Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Collection Launches On Switch Spring 2023

Darknyht

@daveMcFlave I have perfectly working copies of Final Fantasy 6 on SNES, SNES Classic, PS1 and I believe they have been sold on multiple other consoles for the past 20+ years for full price. Usually they tack on something to be “extra” to justify the price like FMV or a monster encyclopedia.

FF6 done in the style of FF4 DS might be worth the asking price but not a glorified mobile port with font issues.

Re: Soapbox: Xenoblade Chronicles X's Influence Is Bigger Than You Think

Darknyht

Xenoblade Chonicles X was my favorite so far and the ending just kills me knowing that X2 is not coming anytime soon. However, I played the majority of the game on the gamepad so single screen play isn’t impossible. I cannot do that now because my eyes are too old, but my first trip through Mira was done mostly on the gamepad while the family watched something.

The story was interesting but you had to do side quests to really understand it. But nothing beat sneaking into forbidden territories early to place markets. I still remember swimming the continent looking for sneaky ways past overpowered monsters just to place markers.

Re: Soapbox: After 10 Years I Finally Got A Wii U, Here’s What I Thought

Darknyht

Over the past few weeks, I have been watching the story of Sega particularly the death of the Master System and Dreamcast. Much like Nintendo and the Wii U they had little third party support, but unlike Nintendo they actually threw a lot at the two doomed consoles. I love my Wii U but it did feel like halfway through it's life, Nintendo gave up on it almost completely.

Like others, I enjoyed going back and replaying Wii games I missed on the cheap, but that wasn't a path forward for it.

Re: Poll: What Was The Best Wii U Launch Game?

Darknyht

The Wii U is still chugging in the house here, with over 150 games on it. Mass Effect could have been the winner had EA not been EA. Had they just included the trilogy edition released on other consoles. NintendoLand and Batman: Arkham City got the most hours of the launch titles for me.

Re: Poll: Is The Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack Good Enough Value Yet?

Darknyht

Honestly the expansion pack is not really worth it. For me the N64 games are nearly unplayable due to the inability to remap the controls, and it isn't worth fighting to purchase a special controller to play them. The library adds are mostly things that do not appeal nor are they at a rate worth the cost. The DLC is nice if you are purchasing every Nintendo release, but Animal Crossing is the only one I have been able to use (and it really wasn't that great).

Re: Switch Online's N64 Update Is Live (Version 2.7.0), Here's What's Included

Darknyht

@Ensemen I participate, but it is still rent seeking. The only ones that seem to be even more evil with this model is book publishers and how they treat libraries.

I try to see it mostly as a value add to other services I am purchasing, but I am done repurchasing Super Mario Bros for the umpteenth time. This is the one thing that Microsoft seems to be getting right, in that once you purchase it they want it to be available to play on every console you own after that (if you care to install it).

Re: Switch Online's N64 Update Is Live (Version 2.7.0), Here's What's Included

Darknyht

@Ensemen welcome to software as a service where you don’t own anything. Your access only exists as long as they offer the service and pay the fees. It’s a okay deal (becoming less so as everyone jacks up fees) for the most part unless you are a collector or believe in things like ownership and first sale doctrine.

I doubt they will offer unplugged access. Hackers may break the check, but Nintendo will expect you to continue the sub on the next console.

Re: Talking Point: What Did You Think Of The Latest Nintendo Direct?

Darknyht

Nothing grabbed me but there were only a few things I wanted to see. Retro Game Challenge Collection would have been awesome, but that most likely is not going to appear. I am a bit disappointed they didn’t announce Urban Champion x Ring Fit Adventure. Would have paid good money to see them announce Metroid: Federation Force HD just to watch the wails online. But it was a giant commercial in the end, and didn’t even tell me that knowing was half the battle at the end.

Re: Random: Switch eShop 'Team Picks' Logo Looks Awfully Familiar

Darknyht

I wish they would bring back Player's Choice, as it incorporated discounts on not just first-party but all games that sold a certain volume and was on the market for a while (I think it was a year). I am pretty sure third parties pulled away from the program and Nintendo realized that the public would happily continue to pay $60 for Mario Kart and Super Mario Bros. into eternity.

Re: Rumour: It's Not Even September And Nintendo Direct Rumours Have Already Started

Darknyht

I have the real deal here, the September Direct will feature:

1. Super Ultra Urban Champion Plus Alpha
2. Devil's Third: Definitive Edition
3. Animal Crossing: Amiibo Island Adventure
4. F-Zero: Silver Neelsen's Repair Shop Simulator
5. Metroid: Federation Force HD
6. Star Fox Adventures HD

I think that gives everyone exactly what they wish for: a new F-Zero, a new Metroid, and a new Star Fox. Plus who doesn't want more Urban Champion, the Nintendo's best fighting game of all time.

Re: Soapbox: Yes, You Really Should Do All Of Xenoblade Chronicles 3's Sidequests

Darknyht

The side quests very much remind me of Xenoblade Chronicles X and the joy I found in the stories there. While they are not necessary to the main story, they do bring life into the world and it’s people.

As for the combat, it is overwhelming at times but the tutorials did a fairly good job if you go into the menus and use them. It feels like a mix of Xenoblade Chronicle’s X and 2 with all the customization. There are still three roles (attacker, defender, support) but the classes being a lot of variety to how you accomplish it. I struggled at first because I treated the classes of the roles identically. Each has a style of play to them. However there is one that you can get in Chapter 5 that is just insanely fun and has sent me searching through the land to make it better.

Overall they have done a great job with everything. It is a slow start for the story to make sense, but I have enjoyed it.

Re: Minecraft Outsells Zelda And Mario To Be The Third Best-Selling Switch Game In The UK

Darknyht

I tired the 360 version when it released and hated it, but was talked into getting the switch Bedrock version. I was surprised how much it hooked me as I played through the “story” with a friend to defeat the End Dragon and the Wither. Initially the adventure of exploring was what initially hooked me as I packed my gear, got into a boat and just wandered the world. Then it was building things (mostly like Lego sets from others designs) and then riffing off them. Now it is trying to automate resource generation (again by imitating to learn). The challenge being doing these things in survival and snagging all the achievements legit.

The nice thing is that I set the agenda or the goals and I take however long I feel like to do it. For a $30 investment I feel like I’ve gotten my money out of it.

Re: Feature: There's No Storytelling Like Minecraft's Exquisite Emergent Narrative

Darknyht

I have a realms server with a map wall in spawn town that documents our 3x5 level 4 map search for a nether fortress and the many outposts with names like Jaren’s Outpost, Shadow Island, And Spawn Base.

Then there are the places like the side of a cliff where a stopping point became a temporary home after dying in the middle of no where (with no compass or map). It led to a treasure map and my first buried treasure.

I am glad someone finally talked me into playing, as it is always easy to find something to do or create.

Re: Rumour: Ubisoft Being Eyed Up For A Potential Takeover

Darknyht

A book I recently read make an interesting analogy between modern corporations and the gods of old. That while man doesn't worship gods, we do tend to worship corporations and their CEO leaders as saviors of humanity. Someone already has thrown out the big ones: Apple, Microsoft, Amazon, Google. Then there are the lesser ones like Sony, Nintendo, Nike, and others.

It made me stop and wonder, why is it that we so willingly put blind faith in corporations to protect and provide for us when it is extremely easy to demonstrate how they harm individuals and society?

I don't want to see another "titan" fall or cheer a bunch of rich people getting richer while reducing choice. Hopefully Ubisoft can stay independent-ish, as too many good companies have already vanished (and their IPs gone idle) because of this stuff.

Re: Feature: Hot Zelda: Link To The Past Takes From '90s Game Mags, 30 Years Later

Darknyht

It's always interesting to look back like this, but there is aspects of it that is just lost if you didn't live during that time. By today's standards the story was minimal (if at all), but we came from the two games before where the story was in the manual and a short intro text. Even the RPGs on consoles at that time were simplistic with text and even some of the ones on PC included a manual where you were told to go look up entry ## to read the information you were just told.

To quote someone from Reddit, try to explain this is somewhat akin to you today trying to explain to someone from the 1920's that you have all the information of the world in your pocket on your mobile phone and you use it to watch cat videos and argue with strangers over trivial matters.

Re: Random: Here's Why Nintendo Doesn’t Want You Using The Word "Nintendo" To Describe Video Games

Darknyht

@LinkSword copyright and trademark are two different things. Escalator was an example I learned in school of losing a trademark. Kleenex (facial tissue) and Coke (or pop as it was where I grew up) definitely battle hard to keep theirs alive.

I don’t blame Nintendo for fighting back, but PlayStation and XBox have also been used in a similar way over time. Gameboy would probably be another one that was abused when I was a kid.
