Monster Hunter Rise's limited-time Switch demo is now well and truly live, and while we're sure there are plenty of you out there who were already sold on the game without the need for a trial, you're probably going to want to boot it up anyway.
You see, anyone with save data from the current Monster Hunter Rise demo on their Switch system will receive a handy in-game item pack when they get stuck into the full release. If you were planning on ignoring the demo and waiting for the full game, you might want to think again – you don't have to play through the full thing, but get that cheeky save data on your console to reap the rewards.
Of course, those of you who have already been playing the demo will automatically receive these in-game items should you go ahead and buy the full game when it launches on 26th March. The demo is only live on Switch until 31st January, so make sure to download it and create that save data by then.

I have only played the demo of the 3DS Monster Hunter and even that confused me a bit, I just don't think this is the series for me
I played the demo. And I think that I am just too much of an filthy casual to really get into it.
The heat in hades is keeping me occupied. Plus dead cells dlc drops tomorrow at noon
I don't think the demo was a great representation of the game. You don't get an opportunity to learn the skills and combos of any of the weapons. There was a training room in World, and I hope to see it again in Rise. Also, the more difficult monster was a later game monster that you are fighting with beginner gear. It would make anyone feel like they are not suited for the game, especially newbies.
I have been in love with this series since Tri, and my feeling after playing the demo is they are continuing the trend from World, where they make the actual monster fighting more involved and complex, while simplifying other aspects that have always made this series unique, like capturing and actually finding the monsters. Not too keen on this development. My biggest complaint about World was the boring design of weapons and armour and they seem to have fixed that at least. Can't wait to sink hundreds of hours into this when it releases!
Never played a Monster Hunter game before, but I thought I’d give the Rise demo a quick try before – thinking I’d – delete it. But to my complete surprise, I absolutely LOVED it. Day one for me now!
It certainly takes s while to "get" Monster Hunter, how the game systems work, methodically preparing with needed items BEFORE going out on a hunt, actually USING those items (like traps) and using them successfully. Knowing how to be patient most of all and only attacking when you have clear open opportunities.
You learn all of this by studying the monsters and their behaviors and attack patterns (it's like a 3d megaman boss fight in s way). But when it clicks it becomes VERY rewarding (emotionally and litterally in-game) taking down a seemingly impossible to beat creature
Couldn't make it passed the Wyvern Riding tutorial and took a hard pass on the game
Aww fudge, gotta re download the demo.
@FroZtedFlakerZz I thought so too when I played that demo.. but for some reason, this demo has a different feel to it. Ended up loving this one and can't wait for more
@Ryu_Niiyama You don't have to if you didn't delete the save file as well
The thing to remember is that Capcom makes Monster Hunter demos for veterans to try out the new features. It's never designed or a good introduction for new players. Trust me, the tutorials in the full game will be A LOT better.
If you want to try out the demo go ahead. Just be aware that you'll have to youtube for the in-depth weapon tutorials..
OK, I kinda get the idea they are going for here, but still... if the game is better without starting with these free items, why would you get them for playing the demo? I mean, if they thought starting the game with these made it better, they would obviously give them to every player. Ah, well...
As a series veteran i really liked the demo, really excited for the game and i can see it being my most played Switch game this year.
@Radbot42 There is a training room in the trailer with moving targets and stuff. It's part of the village hub
Love the demo, just coming up to 30hrs of game play!
Think the bow is OP now tho especially with the heal arc shot thing.
Love the bugs and toads but not sure if people will use the Palico online.
Not looking forward to the idea of people auto, changing amour/weapons mid battle, eating buff mid battle and the auto craft.
Tho it’s good to see the auto craft can be turned off.
I DLed the demo but have yet to try it; most of my gaming time is swallowed by BotW these days lol. I'll be sure to give it a spin before the deadline next weekend.
Actually...is the whole demo disabled as of the 31st, or just the online?
@Tyranexx
Yes it seems that way, full demo will be defunct from 31/01
The demo seemed more suited to show off existing fans what the new game will offer. I was pumped after the first quest with all the enhancements. Seeing I pre-ordered after playing a couple of quests, freebie gear sounds great!
I am gonna pass switch version and buy pc version . Thank you leakers.
Not a fan of the series but this game is going to do VERY well. It seem like they made the best possible game they could have given the hardware. A lot of love and detail went into the making of this game and it shows. Congrats to those that are into the series. This is a must buy.
I was pretty disappointed with the demo. It's been years since I've played a Monster Hunter game, but I played the heck out of my old PS2 copy and Monster Hunter Freedom 2.
I get that the demos are aimed more at hardcore players, and I'm all for shorter tutorials in a time where every game tutorial drones on and on, but to throw new and returning players in with nothing at all just seems unnecessary.
I played across a few classes for an hour or so before giving up when I couldn't work out how to eat. How embarrassing.
Eh not the best thing ever but it's nice to start with some bonus stuff. Would rather have layered armor or some cosmetics but this is nice too.
First mh demo I liked.
Might as well boot up the demo then.
@Radbot42 Yeah, I felt like what little training there was in the demo wasn't enough/was too obtuse to actually teach the newbies, while also being too simple to teach the experienced players. It needs an actual training mode that walks you through the moves. (Bith for newbies and people like me who mostly missed World/IB)
@Radbot42 That is good to know. Thanks a lot! Yeah the later Monster really made me feel stupid and if I did not understand a fundamental mechanic of the game or something.
@Lord I was afraid of that. I'll be sure to fit in at least a couple MonHun sessions this week!
The demo is my first monster hunter exposure, but I wasn't feeling it. There are a lot of popular games that I don't get into. So, don't put a lot of weight on my opinion.
As far as freebies go, that's actually unimpressive considering how easy most of those items are to craft, but glad they're doing something.
Being a heavy MH veteran and my main game is still MHGU I definitely put my time in the demo (love it and day 1 purchase!). A lot more so the first 5-6 days of release but since then I've barely touched it. As much fun as it is I'm constantly reminded that's all it is. A demo. A bare bones tiny fraction of a game with just enough meat to get a taste. Any time put into it goes towards nothing. I mainly practiced the wire bug mechanic and I can honestly say now I think I can give Spider-Man a run for his money. Maybe the last day or so of the demo's availability I'll get a little more practice in then just wait for the main game to REALLY get lost all over again in a MH game. So long, backlog!
Cool to know you get something. I've been practicing taking down all 3 Intermediate monsters with all weapons of my choice. Keeps me busy
If anyone wants to learn some of the basics, I'm willing to teach and hunt while we still have the demo for a few days. Should be fun to get a few hunts going.
@Yanina Don't give up, skeleton! I got into MHW on Ps4 a little after release and can say the time you out into is worth it just because of how satisfying it feels like hit a big dinosaur on the face and knock it on its butt. I hope Nergigante eventually comes to Rise because that is one fun, visceral fight.
@Qwertyninty this game is going to win Asia, not to mention Japan where the Switch rules absolutely.
I only tried Freedom Unite a long time ago and didn't get into it. But Rise demo is pretty good. So now, in preparation of the full release, I started playing Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate. And I love it. The thing is, you need patience with this kind of game. No need to rush. That's when you start enjoying it.
@arsmolinarc for sure. It’s going to get close to 20 million units sold in my opinion. Easily.
Tried the demo for literally 5 minutes then deleted it. To each their own but I seriously don't get the appeal.
I was always going to buy it anyway, but the demo really sealed the deal.
@Strumpan My first thought playing the demo was that the sample armor and weapons shown here was better than the entirety of sets from world/iceborne. I really enjoyed world/iceborne but I gotta admit, the design variety of weapons, armor and monsters was probably the lowest in series history.
@invictus4000 Read my post above...😉
@Chowdaire Yes, well, I started out liking World, especially for the nice graphics and seemless areas, but after a while I realised I wasn't having fun and that it was actually boring, at least compared to 3U, 4U and GU. I understand they made the changes to attract a wider audience, and they obviously succeeded, but I really hope Rise will be good. Iceborne made several steps in the right direction, and Rise is probably primarily aimed at a Japanese audience, so I'm cautiously optimistic.
@Yanina it's probably one of the few big games you can play casually. Each hunt has a 50min timer though hunts can be alot shorter than that depending on how you choose to play. If you play less than five hunts a week and only play key Village quests you'll easily finish the main game in about a month or so (allowing time to get full sets/mixed set... Maybe two months?) Everything else is 100% optional content, always has been and not something your forced into doing. It's more fun with friends though and you'll probably find alot of hunters playing multiplayer and occasionally poking at the story. It's an easy game to sink many hours into and kinda like animal crossing you don't need to dedicate all your time into one continuous play though unless you really want to.
The community is also one of the best around, you'll always find people who are willing to play with newbies and help you out.
Also... You can pause it... The best thing the portable versions ever have as an option!
@FroZtedFlakerZz the demo is unfortunately never aimed at new players, which does it a great disservice. However in the full game there will be training modes (looks like an entire training room in the trailers) so it will probably be the most friendly to new hunters the series has ever been. Even if you get stuck the community is amazing, they make tutorials, tips and tricks videos and of course online you meet some of the nicest players (you do get morons some times like every game but it's actually kinda rare with MH being a co-operative experience). Glad to see people giving it a good go though! I'm a third fleeter (played since Tri) and you'll find many players in the community who are like yourself, tried it and put it down, tried again later and eventually it clicked. Think of it more like a dance between you and the monster instead of a typical hack and slash, you might find it more fun.
@Strumpan the free items are typical of their DLC hunter help packs that they usually give out. They're useful to get people started, but not to the point they're giving you everything you need to complete the game. They're optional, but nevertheless handy.
@Tyranexx just the online
@JokerCK doubtful there will be a pc version of Rise, however the console team would have started on a new game the moment Iceborne dropped so another game isn't that faraway. Rise was in development the moment GU was completed and had a 3ds build long before the switch was released (as GU in Japan was originally on the 3ds, making Rise the first official portable title of fifth Gen) so it's been in development for the past four years. There's usually both console & portable in each generation so next console version will be RE engine as well, but sixth gen. Hopefully it's not too long await, but four years is pretty typical.
@JellyPop the full release will have a training arena and there's such a great community, if all else fails there's heaps of tutorials out there!
@FluffiestP1llow pre orders get some layered armour/ palamute & palico armour depending on your version you get. They're cosmetic, so aren't necessary if you don't have the funds for them. Pretty sure the ones tied to amibbo are the same, otherwise there'd be no point hunting the flagship.
@Chowdaire unfortunately the weapons from the new world monsters is going to be the same, it's rare they change the gear of totally new monsters. They might have to wait a full generation to get overhauled
@Meikahidenori thank you a lot
@Meikahidenori
Yeah, I realise I might have more fun with the whole relase. But I also might not. It's hard to tell with a demo like this.
My favourite demos are the ones where you think 'let's see if I like this...', then you enjoy it so much you have to buy the game immediately to play more.
This demo really plays down the charm of MH games, to the point where I have no idea if I'll enjoy it or not. I can't drop £50 on that.
@JellyPop totally understandable. I live in Australia so it's like $70 - $80 just for the standard edition. However in my case there's few games I enjoy, especially new releases as I have slowly lost interest in alot of genres over the years... But I know I'll always get my moneys worth out of a portable MH title. MH 4U and Gen kept my sanity after having each of my kids and becoming house bound most of that time (I didn't do too well after having them, they're beautiful kids but the body just falling to bits and hospital stuff but we're all ok now) and despite having BOTW and other big games that take ages to loose yourself in, I found one or two 55 min hunts every few days were enough when I needed a break was plenty to keep me going as feeling like I conquered something helped so much.
I understand the game might not be for everyone, heck you'll find many MH players who have 'couldn't get into it, eventually came back months or years later and it finally clicked' stories, some it never just was ment to be, others it took a different mind set, ect... After it's all said and done, you play what you know you're going to enjoy.
Not going to lie though, it has one of the best online communities you'll find anywhere outside of animal crossing. (and I've been in my fair share, from the sims, TF2 ect.. But the MH community beats them hands down as one of the most helpful and friendly)
Maybe I'll get to hunt with you one day in the future... Who knows? GU goes on sale quite often, wouldn't be surprised Rise will do the same.
@Yanina your welcome. ❤️
@Strumpan To clarify, while I liked world and iceborne I fall into your camp, liking 3, 4 and gen more. Strangely my second biggest complaint after the designs is the large open worlds. It's cool at first to hunt down monsters but since this is a series meant to be played for hundreds of hours the novelty quickly wore off and just took away from the actual fun of a monster hunter game, which would be fighting monsters of course.
@Meikahidenori If that's the case, I'm fine with that; I don't often play games online with others. I prefer local multiplayer for games if it's possible.
@Tyranexx it should have local wireless. I usually enjoy MH in hand-held mode on the go with friends over Cafe coffee. Best way to enjoy it sometimes!
@Meikahidenori Now that I could get behind!
This game looks terrible. Why is the entire game green and brown? I'd rather have a smaller game with more than two colors than have an immense game that's entirely puke-green.
Compare to Monster Hunter Stories, which has tons of color. I'll wait for the sequel to that instead of buying this eye sore of a game.
@TheWingedAvenger the thing is it isn't. Monster hunter stories is bright because it's a completely different style. With Rise we've only seen one map and a few of the monsters, sure Mitzune is the only colourful one atm but many many other colourful monsters have been shown off in trailers. When you are going for a semi realistic style you have to accept not everything is going to be neon, pastel and look like a cartoon. Besides, it will be muted because of where it's set - Japanese shrines always have a muted colour palate regardless of media because they're places of spirits, religious/cultural significance ect... It wouldn't make sense to paint it electric neon green and pink. May as well ask for the TF2 Pyro colour change mode in the Witcher (and while hilarious the idea is in principle, it's something that just look utterly awful... Also how rarely do you go into a mountain forest? It's full of green and brown!😅) .
@Meikahidenori
Yeah, I hope to get back into it one day. For me, that will probably mean picking up a second hand copy sometime if I can. I've also found that as I've gotten older and have more responsibilities, I have to pick a few games and stick to those, rather than finding the time to play every new release. I play a lot of Ark, so I guess that's where I get my monster hunting fix, haha.
I'm really glad you're getting so much joy out of it though, it's uplifting when people talk about how much they enjoy a game in the comments!
@Meikahidenori
Point taken, and I put the question to the Youtube channel SwitchUp, who replied that the first part of the game has the green-brown color scheme but that the look of the game changes in later phases. Still though, I'm not a fan of huge open-world games that have several hours of bland, colorless content. Skyrim and even The Witcher III are offenders. It's easy to make an enormous world when you use that trick. Breath of the Wild, Kingdoms of Amalur and Fenyx Rising did it much better.
@TheWingedAvenger MHR isn't really that much of an open world game though... More like a large map maller than the size of ocarina of time's Hyrule field. Open worlds let you explore at your own pace, something you can't fully do in MH without being penilised by the timer for. It's why the scout files mechanic in world was hit and miss because it felt like it was leading you around by the nose same way a white dotted line does in the Witcher does.
I honestly don't mind the muted colours when certain monsters pop out of the environment but I do agree that there's alot that don't making it bad for people with colour and vision issues. There's an improvement from world though that at least newer and older monsters do stick out visually from the background (mitzune in all its red rage certainly does), but unsure if the likes of Anjinath will as the colours from World were designed to be more realistic and his muted tones might be an issue. My biggest issue is in the demo so much is on screen that You have to fiddle with it to clear it up though it's also interesting looking through the options to see what features are there to make visabilty better for players. I'd love a hue or saturation slider personally, but games aren't built around that as an option just yet... They're too obsessed with grit atm. Also your examples are still heavily stylised games that aren't using a realistic art style as a base. Again, the Witcher or is probably a better example, at least in terms of the switch version being a bit brighter than other consoles (not perfect but I definitely struggle less with the switch edition on quests with it)
