Nintendo has rolled out its first Switch system update for the month of September. This bumps the firmware up to version 10.2.0 and also happens to be the first update the Switch has received since 13th July.
Just like the previous one, it improves the overall stability of the system to further enhance the user experience. Here are the full patch notes, courtesy of Nintendo's official support page:
Ver. 10.2.0 (Released September 14, 2020)
General system stability improvements to enhance the user's experience.
Your Switch should automatically download this update while it's connected to the internet, otherwise, you can manually update it from the System Settings menu.
Have you installed version 10.2.0 yet? Noticed anything else? Tell us below.

Drifts although stable
In before complaints about no new themes or folders.
That's funny. I haven't been able to detect any improvement to my user experience.
Sure, give us more stability but allow the Joycons to drift.
More HomeBrew blocking and Anti-Modding blocks...oh and btw Stability is a plus here.
STABILITY INTENSIFIES!!!
I love the smell of stability in the morning.
NO THEMES OR FOLDERS OMG OMG OMG OMG
jk it's okay we got stability
What a time to be alive!!
If my Switch were any more strong and stable it would decide it no longer wanted to be part of my bedroom
General stability... I really don't see how they can't just give us one example. It's probably just a bunch of tickets from devs about how their game interacts with the OS but still.
@DeathByLasagna @Mountain_Man
No but seriously though they're reasonable requests.
The Switch has a long way to go to catch up to 3DS in terms of chaos stopping stability.
It still doesn't feel stable enough. Perhaps they will continue to address this issue in future updates.
@Mountain_Man The feature people keep asking for but would never use.
I'm want nintendo to SWITCH over to no drift joy-cons.
This OS is more stable than me.
2020 has been crazy but at least we can still count on Nintendo’s commitment to stability
@Northwind Reminds me of "STRONG AND STABLE" Torry leadership under Theresa May.
Sounds so siiick!
(🤪)
If the switch's os can become as stable as the 3ds one day... I'd be a happy man
@tobsesta99 I, at least, would use folders extensively. It's hard to find a specific game when you have anywhere near the amount of games I have, and I'd love to midigate that issue.
@ERIC_MACK and that system had theme support and the eShop also had music I hear.
The horses need to sleep somewhere though.
@Mountain_Man I bet if themes are introduced, you'll have to pay and people are gonna flip, or if they're free, they're either basic vector art to promote a recent game or advertisement for a product. In other words, more reasons to flip.
But I would totally use folders, as I do for my 3DS, PS4, and phone.
What's the point showing an article of information of the update when people get the news on the console itself. The updates they been doing are repeated, so kinda a waste to read.
@Yanina This mate me laugh a lot. I don't know why. It got me giggling.
@N8tiveT3ch words cannot express how much I miss the Wii Shop music
The stability jokes flow freely here.
They always have.
Many years have I sat at the banks and watched at news of an update, gazing upon the old faithful stream of comments. One day, the river of stability puns and "stability intensifies" jokes will carry me to my final resting place, and I will not be ashamed when I cross over... Because the stability news has generated a perpetual flow of cringe that will carry me.
If nintendo is too lazy to make more themes then just give us the option to set a screen capture from a game as a theme and everyone can just make their own
Are we talking more positive dynamic stability or neutral static stability?
@tobsesta99 seems kinda trolling to say that. You know people would use folders to separate by genre...
I don't care about themes at all I just want to feel like a genre and have all my games to pick from.
@Grahamthecracker and the download screen
@Mr_Persona
The reason for this article is the comment section. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a wobbly table that I need to fix with my Switch.
everyone shut up
the switch's stability was improved
@N8tiveT3ch https://youtu.be/ZBJqnZy4qks
Thank goodness for more stability, fire a second I thought I'd have to prop the switch up with an old book. 😄
How great would it be if the key feature of Switch Pro was themes and folders? No hardware changes.
Was playing Xenoblade Chronicles 2 half an hour ago, already played 200hr+, never had any error, and this time the game suddenly crashed for the first time, went to system setting, found out 10.2.0's out. "Stability" LOL.
My 8bitdo SN30+ stopped pairing after the update. Yay...
Dear Nintendo,
To be using a SoC hardware that is +7 years old, is it that unstable that every single update we get requires "stability?" If it does, then level with me, for I enjoy buying your product, but now grow concerned about the level of instability as it relates to my user experience.
Customer since the 80's,
John Q. Customer
How dare Nintendo only release a stability update! We should all demand our money back from this update!
All 0 dollars, euros, pounds, pesos, yen or whatever else!
The switch is so stable NASA's getting jealous.
..........Remember when updates were exciting?
Notice it arrived just before 3d all stars releases? I bet this is the secret unlock for galaxy 2!!
@Joeynator3000 Pepperidge Farms remembers.
Wow 10.2 already ! Bought myself a gaming laptop a few months ago... Never turned my Switch on since then. And from what I see here, there is no reason to change that 😂
@MrAsild dont enjoy mario or zelda games?
I don't understand you guys. Dark theme is best theme anyway. And just how long do you stare at your home screen? I usually just fire up my games and that's it.
@Moonlessky Nintendo probably thinks that people spend more time playing games than looking at the home screen.
Noticed nothing. But it is hopeful to see Nintendo is making some progress to make the eShop better, although they have a long way to go. And this is off topic, but what happened to that Nintendo Dream game reveal? Don't remember when the date is.
"Noticed anything else?"
No bad stability joke in the subheading?
I call BS. My Switch isn't any more difficult to push over after the update than it was before.
For the love of *****, would it kill Nintendo to actually do something with these ***** updates? Just a simple change of the home screen background color would be fine.
There are a lot of creative and intelligent people at Nintendo its a shame seemingly none of them are allowed to put those virtues to good use for the Switch itself.
@EnergemKeeper Also, would it kill game journalists to try to get more information about updates?
@MrAsild Are their still "gaming laptops"? Haha.. XD
Bought a Nvidia Shield TV (2019). I also got Nvidia GforceNow for my Galaxy Tab. I havn't turned on my gaming laptop since.
I do use my Switch though.
So stable you can now install a herd of horses
@Mountain_Man I mean, honestly though... How hard is it to give us a basic UI improvement like folders after three and a half years? The 3DS had fully-fledged custom layout controls from day one, if I'm not mistaken.
and now everythings stable
except the joy cons
Its just an update to protect new nintendo software.
Nothing to see here... move along please.
My Switch is so stable now that Art of Balance just automatically goes to the end game credits when I start it.
For the most part I’ve stopped buying lots of Switch games. I own hundreds and hundreds of the damn things. I noticed myself slowing down on the whole “buy virtually every game unless it’s made by a Gamergater”. Problem was this resulted in lots of purchases. It’s not a problem for me as early on I bought a 1tb microsd. But once that started to get full I decided to buy but not download games unless I really wanted to play them.
But. In recent times of the last 12mo I’ve noticed I don’t even do that. All those little purchases have stopped. Why? I can’t find what I want to play! It’s impossible!
What would be nice is a Kindle style system where you tag games and can then view them.
For example if I’ve plugged my switch into one of my faux-arcade cabinets then I just want fight stick or arcade style games viewable. If I’m in portable mode I want to view FPS games that have Gyro controls. That style of thing.
Folders are blasé. You can only add a game to a folder once. It doesn’t allow for the best organisational experience.
Soooo I loaded up my banking app and clicked Nintendo to see how much I had spent circa March 2020. Gosh. Could have bought a new car for that. But I already have a couple... A jeep for day to day and a, get this, imported Japanese sportscar from the mid 90’s that was meant to look like a 1950’s car. When I got it there was a petrol receipt from some rando Japanese petrol station. I really love that. It’s kinda rare. Not too expensive, you can get a good condition one for £8k it’s just finding them at all nowadays. I waited a year to get mine back in 2016. Only problem is it’s automatic! Car people probably know what it is
@XO-Frats (uncontrollable chuckling)😂😂😂😂😂
@moonspeak you ARE mistaken. Folders came out in 2016. The 3DS came out in 2011? I remember rather precisely because I was on the train down to London for the day. I had a final check up after laser eye surgery a year earlier on Harley St. I’d taken some drugs prior to getting on the train. I wanted a fun day out after all lol. One of them kicked in on the train. I loaded my New 3DS up (got one of those early ones, got two intact. One to keep one to sell as my partner didn’t care for it/didn’t want it). It said there was an update and to restart so I did. Booted back up and bam they added in folders and saved layouts.
No come to think of it yes they had folders since launch but the update added saved layouts! I spent hours on the train arranging and creating layouts. My fave being one where I rated games out of 5. After badge arcade and god I spent too much on that. I started creating scenes on my 3DS Menu. My fave then being one where I had a huge Nintendo battle over “game icons” lol. I keep meaning to post that online.
But yeah no I remember specifically as I recently came across the photos I took that day in London. And the fun times I had messing about there before the return train home. Funny how amazing memory can be at times.
@MrAsild what a kookie thing to say. “Gaming laptop” lol.
I remember being into PC games circa 2010. Horrible experience. Consoles were still in the PS3 era and not doing anything fun.
Since I got the switch I’ve never looked back. Only console that even remotely took away more time than 0 this year has been the SNES classic (hacked of course). I’ve spent tens of thousands of English pounds on games, accessories (including fun arcade cabinets i built where I can insert the Switch into. It’s ultra cool but I don’t do social media and don’t brag about it) despite just personally owning the one Switch.
Before that? I maybe bought the 10-20 biggest games for each platform and left it at that. Pc gaming? I fire up Steam every year but there’s nothing there. The best and most comfortable set up is a Switch. I finally understand how people could throw hundreds of hours at games. I wondered how they did that before. On Switch, given I can sit back and play for hours instead of being hunched over a laptop (LOL) or keyboard and mouse, I can now throw so much time into games.
Love it.
I just find it weird that you’re not bothering with awesome Nintendo developed or published games any more. Personally I could never do that. I like fun too much to give up on it. How did you decide to give up on fun and enjoyability?
it's still way to unstable .... my drif issues are not stable enough, one day it's less, one day it's MOOOAAAAAAR.
please, give me more stability quickly..... also the kickstand could use more stability - please implement that in the next update
but seriously, i haven't seen any changes or optimizations. i have not even seen new profile pics .... might have been a good way to add some mario64, sunshine and galaxy pics, but nope.
or increase the stupid 10 letters nickname lock
10.2 ! And what exactly has visibly changed since 1 ?!
Just think, all this craziness of 2020 happened just after they stopped rolling out 3DS stability updates.
Hurry up and fix the world again Nintendo, MORE STABILITY NEEDED
@doctorhino Salutes
Do you remember Wii U's main menu? It was fresh, lively and funny. I miss those days....
Haven't updated my switch yet - it never updates by itself, SUPER ANNOYING, but I can't wait for the animal crossing update!!!
@Mountain_Man,
I think it's shocking in this day and age we have no folders and themes.
@dojmin The Dark Theme could stand to be even darker, IMO
Honestly a Darker Theme's probably the one theme I'd end up using long-term
But just a few more color options would be nice!
@Mountain_Man Ironically your profile picture depicts who I imagine Nintendo is actually run by at the moment
@CoastersPaul Don't accept less than the minimum, the Switch's home menu should be an improvement over the 3DS', not on par with the DSi's
Consider this stability my gift to you. Some day, and this day may never come, I may ask you for some stability.
Yes always good?
Did this seriously require an article to be written about it.
@King-X lmao right? This site has gone downhill.
@tobsesta99 wouldn't use folders? My autism begs to differ.
More stability MOARR!!
Still no interface themes/backgrounds, no folders and please add some more profile pics to choose from as I would love a gengar or byleth one, and to top it off add some kind of achievement system maybe stars?
@NEStalgia LOL!
This stability will not stand, man.
Let's be real, this patch is there to stop you playing Mario 3D All Stars in case you got it delivered early.
It fixed the issue I had with no issues and done it well
@Crono1973 then they certainly didn't think that with the 3ds then
Didn't work. I removed my right joycon and got a system error and had to reboot. True story.
The switch is so stable than I am
It ain't version 11.0.0 yet, so it's not worth complaining about.
So lame that you feel that need to have an article on it.
Do people not know that the drift in joycons are a problem with the joycons and NOT the system?
Nintendo, there must be something wrong with my switch! My user experience has stayed the same for at least a year or two! What am I missing lol.
Amusing timing, seeing as I had to do a hard reset of my system for the first time just last night when I couldn't get the screen to turn on (seems the Switch thought it was docked when it wasn't, but the hard reset sorted it)
Ironically, this stability patch crashed the game i was playing.
@VenomousAlbino Not exactly that, just that the majority of people wouldn't use them anyways 😄
@mr_eman You think that’s bad? Mortal Kombat 11 corrupted all of my digital games. 😉
(true story)
There is also an update to LOZ BOTW. Anyone know what is in that?
This is the one I’ve been waiting for!
@tobsesta99 Wow, that's bad.
The most stable system ever built.
I don't think it's stable enough. Release 10.3.0 tonight!
If only 2020 had as many stability updates.....
Predicting that update Ver.11 will be in March with the new model
@Grahamthecracker Don't forget the Wii weather music, and basically every app and page on the Wii.
Anyone else’s games running odd? It’s like they speed up and then slow down. I’ve tried playing OW and Animal Crossing both are acting weird. Played yesterday no issues. Playing today and there’s issues X(
@Moonlessky Oh boy l have a funny picture that l would like to add as a background on my home menu! Reminds me of the DSi actually, like remember you can set a photo from gallery as a top screen profile background. It was a nice touch with the DSi.
Actually, there’s quite the funny name-ban that happened in this update.
(Nevermind, just realized that they reported on this already)
@alexybubble Really? I mean, you can't just sort all your games in alphabetical order and find the game you want? idk man it seems pretty easy to find games from the home screen to me
@Purplemage Not when I have close to 150 games on the thing.
@shazbot people would complain how big of a ripoff it is but also it would sell out everywhere
@alexybubble @Purplemage yeah, similar problem. Between my brother and I we're passing 600+ and I've got them installed on 4 different microsds.
Would be nice to folder by card, but instead I just made a spreadsheet. Would much rather Nintendo spend time on games than ui that would eat memory.
