Way back in 2016, Bonus Level Entertainment put out a Kickstarter for a retro styled platformer known as Fox N Forests which was successfully funded. It's now been confirmed that the game will be coming to the Switch eShop in Spring this year.
Just in case the latest trailer above didn't make it obvious, this is a 16-bit style platformer with inspirations from classic games such as Super Ghouls ’N Ghosts and Wonder Boy In Monster World. Find out more from the press blurb:
Fox n Forests is a 2D 16-Bit style action platformer with adventure and puzzle elements! Set within a mystic forest and its surroundings, Fox n Forests is a stunning fable offering pixel perfect Retrotainment and rewarding challenges!
The game is inspired by the glorious days of 16-Bit and all time classics like Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts, Wonder Boy in Monster World and ActRaiser 2 as well as the Castlevania and Zelda series.
Your weapon is a magic melee crossbow that can not only be used for ranged and close up combat, but empowers you to seamlessly switch between 2 seasons per level, completely changing the whole environment and resulting in amazing secrets, tricky skill tests and thriving exploration! Fox n Forests will feature pixel perfect platforming, screen filling bosses, rich bonus levels, powerful potions, bags of loot, stuffed shops, clever backtracking, challenging skill tests, a magic melee crossbow to shoot and slash enemies, upgradeable shots, not 4 but 5 seasons to explore, stunning 16-Bit pixel art, a catchy chip tunes soundtrack and tons of humorous retro charm!
Our goal is to merge modern game design with our passion for 16-Bit titles. We want to create a fresh, charming and highly entertaining experience with tight gameplay, beautiful pixel art and catchy chiptunes. Easy to learn, difficult to master, impossible to not fall in love with.
Have a quick watch of the trailer above and let us know your thoughts. We think it looks pretty damn awesome, do you plan to pick it up for your Switch in Spring?

Actual animation! Looks fun!
This game looks so good!!!! I’m actually really excited!!!
I'm not sure why it caught my attention but man his shorts look teeny in that thumbnail.
"Fox n Forests is a 2D 16-Bit style action platformer with adventure and puzzle elements!"
Now having said that, it does look colourful and vibrant. Real clean presentation. I'll await some reviews but it looks promising.
Looks real nice, will keep an eye out for this.
It looks like an obscure Game Boy advance game.
Would love it if it came in a snes cart. I own more 16 bit games on my switch than the snes
The visuals are really nice. I might play this upon completion of Owlboy when it releases. I like "2-D" games but, there are sooooo many on Switch that I feel like I have to be quite choosy at this point. Fox n' Forests piques my interest though. What is it though with developers wanting the characters and enemies in their games to have only 2 frames of animation. Come on guys, smooth it out. Fluidity is key.
Imagine if Tails had his own big game, this would had been that big game. Game looks great, this will definitely be on my wishlist soon.
Looks sweet.
If its last boss is not another fox on a flat platform in space I don't know what they were doing with their dev time, but it was poorly used.
Can he do a barrel roll?
I might have to get this when it comes out.
Looks like every Furry's dream game.
No, they put out a Kickstarter Campaign... Very important distinction! Unfortunately I missed their campaign. I will buy the game via Steam depending on the reviews...
kinda remind me of Jazz Jackrabbit. (childhood game ) so if, it's anything like that. day 1 for sure!
Love the look of this. Hoping the price is right!
Is the fox male or female? That title art was real furry fuel. Check out those legs, man!
@8-Bit_Superman Oh so he’s still trying to figure things out then. That’s cool, Rick, take your time. 😉
looking forward to it looks like a day one buy. the visuals are more like 2d ps1 era than Snes, megadrive,Amiga visuals looks great.
Looks interesting. If I ever get through my backlog I'll have to take a look
day 1 for sure
Hi Everyone, this is Bonus Level, the developer of FOX n FORESTS. Thank you so much for all the great comments! We worked very hard for the last years (we started to prepare the Kickstarter campaign back in 2015) and are more than happy to see most people seem to like our approach so far Thank you for your support! Here is a secret as a little sign of our gratitude: LRDU LLRR DDUU LRDU
@KingdomHeartsFan - Will do, thank you!
Looks more like a 32X, Atari Jaguar game so 32 bit....not 16
I'm starting to feel some really heavy 2D platformer fatigue at this point. Even the best ones on the eShop aren't super compelling anymore.
This actually looks kind of nice, although a bit on the sluggish side. Still intriguing. But that opening image of the fox is not doing the character any favors, especially if it's supposed to be masculine.
Looks potentially very cool.
Never heard of it. The artwork reminds me of the Redwall Books.
The game looks pretty good.
Ooh this looks GREAT!
Looks great!! I’m in!!
Such a great game of my people.
I like pixel art that emulates the styles that were on CRTs, not pixel art made to be pixel art
Looks like a great game (although with a stupid name)
This looks pretty nice for it's concept. But it is really starting to feel like every indie game is going for the retro look. It's not special anymore.
This is the second season swapping 2D platformer with a fox as a main character in the last year. Wonder what the appeal of that concept is.
I would probably have no interest in this but I have bought everything featuring a fox in it so far (except Lucky's Tail but I don't have an Xbox One...Yet.)... Because Foxes are Life.
Looks nice. I just hope it's not AGAIN a superhard and frustrating game. As always nowerdays....
Gorgeous - reminds me of Mr.Nutz on the SNES.
@emeyece - No need to worry, we have 3 difficulty settings. The game on "normal" is a fun challenge, but we did not go for the ultra-hard route like some other games. However, unlocking every last bit is not that easy in any mode, but more because of "hidden secrets" than of difficulty.
As a fox, I approve. Looks like I will be looking into this one.
Looks very colorful, like something you would find on a gba. Not bad.
@Bonus-Level Good to hear. Nothing against a good balanced challenge. And love to hear that there'll be hidden secrets (en masse). But I don't get this whole ultra-difficulty stuff.
@emeyece - We have 3 difficulty settings and not even "hard" comes close to Super Ghouls 'n Ghosts or ActRaiser 2 on "normal" on the SNES. Yes, FOX n FORESTS is a bit edgy, on purposes, as we wanted to capture the look and feel of SNES games that did not guide the player that much - and thus finding our stuff yourself becomes even more rewarding in our view If you are into SNES, do give FnF a try, you will not be disappointed as many 9s and 8s ratings show.
@Bonus-Level Dude, you‘ve said the right words. Got me though, I‘ll buy that game!
