Potentially thanks to a new boost of interest in the franchise after the recent Animal Crossing Switch announcement - and with Isabelle joining the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate roster - Animal Crossing: New Leaf has re-entered the UK charts this week.
The game has sold just enough copies to squeeze its way back into the top 40, grabbing a 37th place spot in the all formats chart and 36th in the individual format variety. Our joint-favourite moustachioed plumber (because we're more than happy to show Luigi some love, too) has also kept a firm grip on some decent places, with the two biggest Mario titles on Switch making it into the top ten.
It's a tough time for Nintendo to compete at the top, though, as Marvel's Spider-Man looks set to become the biggest physical release in the country this year. Its sales have now overtaken the mighty God of War, with only multiplatform hit Far Cry 5 now standing in the way of that glory; FIFA 19 will likely have something to say about these proceedings when it arrives later this week, though.
Here's a look at this week's top ten all formats chart (physical sales only):
1. (1) Spider-Man
2. (2) Shadow of the Tomb Raider
3. (4) Crash Bandicoot: N.Sane Trilogy
4. (3) NBA 2K19
5. (5) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
6. (6) Grand Theft Auto V
7. (10) Super Mario Odyssey
8. (7) F1 2018
9. (11) PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds
10. (12) Sonic Mania Plus
Did you buy any of these chart-topping games this week? Let us know down below.

"It's a tough time" and yet 5 out of the top 10 are on Switch? Seems fine to me.
Excellent news, I'm guessing a lot of new Nintendo fans have heard the hype from us older AC players & are looking to learn the ropes of becoming a mayor ready for Crossing 2019. New Leaf is an excellent game, a great place to start.
Hands off Isabelle though, she's MY assistant.
#Peachette #Bowsette #Isabellette
Ugh....
Those boring games on number 1 & 2....
@Anti-Matter Why ? Just because you do not play such games?
Every sale chart the same thing.
They are are number 1 and 2 for a reason.
Where's Nintendo Labo: Vehicle Kit? In the recycling bin. lol It's been a complete flop.
So, what are the odds of FIFA 19 not being #1 in the UK next week?
Was nice seeing the Switch in the Target ad for FIFA 19, both Standard and Champions editions on Amazon, day 1. And no sign of PS3 or Xbox360 "Legacy Edition" on the artwork, so it's like the 1 great Switch equalized game this year, everything else seems delayed.
@BladedKnight
Hello...
I am not fan of Spiderman.
I don't even like Tomb Raider, Lara Croft.
@TheGhostWhoWalks
LABO is NOT a Failure.
For me it is even interesting than typical Mainstream Action games.
Being underdog games sometimes captivating some peoples with very Different interest, unlike Mainstream gamers.
I find Spider-Man to be an amazing game (no pun intended)! But Dragon Quest XI still remains my game of the year so far.
@Anti-Matter Sooo, if you are not a fan = boring. xD You are fun at parties, right ?
@TheGhostWhoWalks it even got outsold in Japan by the same 2 games. Really, time to stop with the cardboard.
This nonsense was going to be the next Wii Sport - now it barely does 11k in Nintendo's back yard.
@BladedKnight can't wait to play TR and finish the trilogy story. Glad to know from first hand it is good.
I went with DQXI and Torna first... But TR is high on my list.
I'm impressed by how well Sonic Mania Plus is selling, despite it being a 2 month-old physical re-release of a 1+ year-old game.
@Anti-Matter I’m actually quite interested what you think should be number 1 and 2 in the uk or actually japan
@Anti-Matter What's not to love about the new Spiderman? Swinging around a beautiful Manhattan, this game is like the opposite of boring. You're missing out my boy, sometimes I just feel bad for you...
Great to see Animal Crossing back in the charts, Fifa will be Number 1 next week.
@BladedKnight because TR has mixed reviews. I have read enough impressions that tell me to stay clear.
@Sanquine "Sooo, if you are not a fan = boring."
Isn't that the general reaction from hardcore gamers toward causal games?
To bad I finished Spider-Man and Shadow of the Tomb raider already. Great games though. I'll stick with Shenmue 1 & 2 collection until October.
New Leaf is a masterpiece. Nintendo best ever game, and my favorite game of all time. 100's of hours of content. The game never stops expanding and surprising. It's awesome.
@Anti-Matter Somebody needs Attention.. lol
@TheGhostWhoWalks @Agramonte Nintendo LABO May not be everyone’s cup of tea, but flop or not I am glad it exists and that Nintendo took the risk on it.
My son loves it and he’s learning how to code by using it. It is awesome for those who it works for.
Original GC version still my favorite, by far. Due to the harder more active tasks, the attitudes of the NPC's, and the dark humor and style.
As good as New Leaf is, it lost a lot in the general paint by numbers appeal-to-everyone-all-the-time rules.
@FlimFlam Define hardcore? For me a hardcore gamer is open to all sort of experiences. I for example love games like God of war but also Nintendo titles such as splatoon 2 , Mario oddsey (new Donk city ending is fantastic) and Zelda BOTW
@BMO_Advanced So true, the number of ways and techniques to traverse the city make just moving throught the environment enjoyable to do, not many 'open worlds' manage that. Great game.
@Kienda don't tell the trolls that, in their tiny little mind every game must cater to their (poor) tastes
@BladedKnight Yeah, what I hear. That if you are invested in the trilogy Story and the character development it is a must play.
They done a great job with her character. But I loved Raziel in his trilogy - so always knew Crystal Dynamics was going to do a good job 👍
Spider-Man is such a great game! I find myself avoiding fast travel just to swing through and see what's up, which is a positive comment on gameplay. It doesn't reinvent the wheel or anything like that (if you've never liked any Spider-Man game, you probably won't like this one), but it's just a high quality game that succeeds in what it sets out to do.
I still need to play the previous TR game, so I can't comment on the new one.
Good to see MK8 and Odyssey still going. I expect NSMBUD to have a long life as well.
Not interested in Spider Man at all after hearing from multiple people that it suffers from Ubisoft open world game design, but I'm excited for Tomb Raider and I'll buy it on Steam after I finish fully completing The Messenger and Hollow Knight.
@Ristar24
God of War will absolutely be my PlayStation game of the year, but that's largely due to it being the only one I've played this year on my fiance's PS4. It's the only PlayStation exclusive I've cared about since Bloodborne, which is my favorite From Software game. I know it won't happen, but I'd love for BB to come to Steam so I can mod it like I do my Dark Souls games.
@Sanquine I just meant the people who get mad whenever a minigame collection is announced. Poor word choice on my part.
I was trying (unsuccessfully) to point out that Anti-matter isn't the only one who seems to hate the existence of games he isn't interested in. It's annoying whenever someone does it.
@FlimFlam
He didn't say that he hates that they exist, merely that he doesn't like them and finds them boring. He's entitled to think that way.
About the topic at hand though, I expected two recently released games to be at the top. What I didn't expect was for Mario Kart to be so high on the list! 5 Switch games on that list, very impressive.
Looking forward to getting hold of Spiderman, but I'm hearing average things from people who have actually played it.
@Dalarrun Sure, he doesn't have to like them. I'm not even a fan of them myself. But I also don't think he should be upset that those games are doing well.
@FlimFlam
I think "upset" is kind of a strong term when he probably just looked at the top two games in the list and went "meh". Nothing he has said indicates outrage or anything, I'm not interested in Spider Man either but I'm not angry about it aha
@eltomo from what I hear, your best bet is just to go through the story and ignore fully completing all of the side content, which I hear is extremely repetitive. It sounds like a fun weekend rental at least.
@Dalarrun Yeah, that's possible. I think I might just be cynical from seeing so many people get upset over little things. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.
@FlimFlam
Nah, it's cool. I don't blame you thinking that way, NintendoLife and Pushsquare are sister sites and you get a lot of overlap when it comes to the two communities. We get Sony fans who come on these boards and find any way possible to be negative towards Nintendo, and in response you see Nintendo fans dismissing multi platform games as if they're the plague.
That being said, Anti Matter has been on these boards for a long time and I've got a good idea what his gaming tastes are, and he just doesn't seem to be into action heavy AAA games. I'm personally very picky on what AAA games I'll buy, as a lot of them are either uninspired Ubisoft-type games or shooters that don't really push the envelope. I tend to focus mostly on Indies/Nintendo games, and play the occasional AAA game on Steam, or borrow my fiance's PS4 for Bloodborne.
@BladedKnight
It’s weird, but I just can’t drum up any interest in SOTTR. I enjoyed the first one but got bored playing Rise and I just have zero interest in more of the same. Can’t even really explain why, but there’s just so many other games I want to play first.
@Dalarrun Yeah, I have similar gaming tastes. I don't like a lot of the stuff that's put out by AAA studios these days, but I wouldn't want to begrudge someone that does. And, on that note, it's great to see so much diversity in the charts! There's a bunch of different genres in the top 10. Everyone has something they can enjoy right now.
@FlimFlam
I agree!
I'm a little surprised that it isn't doing better (considering that it's now a dirt-cheap Selects title).
@FlimFlam that's the thing about this site. People get upset about any game that doesn't come to Nintendo and they often whine about Sony because they're in the lead right now console wise. They really don't like when other systems get exclusives either.
But if you mention a game in the Switch, it's great no matter how poorly it did. People who point this hypocrisy out are often attacked as being fanboys of some competing platform by the same people, as though being logical and rational are bad things.
You can clearly see the bias in their responses. I'm not even interested in Spiderman but I hear good things from people who like that kind of stuff and I'm not going to pretend I don't out of some warped sense of loyalty.
On the other hand, I can't wait for Animal Crossing, as it's one of the games I bought a Switch for. Some people just can't understand dynamic opinions nowadays.
I like spider-man, but I am not going to buy a ps4 just to play it. If I were interested in tomb raider, I would get it on the Xbox one x.
@Zuljaras ignore him- he has severe problems. If any game is rated above a three year old he is literally offended as though he’d been slapped across the face with a wet kipper. He’s a sad strange person.
@Dalarrun nope he will really be upset- possibly outraged.
Animal Crossing New Leaf Bro. Talk about an evergreen title if there was one! What other game from 2012 is still so popular?
@Heavyarms55 I’d say GTA V, but that’s also multi platform. In any case, New Leaf’s longetivity is impressive.
@Heavyarms55
2011's Mario Kart 7 is still selling, though I'd attribute that to the game being bundled with the 2DS.
@Dalarrun he does complain when games are rated above a certain age and often goes after people who disagree with him. People who don't want stones shouldn't live in glass houses.
@Korosanbo You should see what happened in the US last month. COD Modern Warefare 2 shot back up to become the 9th highest selling game in August, all because it was added to XBONE's backwards compatibility.
Next week's article will probably be FIFA 19 at #1.
Good to see 3DS still alive and kicking and selling games after seven years. Amazing.
@ChameleonBros Is GTA V really that old?! Wow...
@Heavyarms55 Yea, kinda. Turns out GTA V actually released in September 2013, and although AC:NL released in Japan in November 2012, in every other region it released in June 2013. So for NA region players like myself, almost the same timeframe.
@Anti-Matter all good games oofff
@Anti-Matter all good games oofff

@ChameleonBros jeez... Makes me feel old that a game I played like crazy in college is this old.
@Dalarrun nice isn’t the adjective I’d use- I’ve seen him attack many a folk for daring to disagree with him. I know there is a language barrier but he comes across as completely unreasonable. Sorry if I offended.
@Agramonte Exactly. It's trash. It had some initial curiosity at the start for the first 2 kits but it quickly wore off. It failed to reach Nintendo's expectations big-time. If it was a growing brand sales should have been up with this new kit. To say it flopped is the understatement of the century. It crashed and burned, rolled off a cliff and imploded. And 11,000 in Japan, if they don't like this quirky nonsense, no one does.
The charts on this site are terrible but if you see the top 40 for the UK, the 3rd Labo kit is nowhere, at all. Even in the Switch specific chart, it debuted at no.13 and is down to no.17 this week. I hope Nintendo get the message real soon and get back to making real games.
Nintendo have released sweet f-all that's new in 2018 but we got 3 of these cardboard cr@p kits. Seriously, WTF?
