Re: Frame Rate And Resolution For Pikmin 3 Deluxe Demo Seemingly Revealed

Imerion

@PcTV Nah, there isn't too much of that going on in Pikmin 3 (especially compared to other Wii U games such as BotW) and the Switch CPU is much faster than the one in Wii U. A more likely combination is problems with scaling up assets and simple lazyness (probably in combination with Covid19 voes). I still hope the full game will be 1080p, but I doubt it. Still one of the best games I've played though, especially in multiplayer. And the extra content is more important to me than graphical fidelity, so I'll most likely get it again.

Re: Image & Form's New Game Required Power The Switch Didn't Have, So It Did A Deal With Xbox

@fadedcolors Daemon X Machina also used UE4, and it runs great with the full screen resolution in handheld and 1080p docked despite loads of action and advanced physics. Hellblade also looks and run fantastic on Switch. Other great ports include Ashen, Darksiders Genesis, recent versions of Dauntless, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Observer, Trials of Mana and of course Dragon Quest 11. UE4 has also received some rather heavy optimization for Switch since Yoshi and many others released due to Epics work on Fortnite. I'm not saying it would run in 720p@60FPS in handheld, but dynamic resolution with 30 FPS is feasible and more on both when docked.

Re: Talking Point: So, Where Does Switch Fit Into Sony And Microsoft's Next Gen Landscape?

Imerion

The idea of streaming games is worrying on so many levels. Download only titles already make it harder to preserve games for the future, but things like stadia or xcloud would make that downright impossible. Not to mention problems availability of games from the same generation. If this somehow ends up like Netflix there could appear situations where you have to stress through a game just to finish before it "rotates out" . I've seen friends do this with TV-series and I never want gaming to end up there. Thankfully, both stadia and apple arcade have failed miserably. I don't see why Microsoft would do better with xCloud.

Re: Review: The Outer Worlds - Obsidian's Fallout-Style RPG Is Worth A Look On Switch

Imerion

@diwdiws Sure, but that was before the 3.6 patch. It did look quite blurry then. Some of the post processing did affect performance enough that turning it off increased the overall resolution. Mainly depth of field blur and setting foliage to medium instead of high. The difference in resolution and clarity in some outside environments were staggering. DF has a good video of that as well, look for the examples later on with some post-processing off, around 10:55: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLKOLverlr0

I experimentet quite a lot with this out of curiosity. What I have on my Switch screen now definitely matches the footage from the low version in that first video. (With both running in 720p). But sure, it might not reach PC medium. I was probably just fooled by the small screen. (The GPD Win is a handeld PC, so its screen is roughly the same size as the Switch's screen.)

Re: Review: The Outer Worlds - Obsidian's Fallout-Style RPG Is Worth A Look On Switch

@diwdiws The comparison was with the PC running on 720p and the monitor was quite small. Might have been different with a larger screen and larger resolution. (This video is not mine, but shows the same hardware: https://www.reddit.com/r/gpdwin/comments/7z0jxb/the_witcher_3_gpd_win_1_testing_ultra_low/) Switch clearly looks miles better than that. But yeah, I see now it says ultra low there, but low also felt slightly worse than the Switch version when I looked at them. I suppose at best of times Switch can fall between low and medium. Perhaps not on a larger screen. I'd suppose PS4 would run on High. The game was probably made with PS4 as focus, so I doubt there is much to add beyond that more than post-processing and higher resolution. Character and environment models was supposed to be the same on Switch as PS4 if I remember right.

Sorry for derailing this thread though. What I wanted to exemplify was merely that since many above have called into question if ports like this really are the same game/experience, the comparison with a PC version on lower settings can be done and begs the question: if you play a game on PC but on lower settings, are you not playing the same game then?

As for The Outer Worlds, the port currently seems to be a less stellar effort than the Witcher III port (or for that matter, Wolfenstein II, Warframe and many other impressive ones). My copy arrives in the mail today, so I'll just wait for that patch (or any patch, there usually comes a long a few that improves performance for most games) and then give it a go. Either way I'm happy to have the game to play, as I don't have any plans on getting another console.

Looking through metacritic most reviewers seem to have had a good time with this, and with that coming patch it should run and look even better. I'm super-hyped to play this on my switch. Been enjoying Witcher 3 since the big update earlier this year and it plays fantastic. After tweaking the graphics settings (tip: disable everything with the word "blur" in it and set sharpening to high) I must say I felt no need to play it on another platform - if my Switch can match a gaming PC on medium settings on a game such as Witcher 3, I'll happily look forward to more ports like this!

Re: Nintendo Earned Almost $2 Billion In Digital Sales This Year, A 72% Yearly Increase

Imerion

Physical for me. For games that only release digitally I even wait about a year in case a physical version appears. Considering how much I like taking out and playing my old games that are long gone from store shelves (real or digital), I see no alternative. As usual other factors play a part too, such as being able to lend games to friends, having a second hand value, not taking up so much storage space, etc.

Re: Schedule A Trip To The Outer Worlds On Switch This March

Imerion

What? who would release a game like this without a real physical version? It's the perfect example of a game I want to be able to take out from my shelf every 5 years and play again taking a different path through the story. It will probably be fantastic and I really really appreciate it has been brought to the Switch, but right now I really hope someone will do a real release. I'd gladly pay at least 10-20€ more for one.

Re: A Witcher 3 Switch Mod Appears To Restore Visual Options Missing From The Retail Game

Imerion

I really wish this and other Switch games always included an option to disable anti-aliasing. It really is an effect I never understood why people like. No matter the type of AA I always seem to prefer as little of it as possible - a sharp picture rather than a blurry one. Will get this game anyway and I'm not into modding though, but I hope more devs will let me disable those dreadful blur-filters in the future. Pixelated is fine, I've played pixelated games most of my life, 3D on Sega Saturn is what I grew up with, but at least it was never blurry (until N64 came along, and even my kid self really didn't like what it did, actually believing the Saturn and Playstation hade better graphics...)

Re: You'll Be Able To Sacrifice Resolution For Frame Rate In Fire Emblem Warriors On Switch

Imerion

For most games I would prefer 1080p, so I'm happy I'm given a choice. I wish Bomberman had that. I'll have to remove the patches to make it run in 1080 again. Usually I prefer to not have settings for things like this though. One of my reasons for playing exclusively on console is that I won't have to fiddle with settings and optimize the game myself. I wont have to think: "Maybe I could get it to look slightly better if I fiddle a bit more...".

Re: Review: Twisted Fusion (Wii U eShop)

I will be buying this too! I like platformers, art seems nice and co-op sounds fun! I'm happy to hear fixes and improvements are on the way though, always nice to know issues will be fixed.

Re: Parent Trap: Is 3DS Download Play The Perfect Family Feature?

Imerion

This really is one of the best features of the 3DS. We use this very often among my friends, and it works so smoothly, up and running after a few minutes. In comparison, getting together to play PC games takes at least 2 hours to get started (if your lucky) and very rarely works well.

I only wish more 3DS games will use this feature!

Re: Review: Shiftlings (Wii U eShop)

Imerion

This seems like a talented developer. Graphics are really nice and go beyond most eShop releases and the focus on co-op is always nice! i bought this, but have still not tried it. A few other games on my backlog. But its nice to hear puzzles are well designed and clever. Looking forward to playing this!
