Re: Head Teachers in the UK Issue Warning to Parents on 18-Rated Games Being Played by Children

Farmboy74

I think the Nantwich Education Partnership could have tackled this differently.

About two years ago, the primary school my children go to sent a letter home to all parents warning about the effects of under age children witnessing / playing COD & GTA as these games were being acted out in the playground. The letter ended reminding parents of their responsibilities and no threats were issued at all.

Now as parent who has been gaming since the spectrum 48k!, I have grown up alongside the games industry and know how to set up parental controls on all devices. The Wii U & 3DS's are fully locked out and have age limits in place. The only thing that is missing is a timer that monitors gameplay and switches the game off automatically like the Kindle Fire.

There a number of 18 rated games in my collection but these are played when the kids are in bed and my kids know that 18 rated games are for daddy only.

The problem comes when parents don't censor what their children are playing and watching and don't research how to put parental controls in place. I know Game has a policy of not selling games to under age children as I have seen this put into practice on a number of occasions.

To be honest what we're discussing here is the same when the whole "video nasty" debate blew up in the 80's

Re: Poll: Where Do You Stand On DeNA, Smart Device Games, Nintendo 'Membership' And The Nintendo NX?

Farmboy74

I think what we are going to see is basically a tablet with a controller dock, pretty much like the forthcoming Gamevice for the Ipad Air & Mini as it is widly known that the home and portable divisions have been merged.
I think now project NX is out in the open, Star Fox, Zelda, Xenoblade & Yoshi will be the Wii U's last hurrah.
It could also have an impact on the N3DS, as who will buy one of these if we are going to see new hardware in 2016/ 17?
But with this new approach a new account system will be needed and I wonder if digital titles from the 3DS and Wii U will crossover.

Re: I'll Take Zelda And Mario Over Sharing Call Of Duty With Sony And Microsoft, Says Reggie Fils-Aime

Farmboy74

Nintendo needs to realise that they need some third party AAA titles to flesh out the WII U library more. I would say missing this year's installment of FIFA 15 is a massive blow as that game is constantly at the top of the charts.

I get the idea of the gamepad and needing to be different from PS4 & Xbox 1, but at the same time it's looking like that the WII U specs needed to be closer to the competion, this might have made development costs a lot cheaper for developers.

At this point in time I would argue that the Wii U has the better game library than my PS4 but I think once third party devopment kicks in and Sony's own studios start turning out games and don't think this will be the case.

Re: Review: Bayonetta 2 (Wii U)

Farmboy74

This game has done the business with the demo (I enjoyed it more than the W101 demo) and also done the business with it's reviews.

I have this on preorder can't wait, but Bayonetta 2 does deserve to sell and sell well. Whether the majority of Nintendo fans will buy into this franchise remains to be seen.

Re: Stats Suggest That UK Kids Are More Likely To Game On A Tablet Than A Nintendo 3DS

Farmboy74

@unrandomsam, I have to agree that the MFI controllers are now starting to look the business especially the game vice for the iPad mini. Maybe something the Wii U gamepad should have been like?

£7 for the Lego Star Wars saga is not a bad price for the DS it's £9 and Wii £14.

Don't get me wrong there are some Gems on IOS but I left that market sometime ago due to the flood of mediocre games rife with IAP at every turn. A one of IAP purchase I'm not against it's the pay to win model that makes my blood boil. With a standardised controller scheme Apple could become a big player if they wanted.

Re: Stats Suggest That UK Kids Are More Likely To Game On A Tablet Than A Nintendo 3DS

Farmboy74

The games that are made for touch interface are quite good, but the Android / IOS market is now flooded with freemium games. The only true way I feel you can play traditional games like Mario, Sonic, Call of Duty, Assassins Creed etc is with traditional controllers as Sonic on a touch screen does not feel the same.

@Kereke12, I have started all three of my kids on Nintendo hardware, they have all played on my Gameboy Advance Sp, the DS, Wii & Wii U. My youngest (6yrs) has his own 2DS. I even brought him Angry Birds for it in a sale (£15), he can't get enough of it. The only thing I would say about the DS family is I cannot see how I can set a time limit for gameplay like you can on a tablet.

@dinosauryoshi, as far as my apprentices are concerned I'm a gaming fossil for sticking with Nintendo and not being seduced by smartphones & Xbox!!

But I am watching and training the next generation of Nintendo gamers from a far!!

Re: Stats Suggest That UK Kids Are More Likely To Game On A Tablet Than A Nintendo 3DS

Farmboy74

I can believe these figures as most apps/games on smartphones and tablets are free to purchase. The plumbing apprentices I teach all have games on their smartphones.
Personally in my house we have dedicated handhelds 2DS, 3DS XL & Vita for gaming as the majority of games on these systems you pay up front for the game and are not pestered for in app purchases.
But in my mind smartphones and tablets have made a big dent in the handheld market. Nintendo are rumoured to be looking at a handheld/ console hybrid with the rumoured fusion console and I believe Sony will not make another handheld after they have all but abandoned the Vita

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Discusses Future Cross-Platform Development as an "Opportunity" for Nintendo

Farmboy74

I think this comment leads more to the existence of the rumoured Nintendo fusion at some point in the future.

Cross buy and a unified OS would work very well as it does with Apple's IOS and Googles Android operating systems. Cross buy works well on PSN as well but not to the extent it does on the mobile platforms.

Does this also finally mean that at some point in the future digital purchases we make will be tied to our Nintendo Network accounts and not to the hardware we own?

Re: Nintendo Needs To Cut Wii U Cost To Capitalise On Mario Kart 8 Success, Says Ubisoft CEO

Farmboy74

Here is my take on this matter and what I said on CVG website at 6.00am this morning

Ubisoft are looking for ways not to support the Wii U, Watchdogs may turn out to be a fine game but it's launching six months after all the other versions. Anyone that owns another console may have already picked it up, cue low sales Ubisoft moaning cuts support for Wii U.

Releasing gimped versions of Splinter Cell & AC4 haven't help I.e. no online multiplayer and DLC compared to other consoles, again screwing sales for Wii U.

E3 started to see Nintendo get it's sh?t together after a very shaky start with the Wii U, and by the end of this year will have a very decent gaming library in comparison games I wanted on PS4 have been delayed but the internet hasn't gone into meltdown like it did with the Wii U in the early days.

Re: Capcom Could Be Up For Sale After Shareholders Reject Anti-Takeover Plan

Farmboy74

I think the best approach is to buy the IPS that have been used on Nintendo hardware (MegaMan, Viewtiful Joe, Phoenix Wright, Resident Evil, Monster Hunter etc)
I think it would be a bad move on Nintendo's part if Monster Hunter & Phoenix Wright did move to another platform. With less third party support for the Wii U a few new IPS in Nintendo's pocket would help sell future Nintendo hardware.
Or how about Nintendo securing the rights to Capcoms CPS 1,2 & 3 catalogue that would help out virtual console.

Re: Feature: A Cross-Platform Look At E3 2014

Farmboy74

I can only comment on Ninetndo's E3 presentation as it was the only one I watched. The reason for this was Sony's presentation was a traditional conference that was held at 2am BST and I have no interest in MS anymore. Nintendo's second E3 direct was more polished than last years and because it was a 45min video I could watch this on you tube when I got home from work (5pm finish) and to be honest I have no love for the traditional E3 presentation.
The treehouse format worked very well, but by day three I think they were struggling a bit as they had covered all the upcoming game content.
I can eventually see Sony & MS adopting this approach as from reading various websites it seems Nintendo approach to E3 went down very well.

Games that have interested me for the rest of this year and looking to buy are:

Nintendo
Bayonetta 1 & 2
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
Hyrule Warriors or Smash Bros

Sony
The Last Of Us
Infamous Second Son
Plant Vs Zombies: Garden Warfare

Next year though promises to be a good but expensive year as there will be Zelda, Yoshi, Xenoblade Chronicles X (I don't expect it to be released this year), The Order 1866, Witcher 3, Starwars Battlefront and Dragon Age.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think of Nintendo's E3?

Farmboy74

After last years E3, I was worried about how this was going to turn out and listening to Iwata saying please understand.

Looking back on the past three days of E3 I felt that Nintendo have made huge move forwards. The E3 direct video was very good and it showed Nintendo were not afraid to poke fun at themselves.

The treehouse format also worked very well but by last night I thought they had ran out of stuff to show and talk about, might have been better over two days.

The most important thing though is they turned up with games and in turn carried on with the momentum that MK8 has started. Sure everyone knew about Smash Bross and that Zelda would be announced, but Captain Toad, Bayonetta 1 bundled with Bayonetta 2, Splatoon, Star Fox caught me off gaurd and gave me renewed hope for the Wii U.
Another look at Xenoblade Chronicles, Yoshi both looking like very good games. Mario maker looks good but will need community help to thrive.

The only downer for me is that accounts tied to hardware did not get scrapped. The easy solution would be to use your club Nintendo Account.

Who won E3? It was us the gamers and the people who brought the Wii U @ launch and had to bare witness to what happened in the first year and half. My library of Wii U games is going to only get bigger and bigger.

Re: Poll: Your Favourite Showing from Nintendo During E3 Day One

Farmboy74

TBH day one of this years E3 for Nintendo has been exceptionally better than last years. I voted for Bayonetta 1 & 2 but liked the look of nearly everything if I had a top 5 it would be:
Bayonetta
Zelda
Yoshi Wooly World
Xenoblade Chronicles
Captain Toad

Hopefully now the Wii U sales will pick up

Re: E3 2014: Ubisoft Admits to Holding Back Completed Wii U Game Until Sales Improve

Farmboy74

I can understand not selling enough games due to a low install base of the Wii U. But AC4 and Splinter Cell did not ship with the full package compared to other systems. Will Watchdogs have all the add ons? Only time will tell. Maybe if the Wii U launched with SM3DW and Mario Kart 8, plus Pikmin 3, W101, MHU & Windwaker HD the install base might be a lot higher now.

To be honest I'm not expecting huge third party support anymore for the Wii U. If Nintendo can keep up the high quality games it makes, then I will be happy. It's now the same situation as it was with the Wii if you want to play all the big multiplat releases you will need either a PC, PS4 or Xbox 1
