Nintendo has confirmed that version 1.1.6 of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS will launch soon.
The patch - which will require 61 MB of space on the Wii U and 325 MB on 3DS - will balance the characters in the game.
Once the patch is applied, existing replays will no longer be viewable, so be sure to backup any special ones you're particularly attached to before it arrives. Once the patch is available, it will be required to play the game online.
What changes do you hope to see in this update? Are there any fighters you hope will be adjusted? Let us know by posting a comment.

Deactivating replays through updates still? Is it still 2014?
It would be surprising if Bayonetta doesn't get nerfed heavily.
They're coming for Bayonetta with those nerfs. Also, for anyone wondering why the replays get trashed with a new update, the replays aren't saving the video of the match just the button presses and some other metadata. So if knockback, fall speed, and values like that are changed, the replay won't come out correctly and it could bug out pretty good.
Why is the 3DS patch so much larger? Is it plausible to hope that they would finally add an intro cinematic to that version, too?
Second update since they 'stopped' updating the game. I wonder if they are getting ready to link it for cross play between systems?
Hopefully they nerf Bayonetta.
Hopefully they patch out Baidou
@Tuulenpoika Could be a Wii U stage being brought to 3DS.
Or simply how the 3DS stores data, so instead of just adding patch data is is effectively redownloading characters and other DLC.
Don't get your hopes up on stages or cinematics or other new features, @PeopleAbove. ^^ The size makes it very unlikely it's anything more than balancing.
Bayonetta needs a lot, but she won't get enough because these tweaks have always come in small increments. Corrin will get nerfed a little, too, as will probably Cloud and Shiek.
I personally hope to see Donkey Kong and Charizard get some major buffs, though, but do find that very, very unlikely.
I'm all for it. Make the game fresh again and a reason to start playing again.
Buff low tiers like shiiiieeet. And remove Bayo's 0-death's. If a high tier Meta Knight can't have it, not even top tiers should.
Another freaking update? I had never played a Smash game before and went out on a limb to buy this one. Worst decision ever. I hardly ever play it and its taking up more and more space on my system everyday like a virus. I'll probably just bite the bullet with the money I spent on it and delete the whole thing forever.
And I thought they were done with balancing updates.
Ganon buffs please. Give his grab more range.
@Gauchorino Smash replays aren't videos, they are CPUs recreating the match you saved a replay of. If they didn't delete everyone's replays after a balance patch, there's a good chance the inputs in the replays would mess up. So that's why they have to delete them every time they do a balance patch.
@Zach777 Smash Wii U and 3DS have completely different stages, so that would probably be impossible. Even the stages shared between both versions have some differences between them.
@Mechageo To do that, they would probably have to remove some button configurations from the controls menu. But why would they do that for a playstyle that's really hard to use and no one is using? There's no point in patching it out.
@Grumblevolcano I can see that happening as she has been called "cheap" by many gamers.
I think Capcom should do some balance on SFV, too.
Can we just stop? I'm going to lose replays again I didn't have time to upload of my wife and I playing some matches that were quite funny. No use in being able to save replays if every darn update breaks it. I guess the super competitive crowd must have complained about something.
@TruthBeTold They wouldn't glitch out if Nintendo thought about that in advance and made changelog "backups" so the game can remember changes between versions and re-applies those differences back to original versions during replays.
@CapeSmash The CPU would still be able to recreate matches if Nintendo made plans in advance to save versions changelogs inside the game and make it downgrade back to these versions when those specific versions are replayed. This isn't a limitation, it's just bad, rushed design.
@CapeSmash Granted, but it's extremely irritating and unfortunate that no workaround for preserving replays from these updates has been implemented. This unquestionably bothers everyone who has intentionally saved replays, which is likely an enormous percentage of the people who play these games. They should either find a way to update data without eliminating saved user content or begin to design such features in ways which do not allow user content to ever be rendered inaccessible. This is inexcusable.
Bayonetta gon get nerfed
@Drezus Maybe, but we are about 2 years too late for that at this point.
I haven't been able to play online on my 3ds for a long time. It says communication error. Does anyone else have this problem? Hopefully this update fixes that.
@FierceRagnar
"and most importantly: add a stage hazard switch. Let's go!"
Amen. This would make Dr. Wily's Castle and the stage with Ridley in it actually usable in a serious match.
it's probably 325 blocks, or 40 MB on 3DS.
@manu0 Good point.
@burninmylight I prefer serious matches with them on, honestly.
Most would argue that makes it less competitive, but in my eyes, a really good Smash player, is someone that can use the stage, including its hazards, to their advantage.
Ridley and Yellow Devil are FAR from unpredictable, and a player that can use them in their plan of attack or defense is showing knowledge of the battlefield and proper use of resources.
Stage hazard switch, make it happen.
Also, I just joked to my friend after a good match that he's going to lose the replay of it when the next update arrives.
325 MBs? Ouch. OUCH! My 3DS MicroSD is kind of running out of space. I guess the maximum capacity is 32 GBs, isn't it?
What's the point of saving replays if they automatically get deleted every time there's an update (which is often)? :/
@owendershot Haha, seriously though. I was actually one of those that got the special demo code. Got that, played it, thiught it was fairly fun, then downloaded the full game to play with my cousin thinking it was an entirely complete package already. But yeah if I knew it was going to grow this big I never would have invested. Haha. My fatal mistake was buying the digital copy.
@AlexSora89 It might be a mistake, as @manu0 pointed out "it's probably 325 blocks".
Truth Be Told 😉
Nintendo keeps updating - People gets angry.
Nintendo doesn't update - People gets angry anyway.
It's a lose-lose for them.
It's annoying to keep losing replays, but once I save new replays, I seldom go way back to look at old ones. Live in the present people, make new memories, lol
mabye they wil berf nayoneta,..
Yes. I'm pretty sure they'll nerf Bayo further, but other than that I don't know. I wouldn't mind Cloud, Rosalina and Ryu getting a few nerfs and Ganondorf, Zelda, Samus, Jigglypuff, Pac-Man and some others getting buffs.
Hoping for some Wario, DDD, and Mewtwo buffs. And a Cloud and Bayo nerf.
#BuffThePuff
@invictus4000 Yeah, why couldn't they just leave Diddy Kong stupidly overpowered and not updated the game at all? >
I really just want an item frequency switch on 3DS. "On" just spawns way too many items it's ridiculous, why on earth can't I set it to low like on Wii U? I like items, just not when it's constantly raining them and you basically end up using items more than your attacks!
I also wish they would fix Smash Run multiplayer so that it would be actually multiplayer, instead of putting the players in seperate worlds where they can't interact. Seriously, that's probably the main thing that holds it back from being even close to as fun as City Trial.
Of course, I don't think these things will happen, but a guy can dream can't he?
@Drezus
Seriously, I really don't see how it could be that difficult for them to store the old values of the variables and then when you load a replay, it loads the values associated with the version number that replay was made with. The only potential problem I see would be exploits that let you get back into the game with those values, but again, it would be pretty trivial to add multiple points where it checks that your variables are current, especially while connecting to online play. I don't know how Smash in particular was programmed, but it really doesn't seem like it should be a problem for them.
Heres for everyone who said they would never nerf bayonetta
RIP Bayonetta, Rosalina.
Also, #BuffThePuff!
Well they said they were done, but patches are still needed for releasing new charcters at first, now it's just for whatever, I would just love to see more options for the 3DS version, including stamina matches.
I still wish for Wolf, have 4 vets and 4 newcomers, but that's just mii.
@Spooj mewtwo buffs? why/ he has had 3 major buffs and is now top 15 at least, maybe top 10.
I'd like bayos side b in the air have a little more lag if it doesn't connect. apart from that there are a load of low tiers who could do with buffs and its likely to be a raffle who gets some, im personally holding out for a duck hunt duo buff.
Stop destroying my replays!
This opinion doesn't seem as popular as it once was for some reason but I play daily, competitively, won a few tourneys in my day, so I don't think I'm in a position of complete ignorance when I pray for Bowser to get nerfed. He's too fast - his run, his side B, his landing punishment. His grab has too much reach because of his size and speed. His down B breaks your shield EVERY TIME, which makes sense if you're applying the laws of physics I suppose but no character should be able to do that with such ease. I don't like that he doesn't flinch at low damage, making every move punishable especially from smaller floaty characters. I could go on, I've learned to do fine enough against him but that was with wayyy too many hours of practice against people that I can guarantee haven't put 1/5th the effort into training as I have.
Rant over. For now. Bleh.
BAYONETTA NERF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!'gnejgruggssusjksb. K@wkuzj$zyehzhvv$!v(ySy

@AlexSora89 With fat32 formatting, any SD card can work in a 3DS. 64, 128, etc.
Can we have a Kirby buff please?
Releasing a patch and not touching Bayonetta would be the best troll move ever. Actually, scratch that - second best. Number one would be increasing the knockback of her smash attacks or their shieldstun.
Anyway, that change is kind of a given, especially considering Japan was already making major moves to ban her from the competitive scene. Other than that I'm hoping that Link will be buffed at least a bit and that Cloud won't be nerf'd too hard.
@Wonky_Kong Sorry, didn't know he got that many buffs. I guess Samus needs a buff then. At least fix the hit boxes on some of her aerials.
I kinda didn't want a patch for 2 reasons: 1. I don't want Pikachu to get nerfed and 2. I think that it's ridiculous that people are/were constantly complaining about how they want Bayonetta nerfed (and Sheik and Diddy when they were dominant) instead of just learning the matchup since now there's literally hundreds of videos showing people how to beat her various tricks. You know what people did with Fox's annoying stuff in Melee? Instead of begging for a patch (and there technically was a "patched" version of Melee in the form of the PAL version which is in fact more balanced) they learned what they could do in terms of beating him.
Buff Palutena
Robin speed buffs would really be nice, Sm4sh Balance Team.
Also, #BuffThePuff.
Please buff mr. Game and watch's roll his weight a bit increased and his end lag reduced fall speed a little faster
@VanillaLake
Boy I hope so! So much memory for a mere balancing update (and not a "here comes a new challenger" update, sigh)...
@Knuckles
I'm interested. Tell me more, master.
Nerf Bayonetta and Ryu.
Buff Ganondorf, Shulk, Little Mac, Dedede...and Jiggs.
Never fails. Every time I try to give Smash 4 another chance, it gets an update and deletes all my replays, AGAIN! Which makes me irritated, and then I remember all of the other things in Smash 4 that gets under my skin. It feels like Smash 4 just doesn't like me.
The only ones I really think they need to nerf are Cloud, Bayonetta and Corrin. Other characters may need a nerf or two as well, but those three are, IMO, the worst offenders.
Meanwhile, I think Zelda is due for the biggest buff yet. Poor girl has been near the bottom of the tier lists in every game thus far. Not that I really care that much about tier lists, but, y'know.
WHY so MUCH space?! Theyre not adding a new character theyre literally just editing numbers, that shouldn't take up no more than 10 MB at the very least, are they updating the models or visual effects or something?
They better not nerf bayonetta till the point where she's unplayable. she hasn't even won a major tournament, unlike the countless times shiek and zss has.
Mario has been ignored in every update. Plz buff him!
@Dr_Corndog
Shulk needs serious flaws corrected. Not a major buff, but fixes to his Smash attacks and Uair and Dair. And autocancels.
#buffthepuff
I would kind of like to see what happens in old replays given the tweaked hitboxes and such.
/results screen showing a Kirby victory after he clearly did not win
I wish Bayonetta wasn't so good. She was my main before she was even released, and I guess I was lucky that she turned out to be OP. Now though, I think Sakurai is gonna nerf her into the ground, so she isn't even decent
"Wah, wah, Bayonetta players keep beating me. Nerf her!" - Every 'Professional' Smash Player
I don't play Smash that much (particularly due to the fact that I don't have much free times) but anything to make the game feel balance is a good thing imo.
This is going to be interesting. Just the other night, my friends and I pondered about Bayonetta and Corrin getting nerfed.
They're gonna nerf Bayonetta and that makes me sad. She's the reason I bought the stupid game (both versions might I add) I can only hope it's not too jarring of a nerf. Sigh...
@Gauchorino Dude, replays are just computers using thsle same inputs as you and your opponents dig. If replays were left, they would desync and not work
@Gen0neD They probably won't nerf her. If your going by internet mode, it's probably Cloud. There's only a handful of good FG Bayo's, but thousands of Clouds.
@BannaBallPro lol how long have you had this game.
@Tigerfan810 Replays work by using having computers play with your inputs. I Nintendo left them in, they'd just desync and not work.
@Giygas_95 DO YOUEVEN KNOW HOW THEY WORK
@Ime058 Yes I do. They're recording inputs, not saving video, and as such changing character data would mess the replays up. Why are you assuming I don't know how they work and using all caps? I just want them to stop issuing these updates so I stop losing my replays. Or have the game load up old data when replays using previous software versions are played.
And you do realize you can put all your replies in one post right?
Make Samus not completely useless, that would be nice.
@invictus4000 this is why i buy everything physical copy first, then if I really want a perm copy i digital download and give away or sell physical.
@Uberchu Yeeeeaaahhhh....you're the smart one. Haha.
@smashbrolink
I don't disagree with any of that. But when I'm playing with friends and/or my girlfriend, we don't want to stick to just the same half-dozen stages that don't have any or light hazards, but we don't want to deal with those hazards that make themselves the center of attention, like YD and Ridley. Everyone has their own preferences, and a game that has been big on customization like Smash should accommodate everyone.
....and maybe palutena and King dedede
Cool to see that the team is still together working on the 3DS and Wii U versions, making them as tight and balanced as possible (possibly prepping for the NX version?). I just remember that Sakurai said he can't keep the team together forever, so it's great to see that work is still being done. I mean, it kind of stinks that my replays won't work, but I'll accept that if it means a better playing experience.
OK, can someone confirm something for me:
"Once the patch is available, it will be required to play the game online"
What are they saying? It will be required to have the patch to play online OR it will be required to be connected to the net to play the game?
Please please please tell me it's the first one!
@AlexSora89 There is nothing else to really tell. You first need to make sure your computer can fat32 format the SD card, which is done by inserting the card into the computer and right clicking on it. Then you format it, copy (or cut, your choice) the content from your other SD card to the newly fat32 formatted SD card.
@RantingThespian Its the first one. It has always meant the first one.
@Ime058 Yes, I know that's how it works. But that's not the point. Replays being unwatchable are as good as deleted, and EVERY time an update comes around we all have to go through this again. When we really shouldn't when there are games like MK8 (in my experience) never having this problem.
@Knuckles
Will try. Arigatou, Angel Island guardian.
Please fix Pac-Man's laggy grab (he's my man!); you could at least make it so that the fringe of the grab beam actually catches enemies.
@Tigerfan810 Mario Kart probably isn't the best comparison since there isn't any tweeks to the core gameplay or character/vehicle attributes after launch
@invictus4000 Ditto! Haven't touched it in months. I'll probably trade it soon.
@Tigerfan810 Finally someone else feels my pain, though I don't really save replays anymore.
I would like to see Link buffed up on all his moves
How many updates does it take to make a game slightly better? I swear there were more than 10 updates for the 3DS version before now.
I personally got sick of the 3DS version, and the Wii U version I barely play anymore. Smash has become too crazy compared to where it began.
You know what will make Nintendo to have a win-win with these constant Smash updates?
If Nintendo had the option to have people choose which option they can play on, people won't get angry because it won't take up a lot of space and will save up time for them. Therefore, it will definitely be a win-win.
@Mechageo why would you want to get rid if bidou? there's a lot of possibilities with it.
@TheRedCap30 Again, granted. Either something should be implemented to work around this design or the replay feature should not be designed in such a way that makes it so volatile in the first place. One fix for the future could be to actually record them as videos. Any improvement of the type would be very welcome, though, as random permanent inaccessibility of offline user content is beyond unacceptable.
BEEP BEEP HERE COMES THE NERF TRAIN
@TruthBeTold Yes but, couldn't they host the old metadata on server just for the purposes of someone wanting to watch their old replays? Why is it such a problem, there is no need to discard the old metadata entirely from existence forever. It doesn't need to stay on console, it could be hosted on the on-demand server location.
@IceClimbers The Puff is Buff Enough.XD
Give some love to Link; he's had a really rough time with faster characters thanks to all the frames in the wind-up and tail-end of his projectiles.
#BuffthePuff
I would love to see a greninja buff or a ganon buff
61 MB of Bayonetta nerfs
I'm very glad that you are taking the time to ask us what we would like to see in updates. Thank you.
Something I would like to see in the next update is some hit box adjustment on a lot of the fighters so they match the animations better - specifically the animations that have those trailing arcs (mario's up tilt/up attack, Fox's forward aerial, ganondorf's up aerial, etc). Some fighters' hit boxes on moves featuring those arcs don't actually cover the entire arc. For example, the arcs on fox's forward air are in front of him and behind him, but the hit boxes are only in front (sometimes it seems like there are hit boxes near the arcs that are "hit-boxless," but they don't go out as far as the arcs do). In my opinion, if there is an arc on certain frames of a move's animation, there should be hit boxes in those places too.
I'd also like to see an increase Palutena's wind boxes and for her default side special to maintain its wall properties until it disappears (as in nothing can go through it the entire time). When it comes to the wind boxes, they do push opponents back a bit, but Palutena is never done with the move's animation before the opponent is able to get a hit in. Due to this, those wind boxes don't serve that much of a purpose other than aiding the knockback from the hit boxes of the wings.
@TheRedCap30 Yeah. Hopefully they'll find a good way to correct this with future games, though.
Hoping for some speed buffs on some of the slower chars (Robin, Corrin, Bowser, etc.)
I would like Link to be stronger and faster as well as well as Luigi but for both of them balanced and stronger please!
