One game shown during the Nintendo Direct that we don't have to wait long for is Monster Hunter Rise. It's arriving exclusively on the Switch on 26th March.
It seems Capcom still has a few surprises to share about the game. During today's broadcast, we got a look at some additional environments, Apex Monsters and the new Rampage story event - where hunters team up to defeat an onslaught of monsters attacking Kamura Village.
"The Rampage is near, and it's more dangerous than we've imagined... Apex Monsters have been sighted in mix! #MHRise Prepare for this onslaught by facing Rakna-Kadaki, Volvidon and Basarios in the Lava Caverns, and confronting Almudron and Diablos in the Sandy Plains."
As you can see in the trailer above, you'll be receiving a little bit of extra support from some familiar faces.
This brief segment was also used to remind fans that a special Nintendo Switch Monster Hunter Rise Deluxe Edition system (including a digital download code for the game) will be released on the same date. Along with this, there'll be a Switch Pro Controller - featuring striking art inspired by Magnamalo, the game's flagship monster.

Just when I thought this game couldn't get any better.
YES APEX
MH4U all over again and this is what makes monster fights more exciting
Comes out around the one year anniversary of Animal crossing. Appropriate that the 2021 GotY for Switch releases around the same time frame as the 2020 GotY.
it is so cool to see a main line sequal to the series. there are so many cool new features and monsters. looking to be one of the best games of the year.
Everyone is talking about the Rampage, new monsters, and Apex...I'm just over here being like "OMG yes, the Sandy Plains!!!" lol
God dammit, I can't wait
Apex monsters are back! New mechanics, armors, monsters, and I’m pretty sure this game will also have G Rank, I’m sure this game will be a blast,
Looks utterly fantastic! Also looks like we can hire NPCs to help soloing with the rampage sections, which is a solution to a problem I never knew I needed until now🤣
Who's looking forward to an Apex Rajang...anyone?😈
Actually, turns out Apex in this context has nothing to do with 4U. In other languages Apex is translated as superior or Alpha, meaning we're getting a leader of the pack type creature which kinda makes sense as the Rampage is essentially monsters fleeing from something extremely dangerous. Something tells me they couldn't think of a better word in English when translating...😅
So looking forward to this one👍
@Joeynator3000 yes! The love for third fleeters of Tri is shining through in this game!
reminds me of the raids in ysviii theres even a bell
Apex monsters are back, that on it's own gave me a big smile.
This trsiler looked better than my time with the demo the whole zipping about and controlling the monsters just didnt click for me.
This is looking like game of the year for me.
Dotn think it will top monster hunter world but I am definitely looking forward to this, need to get me a pro controller ASAP as playing handheld just felt awkward to me
I’m assuming you can’t have apex without Gore!
Looks good. Monster hunter tri was the last game i played, what's the difference between the normal and apex monsters? Just the damage they do or is there more?
@dutchguy If I recall correctly from mh4u they are also incredibly fast and you need to keep activating certain items during the hunt just to be able to damage them. I remember them being insanely hard. Even more mechanics on top of an already complex combat system.
I experienced some PTSD knowing that Apex monsters are back...max level Apex Rajang from MH4U was a serious way to separate the men from the boys alright. The EX monsters from MHGU come really close to Apex (F*ck you Boltreaver EX!!) but max level Apex monsters caused so much sweat on the hands I'm surprised I didn't short out my 3DS. Trying to balance the use of those wystones along with staying alive just added even more of a nightmare to the fight.
@Ganner Yeah those apex hunts were intense!! Funny, I actually just started a new game in MH4U about a week ago. Haven't gotten to the apex monsters yet. I still love that game. Rise looks amazing though. The wirebugs open up so many new possibilities. Only problem, there's a good chance it will occupy all of my gaming time for the rest of the year!
@dutchguy I'll try not to make this too long and confusing. In MH4U Apex monsters were a hell of a lot faster, pretty much always in a rage mode state, hit very very hard and weapons bounce off them most of the time. They were at the highest peak of being infected with the Frenzy virus. There was a mechanic of using "wystones" on your weapons that gave abilities like weapons bouncing a lot less, increased damage and/or taking less damage from infected monsters. What made the wystones mechanic challenging was you can only equip 2 at a time, had a limited time each to use (about a minute I think), and had a cooldown time before they can be used again (about a minute I think). You really had to be on your toes at all times between using your stones and not being killed by the monster. If you were lucky enough you could actually temporarily knock the virus out of them for really short time. Usually a very well placed hit on the head did it. When that would happen they would revert back to just a regular monster state and therefore that was the best time for everyone to go all out on it before they go back to being Frezied/Apex state. It was very challenging and I'm not even covering everything about Frenzy/Apex/Wystones etc. Let's just say the highest levels of Apex monsters (like Rajang) could easily take down even the best groups of hunters.
@teko MH4U was amazing. I got it day one along with the release of the New 3DS XL at the time and it was perfect. Yes Rise looks to be another outstanding game.
I totally understand what you mean by Rise most likely taking up majority of your future gaming. As I've gotten older I tend to have a "main" game I play and everything else comes and goes. I started with MH Tri (Wii), moved onto MH4U and now that main game is MHGU (I'm HR 999 what does that tell you LOL). MH games for me just take over so much my OCD gets a little out of control. To be honest I actually originally said MHGU would be my "swan song" of the franchise. No particular reason other than it just dominates all my gaming to the point I don't give much attention to anything else until I feel I've reached that point in the game where my OCD cools down some (which is a LONG time). I said it over and over that MHGU is my last MH game no matter what. Saw the first trailer for Rise and no joke I was sold on it about halfway through it I'm so excited and ready for it. Totally caved in like a house of cards. I'm very happy though before and especially after the Rise announcement I've put time in knocking out some of the more important games in the backlog. Once I get Rise nothing else will be touched for some time (or at least given proper attention).
I think back when I said I'm retiring from the franchise after MHGU was because the transition from MH4U to MHGU didn't feel that big of a leap for me. Even though MHGU had a lot more to it like the Hunting Styles, Hunter Arts, more monsters, locales etc. it was still based on the same engine and game play. I was a hardcore MH4U player so when I started MHGU it felt like I was starting all over from scratch and it kinda gave me a dragged feeling for awhile. I didn't fully appreciate MHGU for what it was till way later in the game unlike my experience with MH4U which was right from the beginning. What I'm really looking forward to in Rise is it being a completely different experience especially on the game play side. Everything plays and feels very differently than what I'm super adjusted to. It will be nice to be forced out of my comfort zone and start over into something completely new yet familiar.
@Kidfunkadelic83 the beauty is the wirebugs are optional to use. I'm not great with them to be honest, so I'm probably going to use them to get me out of danger more than anything else.
@dutchguy the apex system in Rise isn't the same as 4U however. In this context it means 'alpha monster' whereas in 4U they where special hunts where you needed specific equipment and they were doable...but you had to be really good at the game to do them. Rise's thankfully won't be like that.
