Surprised Yoshi doesnt do as well as Kirby. I think Yoshi has definitely overtaken Kirby as the better game.
This is the last week of Media Create sales data. RIP.
Yoshi's Crafted World had an okay debut, though things could have been better TBH. Yoshi's New Island and Poochy + Yoshi's Woolly World on 3DS both opened to higher numbers despite reviewing worse.
Not the best idea to put it between two Mario 2D games. Anyway, it was never meant to sold more than Kirby, not a chance
@JaxonH
Kirby is pretty big in Japan - last year's Star Allies sold ~200,000 copies at launch.
The last time a Yoshi game debuted to those kind of numbers was Yoshi's Island on the DS back in 2007.
@JaxonH I love Yoshi’s Island (SNES)... and I was really looking forward to this... the graphics are obviously good, but this just feels far less ‘yoshi’ to me.... the controls and design just seem gimmicky.... the crafted world seems very kiddy, and this coming from someone who loves the drawing style ... or even the wooly world. So i’m not that surprised that Kirby is doing well in comparison. Don’t get me wrong... it’s actually a great game... just ‘to me’, isn’t what a Yoshi game should be.
Are those numbers low for yoshi? I really don’t know. Game looks beautiful though and I look forward to picking it up. Need a easy going relaxing game.
It is a good game. Perhaps the best Yoshi game ever made.
@nintendolie I don't doubt it's a good game, just like Wooly World is but Yoshi's Island is one of the finest games ever made. The look, the level design, the soundtrack, the challenge. As 2D Platformers go, it doesn't get any better in my opinion. Only Super Mario World comes close.
Well deserved! It's a good game, full of charm!
The only thing shocking about this list is Winning Post 9 in 5th place. How?! It's like a horse racing management game, which hardly seems like something that would be a huge seller.
@TheFox It's a long running series in Japan. I believe horse racing is quite popular there too.
It’s ahead of from software title I’m impressed
Good for Yoshie, but are those numbers high for it?
And I can’t believe that Smash already beat Splatoon in Japan (world wide it did it in couple of weeks) but in Japan splatoon is just huge!
And next week Smash will hit 3 million physical copies in Japan and that’s amazing!
And yet another week of 50,000 units for the switch, good on Nintendo!
First place is obviously good, but those numbers are significantly low. Tropical Freeze, which was a rerelease, broke 80k on its first week.
That Yoshi figure is verrryyy low...
@OorWullie I literally just got back from Tokyo for the first time ever a few hours ago and can agree. They do love horse racing. I should have picked the game up but it didn't come with English subtitles also.... It's a horse racing management game.
@JaxonH Have you played the new Yoshi game yet? I'm only about 4 or 5 levels in and I'm really enjoying it, but I can imagine people who consider themselves to be "real gamers" would describe this as a "walking simulator". I am expecting it to pick up the pace after I get the first of the 5 gemstones, but it's not a platforming game so far.
And if you haven't played it yet you are going to be very disappointed when you get to the first minecart level. Don't go in expecting DKTF on that one. Maybe later on. And the giant punching robot level was super lame, moreso than anything in Kirby. How do you mess up a giant punching robot?
Can Good-Feel make another Wario Land game?
Wario Land: The Shake Dimension didn't sell very well, but Nintendo kept hiring them to make Kirby and Yoshi games.
@victordamazio
HAL Laboratory makes the Kirby games. Good Feel only worked on Kirby's Epic Yarn, which was a spin-off.
Japan still seems to go nuts about Yoshi and Kirby it seems...
I only played a few levels so far. So far I like it, but yeah its terribly easy.
Ouch. Even broken ANTHEM and relevantly new Western IP The Division 2 did better than this.
Way on the easy side - Maybe it will have legs.
Wow while every platforms is falling from last weeks number, the 3DS and PS Vita are rising. If the rumor of Nintendo making two new Switch models are any indication I guess the Japanese already prepare for that cause now some will just wait for those instead. You did this to yourself Nintendo, you couldn't keep the rumor slience now your Switch numbers are dropping.
@westman98 I know that, but my point stands
@OorWullie I never really liked baby mario idea
67 Xbox Ones total sold? Wow
Looking forward to picking Yoshi up, maybe in May. Still want to get Wolf 2 though, wish it would go on sale!
Looks like Smash will cross the 3m mark next week...and to all those people who wondered why they re-released NSMBU - it makes them money. DMC and the Division 2 are dropping quickly, western looking games just don’t have legs over there.
It's crazy that Smash Bros Ultimate will pass the 3 million mark within the next week if sales stay at the current rate.,(Which I'm sure they will.) Making it the first Nintendo Switch title to do so. Fantastic game and the sales are well deserved.
Taking off the nostalgia goggles and comparing both games side by side, Yoshi's Crafted World is objectively not worse than Yoshi's Island.
Yes, it's true pretty much every Yoshi game is worse than Yoshi's Island, but Yoshi's Woolly World and Yoshi's Crafted World are the two exceptions. I think they're better, and ultimately the best Yoshi games. Now if only Donkey Kong Country would get sequels this great!
63 people playing sea of thieves in Japan this week 😄
I read this and screamed with joy at a pitch so high that only cats and dogs could hear me.
Yes Yoshi. YES you big green wotsit. #bonkers
@Tantani
Which I find odd. Both games have less than stellar network performance. Do Japanese gamers like laggy peer to peer games that have less functionality than online pc games from 20 years ago?
Or are they playing lan/couch mostly?
I wonder if that's why Nintendos online offerings are so far behind. Their home audience doesn't rely on it like we do in the West perhaps.
@hoopderscotch
The original Wii U version of Yoshi's Woolly World sold 39,000 at launch. The 3DS port actually performed better.
@Itzdmo I never played or check splatoon functionality, but Smash is first and foremost a LAN party game
You invite friends and play, I agree that the online should be much better (or at least free) but it is a party game and it doing it great
Just finished Crafted World today and it's a pretty good game, so I'm not too surprised to see it's doing well. I'm planning to go back and try and get all the stuff I missed.
I am always down for a good Yoshi game. I am glad the IP is still going strong like Kirby.
@hoopderscotch
Seems like I was looking at Famitsu numbers, which puts Poochy & Yoshi's Woolly World 3DS debut at ~52,000. Surprised there was such a discrepancy between the launch sales of the game on both trackers.
