Re: Nintendo Download: 7th August (Europe)

NodesforNoids

Hey, NL
The Unepic / Abyss discounts are actually contingent on ownerships. As in, if you own one, you can get the discount for the other.
The discount will NOT be available for all gamers.
The guys at Nintendo Everything confirmed this already.

Re: Nintendo Download: 7th August (Europe)

NodesforNoids

Abyss for practically nothing? It's a short, cheap game that's as free as Nintendo gaming gets. At 75% off, it's a steal.
I'm still hoping for a decent sale in NA on either Knytt Underground or Unepic.
Both were fun playing (pretentious, frustrating, middling, and obnoxious too) I just don't have the spare cash to commit to owning them.
Aside from Hyrule Warriors and Bayonetta, my year's calendar is open, so those two games could fill the void.

Re: Have Some Gorgeous New Super Smash Bros. Screens, Because Why Not?

NodesforNoids

I'm more a Bayonetta / Hyrule Warriors fan myself.
Haven't really ever enjoyed the competitive nature and the single player mode is really one dimensional.
I can appreciate the game if it sells systems, but it's really just an excuse to roll out some fan service on Nintendo's part.
The two titles I mentioned might be a little over the top, or a little heavy handed, but I've enjoyed them in the past.
Smash is just Nintendo doing the SOS. New gen, new Smash. It's HD... and that's it.
If this is the future, I hope the company folds. Be better off peddling Mario and DK on PS4, iPhone's and XBOX than recycling ideas constantly.
At least Zelda is a decent spin on Dynasty Warriors and Bayonetta is just 2 and not 4 or 5.
I feel too realistic and jaded to like Nintendo for their 'freshly dragged through the mud' games and constant financial drama. Maybe gaming in general is just a tired concept. Framerate and resolution is so important now, maybe I'll join an AMD fan page, so I can talk directly with people about what gaming's 'all about now'.
Or I could just never spend another dime on this hobby and go live outside of western society's privilege over posterity.

Re: Review: Wooden Sen'SeY (Wii U eShop)

NodesforNoids

For reference, I played the first two levels with motion and the Gamepad. The boost jump is MUCH easier with motion, executed by swiping the 'pad itself downwards.
It's actually a pretty natural feeling movement, not something I can the same about the corresponding button combination.
I can't imagine patching D-pad support would be impossible (the Wiimote allows it already), something that would really help the game.
Let's be honest though, the EXACT same issues are present here as with Sonic: TLW and that got a higher score so it could sell more copies.
Seriously, every single issue with that game came down to control.
Sega, like Upper Byte / Neko doesn't know how their character SHOULD move. One, like Spiderman (I guess), another, more like Mario (apparently), but these aren't judgements placed upon them in comparison to current platformers.
Those are judgments placed upon them, through weighty nostalgia.
Both could be much better and both are deserving of lowered scores.
But Nintendolife's scoring has become more and more skewed towards key retail titles these last 12 months. I'm thinking self-preservation may have something to do with it.

Re: Review: Wooden Sen'SeY (Wii U eShop)

NodesforNoids

And yet, still not as frustrating as Puddle.
I found it much more enjoyable than Scram Kitty.
Very similar to Castlevania IV's whip swinging (where the whip would sometimes pull in inexplicably after certain sections).

Re: Collectorvision Announces Justice Beaver for Wii U eShop and Super Nintendo

NodesforNoids

For those that don't have the really old systems and want to save space, I actually have a RetroN system and it's great. Consoles take up tons of space, so having your set-up in a single location is great.
It may be expensive, but if you're collecting all the systems from scratch (especially the GBA, whose SP still commands a decent price) it'll put you in a similar ballpark.
It's virtually painless and works much better with modern TVs.

Re: Video: The 10 Best Zelda Games As Selected By You

NodesforNoids

It's not Zelda, but I had an idea for Shining Force (the one Sega game that made me put down ALttP, back in the day).
Sega and Atlus, sitting in a tree. One makes Sonic, the other.. SHINING FORCE 3. Come on Segatlus! Let's port the FULL SF3 on the 3DS.
Or just a new SF, developed by Atlus.
It could be great.

Re: Nintendo Download: 31st July (North America)

NodesforNoids

For reference, as was with the Letter, Frederic's journey to Canada seems to have been delayed.
Whether the game makes it North or not is beside the point: the fact there is any divide between Nintendo of America and Nintendo Canada is infuriating.
Thankfully, it's only been indie titles thus far.

Re: Review: The Letter (Wii U eShop)

NodesforNoids

I had an idea for a game.. Just like this, but obviously different.
In fact, a college friend has been working on DOOM, QUAKE and UT mods for YEARS. Recently, after producing a small engine similar to UT, but with different texture distribution, he asked if I wanted to make the idea reality.
I would, someday, but probably not soon.
Regardless, this was my idea.
The Forsaken

  • takes place entirely in an abandoned hotel
  • 300 unique rooms
  • 1200+ interactive items
  • puzzle based gameplay
  • ambient noise, little music (except from sources in the game world. eg: radio, TV, record player)
  • One puzzle goes as follows:
You awaken in a room and you're locked inside. You try to kick it open with no success. Using a chair against the door produces a similar result.
You examine your surroundings. The bed is a mess and a scrap of paper on the end table draws your attention. The lamp doesn't work.
The scrap is covered with gibberish. It looks like numbers.
You can move the bedding about.
You discover a locked box under the pillowcase.
Looking around the room, you spy a painting on the wall and an oddly shaped lemon on the ground. The lemon is actually a candle.
Searching the bedside table reveals a book of matches.
Melting the lemon produces a key from within the candle.
    The key opens the box.
A note with the phrase 'just one more' written hastily is inside the box.
The old 'safe behind a portrait' apples here. The safe opens with the combination. Another, larger key is inside. Combining the keys fits the lock, ensuring your escape.
But escape isn't going to be any easier. New puzzles must be solved as you advance in your journey.
Someone wants you here and they want to have fun.
  • Early on, it becomes obvious an audience is watching
  • Reasons behind your panic to escape are clear early on
  • Even without antagonists or combat, there is still a great level or terror and suspense
Should everything work for me to ever make this game, I'd expect it no earlier than summer 2017. It's a pipedream, at best, but an idea I've had percolating for 6-8 years now.

Re: QOL Trademark Filings Point to Quality of Life Branding Worldwide

NodesforNoids

It's funny, AdmiralThrawn, that someone with a self appointed title of 'Admiral' wouldn't think before he spoke.
How is a game, an exaggerated demo at that, to blame for nearly 2 years of Wii U failures.
I hope you like eating crow, as it seems to be what you're asking for.
Poor marketing, lacklustre 3rd party support, indie delays and a shallow release schedule are MUCH bigger problems for Nintendo right now.
And for the record, everyone thought Pikmin 3 was going to 'help turn things around' and it basically flopped.
Which was the last Miyamoto game. The bar seems pretty low as far as expectations are concerned.
Oh and then there's the dozen first party titles, two HUGE second party titles and.. uh.. OH YEAH. ZELDA.

Re: SteamWorld Dig May Have a Discount on Wii U For Those With the 3DS Version

NodesforNoids

Aside from those titles, Fatal Frame is a rather intriguing possibility (though limited in audience due to the expenses that would come from hiring a vocal team, something I argue will narrow it's scope in non-English speaking locations due to necessary subtitles) Mario Maker and Art Academy look to inspire creativity and just who knows what 3rd parties will join the party if Wii U sales were to take off.
Watch_Dogs is a sure thing and Ubisoft has teased another, but what would, say, EA's response be to the still struggling system selling another 4-6 million systems this calendar year?

Re: SteamWorld Dig May Have a Discount on Wii U For Those With the 3DS Version

NodesforNoids

sinalefa, I think you just hit the nail on the head. Will Nintendo adapt cross-buy at the end of the DDP? Who knows at this point. What we do know, is this week (and the rest of August) seems packed with indies.
I counted 11 indies with potential July / August release dates still to come.
Tengami, Teslagrad, Pier Solar, Assault Android Cactus, Master Reboot, Wooden Sen'Sey, Super Toy Cars, Midtown Crazy Race and Art of Balance are 9 likely 'summer' releases. Dieselstormers and The Fall seem to be very far along. I'd be surprised if either waited until autumn to debut.
Then we have SSB, Lego Batman 3, Skylanders, DI 2.0, Hyrule Warriors, Bayonetta 1 & 2, Toad's Treasure Tracker and Steamworld Dig.
After E3, I also wouldn't be surprised to see Kirby, Yoshi and Splatoon by May. Not to mention the possibility of Minecraft (not my cup of tea, but it could happen).
With Xenoblade Chronicles X, Mighty No. 9 and Zelda on the horizon, the next 17 months look VERY interesting.

Re: New Fatal Frame Will Be Spooking The Wii U In Japan This September

NodesforNoids

Fatal Frame seems like a movie that would go nicely along the lines of The Ring and The Grudge. Let's not forget that one of Saw's original visionaries was also Japanese.
The movie seems like a no-brainer for American audiences, but the manga? The Wii U game?
No offense to European markets, but the US is the world's biggest market because of the English language. It's streamlined American culture.
European markets? Not even close.
And gamers HATE subtitles. So, triple the localization budget (if not 5-8x larger) just to cater to countries like Belgium and Poland who, if my info is correct, has been the lowest first world market for Nintendo titles for over 20 years now. The sheer audacity of it is banal.
And for the simple reason the majority of gamers would refuse to buy a subtitled game, IF it is localized, Nintendo would likely only pay a small English cast, potentially even hiring internally.
That, people, is the reality of the Wii U's install base.
Shovel Knight isn't out yet? I guess the whole '8-15 languages' they needed to include, the ratings checks, additional bug testing and distribution adds both time AND money, huh?
Fatal Frame MIGHT be localized, in English and subtitled in non-English speaking locales, but it's not happening for a long time, and that's only if both FF and Hyrule Warriors do well.
They haven't talked seriously about localizing Yokai Watch yet. They definitely haven't spoken very seriously about Puzzle and Dragons Z, so why would Nintendo spend (potentially) 2-3 million localizing a game that, to be frank, would fall into a niche and sell terribly.
For a system that has sold 7.3-7.5 million units, MK8's 1.6-1.8 million sales are astronomical. But to localize, they'll need to push a million copies of HW worldwide and 300k-400k copies of this new FF.
I don't want to come across as a hater but as a realist.
-> If this doesn't get released in EU (couldn't care less about US ) then I will attempt a boycott of the Wii U and future first party games and yes sell my Wii U for pittance.
THAT is what we should avoid.
THAT sounds like a fanboy regretting his choice.
Sorry, UltimateDespair, but you fell right into it.
I wouldn't give you or anyone pittance for such an obnoxious attitude, acting like Nintendo should sacrifice it's empire to sate the appetites of those chomping on pipe dreams. It's not in your hands.
But IF Nintendo wants to see if localization is worth it, put up a pre-order. Vote with your wallets, not your mouths and then we'll see what happens.
Half of the people who demand these games never buy them, so why should Nintendo bother listening?
(/devil's advocate rant)
Don't jump on your keyboards and get mad.
Go out and DO something.

Re: Nintendo Goes Download-Only With The 2014 Club Nintendo Elite Rewards

NodesforNoids

@rjejr, I did the same!
The 399 points for G&W are almost too good to pass up. Even if I'd have more enjoyment from NES Remix, G&W's DDP points gave me one code and put me within 200 of another. Guacamelee and (the still discounted) Armillo gave me another. Cashing all 3 gave me enough for NES Remix 2, so I'm all set for the rest of summer!

Re: Master Reboot to Arrive on the Wii U eShop on 24th July

NodesforNoids

I remember reading on a site, and recently (probably Polygon, seeing as their anti-Nintendo editorials are becoming all the more one sided) that Nier is the game Zelda wishes it could be, Chrono Trigger is the most overrated RPG is an overrated genre, Folklore is the greatest game no one played and no indie was worth the time, money or effort. I seem to recall 'inept', 'uninspired' and 'pretentious' being the descriptors. After searching said reviewers' reviews, he (or she, there was no picture) had MK8 ranked a 6.5 out of 10, Shovel Knight a 6 out of 10 and Wind Waker a 6 out of 10.
Now, it might just be me, but calling Pokemon a 'fad' seems like just one more sign of said reviewer's stupidity. 18 years, 25 manga series, over 245 million units in sales, Nippon jets, trains, Time magazine, Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade balloons, 14 soundtracks, 17 films, over 800 episodes, 36 games, guest appearances in dozens of other Nintendo games and dozens of Guinness Records.
Point is, sometimes I trust reviewers.. Other times, I really don't.

Re: Screenshots Disabled in Comic Workshop Miiverse Community

NodesforNoids

I've got friends on Facebook whose 13-16 year old nieces / nephews have exchanged or admitted to have exchanged nude pictures on that site.
The fact is, there's too much posted to be properly moderated without community assistance and often, the community doesn't do anything.
It's not that it isn't offensive material, it's that alot of the people viewing it are just as starved for attention as the posters.
The protection Nintendo wants is the 'selfies' which could be so-called 'signed photos'. As in, a photo that contains the person's name or other restricted information. I've heard of a site here in Canada (Nexopia) where 30+ males were hiding their age, meeting and having sex with 14-16 year old girls.
Realistically, as much as I'm not a fan of censorship, I just hate that kind of crap. 18+? You'd kill the app in a day.

Re: Nintendo of America Launches Camp Miiverse Challenge

NodesforNoids

It's funny how there's this rather innocuous little 'Camp Miiverse' and so many of us see the team aspect as a nice cover for how individualistic it truly is, but then I see the posters.
All these diverse characters and views and opinions.
sinalefa (who kinda reminds me of Leafa from SAO), rjejr, ricklongo and MrWalkieTalkie, I feel like I see your posts so often, NL has become a preety interesting community.
There's so much diversity here, some are open and experimental, others reserved and traditional. It's my go to Nintendo site.

Re: Master Reboot to Arrive on the Wii U eShop on 24th July

NodesforNoids

On the topic of Master Reboot, it looks like the halfway mark between The Letter and Another World.
Kind of reminds me of some of the futuristic segments from Cloud Atlas while also managing to give off a F.E.A.R. sort of vibe.
Can't be worse than the Letter, that's for sure. Or Gravity Badgers.
Who knows, it seems like the indies on Wii U are learning by their 2nd or 3rd projects.
Affordable Space Adventures looks alot more intriguing to me than Knytt Underground or Bumpie's Party, but that might be just me.

Re: Mario Kart 8 Secures Place as Top-Selling SKU in NPD June Sales, With Hardware Boost for Wii U

NodesforNoids

When the Club Nintendo free game promotion ends, then Nintendo needs to be more anxious. To be honest, I don't see Watch Dogs carrying number 1 through July, though I do see MK8's numbers staying constant.
Remember though, buying a system and a game (or a bundle) is never going to produce the comparable sales of one game by itself.
Judging by Yokai Watch 2, MH4 and Pokemon X / Y's numbers in Japan, the 3DS is just now hitting full stride.

Re: Nintendo Download: 17th July (North America)

NodesforNoids

Nintendo doesn't seem keen in dishing out the proposed 9 million for Rare's DKC, Jet Force Gemini, and DK64 or the proposed 14 million for Banjo Kazooie so it's pretty plain to see that Nintendo is waiting for the Wii U to take off. How many systems sold? An economist friend of mine is pretty pessimistic. To the tune of 22 million systems sold.
From what I heard, the 3 games are under a single banner, seeing as Microsoft can't use DK and apparently has zero interest in JFG. Banjo Kazooie, on the other hand, is one I've heard MS is VERY interested in doing an HD re-release for.
All this is pretty negative, I realize, and could pertain to hundreds more games (Square Enix, Konami, Sega to name a few). On the plus side, Wooden Sen Sey drops onto the NA eShop next week. After a few overly simplistic titles, it looks like Neko has finally found a solid action platformer.

Re: Nintendo Download: 17th July (North America)

NodesforNoids

For 8 dollars on PSN, I got Wild Arms 1 and 2, Syphon Filter 1, 2 and 3, the Legend of Dragoon and a new costume for FF Dissidia 012.
The same price as one SNES VC game.
Nintendo, if you're reading this, you're about to drop the last ball. You're a blind juggler and you're losing your audience.
Why does Miiverse support crap like The Letter? The dev engages with his audience, responds and seems to want to make it better.
Is it pure garbage? Sounds like it. Is he still doing a better job catering to his fans? If not, why are we getting ONE VC game when literally NOTHING else is out this week on Wii U?
Drop the 'Club Nintendo was our focus' excuses and start taking this seriously again. There's alot of games coming out, eventually, yes, but I'm not so far invested that I won't just drop your half baked console like a bad habit.

Re: New Fatal Frame Will Be Spooking The Wii U In Japan This September

NodesforNoids

Hey Ralek, what do Bayonetta, The Devil's Third, Ninja Gaiden, ZombiU and others do to the system's supposed 'family only' imagery you're suggesting?
Eternal Darkness ring a bell? How about Resident Evil 0, 1 and 4?
Honestly, it's people that sing the strongest praise for first party games that makes people think Nintendo gamers only play and buy Nintendo games.
Which is never completely true.
Assassin's Creed 3 had the best per system install rate for any of its releases. Maybe gamers got confused and thought it was Mario..?
Nah, it was because it had good marketing.
Nintendo system owners are actually pretty diverse, it's the devs who view Nintendo's sales and feel intimidated that reduced systems like the Gamecube to background status.
The Wii was Nintendo abandoning 3rd party ideals and doing their own thing, like they should have been doing all along.
As long as there are those gamers who swear by Nintendo's standard above all others, there will be a stigma against them.

Re: New Fatal Frame Will Be Spooking The Wii U In Japan This September

NodesforNoids

This and Dragon Quest X are two games that should have had confirmed western releases already. Then again, gaming isn't a hobby to companies like Square Enix and Koei Tecmo. They're multimillion dollar ventures that, in some cases, can become multibillion dollar ventures.
Point being, if Hyrule Warriors does well, KT will release this here.

Re: Takashi Tezuka: Mario Maker Won't Move Quite Like the Original Mario Bros.

NodesforNoids

30$ for the game (with an online community and near endless levels, two seperate graphics engines and a music editor) they could do a 10$ art pack (they'd likely do 7-10$ per art style, considering the coding for each individual set) and a 10$ physics pack (seeing as they haven't used the truly 'retro' physics in over 20 years, I doubt they'd have an easily translated set just lying around and would have to rewrite the entire physics engine).

Re: Nintendo Goes Download-Only With The 2014 Club Nintendo Elite Rewards

NodesforNoids

EVERYONE agreed Nintendo needed to drop the Wii for the Wii U to succeed. EVERYONE. And yet, here we are complaining about a lack of support for the Wii. Nintendo gamers, officially the most spoiled, self-righteous in the industry.
15$ soundtrack vs 40$ game.
Injustice! Time to complain! NES Remix? I already have these things! FOUL! FOUL!
Pardon my Catholic, but christ. How many people on here buy 1-2 games a year or don't own a 3DS or Wii U? I'm thinking the number is pretty high.
And you want to be rewarded for buying the first Pokemon Black on DS or SM Galaxy on Wii when you know full well you got the game for 10$. Yeah, let's reward YOU.
Same people that refused to buy a Wii U and MK8 because you didn't like the free retail games they offered. Entitled. That's Nintendo gamers.
I hope Nintendo gets out of the industry the day Zelda U comes out. To spare them from such useless 'fans'.
I see now why PS / XBox fans have such hatred towards Nintendo and its fanbase.

Re: Sega Still Considering Its Options For The Wii U Virtual Console

NodesforNoids

Naturally, the other 4 are Nintendo, not some weird system like 3DO, Turbographx or Atari Lynx / Jaguar.
Those coveted games being Evangelion 64, Terranigma, the original Mother (Earthbound Zero is a great fanslation) and...
wait for it..
..
..
..
..
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance.
Ok, so pretty typical answer, but the game was fun and tough as nails with hundreds of hours of replay value. Once you discovered that each death impacts the narrative, that is.

Re: Sega Still Considering Its Options For The Wii U Virtual Console

NodesforNoids

16 of my top 20 dream VC releases are Sega VC games. Burning Rangers, Radiant Silvergun, Gunstar Heroes, Guardian Heroes, PSIV, Shining Force 2 and Blue Stinger (An arcade RE??) to name a few.
So many great games that could be revisited too. Streets of Rage, Comix Zone, Vectorman and some much needed updates to both Phantasy Star and Shining Force.
Golden Axe was a pretty crappy remake, though I'm sure Altered Beast could be worthwhile. More so than the original anyways.

Re: Golden Sun: The Lost Age Hitting Japanese Wii U Virtual Console Next Week

NodesforNoids

I'd not only love for this game to be available in the eShop but to have the same password carry-over as the original.
I remember over leveling my original characters (to max some items, money and unlock every spell) and throttling Lost Age's final boss.
Which, as any GS fan can attest to, is never the hardest boss in the game.
You can be cheap, it's just a long, drawn out process.

Re: Feature: A Week of Super Smash Bros. Wii U and 3DS Screens - Issue Forty Six

NodesforNoids

While SSB's fourth entry has had a longer build and more character trailers than most Nintendo games in the company's history, it still doesn't have a Wii U release date. Two Wii U games have been given dates recently though.
Whereas Wii U is currently facing a 2 month schedule with just one definitive retail title (One Piece Unlimited World Red isn't even at retail for the Wii U in NA) both Lego Batman 3 and Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric have been given November 11th.
I hope they change the day to the 12th in Canada though. Remembrance Day is the 11th and shouldn't be kept as a release day.

Re: Sony: PS4 Is "Welcoming Back" Wii Owners Who Skipped PS3 And 360 Last Gen

NodesforNoids

Hmm, this can only suggest that Wii owners are askewing Wii U, 360 AND high end PC gaming in favor of the PS4. The question remains though: what are they buying it for? Their now teenaged kids, the horsepower or Sony's brand name? As their TV division is dwindling, cellphones and portable media devices are selling dismally and their PC software department is facing disbandment, Sony's entire corporationis reliant on the PS4's success.
But again, why are people buying it? Current market value can''t seriously be perceived to be that high. And yet, people buy it in droves.

Re: Nintendo and Koei Tecmo Hosting Fatal Frame Broadcast on 17th July in Japan

NodesforNoids

Personally, I still think the perfect Wii U games would be a brand new Clocktower. The Gamepad was basically made for point and click, swipe and craft. It's the whole reason games like Mario Maker, Scribblenauts, Pushmo and Art Academy look so enticing.
Clocktower was always about defense and survival, building traps and staying alive. With the microphone (trying to stay quiet) and the gyroscope / accelerometer (trying to stay still), horror games could be HUGE on a Wii U that's still hurting for new games.
Just thinking about playing a Clive Barker inspired game, or maybe one by Japan's diverse writers, gets my arm hairs tingling.
Coukd be great, but I'm an optimist that way.

Re: Nintendo and Koei Tecmo Hosting Fatal Frame Broadcast on 17th July in Japan

NodesforNoids

Nintendo doesn't get horror titles..? The Letter, Fatal Frame, Resident Evil 0 exclusive, Resident Evil remake exclusive, Resident Evil 4 timed exclusive, Eternal Darkness, Resident Evil Revelations timed exclusive, Cursed Mountain, Dementium, ZombiU and Alone in the Dark, just to name a few.
Obviously there are others with ties to horror, like SMT, Resident Evil 2 and of course, 999 and it's sequel.

As a side note, Best Buy Canada is a bit slow. As this run of sales wouldn't start until Sunday, the weekly flyer usually terminates on Thursdays with new ads going out on Fridays. So the deal may apply, we just don't get the same sort of notice.
This week, anyone into AC may want to check out BB Canada early. A few others are 20$, with ACIV being the newest and most notable.
