Re: Nintendo Reinstates Pikmin 3 On The Wii U eShop Ahead Of The Switch Release

Darknyht

@wazlon As you can tell from my icon I think the Wii U was one of the best consoles Nintendo put together, but it will always live under a dark shadow caused by poor marketing and timing. I am glad that more people will get to experience the great games that Wii U had, but I do wish that more people had experienced them on the original console.

Re: Nintendo Reinstates Pikmin 3 On The Wii U eShop Ahead Of The Switch Release

Darknyht

@wazlon I only upgraded to a Switch last year, and my Wii U still sees regular use by my kids. While I already own Pikmin 3, I have looked at picking up some other games that run $20 on the eShop there. They don't care that it isn't a current gen gaming console, or that even the newest games don't come out on it. I imagine I am not the only person that is in a similar situation.

I tend to have the opposite problem you are describing to be honest. I sometimes struggle to find games to purchase on the Switch because I own (or have played) a lot of the Nintendo (and third party) releases on Wii U (or other consoles) already, and they have yet to justify another $60 with the additions they have put on the re-releases.

Re: Review: Super Mario All-Stars - All That Glitters Isn't Necessarily Gold

Darknyht

The originals are great as they are what I grew up with, and I still can play SMB3 on NES. However, I prefer the updated look and feel of the rest of them on the All-Stars edition. The ability to save is worth it, and I long ago lost muscle memory and reflexes that let me play SMB (or even Lost Levels) with an ability that the change will be that noticeable.

So while it is not a 9 or 10 now. It is probably still an 8. A bug that the majority of players will never notice is not enough to give this a 7 as it is not a detriment to anyone but speed runners and hardcore players of SMB/SMB: Lost Levels. You cannot discount the value of 4 amazing games in a single cart, even on a service where Carts don't have the same relevance it once did.

Re: Rocket League Will Drop Switch Online Requirement When It Goes Free-To-Play

Darknyht

I liked Rocket League when I played it at a family member’s house, and I thought about buying it numerous times. The Epic stepped in and bought the development team, so unfortunately I refuse to purchase now. Epic/Tencent represents everything that makes my skin crawl about EA. They are arrogant and manipulative, weaponizing gamers to further their personal agenda to become an even larger player in gaming. They want to be the Apple of gaming and if they succeed they will be just as abusive in their monopoly as every other monopoly (including Apple).

Re: Feature: Nintendo Fans, This Video Game Database Needs Your Help

Darknyht

I think this is only a good thing if the parents know where to find it. Common Sense Media can be helpful also, although they can be spotty on what they cover. In the end of the day engaged parents are the best thing for judging these matters as kids develop differently and there is no one size fits all solution.

Re: Reminder: You Can Now Download The Free Lite Version Of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition

Darknyht

@RCGamer I completed this single-player back on the GameCube. It isn't a bad experience per se, but it is a different experience. You get a moogle to carry the cup and your magical firepower takes a hit because you cannot combine spells with others to get more powerful versions (I think Mog could be painted to cast a specific offensive spell so you could get the second level).

The few times I managed to get enough people (and devices) together to try multi-player, it was a study in frustration as devices would not quite work right and people enjoyed causing chaos just as much (if not more than) as working together.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Final Fantasy Game On Nintendo Consoles?

Darknyht

@Wargoose Yes I played it on PS2 when it released. A short summary would be “J-Pop magical girl team saves the world via costume changes”. It had the job system, but everything else about the game just makes me cringe now.

FFX wasn’t bad but it also was largely a very long corridor from start to finish. It was also the game when I started to see how much FInal Fantasy’s plot centered depended bad “melodrama”. Don’t get me wrong, that runs deep all the way back to the second game. It is just it wore thin by X.

I think that is why V might edge out VI. The game doesn’t have enough room for all the over melodrama that Square loves to pile into their more story centered entries.

Re: Poll: What's The Best Final Fantasy Game On Nintendo Consoles?

Darknyht

It's a true toss up between V and IV for the best one on Nintendo consoles. FFV for the job system perfected and the replayability of it and FFVI for just being a master piece of multiple protagonist story telling (while maintain multiple ways to play).

After that point, they just started watering down the mechanics to the point that the game basically started playing itself while you wandered down corridors...

Re: Rumour: New Switch Model Launching Early 2021 Alongside A Strong Game Lineup, According To Reports

Darknyht

This doesn't make sense on multiple fronts, as Nintendo long ago ceased chasing the tech arms race because they realized back in the Wii era they couldn't compete that way. So putting 4K into a switch makes about as much sense as Xbox XYZ having the ability to read Playstation discs.

I could see them instead focusing on reaching the 1080p60f mark, but not 4K (at least not true "4K").

Re: How Well Do You Know Metroid?

Darknyht

9/12 - Forgot to count the GBA games in my head, don't remember the Nintendo Power comics that well, and mixed up Dark Samus with Dark Suit (which is fine since I never played Metroid Prime 2, even though I own the trilogy.)

Re: Random: Epic Goes To War With Apple, Asks Players To "Join The Fight" And "Free Fortnite"

Darknyht

While I dislike Spotify but they have a legitimate argument that Apple unfairly competes with Apple Music. Microsoft has a legitimate argument that Apple shouldn't prevent xCloud since it is essentially a remote control (they allow a FireTV Remote App, which can make purchases via your Fire Stick for example).

Epic however is just trying to use those two legitimate complaints as smoke cover for their whining that they don't like the contract they agreed to. You don't get on Nintendo, Sony, or Microsoft consoles without paying a fee to them; so why is it so foreign that Apple gets a cut of their marketplace (which again, is an across the board industry standard).

Then there is the issue of "People who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones" for Epic. At this point, I think I would purchase a game from EA before I would purchase something from Epic.

Re: Nintendo Download: 13th August (North America)

Darknyht

Well to correct my earlier post it was a ZX game created and copyrighted in 2002 by Malcolm Tyrrell. He has released the code under the GPL, and someone else ported it to the SNES where I found and played it. So I am not sure what the legality is of the version being sold on the Switch eShop. Hopefully, it is him selling it (or getting a part of the proceeds).

Re: Video: The Switch Is A Wii U Port Machine, And That's A Good Thing

Darknyht

I am a little frustrated by this, as I owned (and enjoyed) the Wii U. There is nothing there worth forking out another $60 for it again, as the version I have works perfectly. So I am choosing to instead think how many more will get to enjoy those wonderful games that are being given a second chance.

I can likewise get frustrated that they are not catering to me after I supported them in their darkest hours. But I am going to choose to look back at how I started gaming where I got a new game every 4-6 months if I was lucky, and remember how blessed I already am in that I have games I have purchased and not even started (including ones on the Wii U). In the end it's about perspective, and I think I occasionally need to step back and get it in times like these.

Re: How Well Do You Know Luigi?

Darknyht

10/12 as I mixed up my Mario TV Show actors and never owned a 3DS. Even as far back as the first Super Mario Bros., I remember playing two players and intentionally killing Mario off so I could play as Luigi. I just always related to him better being tall and lanky as a kid.

Re: The State Of The Switch eShop Is "Heartbreaking" Says No More Robots Boss

Darknyht

I have mixed feelings on the eShop in general. I love that anyone can publish and there is no gatekeeper, but at the same time deep down I want a gatekeeper.

One of the things I appreciated about Xbox 360's arcade storefront was that they curated it to a few releases a week and there was a fixed pricing structure to those releases. It at least gave each game a dedicated window (1 week) to be "featured" and find an audience (required demos also helped in this regard). This would reduce the cruft clogging the storefront because for every "Untitled Goose Game" there are a thousand knock-offs with fancy art that are just there to suck in money from unsuspecting people.

Heck even adding in a place to show Metacritic scores would help, as you would instantly know to be wary if a game couldn't even get the minimum of required reviews to have a Metacritic rating.

Re: Nintendo Download: 30th July (North America)

Darknyht

I'll be downloading the free Animal Crossing update. I just started reorganizing my island for an attempt at a Five Star Rating. Maybe I will use the dream feature to get some inspiration for junk to put out all over the island to assist in it.

Otherwise, I still need to finish Ys VIII and some other stuff.

Re: Talking Point: Is Nintendo Making As Many Games As It Used To?

Darknyht

The Wii U era saw months where Nintendo anchored the month with eShop titles or worse an event like Earthbound on Virtual Console before just giving up the ghost and going months at a time without releases due to focusing on 3DS releases, and then eventually just ignoring the Wii U for the 3DS/Switch development. This was made to feel worse due to the lack of third party releases to fill in gap, to the point that indie eShop releases became major events for the console.

The Switch has managed a release roughly every 6 weeks up until this year, and even now is seeing regular third party releases. So yeah, Nintendo's output might be down but there is plenty of others picking up the slack as they most likely are starting development of the replacement for the Switch.

Re: Gallery: A Closer Look At Animal Crossing: New Horizons' Second Summer Update

Darknyht

@rjejr I believe in Animal Crossing sunset has always ended at 7 pm, same as sunrise ends at 7 am. The game really doesn't really deal with the fact sunrise/sunset varies depending on the day of the year.

It makes sense especially when you consider kids, and it makes it easy on people that don't want to be up all night to collect shooting star wishes.

Re: Nintendo Reveals Average Age And Salary Of Its Employees (As Of March 2020)

Darknyht

It's good to see that there are still companies that have leadership with morals. Part of the issue in the US is that executive pay has grown by leaps and bounds while the average worker has had stagnant wages for years. A report in 2019 found that CEO compensation grew 940% since 1978 while typical worker compensation only increased 12% during the same time. Meanwhile, the productivity expected from employees has increased as companies reduce staff.

I have hope that other countries will eventually address this, but here we have the best government that corporations (and the .1%) desire.

Re: Phil Spencer Shuts Down Idea Of Xbox Game Pass Coming To Other Platforms

Darknyht

@rockodoodle I like the idea and hate it at the same time. Game Pass (and all subscription services) is something that you spend a lot of money on and have nothing to show at the end. Plus, the longer you spend into the service, the most invested you are and the harder it is to walk away. The same thing happens with Game Consoles and digital purchases, it is painful to walk away from hundreds of dollars of digital product when you switch to another console.

Nintendo Switch Online is cheap enough that I don't care as much, but I've felt that pain twice now (Wii -> 360, 360 -> Wii U) and it is a painful process. Especially with the Wii one since I lost everything due to Nintendo's horrible policies.

Re: Phil Spencer Shuts Down Idea Of Xbox Game Pass Coming To Other Platforms

Darknyht

It was a nice idea, but not getting it doesn't make me lose sleep either. Paradox of Choice is a real thing and I have a feeling that we will be dealing with it with gaming subscription services as much as it can happen with Netflix. I would rather Nintendo address the issue with their own eShop and perhaps offering something similar to cover their own huge back catalog that is currently missing.

Re: Gamer Girl Developer Removes Trailer And Marketing Materials Following Online Backlash

Darknyht

They are free to publish or not. People are free to purchase, boycott, or not. The issue is when one tries to enforce their will upon others limiting their free choice.

As for social media, I am pretty sure people have been jerks to one another since cave paintings were invented. It is just the barriers to participation have been reduced to almost nil. Eventually we might learn that you don’t change strangers minds by shouting your opinion louder and more aggressively. But then as a political cartoon recently suggested the American anthem might be better as the song that goes “Don’t know much about history....”

The ones I am most familiar with, either by playing or by Games Done Quick events:

Sneak King, Pocket Bike Racer, Big Bumpin' on 360 (Burger King)
PepsiMan on PS1
Chex Quest on PC
Doritos Crash Course 1 & 2, Harms Way, and Dash of Destruction on 360
Darkened Skye (Skittles) on Gamecube
World Gone Sour (Sour Patch Kids) on 360
Kool-Aid Man (Intellivision)
