The long-awaiting 90's Arcade Racer has been given a new name - '90s Super GP - but it appears that the title is no longer coming to the Wii U.
The product page on the Nicalis site lists the formats as Xbox One and PS4 only, along with a release date of Fall 2016 - that's three years after the original release window of late 2013.
The game's Kickstarter campaign ended at the start of 2013, and a Wii U release was confirmed when developer Antonis Pelekanos - also known as Pelikan13 - partnered with Nicalis. In an interview with Nintendo Life, Pelekanos claimed that the Nintendo version would launch alongside the other editions of the game in "late 2013", but that never happened.

A 2014 launch was then mooted but also missed, and fresh footage - showing the gorgeous visuals and smooth frame rate on Wii U - was released in 2015 to prove the project was still very much alive.
We've contacted both Nicalis and Pelekanos to get clarification on the news and will update this article when we hear back.

This is very disappointing. It was a game I'd been keeping an eye on for a long time and tried to generate some interest in. If I was a backer for the Wii U version I'd be doubly pissed off. Updates have been few and far between but of what has been seen it looked really good. What makes it worse is 2D platformers and sidescrollers are a dime a dozen but there aren't many quality racers on Wii U bar MK8, Fast Racing NEO and NFS: Most Wanted.
And you know the few remaining developers are probably thinking to themselves well if Nintendo can't be bothered to support the Wii U, what are we doing here?
Well $#!&!
That's a shame, it was one of the games I was looking forward to playing the most.
Even that old video looks better than some eShop games... why not just release it? Doesn't make sense!
Disappointed, but not surprised.
if anyone supported the kickstarter for a wii u version..report it...u cant do that on kickstarter...if u say u goina do it u have too..
Nooooooooo!!!!!!!
Nooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!
Crying......Wii u screwed again!!!
At least the game still coming and I want it so bad I'll probably get both the Xbox and ps4 versions!! Very sad news no Wii u version!!
Wow, that's a major disappointment, I really wanted this game.
Bummer! Admittedly surprised this isn't coming to PC even... What a shame.
Another broken promise. Not surprising when the perception is that even Nintendo themselves are giving up supporting the Wii U. By the Fall, surely details of NX will be out, making the Wii U even less relevant.
Another Nail in the coffin of Wii U, it's a shame.
Reminds me of the latest Sonic Racing game... but with less stuff to it? Well, if it's neither on Wii U, nor on PC, they are asking for failure. 3 years late on schedule and way too picky on their platform selection.
Meh, game looks boring anyways.
Well to bad..
dropping the Wii U version is pretty shocking seeing as it had an eShop branded trailer. You'd think it'd do rather well on eShop with barely anything launching this year on Wii U. The PC version being dropped raises eyebrows and further questions.
Now wouldn't be surprised if this ends up on NX and the PC removal was an error
I hope this is just a mistake...
Maybe with the release date, we'll see it on the NX eventually. Other than that, it's not surprising that it won't be making it's way onto the Wii U...since nintendo isn't really going to back it up anymore, I can see more and more developers forgetting it too, but that could mean a good thing for the next console (hopefully seeing a huge release schedule for the NX's E-Shop) and could also mean we'll see a lot more games come out for the 3DS' E-Shop too...at least we can hope...I could see and want some more racing titles on the 3DS!
So sorry for WiiU backers.
This Console is long way gone, abandoned by everyone, Nintendo included...
It will take soooo long before I will trust again Nintendo and NX, after being a WiiU owner and not having touched the console for almost a year.
It's a shame indded. I was really looking foward to playing it. But no surprises here. Since the NX was announced the Wii U as lost any momentum it still had.
But dropping the PC version??? That was clearly a shocker to me.
Don't tell me this is going to skip Wii U too! God, the Wii U is such a disappointment.
The game looks frikin' cool though.
Also, as far as JonTron reactions go--
That's not too surprising that it dropped the Wii U support, and if I had to guess the lack of PC support was likely due to the age old "PC games get pirated so screw that" saying developers seem to have taken on lately.
I would like to think that they have shifted plans to launch it on the NX, but even that I don't think is likely as there is no way the developer would have a dev kit yet, and with the NX being a March release, it may not be worth bothering about.
I will be very sad if this one turns out to be true, it has been one of the games I have been most looking forward to play on Wii U. =(
Probably wasn't going to come to Australia anyway
@abe_hikura we saw trailers for aliens from sega / metro and many other games .... We saw none of them and we saw the trailer way before the wiiU comes out it self ... And all got cancelled ... Games for wiiU got canceled since 2012 ... I didn't even believe that watch dogs survived and came out even after a very long long delayed for Wii U version ... It's a bad bad console with bad spec with a good concept ... But Nintendo failed it ! ... I hope they learn this lesson and make it up for us with NX
Anyway it looks horrible for me and no fun ... I don't care
Now I'm glad I didn't fund this. I was excited about this for a couple of years now though. I hate to fuss about what seems to be a smaller Indie developer but this seems kind of ridiculous. The Wii U needs more good stuff coming this year as it is. Looks like I have no way to play this now. The wait for this was getting crazy anyway.
I think I can sum up this news in just one word: Nicalis.
I'd be asking for my money back if possible if I had supported a Wii U version. The only thing I have backed thankfully is Yooka Layler, but I trust the developers for that.
"and a Wii U release was confirmed when developer Antonis Pelekanos - also known as Pelikan13 - partnered with Nicalis."
That seems off. As far as I remember Pelikan13 was already planning for a Wii U release, saying he had always loved Nintendo and all that.
Only when he partnered with Nicalis, the first delays in development started taking place, putting the game in publishing limbo and back then it took quite a while before we heard from it again. Too bad, because this tribute to the likes of Daytona, Virtua Racing, Rad Racer, Sega Rally and Ridge Racer would have interested a lot of older gamers that have fond memories of such games.
This game is NOT to be confused with the likes of Sonic Racing and it is not boring either; it looks exactly as it should because it is mimicking those older racers, and it captures that atmosphere quite nicely.
But anyways, I'd blame Nicalis for the removal of Wii U from the target platforms. Maybe it'll still come to the NX, adding yet another title to the "ever growing portfolio" of the Wii U's successor...
P.S.
The new name sucks balls...
"That's three years after the original release window of late 2013."
I think that's called - "pulling a Zelda".
I guess that's why E3 is only about Zelda U, just to show fans it is still coming to Wii U, before unveiling the NX version that is releasing at the same time.
If I'm a 3rd party dev and I come to Nintendo and ask them to show my WiiU game at E3 to give it some exposure, and Nintendo tells me - "Sorry, no can do, we're only having Zelda U at E3 this year." - well I'm dropping support too. And then I ask if I can show the NX version - "Sorry, no NX at E3 this year either." - well maybe I drop developing on that console too.
Nintendo can't expect everyone to carry them, they are supposed to be carrying everyone else. If they won't do it, Sony and MS will.
I think this game was delayed because when Nicalis stepped in it catched some bad bug. Something like, the bad videogame AIDS or something.
@spizzamarozzi Good one. To make it relevant to the business, we do have to come up with another meaning for that abbreviation, though: Arrested In Development Syndrome or something like that...
Nicalis does it again...
Well, that sucks. I wonder why-oooooooooohhh, Nicalis. Now I get it...
@Sakura nailed it
@MadAussieBloke shots fired....
Let's wait to here an official announcement , it maybe that that the Wii u version just got missed out for some reason.
At least I'll be able to buy it on xbone
Would be a shame for it to skip Wii U. Game looked to be a buy for me but nothing has been confirmed yet so wait and see I guess. Of course it's 3 years past original date so at this point who knows whats going on
Oh how surprising. A game jumping the Wii U ship? That has never been seen before!
Would have brought it if it was released but I'm not surprised really.
Lame. Wii U owners getting the shaft once again.
That sucks, the game looks pretty cool. Guess I'll be picking this up on one of the other consoles then.
@ThanosReXXX
https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2013/02/the_90s_arcade_racer_confirmed_for_wii_u_eshop
"Working with Nicalis, we can release on more platforms, including Wii U. Nicalis will also support with Unity programming, physics, tuning and general design and production of the game."
Wii U was on the cards but it was only when he partnered with Nicalis that he stated 100% that it was coming to Wii U.
That Yookah game will not see a Wii U release.
@shaneoh : All games should come to Australia now that the IARC scheme is in effect. Publishers no longer need to pay to get their download-only games classified (all they need to do now is fill out a survey detailing the content of the game and it spits out automated age ratings for all of the major international markets). Nintendo themselves have been using it for eShop/VC releases. This has been in effect for over a year now, if I'm not mistaken.
Hard copy games must still undergo the traditional human-reviewed process.
Yet more evidence to reinforce my opinion on kickstarters. Eg. NEVER BACK ONE.
@MadAussieBloke hahahaha, love it. You still digital4life or you cracked and buried yourself in boxes? Hey maybe that's where you were all that time......
I wanted this game! I am also an XBOX ONE owner, and I will NOT be purchasing it on the XBOX ONE.
Good thing I have PS4.
@Damo Aha, well that must have been it then. I vaguely remember him already mentioning Wii U or more specifically Nintendo as a target before Nicalis was in the picture, but it was probably more of a wishful thinking kind of thing from his perspective then, and initially, Nicalis seemed to be helping him to realize that goal, and we've seen multiple supposed Wii U trailers, so it's a sad thing (even though it's somewhat understandable considering the current state of affairs) that yet another game is disappearing from the Wii U.
But like I said in the previous comment: maybe it'll be passed on to the NX, maybe even in a 'Director's Cut' edition...
And another one bites the dust.
My god Nintendo has dropped the ball I am out for the next gen, at least. They could have and SHOULD have secured this game to come to their console. Pathetic and disappointing -this is one of the very few games I would have bought to play on my mostly useless Wii U. I don't care that this is an Indie, this is Nintendo's lack of attention and ignorance in a very long pattern of failing to have planned games actually get released to play on their system.
Could come to nx?
Terrible news, both concerning the likely betrayal of Wii U backers and that they missed the opportunity to take out the awkward and unnecessary (and misspelled) word "90's" out of the title in their name change. So much for this.
I received my money back from Antonis so I give points for his honesty in the end. I knew this project was going to be full of problems from the moment Tyrone Rodriguez and Nicalis entered as the publisher.
I backed the game as a PC and Wii U game on Kickstarter all those years ago. It was also supposed to come out on Linux, Mac, iOS and Android.
The thing that is weird is that last update on Kickstarter was in November 2015, Antonis wrote then that the development is ready and only bug fixing is left and optimizing. He also wrote that he has time for other projects now that the development is finishing and he even released a Street of Rage style game in Steam for PC on Early Access.
What happened then in the past seven months that lead to cancelling of all the versions promised originally in the Kickstarter? I hope Nlife will get the truth out.
Lame. I wont get it anymore, it's pointless to buy something like this on another system imo, it's suited for Nintendo. I knew once they got quiet about it, it was done for. There's nothing special about this anyway, it just looked like a pretty time waster. How bad can they be that they can't make a racer work?
Glad I didn't support this. But I might pick it up for the ps4 and if by some chance if it does come to the NX I'll double dip.
That's if I even like it on the ps4
Good thing I own the other 2 consoles. I would be livid if I only had my WiiU. For those that only have the WiiU... that sucks, sorry.
@SLIGEACH_EIRE I agree, as a Daytona fan I have been looking forward to this since its announcement.
@msvt This is not Nintendo's fault, they cancelled the PC and mobile versions as well. Incompetence.
Well why do people expect developers to still support the Wii U when Nintendo isn't bothering with it even. I wouldnt be surprised if Bloodstained for the Wii U is dropped here soon.
I am always shying away from developers that say that there may be a Wii U version on the horizon. At least we will get Yooka-Laylee and Mighty No. 9.
@MadAussieBloke you got any recommendations for me since I got a PS3 for Xmas and have allot of games to catch up on before the nx tempts me back to the Nintendo rollercoaster! I'm playing (and loving) the last of us right now and have got through all the aliens games and farcry 4 but I'm not sure what buy next?
What a shame. There is such a huge void in Wii U for racing games. This would've been a great addition to the genre.
For some reason, the "official" website's down now. Also, the homepage is some kind of pig latin paragraph.
I was a kid when I played Daytona USA arcade in the 90s. I'm still very interested in the game so I'll pick up the Xbox One or PS4 version. I wonder if Yooka Laylee (Playtonic) won't be released for Wii U either. Even Nintendo itself has shifted their games to NX with only poor spin-offs like Amiibo Festival to feed Wii U.
Has anyone reached out to Nicalis?
Especially since the angelcomm.net pages are GONE!
As a strong supporter of Wii U since launch with over 90 games for the console, let me just say that I'm so glad I purchased an Xbox One last March.
Disappointed but not surprised considering the lack of news. At least we got fast racing neo. It's a mistake imo as a quality game on the eshop should do well as there is not much else coming out.
Glad I didn't support this too
When I had a WiiU (2 years ago?), this was definitely on my radar. As a decent looking game on Wii U, it kind of has to be or what else would be on the radar? As it stands now I just feel bad for those who only have a Wii U.
I was really looking forward to this game and Wii U is the only system I own. After this, I will never support Nicalis or that Tyrone dude. He is one of the biggest douchebags in the industry.
@PleaseUnderstan They literally just did an interview where they said it was coming for sure since it was promised, no if's and's or but's. They also hinted at a possible NX port. Yooka Laylee is being done by absolute pros who know the value of their word and understand that their brand has a strong link to Nintendo.
Those tracks look very similar to mk8
Oh noooooo!!! I only Kickstarted games that were coming to WiiU since buying a WiiU and discovering Kickstarter...and so far, really only Adventures of Pip and Deer God has actually come out. :-
@Sir420 Xbox One is probably the best console this generation. Best online, best controller, best deals and free backwards compatibility. Rare Replay is arguably the best game compilation ever and it was the main reason I got the console, but there's much more: Master Chief Collection (Halo 1, 2, 3, 3 ODST and 4 bundle), best Killer Instinct game one could dream of (and free to start), plus the multiplatform games.
@arnoldlayne83
You could say how disappointed you are with Nintendo due to Wii U. But I'd like to say how happy I am with them. Not to say Wii U wasn't disappointing in many ways- it was. BUT. Nintendo supported it a generation despite it being a lost cause long ago.
Unlike how Sony bent me over and shafted me and everyone else who bought a Vita (oh, that's a lovely handheld we sold you last year... sorry, gotta run!) Nintendo actually supported their console, even when no one else would. Even when they knew it was a failure. Even when they knew it was losing them money. They showed me that if I buy a Nintendo console, they WILL support it. They WONT abandon it.
It may have sparse releases but it's better than no releases. Last year there were games to play, whether you chose to play them or not.
*************************************
How on earth does YET ANOTHER Kickstarter game that was FUNDED FOR WII U then come to every system EXCEPT WII U?!!!
This is a scam. First Project Cars, then Hyper Light Drifter... This dev takes us for fools. He thinks we're an easy mark. Lie, take your money and then screw you over. How do you like being lied to and screwed over people? If you're smart you'll raise hell about this. Wii U was a funded version. It doesn't matter if it's a dying console or not. It was funded for Wii U. Paid for to release on Wii U.
@VanillaLake
I liked PS4 far more than X1, until Spencer came in and changed the score. Now I love X1. Only console with HBOnow where I can watch Game of Thrones. BC is awesome too. Even if Tales of Vesperia, Lost Odyssey and Portal 2 aren't available yet. But, I still like PS4 a lot too. Lots of good exclusives. And Wii U has had some of my favorite games this gen.
But my favorite of the generation is the 3DS. Love the 3D, love the games, it's a wonderful little handheld.
@JaxonH "Nintendo supported it a generation despite it being a lost cause long ago". This is not really true, Nintendo has long abandoned the Wii U with only a few games for some time now, which is worrying since the console is only 3 years old, and some of those games are spin-off games (Amiibo Festival) or mixed received games (Star Fox Zero). It's not true that Nintendo supported the Wii U a generation, and the generation has not ended either. That you are enjoying the console and you are happy, that's out of the question.
@Tasuki I don't get why they would dropped support for the Wii U if all it'll going to be is another digital game on the eShop. If somehow the Wii U eShop is link to the NX like the Wii Shop was to the Wii U then releasing for Wii U eShop makes much more sense because not only will the game be available for Wii U owners to play but NX owners who bought the new system could also play it as well.
@JaxonH I agree with you about Microsoft, Xbox One started so bad with Kinect included in every bundle, a high launch price and the always online premise. People said "no" and Microsoft reacted, but a little too late, because most people had already bought the PS4.
Xbox One now is great value and has really good deals, I just bought it recently, but when it was released, I did not even consider the possibility.
The PS4 is good, too, with some great exclusive games, but I don't like some Sony decisions and the poor retro library with only 14 PS2 games.
About 3DS, I really love the games library, I have lots of old and new games on it, from the Ambassador's games, to exclusive games like Awakening, Luigi's Mansion 2, etc., plus remakes (Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, Star Fox 64 3D). My only complain is the poor resolution.
@VanillaLake
When NX releases it will have been in the market nearly 4 1/2 years. That's a pretty close to a normal Nintendo generation. Yes, the last year is particularly sparse. But so was the Wii's last year. And the Wii also had games with a mixed reception too. That's not unique to Wii U.
They supported it slightly less than Wii, and cut the lifespan short half a year, but considering the sales... close enough. Had they pulled a Vita, Smash Bros would have been their last game of the generation.
@VanillaLake
I also wish it had better resolution. And a proper Metroid game, a proper 2nd analog, and GBA virtual console. That would have made it my dream handheld. But, I suppose every platform has its shortcomings. 3 Monster Hunter games and 4 (technically) Fire Emblem games is enough to make my personal hall of fame though.
At least they finally brought SNES. But they need to release the rest of the top rated ones. Still need DKC 3 and a few others...
@sillygostly
I'm aware, but it hasn't encouraged Nicalis to bring Binding of Isaac Rebirth over.
@retro_player_22 It could but then again we don't know. And companies can't take that gamble. If they spend the money to develop on a system that even the company that made it is not supporting game wise they probably won't see a good return financially and for a company that's not good.
This still exists? too late anyway
its so nice to bet on kickstarter, isn't it?
Big disappointment. Let's see if it comes at all. 3 Years is a long development time for this type of game.
I might buy this game on the PS4, depending on reviews. Another great reminder not to support games on Kickstarter. Too many ambitions dying in the face of reality.
Project Cars did it too, but that one could have been better. This one looked better, but I'm still not getting it. I'll wait for GT Sport. I wonder if Shantae and MN9 are still releasing this year.
Honestly, I'd be surprised if they weren't delayed again.
@Endisend
Yes I understand.
I guess my complaints could be more broad about Nintendo's game system with less and less to play, almost daily having games drop off or the infinite delay (kicking it down the road then canceled). Nintendo counts on Indies filling the release schedule ..... well, either make something decent to play or secure games for your game system. I hope the failure of Wii U (which to me started the year or so of the Wii) on Nintendo's part is felt for a long time. They want us all to buy in to another system generation after not providing a comparable (even to themselves) buyer experience? Nah, this game was just one n a long -and growing- list of Wii U's bail 'n fail.
Dropping WiiU support? Automatic Dev blacklist for me. Its one thing to develop for other systems only but if you say you are bringing it to wiiu...bring it to wiiu.
This is pretty disappointing but I have a PS4 so I'll just grab it there. A little embarrassing that it took them 3 years to develop a game folks were shooting out every week in the mid to late 90's and can't even keep promises about delivering it on all promised platforms. Granted we haven't received update as to WHY this decision was made, if it was made at all, so I will reserve judgement for now.
Not a huge surprise. As others have said, if Nintendo can't be bothered supporting Wii U why should anyone else. It looks great though, if it lives up to its potential I'll get it on PS4
@VanillaLake Agreed. I just got a fightstick for One/360/PC. Since I'd invested so much in it, I went ahead and grabbed a 360 as well. So many good fighting games and Sh'mups. Such a great eco system. Good games never go bad, but they do drop in price.
@NodesforNoids Looking at Project Cars, it probably should have become a PC exclusive. Too hard for PS4/One to handle, let alone Wii U.
@Sir420 Yeah, right now Xbox is a great gaming ecosystem and the Elite controller is the best thing I've ever had in my hands.
@MadAussieBloke looked up the games you said and looks like its a hell of a franchise and the games are great and epic but time destroying. I'll leave it till I've got through more back log maybe. Hell, I've still got xenoblade X to get trough yet RPG wise!!
Don't depend on ANY kickstarter games coming to the Wii U unless they raised a crap ton of money AND they have skilled and experienced devs on board. The Wii U is difficult to develop games for, even for large third party developers. What makes people think that every game from a crowdfunding campaign will actually make a Wii U version? This would be a realistic expectation if we were talking about the Wii in 2009 or something, but the Wii U is different. It has a pinhole market and is more difficult to develop for than its competitors. Honestly, for crowdfunded games, going Xbox One/PS4 only is almost a no brainer unless you know there will be a ton of support and marketing if you make a Wii U version.
wasn't all that footage created playing the game on a WiiU? How does one cancel a game being made on a system they're testing it on? They figure no one will buy it vs putting it out for PS4/Xbox?
Looks like Nicalis has taken down the product page that was linked.
I wonder if they've felt the backlash from us Nintendo fans.
