Re: Nintendo Download: 7th February (North America)

Liar Princess for sure, it looks fun and just a bit too cute to ignore.

Odallus and Oniken I hear great things about but all the screenshots I've seen have this awful, fake TV screen look to them that I really hope you can turn off. I know there is a big market for sitting on your floor, trying to relive being 12 or whatever but I just want to play good games and if good games sometimes have 8bit graphics then whatever but please spare me the goofy filters and bubble screen effects.

Re: Peter Molyneux Wants To Bring His Next Game To Nintendo Switch

GhostGarrity

I think there are a lot of Nintendo gamers that buy Nintendo consoles to play Nintendo games and not much else. They either have other consoles for other titles or they don't care about them. That's why historically it's been so hard to get third party support. Now with the Switch you have all of a sudden a successful market for small indie PC games along side that Nintendo market and that's what he's talking about, people that want to play $10 steam games but not $60 mainstream AAA titles.

That might sound ridiculous but I think it's actually pretty common, or at least common enough, for people to be bored to death of big open world sandboxy action games and searching for smaller and more focused, crafted linear experiences instead to support its own market. None of my friends with Switches care about SSB or Yoshis Crafted World and I think that's a new thing for Nintendo consoles.

Re: Wargroove's First Patch Has Been Submitted For Approval, Dev Asks For Your Feedback

@Fake-E-Lee

Yeah, one thing I am learning is that the enemy does not make mistakes or waste turns. I'm having to learn to be more aggressive and proactive. It's like the beginning areas are easier because you're given the advantage but if you don't immediately make use of that advantage you're going to have a hard time.

Aside from that I think it looks and plays fantastic. I don't know if I'll stick with it for as long as I initially expected but it's a great game and the presentation is fantastic too. Switch is my first experience with 2D and pixel art graphics but I feel like I've seen enough of it to say that that Wargroove does a good job giving the characters and units a unique and charming identity without going way overboard with the typical Nintendo kitsch.

Re: id Software And Bethesda Still “Investigating” If Rage 2 Would Be Possible On Switch

GhostGarrity

@nhSnork

I was talking about the perspective of the developers, not the users. I'm not a game developer and I haven't worked on software in like twenty years so this is not a direct comparison but often at work I am asked by a customer or even sometimes my boss to do something that will produce only marginal results or for whatever reason have some undesirable aspects that will outweigh its benefits. Now in those situations I will explain why I don't think it's a good idea and I'll usually hear back something along the lines of "the customer is always right blah blah blah and if that's what I want just do it and if I don't like it it's on me" and I still refuse because my name is on my work and at the end of the day I am still responsible for the results I produce. I know that a lot of users are just happy to have Doom on their Switch but I don't think a lot of developers look at the Doom port and want to see their own AAA game with the same marginal performance.

Re: id Software And Bethesda Still “Investigating” If Rage 2 Would Be Possible On Switch

GhostGarrity

I dunno guys, Doom was playable and they didn't break the game porting it but it wasn't really an ideal experience. I know that its about gameplay not graphics but if you're being honest instead of optimistic it was pretty borderline performance wise and really struggled to maintain playable resolution and frame rates. I mean ultimately it succeeded and that is impressive but I don't think a lot of devs are going to look at the Doom port and want to release their own AAA games in the same state. I think Diablo 3 type ports of older games that look and run fantastic make a lot more sense to them.

Re: Persona Q2: New Cinema Labyrinth On 3DS Won’t Include English Voice Work

GhostGarrity

Am I the only one who prefers Celeste style VA? Bad or even pretty good but not great voice acting drives me crazy. It's weird to me to watch characters on screen who talk like they're in a radio drama which is what 99% of "good" voice acting in games sounds like. Anyway, slightly off topic, but surprised that a dub of all things is a deal breaker for so many.

Re: Talking Point: What Do You Want From A Switch Mini?

GhostGarrity

OLED screen, better thumbsticks and fix the awkward symmetry between the controller halves. A d pad on the left and an analog stick on the right that you don't have to move or contort your hand to reach.

I think there are a lot of people, who aren't hardcore Nintendo fans, that wish they would just ditch the weird controls already.

Re: Guide: Upcoming Nintendo Switch Games And Accessories For February And March

GhostGarrity

That keyboard looks ridiculous but I assume it's for some specific game. Maybe a FFXI port because that would both be awesome and is also the first and last time I ever needed a keyboard for a console game.

Liar Princess looks cute and looking forward to replaying all the Final Fantasy games, other than that I think we'll have plenty of time to catch up on the back log.

I'm sure there will be one or two first party games released throughout the year but the rest will come around Christmas.

Re: More Than 8 Million Accounts Are Subscribed To Nintendo Switch Online

GhostGarrity

I paid $20 for it out of the box because I just naturally assumed it was something. Playing online together with Nintendo games is an ordeal and totally not worth it for me and my friends and a bunch of Nintendo games doesn't really add any value to me or most people that aren't already Nintendo fans. I'm sure die hard fans love it but I think most people just try few and screw around for a few minutes before closing it and never opening it again.

Re: Review: Wargroove - A Turn-Based Strategy Classic That Intelligent Systems Would Be Proud Of

GhostGarrity

Never played Fire Emblem but I did really enjoy the Advance Wars game that came out on the DS in its early days. I never liked strategy games prior to that but I remember something about Advance Wars just made it accessible to me, and I like that it had a solid single player campaign too. Playing strategy games against people who enjoy playing strategy games isn't fun for me. Anyway Wargroove seems like it's perfect for me

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 26th)

GhostGarrity

Finally getting into Tales of Vesperia! It holds up surprisingly well and I never thought I would say this but I super appreciate the old school fixed camera angles in ToV because using the right thumb stick on the Switch is a chore.

I tried Diablo again because of the seasonal thing but it just isn't a game for me. Maybe if I was playing with friends and a headset it would be fun but maybe that's for the best, I have too many games to play as it is.

Re: Capcom Has No Plans "At This Time" To Release The Resident Evil 2 Remake On Switch

GhostGarrity

I wasn't sure if they were going to release RE 1 HD Remastered but glad to hear they are! I haven't had a chance to play it and what I actually think is a huge benefit to the Switch is the lack of camera control in RE 1. I am completely incapable of using that right stick in any meaningful way. Reaching down occasionally to flick it in Zelda or Diablo I can manage but Doom or Darksouls were both nearly unplayable to me, someone who has spent many hundreds of hours playing Destiny and Demons/Dark Souls. Anyway, fixed camera RE 1 feels like a natural fit for the Switch.

RE 2 looks like it would be a ton of work to port, I bet they're insanely optimized for each console and it's not just a matter of cutting the frame rate and resolution.

Re: Nintendo Is Not Considering A Switch Successor Or Price Cut At This Time, Says President

GhostGarrity

I got a Switch because all my friends got one and none of them would shut up about how much fun it was. I know this is ancediotal but not a single one of us plays tabletop or console mode. It's also way too big and fragile to take out of the house, unless you have a backpack or something, and the battery only last like two and a half hours anyway.

For us the beauty of it is that we don't have to take the TV away from anyone else to play a game and it's a frictionless transition between playing and not playing. You can play for 45 minutes and then hit sleep and throw it on the charger at a moments notice, knowing it'll be right where you left off when you're ready to play again.

I know that for a lot of people the Switch's console mode and detachable Joycons have some utility but I think there is a sizable market for people who see them as more of another weird Nintendo compromise we put up with for the games and would welcome a simplified, handheld only iteration. Especially if it was smaller, cheaper and had a better battery.
