After listening to these new ones, I would have rather had them get Tee Lopes to compose entirely new music for those zones lol. He did great with the new zone music in Sonic Mania (Studiopolis, Press Garden, and Mirage Saloon).
Tbh, I didn't even like the Sonic and Knuckles PC Collection music when first playing it many years ago, let alone now. The MIDI is awful (or at least that style/implementation of it). Although the original prototype music is better quality for the most part, the actual released music on the 1994 cartridges is vastly better than both.
Sonic Jam would definitely be my jam. I love compilations that have extra interaction, content, and personality (e.g. Kirby's Dream Collection on Wii having the extra KRTD challenges, Kirby himself as the interactive museum guide)
A side note, some of the music in in that Sonic Jam clip (Hall of Fame and around 20:10 Exploring Sonic World) sounds straight out of Mother 3 or Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire lol.
TMNT Shredder's Revenge looks so sick, can't wait to play it. Cuphead DLC looks fine, I haven't beaten the main game yet lol. Otherwise didn't have any interest in watching.
I like the colors of Koraidon a lot, but as others have said, the legendaries just feel too over-designed for my liking atm. Of the little ones, probably Lechonk.
Dang, I would have loved a Dreamcast mini as I never had it during its time, and it had an interesting library of exclusives. I might be in a minority, but I really love the mini consoles. Every method of gaming has its pros and cons, but I like that it's a "closed" system in which there's no online server, shop, or failing disc drive to worry about.
I quite enjoyed the 2019 official Genesis mini, however at this point (especially with the recently announced MD mini 2), they've really wrung Genesis games dry, there's like a dozen ways to officially play them at this point, maybe more. I am aware that there are now Sega CD games for the first time, but I meant in general. I'm not even personally interested in Master System or Saturn, but goodness knows they should give those and Dreamcast more attention.
@YoshiF2 Yes! Bomberman 64 multiplayer is awesome. It would hugely benefit from a Switch NSO EP release, as one of the valid criticisms of the N64 original (the sluggishness/slowdown when there's a lot going on-screen) would hopefully be mitigated since the Switch is obviously miles more powerful than the N64.
As someone whose username comes from Rocko's Modern Life, I'm happy that he is joining. although I think Ed Bighead or Heffer would have made a better fighter (Peaches also could have been the "Nigel Thornberry/Hugh Neutron" equivalent of the Rocko cast.) Jenny/XJ9 is a really great choice as well. Hugh Neutron is definitely surprising, and honestly highly meme-y, but I'm glad a Jimmy Neutron character is finally joining.
That said, it'll take a lot more than that to get back into the game. I didn't play it more than a couple days for a variety of reasons, but the biggest is lack of voice acting. I pin that reason on Nickelodeon more than the devs because it's not like the former is lacking capital.
Tiny text that cannot be resized is one of the most annoying parts of modern games, and I have good eyesight. I can't imagine how frustrating or borderline unplayable it can be for people with visual impairments.
Also, I wonder if Nintendo would ever consider making a special adaptive controller for Switch, like Microsoft did for Xbox a couple years back. That would be great if they did.
While games do not replace actual professional help/therapy, they can definitely be a great supplementary tool in the "treating and managing mental health conditions" toolbox.
Here are some I'd add to this list:
Wave Race 64- besides the wonderful gameplay, the presentation and music have such an earnest, feel-good vibe to them.
Pilotwings 64- specifically the Birdman mode. Free flight with no timer, no rules, just exploring flight. Pilotwings Resort's Free Flight mode is good too.
While I prefer the original version to the budget boxes and I used to pay more for a normal box, I don't really anymore. It's not a big deal. I think the SNES, N64, and original Game Boy games did the budget line best with the gold ribbon.
And ultimately, (the mere existence of Nintendo Player's Choice = permanent price reduction of popular games to $20) >>>>> a different box color
I regret getting Super Bomberman R at launch. It wasn't a terrible game (although online quality was terrible before they patched it, and at that point the lobbies were a ghost town), but it just didn't do it for me. I'm a big fan of Bomberman 64, and I really wish they'd reimagine that gameplay style for the current consoles.
Also, the Nickelodeon All-Stars fighting game and Nick Kart Racers 2. I knew what I was getting into with both games, but I still held out some hope (as a big 90s/early 00s Nick fan) that I'd enjoy the games regardless of the lack of voice acting, etc. Boy was I wrong lol.
That said, playing Star Fox 2 in 2017 felt so surreal, but really cool. The game itself is awesome imo but it hurts my eyes more than most games so I haven't played it in a couple years. Likely in the minority but I still consider it the 2nd best Star Fox game, and better than Star Fox 1.
Bowling was by far my favorite in the original. Boxing was least, but it still had its fun (and soreness-causing moments).
In Resort, I really loved archery the most. Other good ones were swordplay, basketball (especially 3 pt contest) and frisbee golf. I think I played the Wii Play table tennis a lot more than the Resort one for some reason.
According to the official Splatoon 3 section on Nintendo's website, only off-line play data is supported by cloud saves...that does not bode well for me.
On-topic, the colors are nice but the cover seems quite busy, less would be more.
There should also be an input lag comparison. NSO unfortunately has about the same input lag (offline, to clarify) as the Wii VC version. It's really noticeable when trying to get perfect power swings. In handheld mode, changing the impact point with precision is a lot tougher than it should be because of the joycon sticks.
Maybe an easy answer, but it depends on the person and series.
For example, I'd easily recommend playing all 3D Marios in chronological order, but I wouldn't do so for Mother.
People like what they like, and one likely has to have some penchant for history in order to enjoy and appreciate the beginnings of a series. For example, my first Zelda games were Ocarina of Time and Link's Awakening, but when I discovered the original NES Zelda, I adored it. I still think it's quite fun to this day and I actually prefer some aspects of it to ALTTP. But some younger relatives' first system was the Switch, and they were completely disinterested in playing anything before the Switch- even Wii U games which are obviously very close in graphics and gameplay which surprised me. I remember there was a game (one of the Wii U ports, forget which) that they were quite interested in, but as soon as I mentioned that it originated on the previous system, they lost interest. But as I said, you like what you like.
@DeathByLasagna Pretty much exactly how I feel. I actually really liked the additions of Chargin' Chuck, King Bob-omb, and Ninji, and a few of the new courses were cool. But the weird changes to the swing mechanics, ball simulation/viewer (I'm not sure what that grid is called), and projected trajectory just really disappointed me, plus no Ring Shot, mini-golf, and just the overall lack of attention to detail. Can't wait to play MG64 as well though!
@BispoSnake You could use the N64 dpad in the original game to aim, so I'd optimistically expect that to be the case here too. Although changing the impact point is much easier with analog stick, the d-pad really helped with fine tuning the general aim left and right. Unless you meant joy con drift this whole time lol.
Yes!!! I've been looking forward to this one so much, you have no idea lol. Still play it on N64, and can't wait to play it online (hopefully lag isn't bad). It's so much better than Mario Golf Super Rush and my personal favorite Mario Golf.
Also, if has one of the, if not the most underappreciated soundtrack of any Nintendo game. It's so lovely.
It's refreshing to see someone with his former status be open about his criticisms, which are valid, notably the lack of common sense features.
But he didn't have to do Ice Hockey dirty like that! Lol. IMO, it's easily one of the best "black box"-era games on the NES and dramatically better than the other sports. It has a lot of charm and you could customize your lineups, adjust the speed of the game, and the period length, plus the soundtrack is by Soyo Oka (Pilotwings, Super Mario Kart, and Wario's Woods). Blades of Steel is better, but I think both are worth playing. Speaking of, why isn't that on NSO yet?
Double Dash is a great Mario Kart game. Not tops though- probably my 3rd favorite MK game. MK8D=64, then DD, and DS.
Besides the obvious features that make Double Dash unique, something that I truly miss though is the short recovery period after getting hit. Like, if you get hit by a green/red shell in MKDD, you still have a little forward momentum as you tumble and get up quicker. You don't feel as "frozen" as in modern Mario Kart games. Also had some excellent courses, great battle, and the All-Cup tour was pretty cool. Also, inexplicably, the last console Mario Kart to have the option of untimed survival balloon battle. How in the flying F did Nintendo still not include that option back, THREE MK's/console gens later???
Ninja Hideaway is not only the best course of Wave 1, it's one of the best and most creative courses in the game and in the series. As others said, I wished they incorporated Ninji's into the level.
Sky Garden is really solid too, Choco Mountain is miles easier compared to N64 but still decent. I'm not a fan of the changes to Coconut Mall, specifically the escalators and the parking lot section, the middle is still ok. Personally, I'm not a fan of the crazy width they added to some courses, and in general "dumbing down" the difficulty of retro courses compared to their original incarnations.
Metroid Dread is definitely the top for me this year, what an awesome game. I did also enjoy New Pokemon Snap. As a huge fan of the N64 Mario Golf though, Super Rush was unfortunately disappointing. Content wise, it's definitely in a better position than at launch, but it sucks that they already stopped DLC this short. I just dislike the newer mechanics and the omnipresent lack of attention to detail.
By itself, those would be good additions, especially how the starter villager houses kinda stink.
Looking at the bigger picture though, one of ACNH's biggest problems for me is in the design itself- its hyper focus on customization and decorating at the expense of more depth, interactions, and characters with the villagers themselves. Don't get me wrong, terraforming is cool and placing household objects outside was very welcome among many other good additions. It just feels like the balance between customization/decorating and "living+villager interactions" is completely jammed up to the wall on the former.
I loved this game, but I haven't played regularly in so long and I know so many have burnt out. For some people including myself, user-created content cannot single-handedly carry a game especially this one.
Pokemon Gold/Silver's Psybeam instantly comes to mind, the PSI move shield A/Sigma in Earthbound, and the sound the Mirror Shield makes when reflecting Koume/Kotake's beam attacks in Ocarina of Time. I really love this topic, great sound effects add so much personality especially to older games. Here are some other favorites off the top of my head:
NES:
-The scratch of Blades of Steel's title screen -Blocking a kick in Tecmo Super Bowl -The Magic Wand in original Legend of Zelda
GB/GBC/GBA: -Clearing a tetris in the original Tetris
SNES: -The ghost ropes and Klobber Barrels in DKC2 -Using the stomping kicks move with the Suplex ability in Kirby Super Star
N64: -Metal Mario's footsteps in Mario 64 and Smash 64 -The sound of attacking 3 enemies together with Samus' screw attack in Smash 64 -Slamming into the ground with J-Bomb and rolling with Thunderfist in Blast Corps -Collecting a Gold feather, and Gator Banjo chomping in Banjo-Kazooie -Zora Link's footsteps in Majora's Mask
@RupeeClock In Smash presentations, any Mii from an M-rated series for the most part was only referred to by their character name in North America, but by their series name in Japan (and other regions I'm guessing). Altair, Vault Boy, Dragonborn, Dante in the US presentation; Assassin's Creed, Fallout, Skyrim, Devil May Cry in the Japan presentation.
NA gets my vote here, I like that action shot the best. I'm not a fan of the thick borders on Europe's N64 box art. The JP one is good but would be better without the '99 New Boards bullet points"
I love this game. It definitely has a learning curve, but it's incredibly satisfying once you learn how to land well. I still like 1080 Avalanche on GCN too, but it feels a bit "off" compared to this one. I feel the same with the Wave Races too. I adore Wave Race 64, and still like Wave Race Blue Storm, but WR: BS just feels a bit "off" compared to 64.
That part where he says UGC contributes to ".....strengthening the engagement over time with Animal Crossing" is laughable honestly. Pretty much every friend/player I know mostly stopped playing months ago/got burnt out. While UGC is an important component to AC, it can not be the sole pillar propping up AC and right now I feel they put waaaay too much focus on that (even then it's missing many QoL features).
The game needs more "meaty" content:
-Better, more varied dialogue is the elephant in the room. Give the villagers more personality and make them more dynamic.
-Make villager tasks way more frequent and more interesting.
-More interactivity with objects
-Brewster and other shops/Nook upgrades
-Some type of minigames (e.g. like Kappn's in previous entries), even if simple
The art, sea creatures, swimming additions were a good start, more updates like that please and less emphasis on simply adding holiday furniture items.
Look, I get it. Nintendo has been unreasonably draconian and out of touch with some stuff like this in the past, no matter how well-intentioned the creators of the mods/software often were. It's also true that Ultimate's online (as much as I love the game offline) is just trash, in both average connection quality and overall infrastructure. Combine that with the pandemic prohibiting in person Ultimate tournaments, what happened this summer in the competitive Smash Ultimate scene, Slippi invigorating the Melee fanbase, and you have a lot more people getting into Melee, whether playing or watching.
But looking at this pragmatically.....
How on earth did the Big House organizers (knowing Nintendo's recent history with fan mods) think that running online Melee mods would somehow be cool with Nintendo in a tournament sponsored by Nintendo. Like what was the thought process here lmao
The Switch is in its 4th calendar year, and there is still no Madden or NHL game on the Switch. Man, EA never fails to disappoint. League exclusivity rights/monopolies are hot garbage.
@DK-Fan I think it's moreso that people hoped Super Mario Party would have DLC considering the lack of boards/overall content in the game compared to previous entries. Previous Mario Party games did not receive DLC, but neither did previous other franchises until their Switch iterations. Also, almost every new (non-remake/port) Nintendo game received some amount of free and/or paid DLC, so it's reasonable to expect some DLC for the game and the lack of it is more glaring.
Received DLC:
Zelda BOTW, Snipperclips, ARMS, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, Kirby Star Allies, Smash Ultimate, Mario Tennis Aces, Mario Maker 2, Mario Rabbids, Ring Fit Adventure, Fire Emblem 3H, Daemon Ex Machina, Luigi's Mansion 3, Pokemon Sw/Sh, Animal Crossing NH
No DLC:
Super Mario Party, 1-2 Switch, Yoshi's Crafted World, Astral Chain, Clubhouse Games (SMP devs)
If this is all that NDCube has worked on since Fall 2018/Early 2019, then that's just sad, considering how barebones Clubhouse Games Switch is both on its own as a 2020 Switch game and compared to its predecessor, not to mention the inexplicable multiplayer restrictions on some games.
I don't regret purchasing the game on the whole, I've had some fun with it, but it feels so rushed that I figured they churned it out really quick to fill in the 2020 release gaps.
I'll still be getting this for some of the new games added and some of the classics like chess, backgammon etc. Honestly though, as a big fan of the DS original, this seems disappointing for a 2020 sequel to a 2006 DS game. I expected way more functionality (multiplayer, communication) and depth (more modes, unlockables, settings etc.). I mean, only the same 9 holes for Golf and 2 player restrictions for bowling/darts, among other things? No record-keeping of wins/losses and opponents, no way to communicate at all online? Come on.
Edit: I just realized that NDCube developed, or at least helped develop this game. For those that don't know, they're the ones behind Super Mario Party. That explains a ton regarding lack of content/options lol.
I think the custom designs is neat, but overall the AC app is such wasted potential. Imagine how much greater it would be if it took some cues from the Splatoon 2 app and included:
1.) Your island's turnip prices of the day.
2.) Your island's daily Nook Shopping/Nook's Cranny items.
2.) Your island's visiting merchants of the day.
For anyone who's trying to collect Redd's artwork, you know how incredibly tedious it is just searching for him, with his appearing only every two weeks on average. I get AC's supposed to be a slow burn, "little bit every day" game, but Redd's visits are ludicrously infrequent, not to mention that whole fake art mechanic. I calculated it- to collect all pieces of the museum art, you would literally have to play, every single day, for 1.5-2 YEARS (!), and that's assuming you pick the authentic art work each time. If visiting merchants were indicated in the real-world phone app, it would make the whole process exponentially less tedious.
For overall function, the NSO app still stinks though. Just give me a console-native voice chat/party system and controllers with headphone jacks like PS4 does. I love the Switch, but it's online is so frustratingly backwards and subpar.
@Ventilator If I'm not mistaken, all the limited time themes including Game Boy Tetris are available to unlock in the base game now, but it costs twice as many in game tickets (30) to unlock than normal themes (15).
Ah, I've been waiting for the Majora's Mask box art brawl. Not only do I think the Japan one is the best of the bunch, it is also one of my all time favorite box arts of any game. I also love the bonus Japan one too.
On topic, I feel like 2020 was gonna be lighter already (at least on Nintendo's end) pre-covid, but the pandemic obviously affected everything, game wise. That said, I think they'll still have new game announcements sprinkled throughout the season/year, it just probably won't be in a centralized, hyped event like a direct. For example, the Mario Maker 2 major DLC update came out of nowhere, and the Luigi's Mansion DLC wave 2 that released yesterday came out 1-2 months ahead of time if I recall correctly.

Both are great honestly, but I vote for Europe solely because of Dry Bones and Boo.

I think Wave 2 of MK8D Booster Pass and Game Boy for NSO/EP are the most likely announcements.
Whatever the case, one thing is for sure in the next Direct:
At least a few full minutes of redundant information that is dedicated to games already released lol.

Re: Soapbox: Let's Get Happy Home Designer Into Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Re: Talking Point: What's The Best Sound In Video Games?
Pokemon Gold/Silver's Psybeam instantly comes to mind, the PSI move shield A/Sigma in Earthbound, and the sound the Mirror Shield makes when reflecting Koume/Kotake's beam attacks in Ocarina of Time. I really love this topic, great sound effects add so much personality especially to older games. Here are some other favorites off the top of my head:
NES:
-The scratch of Blades of Steel's title screen
-Blocking a kick in Tecmo Super Bowl
-The Magic Wand in original Legend of Zelda
GB/GBC/GBA:
-Clearing a tetris in the original Tetris
SNES:
-The ghost ropes and Klobber Barrels in DKC2
-Using the stomping kicks move with the Suplex ability in Kirby Super Star
N64:
-Metal Mario's footsteps in Mario 64 and Smash 64
-The sound of attacking 3 enemies together with Samus' screw attack in Smash 64
-Slamming into the ground with J-Bomb and rolling with Thunderfist in Blast Corps
-Collecting a Gold feather, and Gator Banjo chomping in Banjo-Kazooie
-Zora Link's footsteps in Majora's Mask
GCN:
Re: Dante, Shantae And More Join Super Smash Bros. Ultimate As Mii Fighter Costumes
Re: Feature: What’s The Sexiest Nintendo Console Ever?
Gold N64 is a glaring omission from this list.
From the list though, I'd probably choose Wii for consoles and platinum GBA SP for handhelds.
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #73 - 1080° Snowboarding
NA gets my vote here, I like that action shot the best. I'm not a fan of the thick borders on Europe's N64 box art. The JP one is good but would be better without the '99 New Boards bullet points"
I love this game. It definitely has a learning curve, but it's incredibly satisfying once you learn how to land well. I still like 1080 Avalanche on GCN too, but it feels a bit "off" compared to this one. I feel the same with the Wave Races too. I adore Wave Race 64, and still like Wave Race Blue Storm, but WR: BS just feels a bit "off" compared to 64.
Re: Nintendo's Doug Bowser Discusses The Future Of Animal Crossing: New Horizons
Re: Smash Comp The Big House Cancelled After Cease And Desist From Nintendo
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: Duel #53 - Tetris
NA/Europe for me. Classic, colorful and shows the gameplay well. Many here dislike the tagline, but I personally don't mind it.
Re: Super Smash Bros. Ultimate Version 8.0.0 Is Now Live, Here Are The Full Patch Notes
Kirby, Mewtwo, Incineroar, K. Rool, Plant all getting buffs? Awesome.
Re: Random: Min Min Gets Added To The Smash Bros. Ultimate Mural - Can You Find Her?
I would absolutely love to get a poster/banner of this when the roster is finally complete.
Re: Here Are The Seven Games EA Is Bringing To Nintendo Switch This Year
The Switch is in its 4th calendar year, and there is still no Madden or NHL game on the Switch. Man, EA never fails to disappoint. League exclusivity rights/monopolies are hot garbage.
Re: Random: Is This Why We Never Got DLC For Super Mario Party On Switch?
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #46 - Sonic The Hedgehog 3
Going with NA on this one. The Japan has that 90s vibe, but I like the Angel Island backdrop on the NA one.
Re: Random: Is This Why We Never Got DLC For Super Mario Party On Switch?
If this is all that NDCube has worked on since Fall 2018/Early 2019, then that's just sad, considering how barebones Clubhouse Games Switch is both on its own as a 2020 Switch game and compared to its predecessor, not to mention the inexplicable multiplayer restrictions on some games.
I don't regret purchasing the game on the whole, I've had some fun with it, but it feels so rushed that I figured they churned it out really quick to fill in the 2020 release gaps.
Re: Review: Clubhouse Games: 51 Worldwide Classics - You Won't Get 'Board' Of These Games Easily
Re: Talking Point: Has Animal Crossing Finally Made The Nintendo Switch Online App Worthwhile?
Re: Unlock A Special Animal Crossing: New Horizons Theme In Tetris 99's Next Maximus Cup
@Ventilator If I'm not mistaken, all the limited time themes including Game Boy Tetris are available to unlock in the base game now, but it costs twice as many in game tickets (30) to unlock than normal themes (15).
Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl #40 - The Legend Of Zelda: Majora's Mask
Ah, I've been waiting for the Majora's Mask box art brawl. Not only do I think the Japan one is the best of the bunch, it is also one of my all time favorite box arts of any game. I also love the bonus Japan one too.
Re: We Won't Get A Nintendo Direct This June For E3, Says Report
2020: Year of the Backlog.
