Re: Random: John Cena Is A NES Aficionado

ChameleonBros

It's easy to be cynical and say he was paid to promote but I think he just genuinely likes the NES. I follow him on IG and he posts NES-related pictures and memes all the time. Like one was the Last Supper but with Little Mac, Mike Tyson and the Punch-Out fighters.

Re: The Next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Spirits Event Is All About Fire Emblem

ChameleonBros

@DayOfLavos I have the game on, and for fun, I looked through my spirit inventory (I have a ton of them and can deduce which series the missing ones belong to). Highest number of Spirits by series:

Pokemon: 156, about 12.0%
Mario: 113, about 8.7%
Zelda: 92, about 7.1%
Fire Emblem: 79, about 6.1%
Kirby: 59, about 4.5%

Although not near 40%, the raw number of FE spirits is still ridiculously high.

Re: Reggie: Don't Expect Nintendo Switch Online To "Mirror" The Competition

ChameleonBros

I believe that Reggie is aware of Nintendo's ineptitude regarding online, but can't really do anything about it. He comes off differently here than he did in that interview regarding Red Dead Redemption 2. There, he was being realistic of the Switch's limitations and RDR2's development but he still recognizes that RDR2 would be a welcome addition to Switch. Here, with the comments about not "mirroring" the competition and "we do things differently".....it just feels forced, idk.

Re: Mario Tennis Aces Version 2.1.0 Update Brings New Games And Tournament Changes This Week

ChameleonBros

@nado_san What's funny is that some of those 4 inaccessible options I listed, are still technically in the game.....in the single player Adventure mode, or in the finals match of a offline tournament against computers. For example, most of the rival matches in 1P Adventure are 3 set, 2 game matches. So they are literally coded in the game, just not available for custom multiplayer matches. It's just baffling.

On the plus side, it seems like they're at least trying to address some complaints and add more content since launch, so I remain cautiously optimistic that they'll eventually patch stuff in.

Re: Mario Tennis Aces Version 2.1.0 Update Brings New Games And Tournament Changes This Week

ChameleonBros

@nado_san No, unfortunately it does not. There are only three match lengths you can choose in Free Play (regardless of standard/simple ruleset)

'Quick Play': Literally just a tiebreaker set as the entire match
'Extended Play': 1 set, 2 games per set
'Full Play': 1 set, 6 games per set

So that means the following options are NOT available:
-3 set, 2 games per set
-3 set, 6 games per set
-5 set, 2 games per set
-5 set, 6 games per set

Sorry if this was redundant, I just wanted to clarify stuff.

Re: Mario Tennis Aces Version 2.1.0 Update Brings New Games And Tournament Changes This Week

ChameleonBros

@nado_san You can play simple mode (none of the new meters/special moves, just straight tennis) in the online tournament and in free play.

Honestly though, I think the heavy focus on the online tournament structure in hindsight kinda messed some stuff up. I can't think of any other reason why something so basic and fundamental as full set/match options that were present in a 2000 N64 game (!) are somehow partially or completely absent in a 2018 Switch game. Don't get me started on the stage selection process.

It's a shame because they got some of the big things right. The gameplay itself is awesome (I play primarily simple mode), great roster, and super quick load times.

Re: Rumour: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword Is Taking To The Skies On Switch

ChameleonBros

Skyward Sword is the only 3D Zelda that I could not get into, but I'd absolutely be down for an HD remake as long as they fix some stuff. Specifically Fi's barrage of interruptions, sometimes janky motion controls, and the pacing in general.

I know it would never happen, but imagine a Zelda HD trilogy (in the vein of Metroid Prime Trilogy on Wii). Wind Waker HD, Twilight Princess HD, and (potentially) Skyward Sword HD all in the same package with some extras like a universal sound test, concept art, mini-games like Roll Goal/Fishing with additional levels/features. One can dream...

Re: FIFA 19 - The Best Soccer Game On Switch, But It's Hard Not To Feel Short-Changed

ChameleonBros

Eh, I'm really enjoying the game so far. I mainly play kickoff, online friendlies and seasons. Lack of the new MUT submodes and 'The Journey' don't really bother me but it sucks for those wanting them.

Reviewing yearly sports games is tricky. Like, I completely understand the cynicism towards yearly sports games. But for me, this is my first FIFA game on a Nintendo console since FIFA '02 on GameCube (I do have '17 on PS4). I'm not jaded because I don't buy sports games every year. I only get 1-2 versions max, of each sport in a single generation cycle.

FIFA 19 seems to be only a modest upgrade from 18 and lacks some of the new modes of the current PS4/XBOX versions, but on its own, it's still a great game. Gameplay is smooth and I haven't experienced any glitches. Portability and tapletop multiplayer are a game-changer for me. Just my two cents.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey Adds Conductor Wig And Outfit

ChameleonBros

These are fine and all, but I would love actual DLC kingdoms/moons though. I'm surprised that hasn't happened with a game as successful as Odyssey.

Maybe it's a Galaxy/Galaxy 2 situation. IIRC, Galaxy 2 was originally planned as an "expansion"/DLC for Galaxy 1 but Nintendo said they had so much content and new ideas that it evolved into a standalone sequel.

Re: Feature: 5 Times Sony Shamelessly Copied Nintendo

ChameleonBros

What a stupid article, and I did read it. I expect better from Nintendo Life. Nintendo, SEGA, Atari, and Sony have copied each other in different hardware aspects throughout the years, who cares? E.g. Wii Classic Controller Pro is a copy of the Dualshock, Playstation Move borrowed from Wii Remote, Genesis had compatibility for Atari controllers, etc. Heck, SEGA and Atari did mini consoles way before Nintendo did!

N64 is my favorite system of all time, but I'd love to try some PS1 games that I missed out on. I never owned a PS console growing up; PS4 was my first one. The $100 tag without AC Adapter is quite sketchy, but an N64 mini wouldn't be too far from that price tbh.

Re: Guide: How To Get Nintendo Switch Online For Less Than $5 Per Year

ChameleonBros

@nonprophetmusic Metroid Prime Hunters, a 2006 DS game, had voice chat enabled in the lobby for online with friends. Clubhouse Games (also a 2006 DS game) let you draw custom drawings/messages with friends online during games. It's hilarious to me that 2006 DS games somehow offered MORE communication options than 2017 first-party Switch games.

I highly doubt Nintendo doesn't have the funds to implement some type of native communication/invite system for the Switch. They are just that inept and backwards at anything online. Part of me theorizes that this is mainly on the company culture at Nintendo of Japan. I imagine some higher ups at Nintendo of America, UK, etc. are quite aware of the NSO/voice chat ineptitude but are helpless in trying to scrutinize the topic or bring any meaningful change.

Re: Wireless NES Controllers Won't Work With Other Games On Nintendo Switch

ChameleonBros

@Trajan I have original retro working retro systems as well, but I have the NES and SNES mini. I loaded up more games on each, but the HD convenience/minimalistic storage space is big for me. Except for Spiderman and occasional online game, I played the minis more than my PS4 in the past year. I thought the majority of VC games were overpriced even back then. NSO's reception would be WAY better if they had some SNES/N64/GCN games with online play at launch. People in general are tired of the NES.

If Nintendo does release an N64 mini in the future, it'd be smart to make it a hybrid. Preloaded digital N64 games with the ability to play original N64 cartridges, kinda like the SEGA Genesis HD system. An N64 mini without Goldeneye, other Rareware and great licensed games feels empty, and the hybrid nature would be a good workaround for that. Knowing Nintendo, that'd never happen though.

Re: Wireless NES Controllers Won't Work With Other Games On Nintendo Switch

ChameleonBros

The success of the NES Mini went light-speed to Nintendo's collective head. They really overvalue the NES and its games/accessories. Classic Nintendo arrogance after a highly successful console (e.g. Wii->Wii U transition, DS->3DS transition)

FWIW, I love the NES itself. My first console and I still play it to this day via the NES mini. But I completely understand that NES games are so played out and overdone at this point. People want SNES, N64, and especially GCN games, myself included.

Re: Wireless NES Controllers Won't Work With Other Games On Nintendo Switch

ChameleonBros

@electrolite77 Even Gamecube controllers still work on the Switch with the Smash Wii U adapter. It's just treated as a very basic USB controller (no rumble, no motion obviously, etc.).

If I recall, last year Nintendo reluctantly acknowledged that the Wii U adapters work on Switch. Contrast that with these NES controllers, where right off the bat they make the limitations clear.

Re: Play Nintendo Switch Online Games In Style With These Official Wireless NES Controllers

ChameleonBros

Yikes.....what a ripoff. You can literally buy an entire NES Mini console for the SAME price as this controller set ($60)! It also seems like you cannot even use these for any normal retail or eShop Switch games either. This probably rules out any compatibility/adapters for the NES mini controllers and vice versa.

I'm not ripping on the controllers themselves; the NES controller is timeless and still one of my all-time favorites. It's cool that there are official 1st party wireless ones now. But the execution & pricing of the concept are flat-out terrible imo.

Re: Mario Tennis Aces Update Hits The Court On September 19th

ChameleonBros

This was a pleasant surprise. I play a few matches each week, but I've been waiting for a more substantial content update. A decent start, and it seems like it might eventually get more characters than the datamined list suggests. Plus my main in 64+Power (Paratroopa) is finally back!

Keep it coming Camelot, lets get full match customization options and online doubles co-op next time.

Re: Nintendo Switch Online Will Start On 19th September, More Info Coming In Direct

ChameleonBros

The Nintendo online service would be better received if the free games were from multiple retro systems and not just the NES. I love the NES to this day, but it's so overdone and played out, and people in general aren't into NES games like they were in the GCN/Wii era.

If say, Kirby Super Star, Mario Party 2, or F-Zero GX were games included in that list, those would collectively be a MUCH bigger incentive than 1985 NES Soccer and Mario Bros. arcade.

Re: Nintendo Set To Bring Smash Bros. Ultimate To College Football Games Across The US

ChameleonBros

This is awesome. Smash and Mario Kart are perennial college favorites.

I wish Madden (and NHL for that matter) were on the Switch though. They'd be perfect for tabletop mode multiplayer, especially for college kids. The last sports games I got on a Nintendo console were Madden 2005 and NCAA Football 2005 on the GameCube. It sucks that EA basically has a monopoly on some sports games.

Re: Nintendo Applies For New N64 Trademark - Is Another Classic Edition On The Way?

ChameleonBros

If N64 Mini becomes reality, it’d be great if it had a slot for your own cartridges like the recent Genesis classic rereleases. That would be a great way to allow the Rare/3rd party games to be played while bypassing licensing and financial roadblocks. An N64 mini without any Rare games or the few great 3rd party games (e.g. AKI wrestling games, Star Wars) would kinda feel hollow.

I highly doubt it would happen though.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Thinks You Should Give Star Fox Zero Another Try

ChameleonBros

Miyamoto makes a solid point. It's so much better when you play a game without pre-conceived notions and you tend to appreciate it more especially if it's a good game. That especially applies to playing older games today. The problem is, video games in general are so expensive and many people have to prioritize their game purchases. This would be different if Nintendo had more of their first-party games at a budget price of $20/$40, or at least have good sales. I purchased several excellent games on other systems for $5-$10 (originally $60) thanks to special discounts.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo's Game Updates and DLC Are Fantastic, Albeit Starved of Attention

ChameleonBros

The Good: Mario Kart 8. Great content, and great value. New courses are fun, and 200 cc is amazing. Only complain is the addition of another Mario and Peach, but honestly that's a minor complaint especially since Link, Villager, and Isabelle kinda cancel that out for me.)

The Bad: Smash. The content itself is mostly good, Mii costumes are just decent. I'm glad Lucas (one of my Brawl mains) is back, and Ryu is just awesome. But the pricing is waaayy too high across the board. I spent almost half of the MSRP of Smash Wii U...on 4 DLC characters (3 of them veterans), 4 stages (3 of them exact N64 copies), and a couple Mii costumes. Compared to MK8, that seems like a rip.

The Ugly: Splatoon. The DLC might be free, but it doesn't feel like "true" DLC. It's everything that should have been in the game on launch back in late May. It's like Nintendo is trying to enhance Splatoon's replay value in a drawn out, artificial way. The content itself is mostly good, but the method of delivering it just feels...ugly.

Re: Round Table: Let's Talk About the F-Zero Franchise

ChameleonBros

There was something that really just felt off about the Gamecube F-Zero compared to its great predecessors on the Super Nintendo and N64. That being said, it's been what, a good 10 years since the last F-Zero game?

I miss when Nintendo used to have their small series (like Star Fox, F-Zero, Pilotwings, Wave Race, 1080 Snowboarding, their own MLB games) shine right alongside their big ones
