Marie Join a New Splatoon amiibo Range on 8th July

NodesforNoids

It's only a scam if Nintendo lies about what the figure does.
"I could make one for less".
Nope, not true.
Unless you stole one and have no conscious regarding theft.
Or you can somehow build one from scratch and your time isn't valuable.
Don't like, don't buy.
But if you're going to complain, go full Newton and gravitate towards an intelligent, original idea.
Cut, copy and paste comebacks are for PC trolls.
So stop waggling your filthy Nunchuk and get creative.

Re: Nintendo Financial Results Deliver Profits but Predict Severe Drops in Expected Wii U and 3DS Sales

NodesforNoids

15 million, unrealistic.
10-11 million, possible. It depends on whether NX is backward compatible.
Based off the heat Sony has faced and Microsoft's own switch, the likelihood is high.
800,000 systems, realistic, if Japan keeps support.
550,000 systems, likely, if Japan follows the EU lead.
Expect a price cut, possibly of 100$ USD, as early as September 1st.
(My supply company has the MK8 bundle as being 'Set to release August 19, 2016' with a 'SRP 199.96' in Canada)

Just under 3 weeks until Uncharted 4!

Re: Poll: NX and Mobile Make This a Defining Year for Nintendo - Are You Optimistic?

NodesforNoids

@Solid_Stannis
Own the 1st party market?
Including 3rd party exclusives, I'd sacrifice Bayonetta 2, Mario 3D and Smash for Bloodborne, Ratchet & Clank, and Uncharted 4.
Particularly when the supporting cast includes No Man's Sky, Horizon, I Am Setsuna, and Tales of the Sea. All the more when you add every multiplatform title that would never touch Nintendo, and every developer who has ever compromised their vision to fit Nintendo's box.
Aside from Skylanders, Nintendo pushes nothing but first person, so it's pretty hard to see through the rose tinted bias, but Nintendo has missed more often than hit this generation.
For every Smash, there's been a Devil's Third. For every Fire Emblem, there's been a Chibi Robo. Forgive me for not having the time to wait for Nintendo to deliver enough to make another console worthwhile.
Question: How long until the 'NX' is even worth investing in?
Wii U took 13 months, if not 19. If the NX hits, 2 months is all they'll get. And that's if VR doesn't take off.
If VR does exceed the overly low mark, NX needs to be must have Day 1. And Nintendo's pride is precisely why it won't.

Re: Nintendo Download: 21st April (North America)

NodesforNoids

Star Fox Zero and Wonderful 101 do push gaming, but there is little reward for the investment. There is innovation for the sake of true progression and innovation just to be different. Nintendo wants to be different, they just don't always do it well.
And they've become very stubborn. The DS succeeded, so they followed that with 8 follow-ups in less than 8 years. It's overwhelming for the average consumer.
The Wii U flopped, so Nintendo eliminated the 8GB option.
Instead of improving on their failure, Nintendo turned their back.
Funny then, that Nintendo is surprised consumers have done the same.

Re: Nintendo Download: 21st April (North America)

NodesforNoids

For Nintendo, the issue with Star Fox Zero is the same issue Nintendo has had for 23 years. The complete and utter failure to listen to their fanbase, or anyone outside of their own front office. They respond poorly to criticism and they have come to a point that many (rightly) believe they will never recover.

Re: Nintendo Download: 21st April (North America)

NodesforNoids

@Aloth 3 different developers, each working on a different storyline. The team that made Black Ops 3 hadn't developed anything since BO2 (the year Wii U launched).
I get it, you're not creative enough to hate anything besides CoD. But pairing a sports game with 1 team and annual releases with CoD (Activision has seperate devs working on mobile on top of the big 3) really invalidates the majority of your comment.
Even EA has multiple studios working under their umbrella, with seperate studios in charge of Madden and NHL, in addition to DICE and Bioware.
I'm sure you knew all about this before you commented and chose to do so regardless.

Re: Yo-Kai and Dragon Quest Still Lead for 3DS in Japan Following Modest Disney Art Academy Launch

NodesforNoids

A quarter of a million copies of DS3 sold in Japan, before International release. I guess we know which game is going to be topping the NPD charts this month.
More so when you consider that DS3 is essentially only selling on the PS4 in Japan and will have 2 considerable install bases to draw sales from.
I've never understood the appeal of a Pokémon / YW type game, but I guess the Japanese love those sorts of experiences. I'd prefer they died off this year, but that's just my own personal opinion.

Re: Twilight Princess HD and Pokkén Tournament Perform Well in US NPD Charts

NodesforNoids

A better result for Pokken than SFV? Not surprising.
Wii U sells for JUST 1st party content.
Argue Namco's position (a major partner in bringing Smash 4 to the competitive scene), but Pokémon has never featured on any other console, handheld or otherwise, than Nintendo.
SFV is a niche game, being sold on a system with 10x the options the Wii U presents.
I'd venture that SFV sold more PS4s than Pokken sold Wii Us.
And I'd echo these exact sentiments when concerning Twilight Princess HD.
The NX is coming, maybe this year maybe not. But Nintendo has less than 6 months to sell it to consumers.
They're playing with fire, and Star Fox failing to crack the NPD listing for April will reflect that.
Take the 8 non-Nintendo titles in this list, add-in Ratchet and Clank (a game that the vocal minority doesn't acknowledge, but the cost-conscious and brand favoring majority is going to buy) and DS3, and Nintendo will find themselves in yet another 'low month'.
Consumers demand options.
I've seen it, pretty exclusively over the last 5 months.
Our receivers have noted that Nintendo stock arrives at 15 to 20% the rate of X1, 12 to 16% the rate of PS4.
You probably won't see first party games sell in the tens of millions on those systems though, so Nintendo will continue to make money as long as their games are selling.
Sony and MS are trumping Nintendo there, what with the 'console surcharge' still in effect.
I don't think Nintendo sells enough 3rd party software to consider it's long term effect, and maybe they don't consider the impact that's taken on their bottomline, but Sony and MS push 3rd party bundles and they listen to their demographics.
It might sound like semantics on the outside looking in, but Nintendo needs to do something before E3 to retain consumer trust and interest.
The recent reveal and release of My Nintendo seems to have fallen flat and no information has been shared on the mobile front outside of positive Miitomo download numbers.
Zelda is slowly fading from relevance, and I'm becoming concerned that Nintendo may have devalued the franchise to the point that it fails to draw interest in it's next home console entry.
From my viewpoint, one that has shifted closer to the frontlines of the retail war, Nintendo has lost their pivot as a leader in cutting edge technology and fun, rewarding experiences.
The shelf life on many of these mainstays (whether new additions to existing series' or new IP) has expired.
To be frank, the online infrastructures are infantile in direct comparison to their contemporaries and none of this bodes well for Nintendo as we head further into the 2017 financial season.
I'm sorry for the overt negativity shown, but Nintendo doesn't have many reasons to extend either the Wii U or 3DS lifespans and these last 6 months are stark evidence to that claim.
If not for their substantial floating assets, I'd push for an acquisition by a Samsung or even a merger with an LG. As it stands, Nintendo is in for a very humble 2nd and 3rd Quarter.

Re: World Video Game Hall of Fame 2016 Nominees Announced

NodesforNoids

Why FF over DQ? Ask yourself this: DOOM or Wolfenstein?
DQ was first, but to say DQ (which had it's name changed in Western regions) was of greater influence and impact is reaching.
It's like arguing for Street Fighter, because Street Fighter 2 came 2nd. That's ridiculous.
The argument for Minecraft is simple: no language barriers, no creativity restrictions, gameplay entirely based on user input.
Tomb Raider, for properly introducing 3rd person, 3D gameplay.
Civilization, for revolutionizing world builders (and RTS in general).
Madden, for popularizing sports games.
The industry owes, literally billions annually, to these 3 titles.
Zelda, Space Invaders, et al were wonderful precursors, but calling out a predecessor as superior is a cop-out. Pong preceded Zelda and the industry just about didn't survive.
When the industry needed to advance, only select games truly moved gaming forward.
Many of these titles moved gaming along, but few truly changed the business. It may not be obvious now, but these 3 titles' impact will still be felt 20 years from now.

Re: Review: Shantae: Risky's Revenge - Director's Cut (Wii U eShop)

NodesforNoids

Pirate's Curse kind of makes sense on the big screen, but this should have stayed on portables. It looks as generic and 'trendy' as it plays. On a DSi or 3DS, that's relatively excusable, but at full price, on a home console? It's almost as bad as Xeodrifter.
Axiom Verge, Mutant Mudds, Fez, Poncho, Shovel Knight, even Last Survivor are better investments.
If you want to support Wayforward, wait for the next Shantae. Or pick this up when it inevitably sales for 2$.
Then again, if these devs had their way, they'd still have the KS running and you'd never see 1/2 Genie Hero.

Re: Review: F-Zero (New 3DS / SNES)

NodesforNoids

The first Top Gear on the SNES was better than F-Zero and SMK combined. The tracks were better, the cars were better and the multiplayer was better. Nintendo's 1st party racers took another generation to become playable or fun. 2 player, local only MK? Pass. The original F-Zero is a pale shadow of 64, and is insulting to mention it alongside GX.

Re: 7th Dragon III Code: VFD Arrives in North America on 12th July

NodesforNoids

I never played either of the PSP games, but the first was pretty fun. Things sure have changed from the DS version.
As an aside, I partly fault Nintendo Life for the confusion surrounding the title.
The series is 7th Dragon (simple enough), with the last 2 games being of the 7th Dragon 2020 spin-off variety.
This game is, therefore, 7th Dragon 3 (or III).
Writing it out as 7th Dragon III Code: VFD actually makes the title a lot more complicated than Sega's, which is either 7th Dragon III, Code: VFD or 7th Dragon III - Code: VFD. It depends on which press release / ad you look at, but not separating the III and Code only adds to the headache of this release.
I like the 7th Dragon III: Code VFD I've seen elsewhere (only in that it reminds me of how Enix labelled DQ. e.g. Dragon Quest IX: Sentinel of the Starry Skies).

Re: Nikkei Report Suggests That Wii U Production Will End in 2016

NodesforNoids

I think @RCMADIAX is spot on.
Nintendo will step up manufacturing to meet demands, and it'll fade away.
Ending things abruptly does nothing for consumer confidence.
Question though, when the machines are assembled, a bunch of stuff is different, right?
Ok, so if the PAL region system is different than the NTSC one, could this potentially be hinting at one line closing? If they stopped, say, the one that makes European units, they could probably convert that line to supporting the Asian market instead.
In the city I shopped on Black Friday, X1 and PS4 were both outselling Wii U (games and systems) at least 3 to 1. The guy working said their PS4 stock was all out on the floor and they still had a bunch of Wii Us in the back.
Japan seems better off having more units, a problem Nintendo makes by region locking their hardware and dividing their interests instead of focusing on the actual issue at hand.
It's all so micromanaged and it's opened the door for user friendly platforms like Steam to better compete.

Re: Nintendo Download: 24th March (Europe)

NodesforNoids

Pretty great week for New 3DS.
Original 3DS gets crapped on and Infinity Runner isn't that great, but DKC 1&2, a retail game and a couple decent sales more than makes this the best week for the system this year.
Hometown Story, Hakuoki, Virtue, Bit Trip and Jett are all fun games, but give me some Dixie Kong anyday. She's a pretty likeable character and really helped speed up the platforming segments.
Those bee hive stages are RIDICULOUS. My challenge is to make it through that one particular level without dying or swearing. I swear ( ) it's impossible.

Re: The Game Boy Advance is Now 15 Years Old

NodesforNoids

It's weird, unless you were like me and jumped on the Sega train before Nintendo.
The Game Gear was bad enough, but the Nomad paid for it's stupidly expensive battery pack in a month.
True story: I got a set of Panasonic batteries that lasted all of 34 minutes. This was, oh, about a month before I found a battery pack.
Coincidentally, also about a month before I got my first of 3 Dreamcasts.

Re: The Game Boy Advance is Now 15 Years Old

NodesforNoids

Metroid Fusion, A Link to the Past (recreating the opening scene on a handheld was talked about in every gaming magazine when it came out), that funky Dragonball Z RPG series, Mario and Luigi, Minish Cap, Contra, and Super Mario World (Advance 2, I think) were my biggest time sinks. Between just those ones listed, I know I dropped at least 150 hours. Mainly because I played through M&L 3 times.
