Re: Gear.Club Unlimited 2 Speeds Onto Switch 4th December, New Screenshots And Car Roster Revealed

Mii_duck

On portability - I used to take my 3DS with me as often as I could for the streetpasses, but never played it in public.

I've taken Switch on holiday, but just to play in the hotel/B&B room. What portability means to me (and this is a massive, massive plus) is that I can play on the TV in the living room, and very simply continue to play later on the TV in the bedroom - how easy is that with any other console? Or I can have a lazy Sunday morning and play handheld in bed (no dirty puns intended).

I've owned couple of generations of PlayStations, but don't have the money or interest in investing in more than one system now. So Nintendo it is because it suits my life.

Re: Talking Point: Do We Still Need Review Scores?

Mii_duck

How about we go back to the old days and have scores out of ten for -

Graphics
Sound
Gameplay
Difficulty
Addictiveness
Overall

Obviously we'd have to add

FPS (Docked)
FPS (Undocked)
Age of port

To keep the comments section happy.

Personally with so many games coming out recently I check genre, then skim the start of the review before checking the score at the bottom.

If I'm still interested (and that could be for a heroically bad score, as well as for a game I'm interested in, be it 7/10 or 10/10) I'll read the whole review.

Re: Site News: We Want Your Help To Become Even Better

Mii_duck

I don't get this issue with 'clickbait' titles that some have, to be honest.

Do people slap their foreheads and yell "I've been fooled again!" when they read the articles?

Surely a little rational thought leads you know how the article is going to go? The sub-heading normally give a big clue.

Re: Site News: We Want Your Help To Become Even Better

Mii_duck

A small point, but when you have articles on "xxxxxx game announced", it's usually accompanied with (just) the launch trailer.

Which is fine, but screenshots would be appreciated too, to see what the game is like without having to watch a video.

Do I need to add "when I'm taking a sneaky look at the site at work"?

Re: Pokémon GO ‘Friends’ And Trading Services Are Now Live

Mii_duck

@SuperC142 - my daughter is eight and doesn't have a phone yet (she's commandeered my tablet though) and it makes me sad to think that she won't be able to trade with her parents when she does eventually get PoGo.

If you'd feel comfortable sharing your friend code, I'll send you a gift - you can tell your son it's for him, a gift from England.

Re: Pokémon GO ‘Friends’ And Trading Services Are Now Live

Mii_duck

@SuperC142 - it seems a mistake for a company like Nintendo that has a strong eye on the family market, not to include levels of parental control. I have my fingers crossed for you that something happens soon to allow you to trade with your children.

@SethNintendo - I'm not one for crazes, but when PoGo first came out it was brilliant.
I remember being sat on the grass in our local park with my wife and daughter, enjoying the sun with iced lattes.

We were between a Pokestop on a memorial tree and a Pokestop on the pool and fountain. We watched so many people walk by, pausing and looking at their phones - they were obviously doing PoGo, as we're we. It just felt so good, it made me smile, that there was this connection with people and the world, even if we weren't actually engaging face to face.

Re: Arcade Archives: Donkey Kong Is Available Now On Switch eShop In North America & Japan, Arrives Tomorrow In Europe

When I was a very, very young lad, my parents would meet up with friends at a pub on a Saturday night. I'd play with their kids in the woods nearby, riding my Raleigh Grifter till it was dark then we'd go inside.
In the reception area, under the stairs outside the bar, was a tabletop arcade machine. The games would change occasionally - Space Invaders, Asteroids and then, one amazing night - Donkey Kong. (It wasn't a retro pub - I really am that old.) I can still remember our excitement and the fun we had trying to beat each screen.

Then one night Donkey Kong Jr. appeared! It was such a step forward!

I'm not sure whether to buy this or let the memories be...

Re: V-Rally 4 Drifts Onto Nintendo Switch This September

Mii_duck

Rather excited about this. I seem to remember it didn't review as well as Colin McRae back in the old days (loved the first McRae game on PS1, couldn't get to grips with McRae2) but I crave a decent racer with real cars.

Gear Club appears to be a half-baked disappointment so I left it alone, but I'll be looking forward to this.

Re: Feature: The Most Exciting Indie Games Coming to Nintendo Switch In 2018

Mii_duck

"If I was given a choice between Indies or 3rd party developers, I'd choose 3rd party every time." - @SLIGEACH_EIRE

Slig? My I introduce you to 2k Sports? Fill your boots lad, feel the third party polish.

On the subject of ports, do Xbox and PlayStation fans argue over which version of a game came first when they're released simultaneously?
"Yours is the port!"
"No, yours is!"

I just want good games, don't care if they are a few years old, were on other systems first or how big the budget of the developer is.

Re: Nintendo Announces Labo, A Range Of Interactive DIY Toys For Switch

Mii_duck

Oh gawd no.

I mean, it's a bit of a family tradition here that I get models to build at Christmas, and it always goes really well - until a snap a tab off or bend something I shouldn't and it's game over, and ruin the spirt of Christmas by inventing new and inventive swear words.

Actually this could be fun and rather brilliant... but not when being a Nintendo fan was finally gaining some credibility.

Re: Soapbox: Let 2018 Be The Year The Third-Party Exclusive Takes Over On Nintendo Switch

Mii_duck

I feel like a bit of a dinosaur here, but I've only ever been a one platform guy. Be that 48k ZX Spectrum, Amiga, PS1... then I went Nintendo. 3DS and now Switch.

I'm totally stoked we get LA Noire (gawd, that ending...), Skyrim, Doom - these are titles I never thought I'd get to play cos I don't have the time, money or inclination for a multi-platform house.

I don't really care about the age of a game or if it's an old port or platform exclusivity - just give me good games.

Re: Site News: A Fond Farewell from Nintendo Life Editor, Thomas Whitehead

Mii_duck

Good luck Thomas, and thank you for all your work on the site.

I'll miss the reviews and the live streams from the showcases etc, they were always a pleasure.

I came here when the UK 'Official Nintendo Magazine' and website closed, and found it a fine place. It treads the line right in my opinion - the enthusiasm of a fan but also critical when needed, and I always enjoyed the opinion pieces. Thank you for all you put in.

On the subject of your replacement... it's not @SLIGEACH_EIRE is it?

Re: Review: Mantis Burn Racing (Switch eShop)

Mii_duck

@FTL and @OorWullie - thanks for the discussion and views.

I was so close to pulling the trigger and buying this for a car fix - as Gear.club seems half-baked and over-priced but looking at videos I was concerned that the cars seemed so slow. No review mentioned this.

Really wish there was a demo. I know it's 'only' £15 but Resi is around that, plus it's money I could plow into Zelda DLC or Skyrim or... or... or...

Re: Resident Evil Revelations Collection Isn't Getting A Physical Release On Switch In Europe

Mii_duck

@Zool - I still have a boxed Zool for the Amiga! I tried it a few months ago, which was interesting. Still fun though.

You could always delete a finished game from your card? Yes, selling it on is nice, but for me when I consider a game I think of enjoyment and potential hours played vs price.

If the equation ads up I buy it, no thought of resale.

I'm not loaded, so currently in a dither over LA Noire, Skyrim, Resi and... well, loads.

Re: Resident Evil Revelations Collection Isn't Getting A Physical Release On Switch In Europe

Mii_duck

Each game is only £20 though? That seems good value (even though I paid £30-odd for Resi on the 3DS and sold it for £4 to CEX when the Switch Version was announced).

I can understand people being upset at having to buy an (or many) expensive memory cards - but really, this is the way gaming is going, it's a fight that's lost.

I kinda like firing up my system and deciding what I fancy playing, rather than swapping carts.

Re: Review: Lumo (Switch)

Mii_duck

I could still argue that Knightlore on the 48k(!) ZX Spectrum is the greatest game ever made.

(To be fair my memory isn't what it was. I can't actually remember what it was, but I think it used to be better.)

It was genuinely a new thing, never done before, a total step change - seeing it, playing it was a wonder. Even now, it looks charming. I'm sure there must be YouTube vids of it.

I feel genuinely lucky to have lived through the step changes in games, from Space Invaders and Asteroids to Donkey Kong at the arcades.
The moments that made me go 'wow' at home, think "this is a while new thing", drifting in and out of gaming then playing Tomb Raider, Gran Tourismo, Metal Gear Solid. And now - up for debate, obviously - Breath of the Wild.

So yeah, well up for this game. A tad pricey though.
