Today sees the arrival of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition on the Nintendo Switch. As part of this, Square Enix has released a special Lite version of the game that is listed on the eShop as a free demo.
This Lite version allows you to play through a "substantial chunk of the start of the game" and see and hear the various enhancements - including improved voiceovers, visual improvements and an updated soundtrack.
It doesn't end there, though. The Lite version also allows up to four players (using this version) to play through the first three dungeons together (obviously you'll need an active Nintendo Switch Online subscription). It also supports cross-play with PlayStation 4 and smartphone users.
If you happen to know someone who owns a full copy game and you've got the Lite version installed, you'll be able to join them as they journey through 13 massive dungeons. If you want to continue to play additional dungeons offline, you'll need to upgrade to the complete game yourself. Keep in mind - saves carry across.
Will you be trying out this free Lite version of Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles Remastered Edition? Tell us below.

I may give it a shot, just because I can. Maybe it'll convince me to buy it.
Neither. I'd play if it was a good singleplayer experience, but it seems it's not the case
This is one game in the series I know very little about , so I may give this a try
thanks for the reminder
No! I won't do it! I will not give them the satisfaction of knowing I downloaded the demo! I simply refuse to do so!
But it's free.
No, bad Daniel36. Go play World of Tanks or something. Don't do it!
Square needs to know that they botched it when they decided not to include couch co-op or even local multiplay.
@RCGamer - It's not a very good single player experience. The whole game NEEDS to be played with a minimum of 3 players, very much preferably in the same room. It's like playing a game of Monopoly alone. It just doesn't work. I suppose the rules allow it, but it's not how the game is intended to be played and isn't much fun.
@lemonjellydude - Unfortunately, in its current state of not allowing couch co-op, you're not missing out on much. And I say this with a heavy heart because this game, the original, is very special to me.
I wasnt a big fan of the original so i might pas.
Will try the lite version. But think will delete it after a few minutes.
@Daniel36 yeah, I know... That's why it's not my kind of game. I prefer solo experience. I may give a shot in the future if it's allowed couch co-op, unfortunately it's not the case
@RCGamer Yeah I generally prefer solo experiences too. I loathe MMORPGs in general, but simple action RPGs are perfect for me and my kids. I loved playing Moon Hunters with them, we had tons of fun with Castle Crashers, and this game already had a special place in my heart as one of the few multiplayer games I loved.
If this game had been solo with 3 computer controlled allies, I would've bought it. I would've been sad for the lack of couch co-op but at least it would have a better vibe than pure solo.
I wouldn’t touch that trash heap even if you paid me. Let it burn to ash.
@DoktorTotenKopf I want it to burn but only long enough for Square Enix to take note of the flames and put it out with a couch co-op patch.
@lemonjellydude To warn you the gameplay is not like any other Final Fantasy game, its just using the name and the characters as a selling point
@Bunkerneath Agreed. It was only ever just a bone Square threw Nintendo on the GameCube as they were desperate to get Final Fantasy back on their consoles at the time. This game is only good for nostalgia purposes... new players will likely be disappointed.
Were it not for the region locking, I'm sure this would be a million seller. But it's Square-Enix, and they have to do SOMETHING to screw with their games' chances...
I might give this demo a shot, I've never played the game before. I doubt I'll get the real thing since I doubt my friends could care less and playing something like this alone does souns sub-optimal.
@MagnaRoader In the interest of fairness, even though I will still not buy it for lack of couch co-op,
THE GAME IS NOT REGION LOCKED
Or, at least not in your friend list. So if you have a buddy overseas, if you add him or her to your friend list, you can play together. Region Lock is only applied to random matchmaking.
Still couch region locked though, so no buy for me. And you can't really play together anyways since the story only progresses for the host. Blehh.
@MagnaRoader The region lock only only applies to the matchmaking system. You can still play with each other through the invite/friend system.
@Daniel36 I wasnt aware that we could still play with others with friend codes. That kind of makes it ok I guess, but being region locked despite being on the same couch is bizarre and weird. And the original game was ALL about being next to each other on the couch thanks to having GBAs as controllers. So yeah, I won't be supporting this game for the time being either.
@Shade_Koopa but what about couch co-op? We don't even get that from the original and we are forced to splurge for 4 copies of the game when all you needed in the original was 1 copy and 4 gbas. Here they could have let us have 1 copy and 3 mobiles/consoles.
@MagnaRoader You can still just get the main game for one and let others player via the lite version. Long as the host buys the game, you can still play the rest.
Still rather dumb how Square Enix desigb the multiple. My only grip is that you can't see the overworld events with your onw little party.
Least the game is $30 bucks and not a full $60
@Daniel36 Good luck, I don't see them patching the game just for the sake of Couch Co-op. Granted, seeing how the game plays, the coding seems to be. Just a matter of IF they want to do it.
@Shade_Koopa wait I thought the lite versions can only play 13 dungeons with the owner of the full copy? Has this changed?
@MagnaRoader sorry, your right. ALMOST the full game.
@Shade_Koopa
They announced there's added extra post-game dungeons in the remaster, so those would be missing too.
@Shade_Koopa Well, I would agree if I was the only one ticked off about the decision to forego couch co-op, but I am far from.
This game mostly appeals to people who experienced the original with 2 or 3 friends, and out of those people, a large percentage was planning on reliving that with their spouse and/or kids.
I am sure there will be plenty of newcomers taking an interest in the game, but they basically left the biggest fans in the cold with this decision.
Not only that, multiplayer isn't even that great, since you can't actually play the story together, just the dungeons. So they basically ditched on player niche for another player niche, ergo this game will most likely tank.
@MagnaRoader - I think you misunderstood my couch region remark. It was a silly joke meaning we can't play this game couch co-op, together on one Switch with controllers.
Cant wait to play this with friends. Already bought the full game. Gonna make a solo save for when they aint around though
I played this game in 2011 on gamecube by myself and stopped playing halfway, the thing I liked the most was the music
Needs NSO, so technically it isn't free. Warframe, Fortnite and Warface are free to download and play however.
@RCGamer If this is what I played on Gamecube then you are not right. It is a fantastic single player experience (and the music is one of the best).
OFFTOPIC: I don't know how internet works but why Google automatic spelling correction doesn't work when you write comments here?
The original GameCube version sells on eBay for $30, save your money, buy the original and be able to enjoy playing side-by-side with a friend...
Going to download it b/c I am super curious to see how it plays on the Switch in handheld mode and the PS4 on my 52" 108-p TV at the same time. Too bad it's not on Wii or PS3, both of those are on different tvs.
Will report back.
Here's me reporting back - Yes, I didn't believe it but it is true, you can play with the free trial Lite version online with a Switch and a PS4. After doing 1 dungeon w/ my son sitting next to me on the couch we replayed the same dungeon as the only options are replay same dungeon or disband the group. I'm going to go delete it now.
I haven't played this before, so I might as well try it out. I wish more games had demos.
After seeing the awful reviews, I’ll pass on this game indefinitely
@RCGamer I completed this single-player back on the GameCube. It isn't a bad experience per se, but it is a different experience. You get a moogle to carry the cup and your magical firepower takes a hit because you cannot combine spells with others to get more powerful versions (I think Mog could be painted to cast a specific offensive spell so you could get the second level).
The few times I managed to get enough people (and devices) together to try multi-player, it was a study in frustration as devices would not quite work right and people enjoyed causing chaos just as much (if not more than) as working together.
@Daniel36 We'll just have to wait and see. True, old fans of the series are mix and will probably wait it out to see if anything changes. Wouldn't hold my breath though. We'll see how the game handles in a week or so.
I'll wait for a sale or something since I have plenty of game to keep me busy anyway. But I don't expect any "local co-op" or "cutscene with other players" patch happening anytime soon.
@RCGamer it’s actually a pretty good game and worth a look at $29.99.
As a single player game this one is definitely terrible, but I do think there's something there with the multiplayer mode.
Local co-op wont work which is why it wasn't included now or a couple of decades ago. The way its designed you're constantly going in and out of menus equipping your 4 hot key items. It was be almost unplayable if multiple people kept bringing up the menu on the tv.
However, the fact you can get the lite version of this game for free on smart device, gives you a way of doing couch co-op if you don't have multiple Switches. The lite version is limited to 13 dungeons though, but by that point your friends will know if they wanna pay to actually finish it.
I think the main think they need to patch is skippable cutscenes, and progress for all.
Personally, if I was gonna play this game with friends, I'd opt for the original gamecube and GBA's setup. Not massively more expensive than owning multiple copies of the game on different devices.
@rjejr
Nice humble brag about the tv! Mine's 55", ergo I win!
Hope you and yours are safe and well.
@k8sMum I can't brag about that tv it's about 10 years old, it's an ancient relic, not even 4k and no HDR. But it is better than the 8" Switch screen for this old man's eyes. 😎
I keep seeing you online playing ACNH, here's my Dream code, this should be my 2nd one after the island overhaul, I think the code stays the same. I bought a family NO membership awhile back.

@rjejr
Yeah, I was a 95% handheld gamer but the eyes love the TV display now.
Wow! You have a LOT of stuff!!! Very cool island! Mine is almost minimalist in comparison, heheh. I've only done a little terra forming. I tend to be house proud in AC games.
Dream addy is DA-3238-0526-8917.
@k8sMum Thank you. Considering the stuff we see online I really consider my island to be Gilligan's Island, I don't like hard ground and I despise fences. I have been cutting done a bunch of trees and flowers though to make room for other stuff so there version you saw was a bit nicer than a couple of weeks ago. I do like the terraforming. My angled bridge was the hardest thing I did and it's nice but my 2 tier waterfall where there was only a lake before is my crowning achievement. It's why I can't leave my overcrowded peninsula of land, I like the view to much.
I spent some time in the beginning working in my house but they just give you so much stuff and the rooms are so small for everything we get I gave up. Am thinking about moving my bathroom stuff to my basement or my 2nd floor but I also really don't kinda care anymore.
Thanks for the code, you'll be my first, and possibly last, Dream visit. Now where's that pen and stick it notepad.
@rjejr
I only keep/display what I like. I don't have a logical reason to have Godzilla on my island so he's not there. My island is sparsely decorated compared to many I've seen.
But I think the point of the game is the individuality to make your world the way you want. I may get into more terra forming down the road.
I really, really wish we could have more than 1 island. It would give the chance to create completely different scenarios that would get players out of their comfort zone. Daddy Ninty didnt see it that way, unfortunately.
I spent a good part of today cleaning out the damn lilies. Those things multiply like freaking rabbits!
@k8sMum My island is pretty much 1 big flower garden. I only started digging them all up and selling them to the rat bros b/c none of the fruit would fall out of my trees when I shook them.
Godzilla was my first purchase and highlight of my island. I had him fighting the 2 moth and butterfly collectibles for awhile but then I moved him to move Nook's Cranny and I forgot to put them back together.
I still haven't tried out the Dream island, I actually went to a real person's island yesterday for about an hour, my first trip, it was actually pretty cool. I gave them a million bells, well 990k actually, and a couple of fossils he didn't have, he gave me cherries and apples which after 415 hours and 160 days I still didn't have. I'm nto really a social person but I could see the appeal for people who are, opens up the game a bit as well.
Though really I'm kinda burned out on the whole thing. Even w/ new month September starting tomorrow there doesn't seem to be much to look forward too, I'm nearly done with fish and bugs. I'm guessing Nintendo does autumn in October and September is just a forgotten month.
@rjejr
I'm not exactly a social butterfly myself. i've only visited like 4 islands. The people were great but I get anxious after a bit. The communication system is so slow and ridiculous. Typical nintendo.
The nice thing about the dream visit is you don't really interact with anyone, just tour the island.
I'm pretty sure there will be autumnal changes in September, at least transitional. I would be tempted start a new island if i didn't have to beg for the non-native fruits/flowers. I don't care for being forced to do it. I tend to enjoy the journey more than the destination, I guess. I'm not a completionist in AC, as I said I get what I like and don't bother with what I don't.
But I play AC for a different purpose than anyone I know.
It only let me play through the first two dungeons btw.
@k8sMum September update, caught new fish and bugs this morning, and shaking things out of the trees, so Nintendo didn't forget. Nintendo Life may have forgotten, no mention of it, but the game devs remembered, there's even a short 1 minute trailer.
No my mistake, article just went up. Going to post the trailer there since it looks like they didn't.

I tried the demo , not my cup of tea really
