Plants vs. Zombies: Battle for Neighborville wasn't the only EA game on show during Nintendo's latest Direct broadcast. Knockout City was also announced. It's handled by Velan Studios. If that name sounds familiar it's because this is the same team behind last year's Nintendo game, Mario Kart Live: Home Circuit.
In short, Knockout City requires you to team up and duke it out with the rival crews of Knockout City where "epic" dodgeball battles take place. The game is also cross-play with PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC. Our American-based video producer Zion Grassl had a chance to go hands-on with the game as well. Here's a look:
Knockout City launches on the Nintendo Switch on the 21st May. Does this look like your kind of game? Tell us down below.

Does it look like your kind of game?
In a word.... no.
It looks like rocket arena replacment. it could work they just need to do it right, (Talking to you EA)
If their goal was to completely put me off before even showing gameplay then mission success.
@BenAV Yeah, I was really confused by the intro. None of the characters were in the game and they don't even fit the game.
if its a free game , people may show interest like ninjala , doubt majority would pay for this
I like the concept. Makes a change from guns, anyway
@Ultrasmiles Just check the link, it‘s 20 bucks. But it has full crossplay with PS4 etc.
Love dodgeball games! Immediately signed up for the beta! Looks fun! Can't wait to actually try it out.
You gotta dodge, duck, dip, dive, dodge.
The game itself looks interesting, I would like to know more...but that trailer was just terrible! These executives don't understand what makes good trailers.
Well, I'm curious at least.
I love Dodgeball. I did not get that from the trailer. The trailer just d!@#ed around with a cartoon for like 2 minutes. Bad ad campaign. I wish they'd have said it was about dodgeball.
Honestly this may be the first time that I found the advertisment way more intriguing than the actual game footage.
All those different characters and style was pretty cool to see, so different and all, then...BAM... all the same! It's like they were hyping me for the wrong game.
They should’ve developed some more Mario Kart DLC
I think this could be a lot of fun. But we'll see about the price I guess
This game looks very dull to me.
I'll echo others' sentiments. I did not understand that trailer at all. Wha-huh? who? Why? what was with all those different characters and different styles that seemed to be drawn from different gaming genres and why were they talking about a generic looking game where all the avatars looks like wannabe Fortnite rip-offs? Was there a point to that ad? Am I supposed to believe a 2d cartoon is playing a video game? Why is a 2D cartoon playing a video game? Why does her character not visually look like her? MY HEAD IS GOING TO EXPLODE!
The trailer was super confusing with the orc and the princess and all those characters that weren’t in the game. But it looks like it could be fun.
Is the point of the trailer that characters from other games are tired of their games and specifically want to play competitive online dodgeball instead? I shouldn’t have to think this hard about a trailer for a video game. Just show the game and some jazzy music and let the gameplay speak for itself.
The trailer in the Direct was awful.
This game totally depends on gameplay, it'll review at about 7/10 and won't be worth the price tag!
But I actually do like the concept just don't expect them to get it right.
I didn't get the interview bit. It was in the style of Fortnite, and featured psuedo mascots from popular games. They knew what thet were doing when they made the trailer. Then the game looked closer to DC Heroines than any of them. It was jarring. Where did all the game characters go???
Dodgeball is fun to play. I'll concede that. So it might be good. But traditionally, dodgeball videogames have been average at best.
Definitely curious about this one. Could turn out anywhere on the scale from awesome to awful I reckon but it looked interesting.
I really liked the random selection of Seven and Seven Is by Love playing in the background. I can only assume someone in the team is a fan and pushed for it as it's not an obvious one. Certainly never turned up on any EA playlists I've heard. Great song though. Well over 50 years old now
It’s got EA attached so it’s a big NO!
the only thing the game did for me was remember its misleading trailer. now i want a game that have characters from diff game genres/styles interacting with each other
The trailer was a huge mistake, it set up this whole Wreck-It-Ralph-esque premise of video game characters breaking out of their usual roles to do something different, and did nothing with it.
It was just confusing and had nothing to do with the actual game.
Everything looks like bloody Fortnite now. I can't help seeing these kind of games with suspicion, like they're trying to rinse me of cash for costume upgrades and so on.
I guess I'll echo similar sentiments on being confused by how the trailer started versus what the game actually was (which I immediately identified as some kind of dodgeball game. That part became clear). But I'm watching the different game characters portion and thinking "Is this some kind of new Fortnite season? Why would Nintendo show this in a Direct?"
EA gave this instead of The Sims 4 ? 🤨
The trailer looks much more interesting than the game.
I wish I played multiplayer games. This looks fun but ultimately it would be a waste of buy in for me. I need either bots or local co op options.
With no local multiplayer or motion controls (as well as the expected graphical difference), it sounds like the PC version is definitely the one to get over the Switch version. The only reason to even consider the Switch version is portability, but getting to use mouse and keyboard controls over stupid dual analog is a much bigger advantage.
Yeah that trailer was a horrible way to push a new game. If you're going to go the route of using a confusing trailer to showcase your product you should ask Christopher Nolan how to do it properly. His trailers make no sense yet make you want to know what's going on. That reminds me I haven't seen "Tenet" yet
@BAN felt like a “everyone is playing this/this is the place to be/ even other genres love this game” sorta pitch to me. I think that considering that dodgeball is not a game that draws in automatic support (like say a basketball game would) it was an informed decision to showcase gameplay as well as having such a marketing hook. Might be the next ninjala, who knows.
The marketing department had obviously never seen the game and going off buzz word mockups, trailer was so bad.
Best thing was the World of Warcraft orc playing on the switch. I didn't hear what anybody else said, because I was rolling with laughter!
The trailer was terrible but I think the game looks great. I just think it should be cheap or free if they want to suck in a bunch of players.
Looks like a decent enough game but the trailer was so long and boring that it killed any potential interest I would have in trying it.
@boxyguy @rupeeclock I agree. I was like, Now I want to see THESE characters in the game. Admittedly I watched this late last night and was very confused. I'm glad I wasn't the only one.
Do we all watch the same video? This game looks like a ton of fun to me!
@Anti-Matter As someone who is playing Sims 4 on PS4, trust me Sims 4 sould not translate well to Switch. The text is too small even on a TV and the game would take forever to load on Switch.
