Re: Soapbox: Cassette Beasts Is The Monster-Catching RPG For A Disillusioned Pokémon Fan

CanardDeFeu

I've not played this one, but I have very much enjoyed my time with Monster Sanctuary.

I have a love/hate relationship with Pokemon. I played Gen 1 and 2, then fell off for years. I missed gens 3-6, and tried jumping back in with 7. While I liked the Pokemon themselves (well, enough of them anyway), I never got past the second island because I got over the game beating me to death with cut scenes every 10 paces and a story I didn't give a damn about.

And I ended up missing out on the last two because of various reasons. I've watched streams and playthroughs and neither entirely jumped out at me (the glaring technical issues of S/V notwithstanding).

I think I want Pokemon to take more risks. PLA was a nice change of pace, and despite the technical issues (seriously Gamefreak, get it together) it was a fun mixing up of the formula.

I want a Pokemon life sim. Let me be a trainer, or a breeder, or just a farmer who catches Pokemon to help me around the farm or escort me into the wilds to fend of wild Pokemon while I gather resources. If any franchise can afford to take risks it's Pokemon. Hell, how many Mystery Dungeons did we get?

I'm glad we're seeing lots of great indie games that let us scratch the itch of monster fighting and capturing without having to shell out $60 for $20 worth of product and will never go on sale.

Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

CanardDeFeu

It's gonna have to have backwards compatibility if they want me to buy it.

Trying to sell me a new console, and then going "by the way, you'll need to rebuy all your games!" is just a kick in the nards. And the whole "Just keep playing your old Switch" argument is weak. If that's the case, then why buy the new one at all? My Switch runs the games I play just fine, and if I want to play something that needs more processing power I'm just gonna use my computer.

In this day and age releasing a new console without BC is basically holding a sign up that says "we don't respect you in any capacity." There's no good reason to not include it (and porting over digital collections) than pure greed and anti-consumerist nonsense.

Re: Free-To-Play Battle Royale 'My Hero Ultra Rumble' Out Now On Switch

CanardDeFeu

Not a huge battle royale fan, and I've never watched or read MHA. But this does look kinda fun, even to a salty old man like me who mostly despises online multi-player.

I just hope the characters don't constantly spout off catch phrases like they did in this video. That would need to be turned off really quick, or play on mute.

Re: Rumour: 'Switch 2' Gamescom Demo Supposedly Had Zelda: BOTW Running At 4K 60FPS

CanardDeFeu

If it has BC then it's a maybe from me, if the new specs actually matter. I don't give a toss about 4k, my TV isn't 4k so that means literally nothing to me in terms to value.

More processing power? Great. Able to run at higher FPS? Sure, that'd be nice too. Upping native to 1080p? I'd be happy with that.

But if I need to rebuy even my miniscule library then I'm out. Besides, for the types of games I'm playing the current Switch seems to work just fine.

Re: Saints Row & Red Faction Developer Volition Shuts Down After 30 Years

CanardDeFeu

Considering Volition's reaction to the fans when the Saints Row reboot flopped, it's sort of hard to feel sorry for them. I know it wasn't the entire company being idiots, but still.

The people with skill will hopefully find new work, and the people who were dicks to the fanbase will hopefully not.

Also, this is why mergers are bad. This is why companies like EA and Embracer need to be prevented from just gobbling up anyone smaller than they are because all they do is go "you didn't make the CEO another literal boatload of money this quarter? Out you go!"
