Re: Poll: Are You Excited About Pokémon Scarlet And Pokémon Violet?

Cheski

I am playing through Legends Arceus now and I am probably more excited about Pokemon in general than I have been in years. The promise of a traditional Pokemon game with an open world is definitely exciting. It should definitely be an improvement over the wild area in Sword/Shield. I'll definitely pick one of them up.

Re: Ubisoft: Players "Don't Get" What Makes NFTs So Beneficial

Cheski

I am just one of those play for fun saps. I only play single player or local multiplayer games at this point, so anything with an online component usually gets ignored.

I don't think I have ever bought an in game item so these don't really impact me as far as interfering with my games go, but the potential environmental impacts effect all of us.

Re: Soapbox: 2022 Is Looking Glorious For Tactics Games On Switch

Cheski

I am planning on playing all of these, but I think Mario+Rabbids is the one I am most excited for.

Despite enjoying the genre, I never did play Fire Emblem up until August 2021. Then I started Three Houses and got hooked. I’m almost finished with my third playthrough now. I want to play the 3DS games, but I am hoping something makes its way to Switch.

Re: Talking Point: Everyone Has A Bad Game They Love, So What's Yours?

Cheski

Two come to mind. Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest and Radical Rex. I got Mystic Quest for free through my local Bookmobile as a reward for reading X number of books or something when I was a kid. I loved that. Radical Rex is too hip to be extinct, or so I was told. I thought it was a fun platformer.

Re: Talking Point: Do You Replay Games?

Cheski

I definitely reread, rewatch, and replay my favorite books, TV shows, movies, and games. I run through some of my favorite games basically annually. I have reread the Harry Potter books countless times. Who knows how many times I have watched Star Wars or the Marvel movies.

I play through the Donkey Kong Country games routinely and basically any Mario or Zelda game compulsively. There are plenty of reasons why, but they are amazing games and there is something comforting about firing up a Zelda game and it just feeling right. Strong feelings of nostalgia play a part for sure. When I was a kid in the 80s and 90s, replaying games was a necessity. I would get a game or two at the Holidays and one at my birthday, so I just replayed things over and over. That mindset has stuck with me, but as a new father who works full time and is working on a master's part time, being able to jump into something familiar is more appealing than starting something new. I can start playing Super Mario Bros 3 and have a blast, but not feel the need to finish it. I have beaten it dozens of times in my life, so just having fun for a few worlds is entertaining.

With TV, that especially hits home now. When I am up in the middle of the night with my new daughter, I love hitting play on episodes of The Office or Parks and Rec and just letting them run in the background.

Re: Talking Point: What's Your Comfort Food Game?

Cheski

I can really just relax with any Mario or Zelda game. Other games include Donkey Kong Country 1+2, Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour, and basically any Mario Kart come to mind. Recently, I have replayed Shovel Knight multiple times if I am just in the mood for something short and fun. If I am looking for something a bit longer, I enjoy replaying the Mass Effect Trilogy or Witcher 3.

Re: Soapbox: There's No Shame In Playing On Easy, Even If You're A Pro

Cheski

I am in a similar boat as far as my stage in life. I've been gaming for 35+ years, I feel like I have played my fair share of difficult games. I am in my 30's, married, work a 9-5, am working on a master's degree part time, and am involved with my professional organizations. I'm lucky to get 10 hours a week for gaming.

I usually start with the default difficulty and adjust from there as necessary. Especially when looking at how much time so many of the "AAA" games take to complete anymore, I am not interested in grinding boring content simply for the sake of XP. I even take it one step further when it comes to finishing games. When I was younger, I felt compelled to see every last pixel the game had to offer, regardless if I was actually enjoying it. These days, I will happily shut a game off and move on if I am not enjoying it at least moderately. The old "make it through the first 10 hours, and it gets better!" (or with TV/books, the first season or first novel, etc.) is simply time wasted. I want those couple hours a week to count, because it is a very real possibility I will not play anything else for another week.

That's not to say I don't 100% games when I am really enjoying them, or enjoy a challenging game if I am in the mood, but it is less likely I go for those.

Re: Feature: The Big Nintendo Direct Summary - 13th February

Cheski

Super Mario Maker 2 was really the only announcement I was interested in. There were a lot of games that were heavily inspired by anime, and for someone not really interested in that, there was little else on offer. I found the Link's Awakening art style to be off putting, but I will likely pick that up because Zelda. I might give Tetris a shot.

I want to be excited for Ultimate Alliance 3, but I can't help but feel like it is a step backwards for Marvel games. It reminds me way too much of the Activision era (doesn't help that it is literally a sequel to some of those). Coming off of the excellent Spider-Man game, that is a disappointment. I'll wait and see what Square-Enix is cooking up with their Avengers games.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Maddening Stance On Retro Gaming Is Driving Me To Piracy

Cheski

My ideal approach to classic games would be an expanded NES Remix-like package. I have purchased the games I would be interested in from the NES, SNES, or N64 multiple times over at this point, and would need another hook to get me interested. I am not interested in online multiplayer, but a curated collection of games in a retail package that includes some history, maybe some dev interviews, artwork, etc. (think Rare Replay), the full games, and NES Remix style challenges would be incredibly appealing to me, at least for NES and SNES games. A handful of NES games would not cut it for me anymore.

In this case, I think Nintendo should look to stuff like the Mega Man Legacy Collection for inspiration. Modern takes on Super Mario All-Stars would be appealing as well. A collection of Zelda games across several platforms with some new interviews, maybe some stuff similar to what was included in Hyrule Historia and the other Dark Horse books would be great

Re: Soapbox: With Microsoft Playing Ball, It’s Finally Time For Banjo-Kazooie To Return To Nintendo

Cheski

I think I would prefer seeing Playtonic doing their own thing instead of working with Microsoft again. There is a reason why those guys left Rare and Microsoft in the first place. I would rather they focus on expanding the Yooka-Laylee library. I am hoping for a 2D Yooka-Laylee Country next.

If Playtonic is going to work with any major company, I would rather see them work with Nintendo to make a proper DK64 sequel. You know, with 100% less tediousness.

I love Banjo-Kazooie, but I don't want to see Playtonic have to go right back to the place they just left. Even though they would still be independent, Microsoft would still be looming overhead.

Re: Funimation Really Wants Goku To Join The Roster In Super Smash Bros

Cheski

I don't understand the infatuation with wanting this character in Smash. There are some ridiculous suggestions out there, and this one is ridiculous every time it comes up.

I've never watched Dragon Ball, or any anime for that matter, but if we are picking characters from popular shows when we were kids, I'd rather have the Ninja Turtles or He-Man lol

Re: Nintendo's Track Record With Direct Broadcasts Points to Another One Happening Very Soon

Cheski

I keep seeing this list, and I mentioned this on YouTube, but it is worth looking at the contents of those Directs in more detail, as well as the regions covered. For example, on the dates listed above:

July 18, 2012 - Brain Age: Concentration Training - Direct Mini - Japan only
July 30, 2012 - Dragon Quest X - Direct - Japan only
September 7, 2012 - Brain Age again - Direct Mini, Japan only
September 13, 2012 - Wii U games - "Big" Direct - Worldwide
October 3, 2012 - 3DS XL - Mini - Japan only
October 4, 2012 - 3DS games - "Big" Direct - Europe, Australia
November 17, 2012 - New Super Mario Bros 2 DLC - Worldwide
December 5, 2012 - Wii U and 3DS games - "Big" Direct - Worldwide
December 19, 2012 - Dragon Quest X again - Japan only
January 8, 2013 - Pokemon X and Y - Worldwide

I could keep going, but hopefully the point gets across. We may get another Direct soon, but there is no pattern here to indicate if it will be a 20 minute look at a specific game, or a rapid fire look at several games. In 2012, Nintendo did more regionally specific Directs than they currently do. The "Mini" Direct yesterday covered far more games than most of the Directs on this list. Obviously those Directs covered their games in more detail due to the focus on a specific topic, but this list does not offer anything resembling a pattern. Especially when most of the examples are 5 to 6 years old.

I'd love another Direct soon, and I would not be surprised if we get a specific game Direct, or a 3DS Direct in the next few weeks, I just don't think those dates mean anything when you look at the topics and regions covered and try to compare them to the Direct yesterday.

Re: Pokémon GO Dev Niantic Working On Harry Potter Mobile Game, New Console Titles Planned

Cheski

I think there is a lot of potential in that universe for games. I don't think it even necessarily needs to center on the school, but could focus on different eras and locations. Looking at one of WBs other series, Shadow of Mordor/War take place away and before the main events. Even Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find them is set in a different time and place. I think this would give them more creative freedom to explore the wider world.

I also was wondering if Rocksteady is working on the rumored RPG? Seems possible at least. There were rumors awhile ago that WB acquired Avalanche (Disney Infinity) to work on Harry Potter games, but I think they might go with Rocksteady for the "big" game.
