Re: Poll: Where Do You Currently Stand on ARMS and Splatoon 2?

Mii_duck

@ThanosReXXX - I still haven't worked out how to do bold or italics on this site!

I'm not going to say ARMS is a great game because I haven't spent enough time with it, but I will say it is definitely worth a try - more than maybe any other game you have to experience it rather than watch on YouTube.

Ultimately it may or may not work, but it's definitely worth suspending cynicism for and giving a try.

Re: Poll: Where Do You Currently Stand on ARMS and Splatoon 2?

Mii_duck

Having played ARMS at the London launch event - if shops run demo units then the Switch will REALLY begin to sell itself to the doubters.

Now, I wasn't a mad keen fan, because I only had a short time with it to learn the basics and got slightly frustrated, but there are nuances to learn - and I think learning them along with the unique physical control method will be a lot of fun.

It's not Punch Out or any other game. The bits I've seen and played may even flatter to deceive, we shall have to wait and see.

But don't dismiss it until you try it. It's sort of a whole new thing, and as such needs a little time spent with it.

Re: Cars 3: Driven To Win Will Be Screeching Onto Nintendo Switch And Wii U

Mii_duck

I crave some proper driving games on the Switch. A Need for Speed, even a port of Real Racing 3 from mobile please EA (yeah I know, kill the freemium cash cow, though I've sunk 600 hours in it and not paid a penny), or pretty please, I want to see an advert for F1 2017 on Xbox, Playstation AND Switch.

Ridge Racer is the only thing that hit the spot on 3DS - Need for Speed: The Run was as much fun as having the runs and Mario Kart... OK, maybe I'm just not very good but being hit by a shell for the umpteenth time while in sight of the finish line and dropping from 1st to 4th gets a bit boring.

Re: Feature: What Happens When you Play Breath of the Wild as a Multiplayer Game?

Mii_duck

@Priceless_Spork - it only clicked on me after why you thought I said a bad thing.

But yes, "snigger" is roughly the equivalent of "snicker" as used in America.

Isn't language wonderful?

There are quite a few other differences between the meanings of words for the UK and US ("" being a famous one) but most it's best not to mention on a family forum!

Re: Feature: What Happens When you Play Breath of the Wild as a Multiplayer Game?

Mii_duck

Brilliant article, made me smile.

I was always a Playstation fan, cos Nintendo is for kids right? Not serious grown men like me who want to power oversteer supercars, blow up helicopters and drown Ms Croft for the "Uuuh" noise she makes...

Then I met the girl who would become my wife. She introduced me to the DS, I quite liked it (Grand Theft Auto and Ninja Gaiden opened my eyes) and then a supermarket had a special offer on the 3DS with Ocarina of Time.
"I'll buy it, but I'm determined not to enjoy it". I mean, 'Zelda'? Snigger. Hardly sounds like a game for a hardened virtual adventurer like me. But that world opened up, the depth, and I was smitten. I was genuinely a bit choked when... you know... that thing... happens and everything changes.

Fast forward through playing 999, Virtues Last Reward, Ace Attorney together with my wife, each on our own 3DS, helping each other and talking about where we are up to, through being lucky to get tickets for the London launch event to now, with a Switch and Breath of the Wild in the house.

We both took it in turns with our own save files to start, but now I'm happy to watch while my wife plays and explores (still talking about BotW, innuendo fans).
I'll get my own Switch eventually, and as you can't transfer saves I don't see a point in going too far now.

But I love this, her on Zelda, me watching, talking and making suggestions. (In between trying to finish DQ7, 100 hours in now) - it's fun, and that's what we all need, right? I am so lucky to be married to a (Nintendo) gamer.

Re: Have You Seen The Hidden Message Inside Your Switch Pro Controller?

Mii_duck

Well, ProjectCafe I'm making an assumption that you are a bit of a windowlicker and therefore assume everyone else is?

I can't say I have ever had the slightest interest in licking a cartridge.

I do however, know a little about food production factories, those lines that package sandwiches. Seriously, being concerned about old saliva on your cartridge is the least of your problems.

Re: Random: Infamous British Tabloid Takes 1-2-Switch a Bit Too Seriously

Mii_duck

Ah yes. The Sun.

For our overseas friends this is the 'news' paper that is famous for Page 3, where each day there is a large photo of a topless Page 3 lovely.

Yes, in a newspaper, that most unbiased, fair and unsexist guardian of our morals.

To be fair as a teenager in a pre-internet world I'd sneak a peek and contribute to the share value of Kleenex, but now I wouldn't touch that rag if I was paid to.

Everyone gets the innuendo of the milking game. Me, my wife when I played against her (she won - marvellous hands), the cheerful blonde American girl demonstrating it at the launch event who smiled gamely at my "Sorry, I'm not used to lasting so long"...

It's just a daft, harmless thing.

And I can assure our younger male readers playing 1-2-Switch doesn't make you go blind or grow hairs on the palms of your hands.

Re: Matching Nintendo Switch Joy-Cons Sure Look Pretty

Mii_duck

@Alshain01 - I think that was some good (and good) old fashioned leg pulling, rather than bias.

I rather like what Nintendo are doing here. It's the grey/black all the way for me, cos it looks more 'grown up' and techy, but I completely respect the views of those - including my wife - who prefer the colours because they are more 'fun'.

All bases and tastes covered!

Re: Hands On: Trying Out the Nintendo Switch on its Public Tour

Mii_duck

Seriously, what do you people want?

It was a free event, you got to choose which games you played, if any. You had to join a small queue for most games but not all.
Sometimes you'd get chatting in the queue to other guests - or to the demonstrators who were just walking around. I had a few chats with the demonstrators about old games, games they grew up with - not preaching from a crib sheet, it was sharing memories. Gamer memories.

At one point I heard one of the demonstrators talking behind me with a Nintendo employee who was touring around, about wanting to get into 'the business'.

The Nintendo woman mentioned she had worked on the translation side in various countries, so I had to say hello cos I wanted to say how much I enjoyed the translation in Bravely and Dragon's Quest.
(Plus she had amazing buttocks like two Volkswagen Beetles fighting over a parking space, but that's another story).

Bravely and DQ weren't in house translations - but my point is everyone was a gamer. There was no coercion. Just people playing games, enjoying the free chance to do so with enthusiastic demonstrators, no pressure to buy... just a really fun time.

And free burger, chips and drinks for all you freebie fans.

Seriously, where is the coercion in that? Free games and food, no hard sell or indeed any sell... Yet Nintendo still got it wrong?

Re: Hands On: Trying Out the Nintendo Switch on its Public Tour

Mii_duck

@Franklin - That makes no sense.

Are they supposed to employ people who don't like Nintendo and make it a drab experience?

Maybe they recruited people who like Nintendo to be demonstrators, offered the job to people who are genuine fans of the games- crazy idea I know.

Still, you keep on commenting about something you have no first hand knowledge or experience of, that's what makes the Internet go round.

Re: Hands On: Trying Out the Nintendo Switch on its Public Tour

Mii_duck

@Franklin - "Looks too much like coerced fun."

Exactly. At the UK launch event they took our phones, photos of loved ones and house keys off us. We were herded into a room, to the sound of Isabelle ordering over the P. A. "Attention residents, you **will** have fun".

No, hold on, what actually happened was we wondered around, chatting to the smiling, enthusiastic demonstrators, having conversations and laughs and playing games.
Those demonstrators deserve medals, apart from two exceptions at the end of the day they never flagged, were genuinely into the whole thing and showing Switch off.

Noticeable also, that I didn't hear one negative comment from any of the other guests about Switch or the games. Obviously we were all Nintendo fans, but even so, the games, the pleasure in them was the important thing. And the games are good, the Switch is a really good thing.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE - "Any chance Nintendo could come to Dublin? Nope! They never do."

Maybe because they know where you live?

Re: Video: Ultra Street Fighter II's First Person Mode Looks Like A Throwback To Wonky Motion Controls

Mii_duck

In fact, I keep coming back to this feeling.

Reading these boards, they appear to be a total joy vacuum, that Nintendo is doing everything wrong.

Of course they aren't perfect, of course they will make mistakes - but at the UK launch event all I saw was positivity, people smiling and laughing, playing games and apparently really enjoying them. Yes, even 1-2-Switch.

And surely that's why we are here, right? Because we like playing the games.
We like the escapism, we like the challenge. We like the stories, the emotions. We want to be immersed.

I want to pootle around Hyrule, just seeing the sights. I want to master the block and grab in ARMS, the jumping attack.
I want to have fun, not worry about how shiny the graphics are compared to another console, not worry about how many megatits of power the thing has...I just want to enjoy the games for what they are.

Re: Video: Ultra Street Fighter II's First Person Mode Looks Like A Throwback To Wonky Motion Controls

Mii_duck

@gatorboi352 - no, it probably won't sell more of the system. We don't need it.

But I've played ARMS.

The motion controls add a lot. They add fun, they add another skill to learn: timing, movement, blocking, attacking. Did I mention it was fun?

The Street Fighter video does look very "eh?" but I can assure you, for ARMS at least it works.

It seems some think motion controls a bit childish, not 'professional gamer'. That's OK, it's an opinion. But sometimes you just want a bit of a giggle with a game or two, you know?

Re: Poll: Does Nintendo Switch Need Streaming Apps and a Web Browser, Or Is It All About Games?

Mii_duck

Here we go again...

"HD rumble is a gimmick, Nintendo has shot themselves in the foot and I'm not buying Switch...Hold on, Zelda doesn't have HD rumble? What are Nintendo playing at? I'm not gonna buy Switch now."

"Switch isn't powerful enough, where are the AAA games? Nintendo has shot themselves in the foot and I'm not buying Switch... Hold on, where's Virtual Console so I can play outdated, graphically unimpressive games? What are Nintendo playing at? I'm not gonna buy Switch now.'

I dunno. I just want to play a lot of the announced games for this year and just enjoy it for what it is, not moan because it also doesn't do the job of my toaster.

Re: Talking Point: Considering Nintendo's Portable Future

Mii_duck

Frankly, as a 46 year old currently 52 hours into DQ7, who wants to move into his Animal Crossing town (just me who has those dreams about talking animals on two feet in the real world now, right?) I'd be happy for the 3DS to continue for many a year.

Fantasy Life, the Bravelys, Resi Revelations, DoA, Castlevania, Ace Attorney etc etc... I don't need better graphics or more power.

The clamshell, the portability and the chuffin' game play is enough for me.

I remember seeing Donkey Kong for the first time, it had replaced either Space Invaders or Asteroids in a pub my parents used to go to. It was a revelation. I fell into games hard... then as I grew up drifted away.

The PS1 got me back, purely because of an advert on tellie for Gran Tourismo. Metal Gear Solid blew me away, and Tomb Raider... I remember creeping step by step at the start, conditioned by those old pixel perfect demands of platformers like Donkey Kong, Hunchback and Manic Miner.

Now I'm married with kids - so far from the target audience marketing imagines, but the 3DS fits my requirements perfectly.

Things change of course, but the 3DS has been a wonderful box of delights.

I'll miss it.

Re: Feature: Reflecting on Time Spent With the Nintendo Switch

Mii_duck

Again, I don't want to be all "you weren't there, man" but I was lucky enough to go to the London launch event.

And what I saw was happy people enjoying games. Stood uncomplaining in the queue for Zelda, discussing time lines, a few of us getting our 3DSs out to check street passes.
Bantering with mates and the demonstrators playing ARMS.
And yes, people giggling at the daftness of the 1-2-Switch games.

I saw people just enjoying the damn thing.

I think you all will too, once you get your hands on it. Really, Nintendo have nailed the hardware side. It's a lovely, sophisticated and desirable shiny object.

Price? Yes. It is expensive, but consoles are.

Extra controllers expensive? Yep, I agree, but not essential.

Lack of launch games? C'mon. Let's be realistic, there has to be a balance here, there aren't the resourses to spaff loads of games at launch, but looking at NintendoLife there is a rich schedule for the year.

Nintendo never has been, and never will be the coolest kid in class. But it is the one that you'll want to be a friend for life, if you give it time to show you all it is.

Re: Ultra Street Fighter II's Online And Ranked Modes Get Detailed

Mii_duck

Could someone explain Street Fighter to me please?

I mean, the last time I played it was on a thing called an Amiga (I preferred Mortal Kombat on that system).

Looking at game play videos of the latest versions... well, it still seems to have a tiny amount of animation frames, like looking at a flick book. What am I missing here?

Really enjoyed Tekken on the PS1 and Dead or Alive on the 3DS so I'm not anti-pagga games, but the appeal of Street Fighter always passed me by.

Re: Racing Apex Puts The Pedal To The Metal For A Nintendo Switch Release

Mii_duck

@gcunit - I can't decide if it's retro cool or just rubbish!

Driving games are a real weak point on Nintendo, which is a shame because it's my favourite genre. I just hope Need for Speed gets ported from the WiiU (slim chance, I know) to Switch.

It frustrates that my phone can run a game like Real Racing 3, yet the 3DS was lumbered with toot like The Run or Asphalt. Admittedly Ridge Racer was pretty decent though.
Mario Kart never did it for me to be honest.

Re: Talking Point: Let's Explore What Could Be Done with HD Rumble on the Nintendo Switch

Mii_duck

@ThanosReXXX - unless my memory is going fuzzy, the 'plus' button was used to bring up the inventory in Zelda.

Does anyone remember what a big thing it was, what a cool thing when Psycho Mantis told you to put your controller down in Metal Gear Solid (on PS1) and made it rumble over the table? Now everyone seems to be "Rumble? Whatevs."

I didn't play the ice cubes game at the launch event, but the rumble definitely added something to the experience of other games. It's just something a bit extra, you know?

As @DizziParadise said, the joycons are solid little lumps of funkiness (OK, she didn't say that exactly) but I was really impressed with how well put together they were, certainly compared to my creaky New 3DS XL.

Must admit I found them a little unresponsive when playing ARMS, which was the **only** reason for @DizziParadise kicking my bottom, definitely nothing to do with my skill or reactions...

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Switch Plan is Starting to Take Shape

Mii_duck

Right. I think I have my head around this now.

To be a success the Switch needed to have -

500Gb memory minimum.
24 hour battery life.
Four controllers bundled with it.
Zelda, Mario Kart (all new), Splattoon (all new), Metroid/Star Fox/CoD/Fifa/Batman/Animal Crossing/Skyrim/Zool/Manic Miner on launch day.
Free on-line with the entire Nintendo back catalogue on virtual console.
Be more powerful than a powerful thing.
Have an attachment that tickles your neither regions with a velvet glove.
Cost £150.

And it'd still fail because it doesn't make toast.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Switch Plan is Starting to Take Shape

Mii_duck

Ah memories.

The Atari 2600, going to a toy shop after school on Fridays and carefully choosing a cartridge to rent for the night.
"Mum? They've got Raiders of the Lost Ark! Can I have it for the weekend?"

I was a 3DS ambassador, got the 20 free games - and to be honest I don't see the appeal of VC stuff. It had it's time.

We seem to have a split between those who want all the new titles, the big names and those who want all the VC.

It's gonna take time. The 3DS has a fantastic library, for my tastes it's just had/having its richest year in terms of games (Ace Attorney, DQ, Bravely AC, I got around to finishing Castlevania - not well loved but I really enjoyed it, gonna play through again - and Resi is still on my 'to finish' list with Fantasy Life.

Be patient, give Switch a chance.

Re: Feature: Thoughts on the Nintendo Switch Preview Event in London

Mii_duck

500 tickets plus a guest over four sessions.
We heard bad things about Saturday on a thread on here, but Sunday morning was fine. My name was checked against the list, though they didn't ask for ID.

Apart from one guy all the game 'helpers' were massively friendly, and seemed really into the games in the main. It was really good chatting to them - and someone from Nintendo, she (used?) to work for the translation team.

The guests seemed to be stoked for the games and the Switch - nice change from the negativity on here!

I didn't realise the food was free, as was about to put my hand in my pocket, but wasn't asked to pay.

It was simply a really cool, fun event. Even 1-2-Switch was giggle, but I doubt I'd buy it. But Switch and Zelda are on pre-order.

Re: Video: Alex Shares His First Impressions Of The Nintendo Switch With Nintendo UK

Mii_duck

Look, I don't want to sound all "you weren't there, man", but what I took away from the launch event is that Switch is a very good thingie indeed.

It seriously is.

Bottom line is it's a nice object. It's a lovely new shiny thing.

Yes, price, yes not enough games for you yet, but I would defy any gamer to come away from the Launch event having played the variety of games from Zelda serious to giggling milking a cow (gawd knows how many smutty comments the girl on the stand had to endure) to not think Nintendo have done good here.

There is so much potential.

It needs the games, it needs hitting with games hard, I won't dispute that. But as hardware, seeing the potential, the depth of options it can offer, I think Nintendo have nailed it - wait until you get your hands on one. It's a good thing.

Re: Video: Alex Shares His First Impressions Of The Nintendo Switch With Nintendo UK

Mii_duck

I can only play Zelda for three hours non-stop in bed?
If only I had the energy to reach for the power lead on the bedside cabinet.

Seriously, when do you ever play on a handheld for three hours away from a plug, or portable power bank?

I keep coming back to Arms; I think it's a game you have to take time to learn rather than being a button masher - or punch thrower - but a controller in each fist blocking, grabbing, jumping and moving all seemed natural. It felt physically involved.
I couldn't help think "it's all here already, apart from the VR headset".

Re: Video: Alex Shares His First Impressions Of The Nintendo Switch With Nintendo UK

Mii_duck

Poor line-up: Zelda, Mario kart (deluxe), Arms (be open minded), an RPG, Street Fighter etc all in launch window. Games are too expensive but you all want more?

Not enough memory: it's expandable.

No mention of how much on-line is going to be: could be 99p a month then? Or the same as other consoles. Wait and see.

Over priced: can't argue on accessories but they aren't essential. The console? Yeah, maybe top end on what I expected.

Third party support: wait and see I guess, if the promises come true.

Analogue buttons: yeah, a shame but how many games would utilise them?

Re: Video: Alex Shares His First Impressions Of The Nintendo Switch With Nintendo UK

Mii_duck

The joy cons are a very nice bit of kit, they feel robust, various levels of rumble and really add a new dimension to games like Arms. There is suprising depth to that game incidentally, it could be a sleeper hit, given a chance.

I tried a pro controller and I don't think it's a must have. Joy cons with standard connector seem fine.

Of course everyone was paid to be super happy and enthusiastic at the launch event, but the great unwashed (including me) seemed genuinely impressed with the Switch.

Yes we all want gazillion games day one, but they will come. Personally I am really positive about the potential of Switch.

Re: Gallery: Treading The Red Carpet At The Nintendo Switch UK Premiere

Mii_duck

Well, after reading this thread last night we were worried about the Sunday morning session, but it seemed lessons had been learned.
Our names were checked at the door, and it wasn't too busy at all inside (still a long wait for Zelda, as you'd expect).
All the staff were friendly and mostly genuinely into the games, even the free food seemed OK.
The pins were handed out at the door with nary a glance at your card (if you asked nicely the staff were happy to stamp any games you may have missed anyway).

I'm really sorry some of you had a bad experience, but I really enjoyed it!
