@PcTV Nah, there isn't too much of that going on in Pikmin 3 (especially compared to other Wii U games such as BotW) and the Switch CPU is much faster than the one in Wii U. A more likely combination is problems with scaling up assets and simple lazyness (probably in combination with Covid19 voes). I still hope the full game will be 1080p, but I doubt it. Still one of the best games I've played though, especially in multiplayer. And the extra content is more important to me than graphical fidelity, so I'll most likely get it again.
Another valid and very important concern to add to the giant pile of other problems and disadvantages these straming systems have. I really truly hope they all crash and burn as hard as Google Stadia.
@fadedcolors Daemon X Machina also used UE4, and it runs great with the full screen resolution in handheld and 1080p docked despite loads of action and advanced physics. Hellblade also looks and run fantastic on Switch. Other great ports include Ashen, Darksiders Genesis, recent versions of Dauntless, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Observer, Trials of Mana and of course Dragon Quest 11. UE4 has also received some rather heavy optimization for Switch since Yoshi and many others released due to Epics work on Fortnite. I'm not saying it would run in 720p@60FPS in handheld, but dynamic resolution with 30 FPS is feasible and more on both when docked.
I get that they did a deal with Microsoft, exclusives are a thing and I'm fine with that. But if it runs on Xbox One it can run on Switch, even if it uses the rather resource-wasting UE4, so I don't buy that excuse.
The idea of streaming games is worrying on so many levels. Download only titles already make it harder to preserve games for the future, but things like stadia or xcloud would make that downright impossible. Not to mention problems availability of games from the same generation. If this somehow ends up like Netflix there could appear situations where you have to stress through a game just to finish before it "rotates out" . I've seen friends do this with TV-series and I never want gaming to end up there. Thankfully, both stadia and apple arcade have failed miserably. I don't see why Microsoft would do better with xCloud.
Sounds like a nice port, which is great to hear. If I could wish for another remake I too would prefer Burnout 3. I really don't like the open world concept and prefer unique tightly designed courses.
Among the best racing games on Switch and looked fantastic even before this update. See it in action and it really makes you realize what the Switch is capable of in the hands of skilled developers. Also has some fantastic use of HD Rumble that really adds to the gameplay.
It's good and reassuring to hear things work out for Nintendo, as I really would like them to continue doing their own thing, their own hardware and focus on consoles.
@diwdiws Sure, but that was before the 3.6 patch. It did look quite blurry then. Some of the post processing did affect performance enough that turning it off increased the overall resolution. Mainly depth of field blur and setting foliage to medium instead of high. The difference in resolution and clarity in some outside environments were staggering. DF has a good video of that as well, look for the examples later on with some post-processing off, around 10:55: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eLKOLverlr0
I experimentet quite a lot with this out of curiosity. What I have on my Switch screen now definitely matches the footage from the low version in that first video. (With both running in 720p). But sure, it might not reach PC medium. I was probably just fooled by the small screen. (The GPD Win is a handeld PC, so its screen is roughly the same size as the Switch's screen.)
@diwdiws The comparison was with the PC running on 720p and the monitor was quite small. Might have been different with a larger screen and larger resolution. (This video is not mine, but shows the same hardware: https://www.reddit.com/r/gpdwin/comments/7z0jxb/the_witcher_3_gpd_win_1_testing_ultra_low/) Switch clearly looks miles better than that. But yeah, I see now it says ultra low there, but low also felt slightly worse than the Switch version when I looked at them. I suppose at best of times Switch can fall between low and medium. Perhaps not on a larger screen. I'd suppose PS4 would run on High. The game was probably made with PS4 as focus, so I doubt there is much to add beyond that more than post-processing and higher resolution. Character and environment models was supposed to be the same on Switch as PS4 if I remember right.
Sorry for derailing this thread though. What I wanted to exemplify was merely that since many above have called into question if ports like this really are the same game/experience, the comparison with a PC version on lower settings can be done and begs the question: if you play a game on PC but on lower settings, are you not playing the same game then?
As for The Outer Worlds, the port currently seems to be a less stellar effort than the Witcher III port (or for that matter, Wolfenstein II, Warframe and many other impressive ones). My copy arrives in the mail today, so I'll just wait for that patch (or any patch, there usually comes a long a few that improves performance for most games) and then give it a go. Either way I'm happy to have the game to play, as I don't have any plans on getting another console.
@diwdiws I did some comparisons and low on PC was definitely worse than Switch after the patch from earlier this year (and after some fiddling with the graphics settings.) As for medium it depended on the situation; they were mainly the same when running around outside but the Switch-version got a bit more blurry in towns and other areas with lots of NPC:s in.
Looking through metacritic most reviewers seem to have had a good time with this, and with that coming patch it should run and look even better. I'm super-hyped to play this on my switch. Been enjoying Witcher 3 since the big update earlier this year and it plays fantastic. After tweaking the graphics settings (tip: disable everything with the word "blur" in it and set sharpening to high) I must say I felt no need to play it on another platform - if my Switch can match a gaming PC on medium settings on a game such as Witcher 3, I'll happily look forward to more ports like this!
Physical for me. For games that only release digitally I even wait about a year in case a physical version appears. Considering how much I like taking out and playing my old games that are long gone from store shelves (real or digital), I see no alternative. As usual other factors play a part too, such as being able to lend games to friends, having a second hand value, not taking up so much storage space, etc.
Considering how well the switch has been selling it seems lots of people prefer a real dedicated and flexible gaming system. It rather sounds like the Financial Times are on the brink of becoming outdated...
What? who would release a game like this without a real physical version? It's the perfect example of a game I want to be able to take out from my shelf every 5 years and play again taking a different path through the story. It will probably be fantastic and I really really appreciate it has been brought to the Switch, but right now I really hope someone will do a real release. I'd gladly pay at least 10-20€ more for one.
I really wish this and other Switch games always included an option to disable anti-aliasing. It really is an effect I never understood why people like. No matter the type of AA I always seem to prefer as little of it as possible - a sharp picture rather than a blurry one. Will get this game anyway and I'm not into modding though, but I hope more devs will let me disable those dreadful blur-filters in the future. Pixelated is fine, I've played pixelated games most of my life, 3D on Sega Saturn is what I grew up with, but at least it was never blurry (until N64 came along, and even my kid self really didn't like what it did, actually believing the Saturn and Playstation hade better graphics...)
The only thing I can think when I see this is: Well, that makes it Almost as cheap as buying real physical copies in the store. Buying physical versions where I live would amount to around 90€, so it doesn't seem that big of a deal if it's only digital releases...
Many cool and smart features there. But it still lacks the thing I want most from an update: Folders! There are so many games now it really needs a practical, customizable way to sort them.
Very hyped for this! Four player splitscreen in a game like this is something I've been longing for, and from what I've read before the physics could be really good as well.
No idea what to think about that pressure sensitivity, but it sure sounds smart if it works. I'm hoping for the best here.
I really liked the Wii-version of the original, so I'll be getting this. But does anyone know if the co-op can still be played in splitscreen? That was the most important feature for me...
I wanted this to sell to get other EA releases. I hope it will sell more in other areas. Problem is, for several stores I went to they didn't display the Switch versions. It's like it didn't even exist, not even being mentioned in pre-order deals. Almost makes me believe foul play is involved somehow.
So happy I can finally have Wiimote-aiming (but JoyCon aiming) again! Some nice, immersive and inituative motion control will be awesome as well. I love that the Switch is bringing this back in a 2.0 version.
For most games I would prefer 1080p, so I'm happy I'm given a choice. I wish Bomberman had that. I'll have to remove the patches to make it run in 1080 again. Usually I prefer to not have settings for things like this though. One of my reasons for playing exclusively on console is that I won't have to fiddle with settings and optimize the game myself. I wont have to think: "Maybe I could get it to look slightly better if I fiddle a bit more...".
So worth it. I'd gladly pay 10$ extra for a physical release, especially if it's a cartridge that should last a lot longer than discs do. A few of the older CD-based games in my collection have already started to go bad, but old NES cartridges work as well as they always did.
I'd usually say frame rate first, but after playing loads of multiplayer matches before the patch without feeling there were any slow control or other non 60 fps issues, I sort of want my 1080p back. An option here would be perfect. Still though, had they not been using the slow Unity this would not be a problem.
That was cool, and very unique! I love the 90:s OS UI. Those fractals are very impressive to watch too. This is the type of titles I want to see on Wii U!
I will be buying this too! I like platformers, art seems nice and co-op sounds fun! I'm happy to hear fixes and improvements are on the way though, always nice to know issues will be fixed.
I loved Deus Ex for Wii U, so I would definitely buy it if it came out for NX. But not otherwise, so I really hope some sort of port will come eventually.
Whoa!! This came out of nowhere and made me so happy! Another arcade-like futuristic racer on the same generation? And it's for Wii U and from skulled VD Dev! I'm super hyped, and I'm sure they can deliver!
This really is one of the best features of the 3DS. We use this very often among my friends, and it works so smoothly, up and running after a few minutes. In comparison, getting together to play PC games takes at least 2 hours to get started (if your lucky) and very rarely works well.
Seriously, as a developer myself I see no reason this couldn't run on Wii U. People need to learn to optimize. Sure, it might require some effort depending on the code. But it's a code issue, not a hardware issue.
I'm very happy they are doing this. I'd much rather buy a complete, real game at once than buy it bit for bit or worst of all, one life at a time. Good move! If it releases in Europe I will buy, if nothing else to support the release of real games instead of pay to win crap.
Please please please let this be true! I played the first episode a few years ago but lost contact with the friend whom I played it with. Was an amazing game as far as I played. Since then I haven't had access to a system its available on, so I would buy this day one!
